Excellent show last night, as everyone can attest. Especially liked the (chord) "They let Lisa ... oh shit" (wrong chord) routine from Stuart, when he had to go off to the side with the guitarist and get a quick refresher. I think I can trace his confusion to earlier in the day. Before the show, I was checking out the Michael Stipe photograph show -- 2x Intro, a record of a Pattie Smith tour. (Don't quit your day job, Michael!) It's in the basement of the concert auditorium, and people were scurrying about trying to prepare rooms for the band to hang out in. So I'm rounding the corner and this blond bloke with a British-type jumper -- you know, horizontal red stripes, high stiff collar, zipper -- and a clipboard (learning last minute songs?) looks up at me. I think, hmm, he looks familiar and sure enough it's Stuart, checking out the Michael Stipe show. So what does one do in this situation, confronted by a brilliant yet shy singer? Ask for a photo? Joke about haggus? I smiled, anyway .... minutes later he was running off towards some blue doors and the concert people were yelling "No, that's the wrong door, Stuart! Sinister: B&S in boston

Again a wonderful experience to see one of my favorite bands. This time I also had the opportunity to see them with 700 other nice people. Although Boston isn't known for its preshow meet ups, ours happened to be some 400 people crowded outside the auditorium 1 hour before doors opened. "Organize Yourselves" demanded Middle East Nazi Bilbo Baggins (who one year earlier yelled at Stephen Pastel for not being able to get his equipment out of the club on time before closing). But not even his pleas were able to straighten the line to the auditorium or alleve the pressures of some 50 odd people pushing me up the steps. Inside the venue I had the hellish task of organizing (i.e reserving seats for) a group of 8 people separated in the frenzy of lining up to get into the show. As I am frantically trying to reserve a seat, a young smiling sandy blond hair boy with a scottish accent is trying to procure a seat for his friend. He asks me if the one of the seats I am leaning over is reserved. My realisation that this was the lead singer of the headlining band was gradual and came in an epiphanic wave. I was speechless as I humbly relinquished my seat to his friend (fortunately, my girlfriend had found some seats in the next row). Later I would see Stuart M. laughing at the people, including myself, in front of the Tshirt venders frantically holding out their money. Containe was the opening band. I guess they are a sort of American indie-rock super group who sported (for the show) members of Versus, Pacific Ocean, and Yo La Tengo. I think they were great. They played the song they are probably most known for (the "I want to fuck you song"). The set was short (~5 songs) but the last song (does anyone know its name or where it comes from) really brought down the house. I and others agreed it was incredible. The Belle and Sebastian set was wonderful but whenever I see them (this was the third time) I am always faced with the (probably pathologic) paradox that although I am being raised to angelic heights through the experience, I am saddened that the show can't go on for ever and before I know it is over, and it was over. Our pleas for an encore went unheard but were nontheless quite expected. If Isobel feared that US audiences would not appreciate B&S, she was happily mistaken in Boston at least. Actions that would normally quite easily cause a crowd to turn on the performer (such as Stuart forgetting his riffs to Judy and the Dream of Horses) only further endeared the band. It seems as if all the US shows are already sold out and even the Tshirts are already sold out. 3 of the people in my office went to the show including myself and my officemate Zung has TBWTAS on repeat now (he does this to music). Other pleasant events that passed that evening involved a nice chat (whose topics included antidepressants and herbal relaxants) with the kind people in the band Toulouse (my favorite American band). (They are playing a free show at the MIT coffee house with Aden and the Aluminum Group and if anyone wants details I'd be happy to relinquish them via email.) Their new single on Scotland's Tinseltone records is fantastic. And their lead singer and guitarist is back to stay in Boston which is literally music to my ears. Sinister: Kinky Kitchen Utensils

On the day that Katrina told us that our dreams WILL come true, and David informed us of the massaging bonus effects of arab strap use (which I still don't understand, by the way...does it stop your Captain Mainwaring from standing fully to attention? Wouldn't that hurt? And isn't your clitoris up your bum? How does it massage up there?), I can think of nothing to say other than to point out a possibilty for UK listees to "enjoy" a bit of Dylan in the movies. According to my link with the outside world, Q, Channel 4 are showing "The Last Waltz", Martin Scorsese's film of The Band's final concert (I think) with lots of special guests, including Dylan. I watched this film once, and I thought it was absolute shit (apart from the monumental Staple Singers) from a musical point of view. But the behind the scenes stuff between songs is really good, especially if you like suffering and pain. My favourite moment is when the one with a beard and a wierd wahtahmelluns look in his eye explains what he likes best about touring, which is of course referred to as "the road". Sadly, I don't know what this man's name is, but I want to be like him. It's on tomorrow, according to Q, and it'll probably be on late at night, so you can video it and fast forward through the rubbish bits. Whilst researching my upcoming Northern Soul showdown, I happened upon the following: "Lynne signs her letters with "Keep the Faith". Lynne is a civil servant during the week. Lynne works in a newsagent on a Sunday morning. Lynne is into Northern Soul." and, perhaps even more revealingly: "But Keith is constantly on the floor, Keith is a good dancer, dedicated at it, elastic legs for it, hair blown specially for it." No further comment is necessary, I feel. Sinister: The Boston Show

Well, considering everyone in the crowd (you could hear a pin drop) knows every nuance of every song and wanted to hear them all, and this was the first gig of the tour, jetlag etc., they were great. they only played for about an hour so there were a lot of songs I would like to have heard, but... wanted more. when staurt played the piano, or toy keyboard, he disappeared from site, a bit disappointing when he sang the "hand over my mouth, hand over the window" song, and we couldn't see him. he mentioned since they were in Boston they should do a 15 minute version of Roadrunner (Jonathan Richman), and then did the first part of Boston's "More Than a Feeling." smashing stuff. Something seemed to have upset the woman who sings backup, did someone in the crowd say something nasty to her? Might explain why they did not do an encore, she was bummed. You see, all the previous albums have girls on the cover. This time, the girl is nowhere to be seen. Same with the arab strap. All you see is Chris with his eyes closed and his mouth slightly opened, as if both the girl and the arab strap were down under, if you know what I mean. But then again, that's what came to my mind when I first saw the album cover on the Jeepster website, and you couldn't see the sword really well. Jessica Vieira.
