Hi, Yes, shock horror, I want to ask a B&S-themed question, although any replies should go here: jasonandreas(a)breathemail.net I was just wondering what most folks' stance was on the 3-track/4-track EP question. Should B&S release a 3-track single and storm their way to the top of the charts, destroying such monumental acts as Skooch and BreZe? Or, should they just stick to the 4-track that we know and love, thus denying them chart accessablity yet again. Or should we just bomb chart HQ until they relax their dumb rules a little. Remember, kiddies, reply to me, not the list. Let's try to keep Sinister alive this time (and yes, I know it was mainly my fault, and I can't apologise enough). Oh, oh. Here I am now. After weeks of silence. Ellen. I have been thinking of how to write this introduction since joining the list..But now I can't think of what I thought. I suppose I thought I'd check that I'd spelled all the words correctly and gotten the grammars right before posting... But that's hopeless anyway, since English, in spite of half a life of practice, still is a very foreign language to a Swedish speaking creature like me. Anyway, here I am. Miss me? Don't worry your aim will get better. Yes, rice crispy lovers everywhere, I regret to inform you that I am back from my 'Meet the Yankees: Final Destination Maine' Tour. Unfortunately, I didn't mean for it to turn into a Get Beat by the Yankees Tour for my beloved Braves. Alas, the season is over for them & Blake can continue mocking my unfaltering dedication to them. It was still a wondrous trip nonetheless. I'm in love. It's October (my favorite month) and I'm in love. Not with a guy (pfftt) but with Maine. It was absolutely gorgeous there. It was the perfect combination of trees and coastal area. There was an ethereal feel to it - like I was drifting through the state in a foggy dream. I expected the ruins of Manderlee to show it's face at anytime. Plus, there were tons of bookstores there. The old book bookstore variety (the best kind). Oh, how we plundered to our heart's delights. Finally, I found a copy of one of the literary list recommendations "The Sorrows of Young Werther" by Goethe. I read it while sitting on a bank of a small coastal inlet - the setting and the book were truly sublime. The best one from the list that I have read thus far! Obviously, I have changed my mind about forfeiting my computer use and unsubscribing to the list (sorry to get your hopes up). I just couldn't take the pain, especially since I just put my picture up. Well, it's of lil' llew, taken when I was four. I have decided that I'm not going to put up a recent picture of me unless I can have one of me on a record cover. It worked for dear Ciara - why not me? Can anyone give me a reason why a southern belle shouldn't grace the cover of a Belle and Sebastian cover? Plus, I couldn't leave the list right as I came up with a side project from my literary list. And you thought Gentle Waves & Looper were the only side projects to be reckoned with? Yes, I've decided to compile a United States Sinister List Directory. I have often noticed people asking out into the nether reaches of cyber space if there are other people out there who like Belle & Sebastian. Frequently, this is asked half-heartedly since its most dubious that there are other people in Utah (or Oklahoma, or Iowa, or North Carolina, or *insert your uncultured state here*) who also have such good taste in music. With a directory, one can quickly find others who are nearby who are also b&s fans. It will also be a great resource to find out the great local spots that would be of interest from residents of the place your visiting Good bookstores, clubs, record stores, dentist's offices, massage parlors, etc. In order for it to work, everyone has to participate. This means even you shy and bashful lurkers. I don't think that anyone will become victimized with torrents of e-mail from being on this list. Just an occasional hello or such. So come out of the shadows and play in the sun with the rest of us. OK list opening again now. Here's a mail to start you off - Stuart M and Chris's little column they're writing for the Glasgow University Guardian paper (not THE Guardian). Katrina from the band office sent it me to send along - she says she will send them regularly, bless her. And yes, the irony of it being a diary is not lost on me. Now, do the right thing. Honey ******* DIARY OF A BAND 29th September 1999 Belle & Sebastian write for Guardian. No, really. My first deadline is here and I am not in LA. This doesn't happen to Honor Fraser. It's not even as I've had a particularly busy day. I skived the morning because I'd been playing bass particularly badly on a tune last night. I didn't want to hear it again straight away. After I'd cleaned the house I spent some time phoning record dealers down south to try to get some new tunes for DJ gigs I've got coming up. The band has been in the studio for the past several weeks recording for a new LP. It should have been finished by now but it isn't, although a lot has been done. The other week everyone got a letter from the label with a schedule explaining how it takes 20 weeks from when we're finished to when the album is released. This means it won't be out until well into next year, which wasn't what we'd originally hoped. Sometimes the process of recording can be pretty wearing. After your initial enthusiasm for a new song and enjoyment of playing what seems like a good take, you then have to face up to your own inability or lack of taste. In the cold light of day the tune is worked on until it's finished to everyone's satisfaction. When you are playing you can't think you're good. Afterwards is harder. That's when you start comparing your efforts to your favourites. Fortunately, I work with people with the talent and enthusiasm to see things through and have a purpose to what they're doing. When I finally went along to the studio today Bel was mixing a different tune and it sounded amazing. Chris Geddes to be continued ... DIARY OF A BAND 13th October 1999 The next thrilling installment of 'Guardian's' exclusive Belle & Sebastian diary The band aren't up to much at the minute so there's not much to tell you. Bel's making her second LP just now so most of us are playing for her. It's sounding very good just now, but she's got quite a bit to go so I shan't curse it by telling you much about it. I bumped into Richard this morning on the way to Dublin. It's quite rare to see him, although I share a flat with him. He manages to be the only one in the band to live a sort of celebrity lifestyle apart from maybe Stuart David. Mick gets around quite a lot but doesn't quite have the knack of stepping easily from hotel lobby to award ceremony to party the way Richard does. Richard told me he was going to Dublin to pick up an award but fuck knows what it's for! Mick has just been voted 48th most eligible bachelor in Scotland by a Sunday newspaper. Probably some horny journalist just made it up but it may help him to get invited to the sort of parties that Richard gets invited to. Just as long as he keeps playing with the fabulous Amphetameanies, because that's what he's best at. I haven't seen Sarah, but I do know that Stevie's gone to play jazz with a man called Bill Wells in Aberdeen. Beans has gone to play Northern Soul in the south, and Stuart David's book 'Nalda Said' came out this week, which is very good. So I think everyone's pretty happy. Me and Richard spent last weekend collecting jumble in a van for our sale on Saturday. I put up notices in the University but you didn't come. It must've been too early for you. You missed a lot of good stuff. It's a good way to save on clothes and furniture. But it's funny the stuff people try to give you ... old pants, little bits of plastic. We spent most of the time trying not to piss ourselves. Sinister: the world is as soft as lace

Hi All, I was driving in my car today on my way to an appointment for my new job as a massage therapist. Yes, I'm no longer the boy who sells arab straps, for those keeping track. But don't worry, I'll still let you all know whenever there's a mention of Belle and Sebastian in any porno mags I happen to come across.:) It's an absolutely gorgeous day for a drive and I was listening to some Felt live stuff(thanks richard). And it got me to thinking.... My obsession with Felt started way back when I was just a little pup. I was maybe a freshmen in high school and I used to religiously watch MTV's 120 minutes because I knew they might play The Smiths or one of those other bands I loved but nobody else I knew even heard of. I used to watch the videos and daydream about wearing all black clothes and wearing my hair in a funny do(those things didn't come for a couple of years.) Anyways...one night they played a video by this band Felt, who I had never heard of. I remember there was this guy wearing black clothes and he had on this round black hat with a wide brim, I remember him sitting or standing on some stairs singing and he just had this look on his face I can still remember to this day. Does anyone know the video I'm talking about? I'd be eternally grateful if I know which song it was for, as I don't even remember. I was never able to find any records of theirs or any mention of them in any of the magazines I read. Well...things happened and the years went by with many records bought in the meantime, but alas, no Felt records to be found. Then one day I decided to get my computer out of the closet and get on this internet thing people were talking about. I joined up on the indiepop-list and heard a great deal about Belle and Sebastian. This was right when the Lazy Line Painter Jane ep came out so I bought it to check it out. I immediately bought Sinister and fell in love. You all know how that goes. As you know in the liner notes of said cd was a mention of that Felt band. I remembered that video from oh so long ago and thought if these guys like 'em I've got to try and find something by them. Thanks to the wonders of "the internet" I was able to get an lp of theirs, and fell in love again. I feel like I owe it all to Belle and Sebastian, and every time I listen to my Felt lp's I say a little thank you to them. Then I met up with this little list we're all on. Besides the day to day enjoyment of the actual list, I've gotten a great deal more from it. I'm now a full fledged live show bootleg trader. I owe it all to that guy who taped the New York shows("if they play reel around the fountain I'll shit") and them made an offer to tape them for anyone who sent him blank tapes. I didn't know people taped shows like that let alone made copies and traded for other ones. Now I've got quite a nice little collection. If it weren't for this list I can't imagine I'd even have known about B&S coming to the states. I never would have been able to travel to Chicago to see them. I'm sure I don't have to tell you how grateful I am to the list for that. I've still not actually met anyone on the list, but have emailed with two others in the Cleveland area, I'm sure we'll meetup eventually. I've been trying to write a response to all the destructive rubbish that's been flying around on Sinister for two days now. I've been trying to be mummy, and soothe you all, and set off things in a nice tone again. I can't do it, so you will all be subjected to a rant and an ultimatum - digest users will get a digest consisting of just this too, if I can generate one. Here's what will happen now: * This is a mailing list for people who like Belle and Sebastian. Belle and Sebastian haven't released anything for some time, nor have they been committed to prison for drug trafficking recently. This means that we as a community should use the list to be ourselves, and as such we don't have to spend our time talking about B-sides if we don't want to. It does NOT mean, however, that we can throw any old crap into everyone else's mailbox. We have a reference point: Belle and Sebastian. It's subtle; you have to use your brain and think about whether you'd want to read what you yourself send, times 1000. Everyone can see who is doing this and who is not, and some of you are making damn fools of yourselves. It's quite clear who wants the list to flourish, and who just wants to drown it with me-me-me. I will henceforth act on this. * At 8:00 pm GMT tonight, I will reopen the list. I might send on a *few* mails that have been bounced in the interim in due course when I'm up to it, subject to what I said in my previous mail. If I don't, and you want yours sent on, and you're sure it's appropriate, and you don't have a copy, you can mail me and I can try and dig it out when the red mist clears. From that time forward, anyone who clearly doesn't give a sod about the list rules will be removed from list membership. Each of you agreed to abide by these rules when you joined Sinister. http://www.majordomo.net/sinister/faq.html * I expect no repetition of this tired, pointless, and destructive thread about list content. Anyone who indulges themselves by digging it all up will be shoved into the nursery or removed completely, forever, with no court of appeal. This applies to ANY reference to the whole thing, including talking about talking about list content. If you start up again, individual people or even the whole list will go into moderated mode, which means I check each mail and pass it on - at this rate, every few days or so. The same applies to even the merest hint of a flame or nasty comment aimed at any other list member, and you won't have time to tell me "oh I was joking" - you'll just be gone. I won't warn you individually if I do this, it'll just happen. If you think I'm being a fascist, move on and find another list, or make one yourself. That's what the Internet's about. I will not maintain this list to watch it crash and burn. * Any one-line smart-arse posts will be dealt with similarly, and no I don't care if I sound like a school teacher. Anyone who's at the top of the "I've posted more than anyone else this week" list should see this as a negative rather than a positive: a squashing of list diversity by shouting too loud to become some sort of list "personality". They should henceforth shut up a bit if they care about the future of the list. Right now, my favourite list members are the lurkers - why don't a few of you de-lurk a bit and show the "top 10" how to really make a list work? * Anyone who wants to talk about list content can MAIL ME. My promise, as ever, is to pass on to the list what people tell me. Anyone who indulges their ego by spreading their unwarranted opinions on the list itself - which are usually the same opinions as everyone else's but with their name on the bottom - will be duly ignored, as they clearly aren't trying to contribute to list coherence, but just want a bloody great row. You can have that on many other lists without the irritating intervention of a list mummy, so go off and do it. If you do mail me, bear in mind that M.E. hasn't been kind to me recently, so you might not get a reply, or you might get a general one a week later. But your comments are all taken onboard. Those of you who have been on the list for years: stop moaning about what the new people are like and post something intelligent for god's sake. * Those whose inclination is to write what's been called "dear diary" posts should see this as a wakeup call to pull back and to think whether what they're contributing is for the interest of others or because they like an audience. Just because four people mail you and tell you they like your posts doesn't mean everyone else does. Would you read 1140 other posts like yours? This applies equally well to those who think that the list consists of the 10 people they see every week and that everyone needs to know which shops they went to. * Those whose inclination is to run to the list when they're sad or miserable and mail 1140 people asking for a hug should think whether they'd do the same in a pub, or whether they'd sit at a table with a few friends and do it that way instead. If the answer's still the former, then they'd better explicitly tell people to mail them privately or the wrath of god will fall on them. Similarly, to anyone who feels it's their place to mail back said 1140 people with a "hope it goes ok, buddy" message: Mail them directly if you want to be their friend. When you mail pointless things like this to the list, you just fan the flames. * Those for whom life generally swims along and who can't conceive of how anyone could be so "pathetic" as to not just get off their butts, stop whining, and "seize the day", have a little think about what a horror life can be for some people. Have a bit of compassion and stop flag-waving. If you have comments about the list, MAIL THEM TO ME, or be brave enough to mail directly the people whose posts you're referring to. Don't indulge yourself in displays of public brow-beating. Just because four people mail you and tell you they agree with you doesn't mean everyone else does. * To people who've been on the list for a long time: you should know damned well that this kind of action leads to List Death. The ONLY WAY to make the list what you want it to be is to post to it what you'd like to see from others. Fullstop. Criticising other people's posts on the list is a negative and destructive act and will cause a pointless and stupid escalating war like we've seen. Christ, haven't you been around long enough to see this a hundred times? * Finally: I don't buy the delete-key argument when pushed to its limits. The list will not survive if everyone's mailbox gets swamped by over 30 mails a day. This list will not stay a community if the majority of you are only reading 10%, or 2% of the mails on it. It will fragment, and everyone will stop caring about everyone else - you'll all be flying blind. List history has taught us this. So if there's been a lot of mails today, SEE that and pull back - let things settle. Let people catch up. If YOU don't have time to read the list, don't send more crap on top of the pile. Everyone will be able to see who's responding to this, and who doesn't care less. And I'll do something about it, and you'll think I'm mean, and I'll just do it anyway. And if you've posted more than a few times in a given week, and you just keep sending more in, and people complain to me that "someone" is dominating the list, as they do, I will do something mean too. And you'll hate me for that, and I'll feel bad, and I'll just stop the whole damn thing. I'm ill and I'm tired and I've nearly had enough. - - - - - - - I don't care if this mail sounds harsh, frankly, this time. I don't care much if it reduces list traffic to a dribble for the next week or so - it'd be a blessing. If it doesn't do the job, it's time for something radical. If we get 60 mails consisting of "hello Sinister's back!" and little else, or pointless rubbish that no-one cares about, or little post-battle snipes, or anything that isn't thought out and of interest to at least 50% of the list, I'll know it's past it's sell-by date. If you're thinking of posting right now, stop and think if you really need to, and if you're contributing to Sinister's readability. Sinister will only survive if YOU think carefully, and everyone will be able to tell who's helping and who's not. Everyone's eyes are on you. Sinister is the Belle and Sebastian mailing list. Think about it. Several close friends suggested to me yesterday I should shut down the list permanently before it gets any worse. It'd break my heart. Sinister: My recommendations: Godspeed You Black Emperor! and Weezer

ZvoRuna, You requested recommendations from the wide world of sinister land. Two recommendations that I offer for your listening pleasure are Godspeed You Black Emperor! and Weezer. These aforementioned groups sound about as different as one can possibly imagine, but they (with Belle and Sebastian) represent the best music, in my humble opinion, to arise in the last five years. But if you don't mind reading paeans of the highest order, may I state some reasons why I request these two? Godspeed You Black Emperor! are the best group that I've encountered this year. Their sound is an ineffable amalgam of Richard Wagner, the Who, and, on occasion, Gorky's Zygotic Mynci. However, a better description of their brilliance is that they provide the soundtrack for the apocalypse. The nine members of GYBE!'s live performances include five guitarists (3 six-stringers and 2 bassists), two standing percussionists, a cellist, and a violinist. Suffice it to say, the five guitars create a soundscape that crescendos (and diminuendos) to unparalleled degrees in the history of music (only Richard Wagner and, more recently, Mogwai offer suitable comparisons). The percussionists typically begin at pianississimo volumes and imperceptibly build to fucking break the roof of the venue or blast a stereo, replete with marching beats, an incessant crash cymbal and a bass drum that seems to blast through your chest with every stroke. Last but not least, the cellist and violinist appear to be Julliard's brilliant but rowdy rejects that complement and drive GYBE!'s timbre into uncharted regions that Beethoven could only dream about. I would purchase GYBE!'s EP "Slow Riot for New Zero Kanada" before obtaining the LP "f#a# infinity" as the EP contains their best track to date, viz., "Blaise Bailey Finnegan III", and the drum-laden "Moya" that sends quivers through my stomach at the final crescendo. However, I don't seek to give you the impression that "f#a# infinity" is pants; to wit, it may be the best LP of 1998 (including Belle and Sebastian's "The Boy with the Arab Strap"). However, to novel ears, it may seem tedious at times building to crescendo and the frequent drum loops and other miscellaneous noises, e.g. train sounds, bagpipes, and drone chants, may initially be an unpalatable morsel in one's musical mouth. Now to change my direction entirely, allow me to deliver a panegyric to my favorite American pop band, those catchy-as-a-cold-standing- butt-naked-in-the-Antarctic dorks from California, Weezer. They only have two albums, the self-titled release in 1994 and 1996' "Pinkerton", but for the amount of material that they have, to put it bluntly, there is no better pop band ever to grace the earth. Only Felt and Belle and Sebastian offer suitable comparisons. And, speaking of Felt, I think that there are tremendous similarities between Weezer and the Lawrence-led Birminghamians. Just as Felt is post-Sex Pistols British art pop that emphasizes punk's melodic dimension, Weezer is post-Nirvana American punk that exploits melodies pervasive in the early stages of "alternative" (as well as 1950s pop, but that's another story!). In addition, Lawrence of Felt and Rivers Cuomo of Weezer leave no doubt who is in control of their respective groups. Both maintain firm reigns upon their band's sound, and both have had members of their groups leave due to this fact (Maurice Deebank of Felt and Matt Sharp of Weezer, now with the Rentals). However, both are absolute geniuses (and Rivers is truly a brilliant man as well - he graduated with a B.A. from Harvard in English) when it comes to sculpturing pop masterpieces. I would start with Weezer's self-titled album, which features "Buddy Holly" - their biggest hit in the U.S. so far and, with its parody of Happy Days, it may be the best video I have seen. However, their second album "Pinkerton" is lyrically different, as virtually every song is about foibles and failings with the opposite sex, but the power pop is still there in spades. And there is no album that I have been awaiting more than Weezer's forthcoming third album. Christ, it's been a long time! Sinister: Hull...

Well, having travelled up on the worlds smelliest ever train from Derby to Hull (it's never dull...ummm, yes it is) to see the mighty Pavement (yes, HULL. in front of ooo, about 100 people!) i was super suprised to see no less than 3/8 ths of B&S loitering with considerable intent. Well, Mick was, as he was about to play his trumpeting thing with Salako (talk about a band improving since you last saw them!!). I spoke to Stuart David about some things, and he seemed very sweet, although i think i scared him. I then managed to elbow Sarah in the head during Pavement, for which i can only apologise, although it wasn't *too* hard....it was all the excitement and the sweaty man that made me do it. I will not be going back to Hull again, and i think it is best that i don't talk to any B&S people again. My friend pointed out how scary i am when i am talking to people i 'admire'. Sorry Bob and Stuart....! Hello Flotsam ! Hello Jetsam ! I've been thinking a lot about Art lately. Not ol' BrightEyes Garfunkel you understand. Actually, I've only been thinking about Art this afternoon and even then not all the time, but I've already reached some unstartling conclusions of quite bottomless vapidity. First up, I thought about going to check out some of the contenders for this year's Anthea Turner Prize - y'know, Tracey Ermintrude, the Andrews Sisters, that Momus fella, Barry Sheene. But then I realised that I simply didn't have to; I'd already formed thorough and quite incontestable opinions on all the nominees simply by reading about their work in the papers. It would seem that Tracey Thing and the Thompson Twins have made the Next Great Leap in becoming genuinely conceptual artists. Oh, you'll hear Damien Thorn, Captain Peacock and all the rest describe themselves as conceptualists, but they still have to fill the bloody tanks full of formaldehyde, and chop up the sheep, don't they ? All in the name of creating a tangible object with which one is then supposed to share the same approximate physical space. Sod that. Making stuff ? Looking at stuff ? Old hat, pal. Just make it up. Tell people you've suspended a packet of Ritz crackers over a trough of liquid helium and called it "The Impossibility of Tea-Time in the Mind of A Young Conservative", but don't actually do it, for Pete's sake ! My 'installation' which is currently *not* at the Serpentine Gallery (or anywhere else for that matter) consists of a video loop of Sarah Martin mouthing the names of UK racecourses ("Chepstow", "Goodwood", "Epsom"...) inside a fragranced booth of frozen puppies. I call it "No Sir, I Can't Boogie". Better than gawping at some stinky bed, surely ? Stevie Truffaut said something a while back about the failure of oft-promised narrow-casting in the media to materialise and how everything had basically gone to cock. Or tits. He'd do well to remember Gus Anabaptist's 1977 concrete poem, "where it is, not need be": --- When they start to micro-niche We'll all be left reading micro-fiche --- Think on, young man. Ooh, I see the BWP is provoking a little discussion on this side of the pond now. For what it's worth, I'm siding with the Ginger Avenger, as opposed to Love Troucheon. My blood was positively refrigerated. I guess it depends on the frame of mind in which one watches the film; Lickle Stevie and his Speshul Fwiend were obviously distracted.
