Hello All, Greetings from 65 degree springlike weather in NYC. Sorry to all in the Isles, probably dreary, huh? I would like some help sorting out some of this new stuff. As B & S, have in recent years reminded me, the music is out there we just have to (know where to)look. My New Years resolution is to reintroduce myself (and my very weary mates)to as much as possible. B & S seems to have done the trick for a while but now my appetite is as strong as it was after we first heard the Smiths, the Commotions, Aztec Camera, Bluebells, etc. BTW I know the Pale Fountains are older but I have never found any of their cds and i heard a compilation is (coming) out. Any Chameleons fans out there. Sinister: Docklands Blues from a Docklands blue

Me again, Carrick: congratulations on giving the definitive CS Lewis answer. The bus reference was particularly well spotted. I think our list will go down in the annals (hur hur, eh Duke) of music crit history for being the first set of people not to resort to the 'They sound a bit like Love, Nick Drake and The Smiths, you know?' stock answer when discussing B&S. Now we can all chuck CS Lewis into the mix with confidence. Hurrah. Hats off also for the v. funny 'She and Me' punchline in the same digest. Even more arch than Amelia's original connundrum. Now then, it's just occured to me that in having a player called Morrissey and in being central to the very existence of Half Man Half Biscuit, Gary's beloved Tranmere Rovers are THE indie football team. Unless you know better, of course... For all of Richard Ashcroft's efforts, my team Wigan Athletic has never had such cachet, except for having a couple of supporters who still rock top, baggy haircuts. These Floyd bootlegs I'm listening to today are great. I'm onto the post 'Wish You Were Here' years now and have a very fine recording of Roger Waters camply complaining to the set designers on the The Wall tour that they're 'cheating'. (Imagine him, hands on hips, chest puffed out, going 'Wall builders, wall builders. Stop buliding The Wall. You're cheating now...') But there remain two problems with working in Docklands (beside the obvious ones): indie T-shirt types are rarer than rocking horse droppings around these parts and there are about four steros and three computer games playing at the same time in this office I'm in. This might explain my 'interrupt mode' style postings. One good thing, though: you can look across the wharf and watch the odd cormorant perching outside the buliding. Who knows, maybe I'll get a shag by the end of the day. I think we should be told. OI, we're a first division side if you don't mind, second class maybe, but first division. Anyway, I hear that there is someone called Flushing Meadows playing for Mansfield reserves. ~~ There aren't, I've checked...but your keeper is not unlike the Statue of Liberty at times....boom boom. Sinister: spelling errors suck. big time. and something happened to me.

Hmm, a few spellerrs on my previos mail. Oh well... Last wednesday (two days ago, that is) I went to the old universityhouse here. Markus Nordenstreng, this ace finnish singer/songwriter was playing there, he was supporting this shitty band I'm not going to mention here. Well, I get there and hear three last songs from him. Got there 50 minutes too late. Ok, then I go to the bar to get me some beer. While I'm waiting there to get some service, this LOVELY looking girl, drunk as hell, comes next to me. And starts staring at me. I go all bonkers, Maybe she's interested in me? "You know, you remind me of this song", she says. Three songs instantly pop into my mind for some reason: 1) -Kylie Minogue: I should be so lucky. Cause she's lucky she saw me. 2) -Morrissey: Last of the famous international playboys. Pretty obvious, that one. 2) -Belinda Carslyle (or however her name is spelled): Heaven is a place on earth. Cause I'm nice and heaven is nice and I'm on earth and... Something. I know, sounds stupid, but that's how my mind sometimes works. I suggest these songs to her, but she shakes her head. "No. That new song by The Offspring, 'Pretty fly (for a white guy)'." Nice. I get my beer and go to the table where I tell my friend Aino about this. She laughs out loud. Too loud. "Well she kinda had a point!!!" Friendly fire. Some days just ain't it. I was wearing my darkblue jeans and study at stow t-shirt. Howcome she can say something like that??? Sinister: list of fun

Dear all, Martin here, back in good humour. Last night's gig at the Acoustic Caff was 100 times better than the night before. Indeed the night actually sold out (though Matinee made the princely sum of £8 from the door - listen guys, flyers are for handing in, not pinning to your kitchen wall). So now its down to some songwriting before our Poetry Caff outing in Feb and a Friday night headline at the Acoustic in March. Now I can cut back on the shameless self-publicity and concentrate on biscuit-munching meditations on Belle & Sebastian, love, lists and life. (By the way, can we guillotine the grammar debate, please? It's bad enough correcting spellings for a living, without having people do it to your personal thoughts. "As impersonal as a love letter from a sub-editor," was the only thing that uber-toff and Cosmopoltian's 4th placed woman of achievement (1996) Charlotte Eagar said that I could identify with in the short time that I worked for her this year.) I'm thoroughly enjoying list life at the moment, except for the lack of Courtney action. Love life's showing green shoots of recovery, too, after I got talking to a first year art student on the tube back from last night's gig. I'm not alone in falling in love with a different person every day on London's fabulous late-night transport network am I? B&S content shall unfortunately be restricted to buying Modern Rock Song in my lunch hour on Monday and playing it to death all week. Good to see the band getting their dues in Select magazine at last. Andy Perry and Roy Wilkinson must have beaten Chopper Harris into submission with the Arab Strap, as it were. I'm not a betting man, but after last week's 'death of youth culture' issue, it wouldn't surprise me if B&S made it to the cover of NME next week too, interview or not. In my brand new minidisc - bootlegs of Pink Floyd, circa Atom Heart Mother; ie slightly disturbing pastoral phase. Very interesting. Martin Horsfield, light headed PS/Sorry Gary. Course I know da'Rovers are a 1st Divsion side. I also remember how about twelve of you invaded the pitch and came into our end when we knocked you out of the Freight Rover around 1985. Still, you can't help but love a team that had Morrissey playing for them, can you? How could you let Ray Mathias come back to Wigan, though? That's two fucking great managers we've poached off you (though Bryan Hamilton's not that popular down Wigan way any more). Sinister: Kid's Stuff

Hooray I really like all this kids books stuff, but my absolute favourites were the series of books by Ursula Le Guin about Earthsea, I re read the first one last year and it's still ace. I think she's really a grown-up author, but ive never read any of those books. Does anyone know what theyre like? I've heard rumours of not good sci-fi which worries me. Did anyone else notice in the Independent on Sunday a couple of weeks ago that the cookery section suggested that your cooking might well be improved by listening to Belle and Sebastian.. does this mean we can expect a band appearence on Ready Steady Cook? Has anyone been listening to the Grandaddy album? They remind me of Pavement, with a bit of Neil Young chucked in for good measure. I dont think the album is exactly hard to come by but if someone wanted to swap tapes and send me some looper stuff that'd be fab. I met some school kids on the way to work this morning, ..we were playing at sliding on the ice, i didnt land on my arse AND I was late for work... result. Sinister: delurking and things

halloo sinisterians .. though i've been on the list for a while, i've not yet posted .. this is due largely to the fact that i'm a lurker by nature .. a voyeur, not a creator (this is why i'm a literature major and not creative writing). i cast my crush vote on an unsuspecting individual with whom i've been corresponding on a periodic basis and i hope they don't find out because i'll become flustered. this happens to me frequently as all my crushes always manage to find out about my secret interest in them .. it's a weird feeling, like how you feel when you're in the middle of a big clearing, naked, and your clothes are on the other side of the clearing and you know that everyone is watching you. you don't know whether to go get your clothes, or just stand there and act normal .. not that i've ever been in THAT situation before .. the other day i had a job interview early in the morning a few miles away, so i dressed nice and pretty and took the autobus to my interview .. however, i caught an earlier bus than i was planning and was 1hr 45mins early .. so i bought a banana and a cup of vanilla coffee from seven-eleven and went to the local park. it was soft and dewy and i was content to enjoy my banana and converse with two homeless fellows whilst lasted the duration of my wait. they shared with me many exciting things, as in how to obtain sexual favors from prostitutes in downtown los angeles and how to get free health benefits by posing as a mentally insane veteran. though i have no personal use for these nuggets of wisdom, it was quite nice to get a glimpse at the lives of others. i find myself strangely out of place on this list - in station, but not in spirit. i am resigned to listen to mainstream pop and rock that many might find vulgar and plain, and i am largely unaware of the musical trends that frequent the thoughts and posts of the traditional listee .. however, this is my post in life and i am happy to fill it. i do, however, revel in receiving cotton candy letters from cute twees who relish the construction of sentences and watching people on the autobus the same way i do. the ex-inhabitants of our apartment still receive an overwhelming amount of mail .. we forward their bills and correspondence but keep their magazines, which are unfortunately not that interesting if you don't gravitate toward the skanky and obscene. victoria's secret, glamour, vogue, vanity fair, cosmopolitan .. i keep the j. crew catalogues because i like their clothes, though i am too poor to buy them. i want to order a pair of mittens from them, however. we'll see .. on that note, i thought it would be fruitful to find out if there are any listees that live in the los angeles area. i ran into a nice boy at my university who was wearing the "study at stow" shirt, and i said "hi" and tried to talk with him, but he was rather glum and unenthusiastic so i let him be. i think it would be quite pleasant to orchestrate a friendly christmas party among us though i am too fearful to post that on the message board. anyone? and .. lastly .. i am in great need of the beat patrol and black sessions recordings, as they popped up without me knowing (and, being across the ocean, i was unable to be so affluent as to record them on my own). so i ask people who may have had this chance .. i can trade top-quality recordings of tigermilk, the 3 demos, the 2 radcliffe sessions, the 2 evening sessions, blank tapes, good friendship or a really good backrub. farewell and good night mark +----------------------------------------------------------------------+ +---+ Brought to you by the Sinister mailing list +---+ To send to the list please mail "sinister(a)majordomo.net".
