umm..some responses. <Hello everyone I was just wondering if anyone could help me out with a cool pet name. I just bought a gorgeous little Black Moor fish(the ones with bug-eyes) but I'm having trouble coming up with a name. My boyfriend wants to call it "Fluffy" but I think that's a pathetic name.....I wanted to call it "Superfly" but I already have a dog by that name so I guess i'd be overdoing the Curtis Mayfield/blaxploitation etc thing. Hello, everyone! (B&S musical content at the end -- really!) Has anyone else found that the harder something is for you to attain, the more eager you are to have it? That whatever it is you're after becomes even more attractive and more valuable? Case in point, out of the blue recently, I've gone on a quest for a book called The Godwits Fly. Has anyone else out there heard of this book? A bit of history first: back in high school, I used to listen to radio dramas that were broadcast on Sunday nights. One Sunday, the radio drama adaptation of a book from New Zealand was broadcast. It was entitled The Godwits Fly and was about a girl by the name of Eliza who grew up in New Zealand yearning to travel and live in England. From what I recall, godwits are birds in NZ which migrate to England for a while and then return -- any people from NZ out there want to clarify this? -- and people who wanted to 'return' to England were called godwits themselves. I don't recall the rest of the story (silly me), but it was basically a coming of age tale and I thought it was grand at the time (I was also very much into Britpop at the time, so I related a bit to Eliza). The radio adapation was presented in 2 parts, I believe, and I was lucky enough to tape the second part. (Unfortunately, I left the tape back in my home town, which I don't currently live in.) Recently, I've decided to find the book the radio drama was based on, but have had little luck. I did a search for it on Amazon, but to no avail. I've searched in other places (rare book searches) and found that it is out of print. I'm just curious if anybody out there has heard of this. :) It was written all the way back in 1938, I believe, and reprinted in the '70s. (?) It's probably a lovely book and I'll enjoy it immensely when I find it, but till then I will continue my search. Also, if anyone is in a bookstore, try to find this book. I would like to know if it's still available in some places. Oh, and the author's name is Robin Hyde. And here's the B&S content. For all you musically-inclined types, I was wondering if I was the only one who hears a major->minor chord progression in LLPJ. It's at the part of the melody which goes "...time, when you are free from all the trouble you're in..." I'm asking because I always thought it interesting that the chords there were Bbm->Ebm but it SOUNDS like the melody sung is on top of a major->minor chord. But it's not! I don't know if anybody else understands what I'm saying, but I don't care!! :) What I mean by major->minor is something like playing a IV->iv progression, which is a bit of a cliche, really. Pulp seems to like to use this a lot. Anyway, those AREN'T the chords played, but damn! it sure sounds like it. (If you're near a guitar or a piano, play an Fmaj followed by an Fmin to see what I mean.) If you listen very carefully towards the last verse at the part where it goes "...got your name and what you're gonna do about it...", you can hear the piano and it really sounds like a major->minor is played (perhaps as harmony?)... heheh, I hope I got some of you to listen very, very carefully to the song now. :P Hey, this might be an interesting thread to start, having people mention subtle nuances of B&S songs so we can all go on a scavenger hunt! :) For instance, at approximately 1:23 of Ease Your Feet Into The Sea, you can hear someone count in on the left speaker. hello my fellow sinisterines, A while back I made tapes of the NYC shows from Nov of '98 for a whole bunch of you. They were great concerts and I wanted to share them with people on the list who did not get to go see them. It has recently come to my attention that someone has made a CD bootleg from my recording and is selling it at one store in NYC. I have not heard about it being anywhere else yet (have you seen the double CD set?). I am a bit perturbed that someone is trying to make a buck off of something that was given away for free. (in truth I did ask for return postage and blank tapes to make the copies .. I did not want to take a loss on making these tapes just break even) I did not record the shows to make a profit. My offer to make the tapes was a way of giving something back to the list which has given me new friends and lots of enjoyment since I joined. To think that the culprit may be a listee or worse yet a friend who I made tapes for, really bums me out. If you are out there listening, shame on you. What really sucks about this is that I was about to post another offer to make tapes of the Bowlie show. Due to this event I am now not inclined to do so, for fear that the same thing will happen again. Now I realize that I am to blame for this happening. I made the recordings to begin with. I just want you all to know that I did not make these CDs. I am not interested in trying to make a buck off of the band that I love and who has brought me so much pleasure. There's nothing wrong with making a buck. I am just bummed that someone has turned a free offer of something good into a money making scheme. That's not why I made the tapes, that's not why I gave them to people on the list. Dears! I actually have agendas to address this great great afternoon....just getting home from work at PJ's deli on the beach here on this beautiful barrier island has got my lanky fingers itching for some thoughts to translate... I just ran all the way over to the other side of the room and got my copy of LLPJ and am currently finishing it out loudly with a dramatic, wholesome, and ear throbbing design. A design delegated by the spirit. Anyways, yes, yes yes, it is a major/minor progression vocally over the B&S typical root/dominant chord progression. Rightly so, Pulp is the one band that does come to mind that makes use of said procedure diabolically. Of course they have somewhere around 35 instruments, synths, and triangles all doing this progression, so it's a bit more intense, but songs like Underwear and Lipgloss come to mind instantly. Go on, listen to them, with Underwear it's the bit that goes "and close the curtains, cus you're not going anywhere" is a D-->Dm progression, and with Lipgloss it's located at the end of the chorus, "turn him on, there's something wrong, you had it once but now it's gone". That's an F-->Fm kiddies. Go, teach yourself the wonders of P!O!P. It's all educational. Martin then pooted: *Then it got worse and this Prog rock nonsense came on and I started thinking oh my god what did the Who do, and wishing they'd all died before they got old and stuff. Then I found out it was actually Rush. It was an easy mistake to make though.* Ok this really really hurt little ol Blakie. Rush, and The Who?! That's like comparing B&S and Don Henley for God's sake. (no offense to Eagles fans, but hey, I consider them fake, and I don't want hate mail, please) I can't say I appreciated said comment, but upon my frequent reflection on The Who, sometimes I do think they should have stopped before It's Hard, and maybe even Face Dances. Bu...er....what am I saying? I love anything anyone from The Who has ever done and my WHO related cd collection is now over 60 separate cds. Ok I'm obsessed. Cheers to Sister Disco for mentioning my dear friend Rabbit. He never got the credit he deserved for backing up the 'OO in 79, 80 and 81 (and 96/97 for those who, like The Who, are always on top of everything). I'd just like to comment additionally that you lot have been spitting out some adorable posts in the past few days and have all given me a reason to come home quickly and gaze at a pixelated mess, anxious for more. so i was showing my pictures of the bowlie festival to some family members last night and they were all confounded by the one of the queue to pick up the tickets on Friday afternoon. my cousin thought it was a Macedonian border crossing. what with all the haggard people, desolate scenery and general glumness. hoooo, boy. the pet naming thread is right up my alley, folks. i have 2 cats- Simon and Harriet. named after pop stars, but i won't say which ones. i also have a hamster named Faddle, who used to be part of a duo- Fiddle and Faddle, until Fiddle escaped and ran down the furnace pipe. i'd like to believe he's frolicking about in the appalachian mountains right now, so don't ruin it for me, ok? i also used to have hamsters named Mabel, Marvin, Boris and Porl. (the Cure thing was unintentional at first). but i find great joy in naming animals, i think it can be a special thing. all of my pet's names came to me in a relevatory way. i had a dream the other night that my cat Harriet told me her name was Faye in another life. isn't that odd? in true psychoanalyst fashion weejay asked "Anyone else maimed their parents?". No, not me but on one very memorable occasion I got close to causing severe injury in an act of such a foolhardy nature I still shudder to when I think of it. I was young, maybe ...maybe to young and my Parents took myself & my brother for a holiday near a ski resort (which was an odd choice as it was summer at the time). Us youngsters decided that the mountain we were staying by needed climbing, so one summery morning we set off dressed in our matching cardigans in case it got a bit nippy near the summit. There's was no real plan of how we were going to tackle this towering peak so we simply started in the deserted carpark and followed the ski lift upwards. At some stage my parents spotted that we had gone awol and set off to find us. To cut a long story short it got a bit misty, Mum wanted to call out the mountain rescue people and Dad nearly fell down some sort of crevice before we got "rescued" Needless to say we weren't greeted as all conquering mountaineers when we eventually got back to the Hotel. And while I'm totally embarrassing myself, there was once a misguided April fools joke featuring a bar of soap, a toilet brush and several drawing pins but that's probably best left to everyone's imaginations. Time to move on before you all decide that I'm horrid and start hurriedly composing rules to delete my mails on receipt. Ok the only other remotely topical thing I've got to say is that while Dundee might have it's detractors (I haven't been there so it'd be cheeky of me to comment either way) Mick Jagger once called the city of Invercargill, New Zealand the "arsehole of the world". Hmmm , I can't help but think of a quaint old saying that features several items of crockery and the colour black. My apologies to your modems for forcing them to download such drivel.
