Why can't I wear this record out? Has anyone else had the experience of putting this record on every day for the past six months thinking you might tire of it but you never do? It is like a fix. Judy and the Dream of Horses is the only song that has worn out slightly for me. I am thrilled with the prospect of a long and prosperous career for these guys. Has anyone heard a record they like more this year? The only other record that even comes close for me is Spiritualized's beautfully haunting LADIES AND GENTLEMEN WE ARE FLOATING IN SPACE and Moloko's DO YOU LIKE MY TIGHT SWEATER. As far as gender issues, I think Seeing Other People is the best example of this. The song is really ambiguous. When Stuart Murdoch sings, "you'd be better of going with girls at least they know what they're doing" he could be talking to a woman or a man. There's a hand over his mouth because he has to keep the relationship secret.... Still it is kept very ambiguous. One of the newer songs had some ambiguities in it. I think that these songs are the product of a more open minded generation and also probably result in more Smiths comparisons. Morrisey liked to leave things vague as well. Sinister: Sessions at West 54th Street

Hello. Me and Rachel were at that taping too, we waited in line from about 215 until 4ish before we went in, we were quite near the front... they seemed to cock up quite a few times but it was still cool.. Stuart Murdoch at one point said "anyone here from Britain", I kind of shouted out "I am" to which he looked at me, looked away and said "It's great innit" and carried on with the set.. Rachel and I were surprised though when the drummer who was taking pics of the band turned and took a pic of us..though maybe it wasn't of us.. The set was far too short though it gave us a chance to hear some of the new songs again just in time for the Angel Orensanz Sunday gig where they seemed 'like old friends' we HAD met. Favourite new song is the Loneliness of the Middle Distance Runner...good stuff. I even like Lazy Jane now, that's cos I've seen it twice in a row without Monica singing...I prefer the Stuart solo version... The actual programme appears to be on Sat nights at 10 ish on WNET which is channel 13 on their cable thing, I watched the Daniel Lanois one that Saturday.. Comfort was called Simon something or other I think and In The Groove Again was excellent...a good buy for 99p anyway! My god, you Brits must be really spoiled with good music, cos I would certainly lose control of my bladder functions if I were to *ever* hear Teenage Fanclub, or the Boos, heck, even Ned's Atomic Dustbin on American radio. Never mind ever hearing B&S. Yes, it is *that* bad. Well, I guess that is why they invented cassettes. I agree that XFM does play some rubbish at times, but it's still better than anything else on offer at the moment. It's good to find people who don't think "alternative" means playing Oasis and Ocean Duller Scene five times every hour. Mind you, I don't remember hearing a single B&S track yet. Don't think much of the breakfast show guy though, I think I'll stick to Radcliffe/Greening on Radio 1. Unfortunately I'm leaving London in ten days time ready to go back to uni, so it's back to listening to CDs I guess. Stuart P.S. Sinister: re: PBS taping

I had the recent fortune of being able to attend the perhaps now fabled Sessions on 54th taping of Belle and Sebastian. While the wait outside was gruelling--especially while watching VIP/press and industry people walk right in without having to wait as long, the show was very well worth it. I wish the band had played more songs off IYFS or the 2 current eps, but still, being witness to a slew of new songs certainly made the event interesting. Part of the excitement was also seeing the notoriously camera-shy band in person--quite a good-looking band, eh?--as well as having the back of my head gloriously presented before the cameras as they craned and dollied here and there 'round them. Isobel sang the first song, "Is It Wicked Not To Care". This was followed by "Like Dylan In the Movies", "Ease Your Feet In the Sea", "Century of Elvis", "Slow Graffitti", a flubbed and playful "Mayfly" (Stuart had to read the lyrics of a copy of the album that an audeince member donated), a slow (lazy?) "Lazy Line-Painter Jane", "Seymour Stein" (which I believe Stevie sang), "Sleep the Clock Around", the epic "Roller COaster Ride". It was beautiful. They were playful even tho nervous. I wish I saw them Saturday or Sunday, you lucky lucky people. When they asked for a cover, I'm glad no one yelled out Freebird; someone should have yelled out "Jennifer Juniper". I should have yelled out "Jennifer Juniper". Did anyone else think the host's intro kinda cheesy, or not genuine? francisco ----------------------------------------------------------------------- . I don't know who said XFM wasn't very alternative but I have heard Man Or Astroman, Cha Cha Cohen, Elastica and countless other wonderful tunes on it...Keith Cameron (is it him or Tommy Udo I can never remember) who does the late night prog plays good stuff... [Keith Watson] I can't really comment now as I'm only talking about the time a few years ago when they ran the pilot. I don't doubt that they play some good stuff, the problem is that some people make the following premise: Alternative = Good Mainstream = Crap Whereas I try to make the distinction more like: Good = Good Crap = Crap It's based on a lemma which states that 99.9% of ALL styles of music are crap - no matter where you look.
