I may be stretching my definition of 'pop' slightly here, but I'm sure you'll forgive me just this once. I have been scouring my memory for an instance of bagpipes in reggae, but have come up with none (this certainly doesn't mean there are no reggae bagpipe records). The closest I've come is the bizarre genius reggae/country collaborations of Hawick wild man and sometime window cleaner 'Champion' Doug Veitch and London-based Ariwa Sounds dubmeister The Mad Professor. Listen hard to your copy of The Mad Professor's great 'Dub Me Crazy Pt. 5: Who Knows The Secret of The Master Tapes?' and you'll hear a trademark Doug Veitch Scottish country yodel. And a steel guitar. But no bagpipes. Shame. Oh, there was that Jesse Rae guy who released records on sometime reggae label On-U sound, and who dressed up in a kilt and waved a sword around and insisted that any of his records sold in England should have a sticker on them saying 'Import'. A woman gave me some beer-flavoured cheese for christmas. Grandmother, I call her. It was quite pleasant but, to be honest, the cheese and the beer would have been better separately. I am well capable of mixing cheese and beer myself. In fact, I do little else. There is a fantastic cheese stall in London's oh-so-glamourous Berwick Street where you can find stupefyingly cheap out-of-date cheese which stinks and oozes just like a good cheese should. MMMMMmmmmmmm. I think that's where the Gallagher brothers were headed on the cover of that piss-stinking festering slab of dugong dung LP of theirs. Pair of arses on the cover. You know the one. Of course, there is always the opportunity to start a cheese-related crap B&S pun thread. You know, This Is Just a Modern Roquefort Song, Brie-ing Other People, that sort of thing. Just a thought. If I had a pet, I would name it Mixy. Short for Myxomatosis. Hello everyone I was just wondering if anyone could help me out with a cool pet name. I just bought a gorgeous little Black Moor fish(the ones with bug-eyes) but I'm having trouble coming up with a name. My boyfriend wants to call it "Fluffy" but I think that's a pathetic name.....I wanted to call it "Superfly" but I already have a dog by that name so I guess i'd be overdoing the Curtis Mayfield/blaxploitation etc thing. I feel compelled to turn everything upside down lately. Tim Hopkins told us that we had to wear our badges right side up in the real world, but as we know now, that was the Tim imposter. Next I will turn the Queen Mum upside down and no one will probably realize the difference. Turn Isobel upside down and she might sing better. Or I can turn the Eiffel Tower upside down as I will be in Paris from June 12 to July 25. If any French listees would like to meet, I must warn you all that my mother is stocking me with cranberry jam to give as gifts. I will be very quiet and polite as I can not speak French very well. Hello! I'm after some advice from the literary crowd out there. I've been asked to do a reading at a friends wedding, and I was hoping somebody out there in sinisterland had any suggestions as I know more about pottery than poetry. I'd like something a bit different to the regular wedding poems, but still suitable. Oh, and short-ish as I'll be crapping my pants and I don't want to be there long. If you could mail me directly and type out the poem I would be eternally grateful. If not, an idea of where I could find it. I believe Mr. Stevie Trousers may be able to help me here??? Where's that parrot buggered off to now anyway? They're never there when you need them. Whilst I'm here....Molly recommended Tom Robbins' "Another Roadside Attraction". I definitely second this, but my favourite by him is "Still Life With Woodpecker". It celebrates smokers and red-heads and I'm both. All his books are great except "Half asleep in frog pajamas", which I think is pap. And "Skinny legs and all" as I've never read it, so I don't know. Arf, I read in some finnish musicmagazines that "The Helsinki-sound" is a hot thing at the moment in London. Well, I quess some of you know Pepe Deluxe and Jori Hulkkonen (who, you ask) or Jimi Tenor, but a "scene"...? Give me a break. This town is a small village with 600 000 inhabitants, and thats it. There's about 10 people who make this kind of music, and if they can create something like "the big next thing", well then hats off to you, guys. Well, what do I know, I don't care for that dancystuff anyway. But that Pepe Deluxe song that they've been palying here, that's pretty funky. Beats the crap out of everything that fucking Norman Cook does. Yes, I don't like him. Europop with heavy sounds, that man composes. That's it, gotta go now, these fuckers here want to record the phonecalls I'm doing here, so I have to start working now. Fun to work in the telemarketingbusiness, it is. I kid you not, this is like some fucking KGB here. They want to know what I'm doing wrong in my job, since this one project in here isn't going anywhere and I can't make any businesscontacts to this crappy japanese company. greetings! 'tis late --1:50am, to be precise. and i've just had many cups of coffee at the diner... where to begin?? i left school last monday, and finally today (when i arrived home) i had to delete all 330 sinister messages without reading them, mostly. of course, i had to see what all that iain business was about. but after a few posts, and honey's infinitely wise administration skills displayed, i said fuck all to it and just deleted everything. i tried to scan my 330 messages at first. that lasted to about, oh, 45. anyway.... so i've been all around ohio and pittsburgh for the last week. while in columbus, ohio, i was in a record shop called Magnolias (which is shite for used cds but good for new rarer things), i found the Gentle Waves, but no way was i paying $18 for it. also found 2 b&s bootlegs. one looked suspiciously like the blacksessions (which i have very good quality on tape thanks to fred via kimmy), and hte other had only 5 tracks. and both cds were something like $30. obscene! however.... at Used Kids (easily the coolest plac ein columbus, possibly in ohio, even the whole US -- no! no! must remain loyal to newyork!! anyway...) yes, at Used Kids, i did pick up lovely things like Braid, June of 44, Ida, and Jejune... well, my sinister darlings -- i feel like i'm posting blindly, as i did not read all yr posts (did i mention that i had 330???). but the last time i was off for so long (over winter break in january) i missed the underwear thread. at least i didn't miss anything so smutty as that. here, how's this for pathetic? yesterday, after dropping miss kimmy off at work, i needed to waste 5 hours in the suburbs of pittsburgh. the andy warhol museum (like all museums) being closed on mondays, and the rain falling as it was, i ended up at the Pleasant Hills public library, finishing "Rotten" and rereading half of "The Handmaid's Tale." oh -- and the secret ingredient in Dr. P. IS plum -- i don't know if we established that. and had i more patience, i would have more carefully perused the posts to see where this whole gay thread came from -- but it ought to be carried on! um, p!r!i!d!e and all that.... Hello dahlings and dears, This is Miss Courtney B of Olympia WA. It has been hard holding my tongue for the past few weeks. There was so much trivia and such I wanted to share with you. Did you know Dr. Pepper was first marketed as the soda you drink hot? But about me. I'm a student at the Evergreen State College and want to be a librarian when I'm finished with school. I kiss girls and boys. When I was doing a series of drawings based on the Great Gatsby for class this quarter I got stoned and listened to Belle and Sebastian every night. Oh, and I have a tatoo over my heart of the strawberry from Beat Happening's Jamboree album. I used to ride my bike everywhere but a few nights ago I was speeding down State Ave. with a few friends and one girl flipped over her handlebars and smacked her head on the pavement. It was not a pretty sight but she is out of the hospital and currently at home with ice packs on her face until the swelling goes down. My most recent adventure was mud wrestling last weekend. I have photos to prove it.
