Mummy, I woke up and found an article about Aibo on (in?) a newspaper. It says; Sony is selling Aibo Special Edition ( 10,000 limited ) ! When sony sold Aibo for the first time, only Americans and Japanese could buy them. But this time, people who live in Europe can buy them too. To get Aibo, you need to take a reservation and win a prize in a lottery. I know I shouldn't have done anything to extend this discussion of the list on the list, so if you have a reply, please send it privately to me. Ah Sinister, settle down. Again. We've seen this before in the 2+ years we've been together. People come, people go, people write brilliantly and people write shit, we spat and we hug and we utilize our delete keys when it's something we aren't interested in. Sinister imitates life -- no, it *is* life in a lot of ways. Which brings me to the point I'd like to risk making. I've always thought that it's a very lovely thing that people feel safe enough, or valuable enough, to sit down (I picture them late at night) and pour their hearts out on Sinister when there doesn't seem to be anyone else around to listen to them. That they feel people on the list will care about them and they won't be alone with whatever is troubling them, at least in the moment they're feeling so down at their keyboards. I always thought it spoke well for all of us that people could do that when they needed to. No matter if half or more of us were deleting after the first sentence. At least we did it silently, and some of us might have been touched and sent an encouraging word along. I know mailboxes get burdened awfully and I know people should think before they write drivel. I don't enjoy reading about or care about lots of things like "what I did this weekend with my friends and what I wore" or "who can I have a crush on/who will have a crush on me this week, go look and see how great I am" or "I'm a poor penniless student with 25 papers to write." Personally I'd like to hear more things that have some heart in them, or beauty. But some people do and I can make what I don't have any interest in go away with one stroke of my finger like I throw out junk mail that comes in the post. I know people have indulged things that I have written here. So, I wouldn't much think of telling anyone I don't care about their lives because it seems mean if they want to talk about it. It seems doubly mean to tell someone who has poured out real and true sadness that they're pretty much a pain in the ass. Yes, everyone should think before they post, but sometimes the pain is pretty big, I'd think, and needs a release. Who can think then? I find it hard to begrudge that. Too much of any one thing isn't good. We're a diverse bunch. We've got lots of stories to tell. hello, dahlings. i have discovered the root of the whining teenagers problem: it's lesley jo's absence. for reals. lj writes the most personal and sometimes painful posts ever, but they are always written in a witty and engaging manner. i can't do it, which is why i leave my miserable drivel at home. new listees are truly truly deprived, as they haven't heard tell of the art-girl-saga or been privy to lj's amazing stories. subliminal message: i miss lesley jo! i don't even know the girl. oh wait, i don't know any of you. not really. but damnit i miss that girl! two belle experiences this weekend: 1) written on the bathroom wall in the beehive coffeehouse in pittsburgh's southside: "poupee de cire, poupee de son". (also written, "boy you better make her raspberry swirl" (tori)) 2) an IYFS poster appearing in the promise ring's new video (for "emergency! emergency!"). which comes as no surprise after jason (guitarist) wore an IYFS shirt in an interview on mtv this summer. come to think of it, that boy wears lots of other bands' shirts, it seems. someone doubted the genius of tim kinsella of cap'n jazz and joan of arc, and for this he will be brutally punished. someone else expressed lukewarm feelings toward rainer maria, and he too shall be dealt with accordingly. the connection with b&s is obvious: beautifully crafted music and wonderful lyrics. i mean, duh. ;) someone else tried to defend his/her alleged scenester status, and i think if you feel compelled to do that, it's all over. it's also funny. not funny haha, funny like i told you so. funny haha is that story of the man chopping off his hand. that's fucking hilarious. or should i say f-ing hilarious? oh my god i am officially hooked on the lucksmiths, after hearing only "guess how much i love you." i'm supah jealous of my best friend in boston who gets to see them next week (who is Also hooked after hearing only that song -- make the connection, kids: i put it on a tape for her), and i've ordered her to purchase records for me so as to avoid obscene import prices. hopefully. but i may be abusing the list asking for a tape of their stuff fairly soon... i am falling for this new trend which is amusingly called "casio-core." you know, recorded beats and casio keyboards, etc. i saw the band winterbrief play this past weekend in pittsburgh and i dug it hardcore. um, not That kind of hardcore. oh never mind. This past weekend i drove to washington and back listening only to Tigermilk, Sinister, Arab Strap, and Jim Croce's Greatest Hits over and over. From this statement you might quickly judge that i am in need of some musical expansion. for this, i am asking your help. the last CD i bought was.. um.. Tigermilk. years ago i used to buy a new/used CD every friday... i have been slipping only because 1) i am finding it increasingly difficult to find music that i like as much as B&S 2) i just fell out of the loop and don't know where to look anymore for great music 3) i am broke 4) all of the above but especially 1. well regardless i do want some help. i haven't even heard Looper or the Gentle Waves yet.. should i start there? i want something as good as B and S... i want to get those inside tremors that i feel when i listen to B and S. i know you can't guarantee me that.. but, well.. who are your other TOP favourite bands? oh i read mention here of Boys Don't Cry which i did see during the course of my visit to DC. it was.. well.. indescribably horrifying and heartbreaking and poignant. i very highly recommend it. bye! z- ps many of you are fantastic writers.. i read your posts and wonder if you make a living from your prose because so much of it is absolutely beautiful to read _____________________________________________ Free email with personality! Sigh, I bought Tindersticks' first album and it is unbelievable (so much beautiful, atmospheric music and melody). I would have never bought Tindersticks if it wasn't for B&S. I was thinking of drawing a "musical tree" to trace the albums that I have purchased because of B&S. Hefner and Nick Drake are two others that I have bought because I read that they have similarities with B&S. My cat is getting fat. Oops, was that too personal? Oh sinisterines, and ites, please entertain me but don't tell me about your personal life. Ha! What a joke that statement is. Since some of you selfish bastards feel the need to be entertained, informed, amused and/or enlightened by witticisms by people YOU HAVE NEVER MET, I thought it would be good to do a survey to find out how well my posts are going (since we all like to judge people solely based on their email/writing skills). How do you rate Paul's post? 1) Entertaining 2) Amusing 3) Witty 4) Informing 5) Boring and tedious, please ban him from the list now! Dammit! 6) what the, where am I? I'm sorry to bother you Paul, but I do think that this is important... I think that maybe it's time for a listmummy intervention, just in case this escalates, as I don't want anything to happen to the list. The main argument in my favour is that myself and many others only turn to the list for support because either (a) our friends are insensitive, (b) the relative anonyminity of the list is theraputic or (c) the whole idea of Sinister is a that of a caring, sharing community. If you could listen to Robert McTaggart's argument too and then make some sort of solid 'ruling' on the subject once and for all, just to stop any wee battles before they start. what we talk about when we talk about belle and sebastian Lists and list traffic Sometimes it's bumper-to-bumper and sometimes it's open highway. But if you ride your bike, there's always wind in your hair and you can coast on by and occasionally stop to look at the view. This isn't necessarily an analogy, I was just thinking about cars. That is an analogy... A list is quite the strange organic thing. where have all the jygsawdaves gone? Dr. Who when I was in a photojournalism class at uni, I would always sing the dr. who theme song every time I went through the tartus in the photo lab. or I would say in a dramatic voice "the taaaarrrtus...". No one understood. It was fun for me though. Degrassi & Jump Street Always thought Degrassi was crap Cdn tv, but watched it anyway. Just like I watched the Littlest Hobo. So bad, yet not U.S.-tv bad, just Canadian-low-budget bad. There's a difference. Never saw any stars though, but because 21 Jump Street was filmed in Vancouver, I knew about 50 people in highschool who either had bit parts or were extras, brushing the likes of famesters such as Johnny Depp and Richard Geco (sp? obviously not so famous now...) Hastings 10, y'all. Cheese yum. Currently on a brie fixation. Sushi Yum. Time to brag: I eat it *all* the time and I am not rich by any means. This is because I live in the "Pacific Rim" as businesspeople like to call it. All you can eat sushi and $5.95 sushi specials w/ miso soup! all over town. Divine food it is. infp stuff Labels. But it's true, belle and sebastian speak to my infp self and upon first hearing them this was a great surprise, even before I knew anything about infp and other such personality acronyms. TOM WAITS!!! Saw him sun oct 17. He is the greatest. There was about an inch of dust all over the stage and instruments. He did songs spanning all his albums and danced like a hobo marionette. He told stories about rats falling from buildings. It was a beautiful and weird, amazing show. Plus, Tim Robbins and Susan Sarandon were sitting 10 seats over and one row up from us. Ooooh, big C celebs. But I forgot about them as soon as Tom came down the aisle, shouting through a megaphone and throwing glitter dust. The crowd went wild... Pterodactyls Poetic poop all over my virtual apartment. I've been meaning to gather it up and plaster it on the list, but traffic has been high and poetry is apt to be ignored, no matter who the poet. The poetry pterodactyl still flies overhead though, threatening, threatening... Soap and Beauty Fight Club affected me, oh yes. I went off on mental tangents and couldn't leave my seat. Ikea always did scare me anyway. American Beauty is completely amazing. Kevin Spacey stuns me. And the writing is excellent. And all the deep reds, ooooh. Alice in Wonderland I just fell for the flu shot scam (it was free b/c I work in a hospital) and they gave me a candy and an extremely twee sticker of a bear holding two pink balloons and bending down to pick up a third he's dropped. I don't understand. I put it on my computer screen. Alice in Wonderland warped my fragile little mind. My dad thought it was bedtime reading for seven year olds. I am glad he did. Through the Looking Glass got a little beyond weird though. I will have to go back and reread now that I've done all the necessary drugs. Out of all four seasons, I choose autumn. It's been a bad day and I'm determined to make it worse. MUSIC I love Rainer Maria, I'm not so keen on Joan of Arc. I could understand why belle and sebastian fans would like these bands, but I always resented the emo kids in bowling green who told me how much I sucked for not acknowledging Tim Consalo as the supposed genius he is. I saw him live, listened to his records and I have to admit I was a bit more impressed with Jen Wood than I was with him AGONY FAMILIE Anyone need an agony uncle but you don't want to annoy that ultra hipster belle and sebastian fan on the go? Feel free to write me and we'll chat. I wouldn't mind getting to know some of the sinister kids out there. I won't bring up my family problems on the list anymore. When my gran dies, I don't want to not be entertaining, so I'll just take a few days off so those of you out there who don't want to be bother won't be bothered. Honestly though, they have a good point. This list grows every day with new people graduating from the nursery. Personal lives tend to be repetitive and mundane, mine included. However, I would like to point out that apart from Tag, most everyone who bitched was being rude. So shame on you (I'm sure I'll get flamed for this, probably by the same people who don't have the time to be bothered to read about others personal lives. Whatever.) Okay, since we've got this all straightened out and since Belle and Sebastian haven't done anything new for like 6 months, I don't expect to get another digest for another 2 or 3 weeks.
