It being the day that the boy with the arab strap came out, Andy dashed out to the shops, bought the CD and then made a quick tape copy for the car, being careful not to listen to the album whilst he recorded it so as not to spoil the surprise. You see the big plan was that we would start our holiday with the first listen to the album in the car (sad gits, I know.) Sinister: This Mortal Coil, half-remembered

Hello gang... In my grim, formative years I had a penchant for the foaming pit of studied melancholia and studio experimentation that was This Mortal Coil. Before my lingering 4AD-fetish had finally been extinguished by one too many Frank Black digipaks in the middle of this decade, I even persuaded someone who is now a Prominent Listee to obtain for me the box-set, comprising all three albums and a bonus disc of originals, from the United States. It was shortly after this that things rather fell apart - the originals, in all their hissy, dated glory, so far surpassed most of the TMC versions, that I vowed never to listen to a polished, avant-goth reading of a 70s folk-pop obscurity again. There were three LPs: "It'll End In Tears" (1984) - wherein Lisa Gerrard and Brendan Perry do their damnedest to turn Ivo Watts-Russell's pet project into a Dead Can Dance record, and Elizabeth Fraser wraps her larynx around Tim Buckley and Roy Harper; I puzzled for years about the heart-stopping opening lines to "Another Day", until I discovered that Mad Liz was warbling something like "You put the kettle on...". A couple of terrific Big Star covers too, one with Howard Devoto. "Filigree & Shadow" (1986) was twice as long, had lots of nice droney bits, helicopter noises and eerie androgynous spins on "Come Here My Love" (Van Morrison) and "I Must Have Been Blind" (Buckley again). "Blood" (1991) was my favourite record in the world for a good three months; there's a lot of guitar-waffle on there and too much of that Shelleyan Orphan woman, so I can't understand why. Kim Deal and Tanya Donelly do lovely things with Chris Bell's "You and Your Sister" (as featured on the Uncut sampler), and elsewhere there are not-too-bad interpretations of Emmylou Harris and Mary Margaret O'Hara songs. Ivo revived the project this year under the name The Hope Blister and, er, my Mum bought it me for my birthday (true !). Despite featuring songs from a couple of my fave records (Sylvian's "Beehive", Cale's "Paris 1919"), it's not much cop and just features the one vocalist (Louise Rutkowski). He will be strutting his stuff and spinning some mean tunes at Manchester's Smile. Anybody in the Manchester area that fancies going along and offering a bit of moral support would probably be appreciated. None of Smile's regulars like our little Robert. Something to do with his inability to fully understand the simple request "will you play some fucking Charlatans, PLEASE!!!". You'll be able to identify Robert by his big smile and abnormally petite feet. I've never dared look at his feet myself but I have noticed some shoes lying around his house that I assumed belonged to a small child. And tip for the day. If you're intending going along to any of the Rocket >From The Crypt gigs with Australian rock gods You Am I supporting. Be sure and get there early and don't miss one second of the antipodean legends. They blew Manchester away last night and they've helped me come to terms with the fact that I'm going to miss Motorhead's 20th anniversary gig on Friday. Boo! Hi all, I seem to be asking lots of pointless questions of late, so here goes another. Having brought this months issue of uncut (a film and music magazine, not one devoted to pre-bah mitzvah jewish boys) and there is a free 4AD sampler CD on it. There is a song on there by This Mortal Coil which sounds pretty good. Ws this a fluke or are they actually any cop? As for comments about other Jeepster bands, I managed to pick up the Salako album in a second hand shop for 6 quid. Its alright, a bit like the footballer of the same name, plenty of skill with no real result. Some good experimentalism (the first song is a whimsical pop song over a prodigy-style breakbeat) but without the tunes to make it worthwhile. And at 20 tracks its a bit of a haul, but with a bit of sharpening of their songwriting skills and a bit less self-indulgance they might become a very good band. Also got the Beta Band album which is a cracker and no mistake. In a lazy journalist way i would describe it as Gomez meets the Orb which, thinking about it, sounds a bloody awful combination but works out quite well. One final point, does anyone know when the new Boo Radley's album is out? Sorry for the non-B&S content and general rambling but i am bloody bored at work and as i've said before my friends have no musical taste so this is the only time i get to talk about this sort of thing. while communication can be so powerful, I can't say my own communications are entirely meaningful. my whole life, the things i think about are irrelevant to me. Spend ten hours a day trying to look busy, another 2 in traffic. My evenings and weekends are escapes for me. I feel human again, then. But even then, i don't say anything. I mean really say anything. I lead a secret life at work, full of emails from sweet people and music that my workplace laughs at secretly, uncomprehending. British pop, Brazilian music are escapes for me, partially because they aren't inspired by the things of America's heartland. And I'm at war with America's heartland and all it stands for ... I put the jeepster jpeg of that painting of two kittens at a lady's breast on my desktop (is that the tigermilk cover or a winner in a contest? it wasn't clear) and one of the girls made an exclamation of disgust, how sick the picture was. meanwhile, she spends time laughing at pornographic fetishy images and retards. She's going to the jimmy Buffet concert tonight. A nice girl for all that. When you're constantly a fish out of water, one needs a secret life, observant, half-dream, clear-eyed. But it makes me quiet, and unwilling to share or develop my true self. perhaps i should be braver, but courage without reason is just foolish aggression, and I have yet to create my mission.
