there was a short interview with looper on ch4 teletext this morning (the planet sound pages which i believe now start at page 450 having moved a week or two ago). er, can't remember a lot about it but here's something. the book publishing deal came from him mentioning it in a review he wrote for the Times, apparently he had a couple of companies write to him with offers after that. he's also written two or three others but nalda was the best. he also started another during the american tour but didn't want to reveal details. he reports that work on the new b&s album is coming along very slowly but that looper album 2 is proceeding nicely. on y2k he revealed that he's been stocking up on tinned food just in case. er that was about it, i think. andy tinned food's all well and good as long as you don't mind eating it cold. i think the major problem will be power or, rather, that power will be the most important thing that could have problems. human nature will prevail though, people will pull together. oh, i re-read the article about 'romance' last night and it was the reviewer's first experience of an erection on screen rather than the first allowed in britain, my mistake. she (like myself) obviously doesn't frequent the same cinemas as tag or david. 8) pete miller: nope, it was bull hemel hempstead that i worked at, not bull in slough although there was talk of me having a job there once i was deemed surplus to requirements in HH. it never happened though (headcount freeze, blah blah blah) i could see tim hopkins every day for a week and scare him with a different 4ad t-shirt every time. oh, ok, not sunday. ===== andrew dean (koogydelbbog(a)yahoo.com) __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Sinister: The things I know

Is it just me or do others not like the same things they watched as children? I was thinking yesterday how stupid shows like Diffrent Strokes and Dukes of Hazzard are, and yet that I watched them religiously when they were on, and had a disdain for shows like MASH and Taxi, which I think are pretty much brilliant. Not only that, but those old crappy shows make me kind of sick--I can't believe I ever had that sort of aesthetic. I find myself watching "friends" religiously in syndication. And is this just a US thing? I noticed that all news reporters identify themselves as "so and so from ABC News," etc. It's like they are closing a letter or handing out their business card or something. I started reading "Fight Club." Now I may go see the film. My mum's better now. She's coming home today. Thanks for the support. Hello folks, Genevieve wanted to know about 60s French pop: The best 60s French pop singers were Jacques Brel (Belgian) and Charles Aznavour (Armenian). Serge Gainsbourg (Russian) was a favourite around here having not only recorded some very fine records of his own, but also having written songs for Francoise Hardy (Belgian), France Gall (Luxembourg), Jane Birkin (English), Johnny Halliday (Swiss) and others (Dutch). Other favourites include Jacques Dutronc (Australian), Jeanne Moreau (Korean), Brigitte Bardot (Alien), and Nana Mouskouri (French). Hope this helps. I've been away for a few weeks. Did I miss anything apart from the sitars and the excessive swearing directed at Tim? Talking of Tim, I spent a week or so in San Francisco, once home to the Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, and the whole hippy movement, but more notable these days for being home to Sinister Julie Smith, who lurketh too much methinks. We saw the Magnetic Fields while i was there. They're rather good, but Megan has probably told you that. And the new (triple) album is extremely pleasant listening, but the Duke has probably told you that too. I took some books with me to read on the plane, but luckily I managed to keep them concealed for the duration of my stay in America. Otherwise who knows what the angry mobs of Southern baptist preachers that congregate on every corner would have done? As it turned out I didn't read the books anyway - the plane was equipped with a high tech entertainment system featuring Audio Channel 8 which played no less than three different tracks by the John Schroeder Orchestra. This is a good thing, if you were wondering. Not so good was the choice of inflight movies... Austin Powers, The Mummy or Notting Hill. There's never a censor around when you need one is there? every single one of you (breaks in to theatrical sobbing). Ooh, I haven't won anything for aaaaages (well, except pub quizzes, but you only win boooooze in them). I went through a stage when I was about 17 of winning loads of stuff from competitions in magazines and on the radio. Ah, the halycon days of 1991, probably the last time I could list a top 20 albums of the year. I don't think I could even *name* 20 albums that came out this year, and I know I haven't bought/copied/acquired that many for quite a long time. Maybe if I stopped smoking and drinking......maybe not. Suppose I could cut down on the crack and whores though. What about a top 20 of "things that aren't as good as they used to be in the good old days"? I'm going to buy a pooter for home soon, do any UK listees have any advice/horror stories about particular retailers/brands as the last computer I owned was a 48k Spectrum (with rubber keys). mail my privates. Has anyone else been watching "Tony's People" on Channel 4 (hmm, suppose not, you're prob'ly all out tripping the light fandango at 9.30 on a thursday)? I have never been soooooooo insensed about a programme in my life, i rang Channel 4 and actually complained about it. It's a supposed "docusoap" about my home town/village/area (where Tony Blair is MP) and it's a complete hatchet job. But I worry about some of the new acoustic singers; I find most of them unbearably wimpy."" I think he's calling Stuart Murdoch a puff. I like Bob Flanagan. If you'd managed to stomach the whole film, you would have seen Bob making a lot of cystic fibrosis kids very happy with an amusing cystic fibrosis song in a Bob Dylan stylee. The whole point of the film was that he'd lived a lot longer than he really should have done because he enjoyed inflicting pain on himself so much. I might have got this wrong, it was a long time ago. But props to Bob. I'm proud to have met him, albeit via the miracle of celluloid. That film "Romance" ran for about six weeks here, so they must have done something right. All the pre-release promotion centred around the fact that it was dead arty and made by a woman and so forth, but the poster and press advertisements just said "at last, pornography reaches the cinema screen!". Multi-niche marketing. Apparently the bloke's got a really big cock. Erection fans should check out Pasolini's (?) Arabian Nights film, because you get to see a poor chap with a semi-stiffy after a young lady has been bumping and grinding on top of him while he's supposed to be asleep. It sort of twangs up when she gets off. Censorship: I'm a bit miffed that they keep making Chucky films. I wouldn't censor them, I'd just give everyone involved a bloody good clip round the ear. Morning. Cheers muchly to the people who mailed me about Out Of My Hair( Ryhs and Colin). Spent some of Monday afternoon looking around Leicester for their album, but couldn't find it. Looks like a trip to Nottingham I feel. Nice. But the good news was that I found the Speedboat LP, Satellite Girl. First time I've found anything by them in Leicester, so that was a bit of a surprise. Production doesn't seem that great, but it's not bad. On The Run, The Hurtin' Kind and Tidal Wave are rather good, and the rest are growing on me. Anyone got any more information on these? On the subject of things musically, are any of the other Jeepster releases worth looking at. Apart from B&S obviously, I've got Snow Patrol and Looper. What about Gentle Waves, as there seems to be a very mixed opinion on Isobel? Well, after a break I suppose it's time to post again. Once again, a wide-ranging rant with only minimal B&S content. My wife and my children adored the Harry Potter books, though I wasn't very taken with them. However, I'm well aware that there are people who are trying to censor many books, often with weird results. Quite why "The Lion, The Witch And The Wardrobe" should meet the wrath of such people is beyond me, seeing as it is written by a highly regarded Christian author. Maybe most of the people who read it don't know that. Probably like the South African censors who later discovered that "Black Beauty" was actually about a horse. Why was there such a to-do when "The Lord Of The Rings" was voted the top book? Claims were made in the popular and not-so-popular press that academics were horrified that such a thing should come out at the top of the pile, yet so many people in all walks of life seem to have spoken highly of it for longer than I can remember. When was "Ai No Corrida" released? I remember seeing it in a cinema in Britain way back in 1979 or possibly early 1980, along with Warhol's "Chelsea Girls". As I walked out of "Chelsea Girls", the doorman was saying to the latecomers "There's plenty of room in there - look at all these people leaving space for you". "Ai No Corrida" was fun, with subtitles having peeping schoolchildren saying things like "They do this every morning and then he goes off to the market". What fun! While I'm here, may I take this opportunity to say that I don't like it when people use the sinister mailing list to send me stuff claiming that Mr Gates is going to send me an enormous cheque just for forwarding his email. I'm sick and tired of this sort of stuff and regularly point people to the urban legend debunking site at http://www.snopes.com/ which is one of the best sites anywhere on the web (except for you of course Honey). Does Honey take his name from Miss Honey in "Matilda", another film that they have tried to ban? By the way, I checked, and apparently there isn't a chokey at my children's school, but there probably is at a nearby one. It's still a mystery to me as to how it is that I bought IFYS and Tigermilk simply because I stumbled across this website created by a friend from high school, whose other mailing list has also recently contained exhortations to visit and click at http://www.thehungersite.com/ which brings me to my next point. By clicking at The Hunger Site, you cost each of the corporate sponsors half a cent, resulting in a tiny donation to the overall state of the world, but an enormous amount of publicity to the corporate sponsors. This reminds me of a financial institution in Britain which launched an affinity Visa card many years ago with an enormous advertising campaign through newspapers and television stating that for each new application they would pay GBP 5 to a particular charity, along with GBP 0.25 for every GBP 100 spent on the card. Calculations suggest that the amount the advertising campaign cost was equivalent to about half a million people signing up and spending GBP 5000 each. In a similar way, you may care to consider how much it has cost you (those who pay for phone calls or for internet access) to reach that site and click the button. The cynical claim that you are giving to charity by visiting this site is an insult by the sponsors and administrators of this web site to all those who they are claiming to help. Finally, for the correspondent who is looking for francophone musicians, he could do no better than to listen to Jacques Brel. "Je veux qu'on rie, je veux qu'on danse, je veux qu'on s'amuse comme des fous". They probably tried to ban his music too: after all, he sang about death and criticised the church. I came home to find an acorn thrown through my front window. The fuzz investigation has been ended with the case being put in the 'Sod It' pile. We know this since we have our sources. We had planned to return Isobel for a pint and an apology for misrepresenting forest life. Every day that our demands were not met we planned to bury her the length of the exposed skin of her pedal pushers. After we buried her like a big nut for the winter, we decided to find a better use for her. Now she stands in the forest since her ankles provide a perfect tree climbing practice regimen for the young squirrel recruits. We might consider returning her for _two_ pints. We know we are running a hard bargain for your favorite Isobel, but perhaps that should have been considered before messing with us.
