as to Chris's message, i hope you didn't take imy post as sort of.......oh let's rally round the gay flag gayboys. i dont' know it was just a bit of a jest. i tend to agree with what you said about 'community' and so forth. i'm not generally a flag waving go-getter, and though i'm in a poor part of the country for seeing firsthand (!) alot of the emphasis i see in the media, so forth seems pretty disingenuous to me. and sort of stereotypical. i mean how many jokes do we have to hear about melissa etheridge? hehe. and the whole s/m thing but that's like a WAYYY nother story. anyway i just wanted to say i wasn't trying to categorize people or anythign, i just thought it was very nice that people were being natural about it. i like that, it says something about the open arms of Sinisterland, we shoul all feel at ease about being ourselves, whether we fancy stuart, sarah, or the dog on wheels maybe...... regardless, i'd like to give more PROPS to alyssa for her 'first real post' and look forward to many more. we can up the level of clannishness and cliques, and announce the formation of the Tweedykes foundation. HAHA you're not allowed!!! boooooooo hiss hiss paperwadinthe-eyeyousilly bugger!!!! you have a big nose and we dont' like you. (i'm kidding) as to the other thing//// I like all the newcomers. let me say that right now. i know i've only been on the list since october, so i'm probably a newcomer to some of the list, but the recent posts have been very nice for me, we just had some nice discussions going, and yes i think it's a bit elitist to keep saying "now the list is bollocks and horribly boring" that does cut out a lot of people and seems mean spirited, whether it was intentional or not. but naturally, let me be saccharine and say *hugs* to honey our long suffering mother. i appreciate her gentle guidance and whacks now and then, cos i deserve it. i'm a bit of a masochist. but nonetheless..... it DOES take strength to be gentle and kind, especially in the barrage of such madness......this ship of fools....... anyone catch jarvis the other night? disappointing dearth of his suggestions, but it was all WORTH IT baby just to see his impression of a Jerry Springer audience member. (Jer-ry! jer-ry!*clapping hands idiotically*) oh lordy. that was the best. btw i didn't know you brits had jerry springer yet. gawd i'm sorry about that.....i knew you had ricki, but....... i must admit i watch the show sometimes. yeah forget it i love it. them's my kinda people, thems the salt o'the earth. they're MY people, from MY land, the sort of staunch stock amongst which i was raised. yeah, so anyone who wants to withdraw their friendship with me, can do so now. i heartily encourage you to use caution. J@n says ... I'd like to be a goth myself, I would, there's only one tiny problem, and that's the music. I can't stand it, not even in an effort to get to know one of those heavenly goth creatures. But listening to boring synthie-pop with monotonous singing about death and devils... Way back when i was just a senior in high school there was a totally awesome radio show on called the nighttime experiment, or something like that. he played all goth and bizarro noise music and the Birthday party and stuff like Love Spirals downward, Nurse with Wound, Death in June, Current 96 and His Name is Alive. i must admit when i'm feeling in the right mood, that kinda stuff really gets my blood going. though i'm far from being an expert in that area, as the radio show was cancelled much to my chagrin, and i still have the sneaking suspicion that Death in June and Current 96 are either nazis, satan worshipers or something similar. can anyone prove or disprove this for me?? it used to give me terrible worries because i found myself enjoying quite a few of their songs, and still have a couple i recorded off the radio. (hopelessly offtopic but book-related) All this reminds me on the subject of the lovely Love Spirals Downwards (yes it's up-yer-arse music but it's damn PURTY!!), and the book club idea. i listened continuously to my LSD CD whilst i was reading the book "the Wild Road" by Gabriel king. a very twee fantasy book about cats, but it has some violence and pretty disturbing scenes in it. it also has a fox! yay!! it's perfect escapism. for tweebastards like myself, cos i still like reading books where the main characters are kittycats or unicorns or something. maybe there are a few others out there who are still stuck in 7th grade..... now that ive gotten way off the mark i'd like to say in closing, if everyone listend to the gentle waves record CONSTANTLY, maybe it would be a much less angst-ful place!! come on everyone. Dear "none-more-fervent, website-powered super-fans" (copyright the contents page of *that* Select), As someone who doesn't post very often, it may seem a bit rich that I found the *whisper it* SOS chaos a bit upsetting. The reason being that the apprehension, which I suspect other people also feel (especially after the shyness discussion), of being harshly judged if I posted, seemed for a moment to be confirmed. But then Nick Da Star and Ailsa Rah!Rah! Ross (and everyone else whose input was appreciated but whose names don't lend themselves so immediately to distortion for glorification purposes) stepped in, and that's why I've got my sinister@Majordomo-typing fingers out again. Since I've been on the list, the notion of people who are "friends you just haven't met yet" has acquired meaning, and I don't care how vomit-inducingly sappy that sounds, it's how I feel. While I was wearing my none-more-fervent super-fan head yesterday, the thought occurred to me that Sinister bears a huge resemblance to the way in which Stu D and Karn met: An endless stream of long letters/ emails "about them(/our)selves, and about the world" being exchanged in both cases before people actually meet. I think we should all get our none-more-fervent super-fan heads on more often. Look what popped out of Honey's when he was wearing his - an entire mailing list which is so mouthwateringly desirable, a whole rabble of us wearing our own n-m-f s-f heads swarmed to it like bees to honey. Sinister: Elvis Impersonators, Nuns and Bibi Netanyahu... (or "I'm in Jimmy's Gang!")

Hey pop-kids... Straying away from the central topics of the day (mainly the alleged existence of some sort of Sinister (that's sinister with a large "S"; I'm staying out of this argument) higher power), I find myself reading that Marianne is planning to take advantage of a cheap-flights- to-Glasgow offer. Innocuous though this may seem, I beleive that I must point out (in a cautionary tone) that this arrangement will undoubtedly involve Glasgow Prestwick airport; which is more than likely some sort of trans-dimensional wormhole to a much more surreal world than our own. Having worked in the cafe of this once great international stopping point I have witnessed the full horrors contained therein, which I have attmepted to catalogue: 1) Prestwick airport is the site of Elvis Presley's only visit to the United Kingdom. Hence, during the summer months it becomes a mecca for Elvis impersonators, who arrive in their bus-loads. Its fairly disconcerting selling chip butties to 50 year old businessmen in rhinestone jumpsuits. 2) For those of you of an ecumenical bent, Prestwick airport offers cheap flights to Lourdes. These were originally operated by Sabre Airways, a Romanian company who utilised decommissioned military aircraft. 3) Prestwick Airport is a frequent stopover for members of the Israeli airforce, and on at least one occaision, Benjamin Netanyahu, who was in the U.K. in his official capacity as a bumbling oaf bent on causing full scale war in the West Bank. A member of the catering staff who will remain nameless came within seconds of serving him a bacon sandwich. 4) The head barman is best friends with The Krankies (N.B.: The Krankies- Truly terrifying Scottish children's entertainers. Involves a middle-aged woman dressed as a schoolboy. Nearly as scary as the Singing Kettle.), who often nip in to visit, being as they are based in nearby Ayr. 5) The manager of the catering division (who bears a striking resemblance to the late Larry "Shut that door!" Grayson) was threatened with court action by a choking customer who he accused of having "a very narrow throat". 6) The Airport Security was once told off by the police for calling out the bomb squad on two occaisions in a week to "De-fuse" suspect packages which respectively turned out to be a sleeping tramp and a briefcase full of Dutch porno, including a nice line in corprophilia. 7) Prestwick airport is surely the only place in the world where a member of staff has been run over by a light aircraft. He probably shouldn't have been carrying a tray of sandwiches and a bucket of ice-cubes down the secondary runway. Disturbingly enough, there is a slight twang of B&S relevance in this note, in that I first heard the band when a very cute baggage handler (Prestwick's baggage handlers used to have to be able to sing, dance or play a musical instrument, in order to entertain weary travellers as they went through the routine asscoiated with international air travel. For the record the aforementioned girl played the clarinet and was a ballet dancer) put Tigermilk on the stereo in the dishwashing room. Ever since then I've associated B&S with the hiss of steam and the clatter of cutlery. (I didn't mention the odour of stale food, cos that's not a very favourable comparison.) crikey -- in the space of a week, the jeepster b&s list shuts (after just over 200 posts -- an archive *could* be made available if you're suffering from insomnia, or lack of spam), a newsgroup mysteriously appears, and the fourteen "sinister" lists that honey was running all find out that he's two-timing them. still, it's all about the music, eh, chums? To whoever it was who was worried about being shy around girls: The answer is to drink beer, and plenty of it. There's nothing the chicks dig more than someone who staggers across to them, drools in their ear, mutters incoherently in their ear and stares down their cleavage. If you have a fish supper in your hand, it works even better. Try it next time you're at the bus stop -- Works for me! heard a good joke about the pope dying and going to heaven. Greetings Happy Citizens of Sinisterland, It's Sunday night (in the UK @ least) and I've figured it's probably about time for me to try sending message to you all. Yep I'm another newbie breaking the ice so sorry if this isn't the most exciting mail ever composed - broadcasting to 1100 people is kinda nerve-wracking. Anyway I guess I should quickly explain how I happened to end up here. To be honest it's all down to Select magazine, I used to be a regular reader but got a little disenchanted when the mag seemed to become the unofficial fanzine for the Oasis & Verve fanclubs, both of which never really did anything for me so I stopped buying it. Then one day I was in my friendly neighbourhood Virgin Megastore and noticed "Belle and Sebastian" scrawled over the cover... and the rest just happened. I've been into B&S ever since I heard a few songs played on Marks & Lard's now sadly defunct evening show and they were a revelation compared to most over musicI was listening to at that time. Judging from a few mails that I've seen the Mark & Lard link is a common one, I think they should both be made honoury Sinisterites in recognition of their services to B&S-ness. So here I am on Sunday night........ there's always been something slightly strange about the weekend ending. I can always remember that as a child the game playing/bike riding etc always took on an extra sense of urgency just before tea time on a Sunday, possibly because we knew that once we went inside and had tea the weekend was officially over and all we had to look forward to is school the following day. I don't think it's quite as obvious now that I'm working as the demarcation between weekday=work and weekend=play isn't quite so strong. Hmmmmm I hope people know what I'm talking about, I sometimes don't words things very elegantly. Ok time to go, thanks for reading and apologies is any of the above has left you scratching your heads and wondering "what in the name of Jimminy Cricket is he on about". Cheers for letting me join the family and congratulations on being clever, funny, serious and interesting all at the same time.I've only been here a month or so but have loved every minute. I can't promise and startling B&S news or opinions as much of what I'd want to say has probably already been talked about squillions of times but if I ever see Stuart M & Isobel C changing a flat tire on a large truck marked "Advance copies of Tigermilk and other everso secret B&S stuff" on a sliproad off the M40 you all will be the first to hear about it !. <aah, I have to agree. I love all this black and the velvet and the make-up... I'd like to be a goth myself, I would, there's only one tiny problem, and that's the music. I can't stand it, not even in an effort to get to know one of those heavenly goth creatures. But listening to boring synthie-pop with monotonous singing about death and devils... what's more, I went to a Nick Cave concert once (he seems to be the only artist who's somewhat goth and still very very good, or maybe his talent is only proof that he isn't goth ;), and all those goth people were happily chatting with each other and even occasionally LAUGHING! can you imagine that? They're not even taking their own underground culture seriously! Who else could fulfill the noble task of melancholy, if not them? I was disappointed. > um. something about this im going to say now. goths, most of the time, are very overrated...and most of the other time, underrated. and some people would like to think "oh, theyre satanic"...."theyre losers" but the fact is that a lot of goths are very very smart...its just that they like to look a certain way and listen to a certain kind of music... i dunno. i tend to always defend goths. maybe because i relate to them the most. or whatever. but the people who give goths a bad name is those to "pretend" to be gothic, and make fools out of themselves acting in strange uncertain ways. yawn. next subject. someone, i don't remember who, was looking for some book recommendations. this is what i have. if youre looking for a mystery kind of book try Nevermore by William Hjotsberg or And the Sea Will Tell (true story) by Vincent Bugliosi. if youre looking for a self destructive book try Jernigan by David Gates. if youre looking for a passionate...uh.. a story of love and friendship, try Eden Close by Anita Shreve or The Arrowing of the Cane by John Conyngham. yeah. that's all. and im reading a story now of loss and mourning..(from what i have read so far) called The God of Small Things by Arundhati Roy. and im enjoying it very much. reading that novel is like a twisted form of meditation. dont ask. its perfect in my head. one more thing. that thing about being shy. im very very very shy as well. not on the pooter as much, but in real life, in front of people i dont know (unless im intoxicated). yeah. and because im shy, i say certain things at random and...whatever. but if youre looking to impress a shy girl (which you shouldnt do, just be yourself), people who are relatively shy don't really go with the mainstream (in my opinion, if you disagree, dont damn me), so do something creative to get their attention or something. i tend to worship from afar. and i think i always will. thats all. advice from someone with no experience. wonderful, eh? faeriebelle +----------------------------------------------------------------------+ +---+ Brought to you by the reborn Sinister mailing list +---+ To send to the list mail "sinister(a)majordomo.net".
