Sinister: rework love and have dog on wheels...

Hello to you reading this, This point may have been made in the past but I have not the time nor patience to find out. The point being, aside from comparisons with The Smiths and Nick Drake, does the B&S track Dog on Wheels (and the entire e.p, in terms of general sound, for that matter)not remind all of the Love tracks 'A house is not a motel'(in terms of bass riff) as well as 'Alone again or'(in terms of trumpet). This comparison of course is not something to be scoffed at with Arthur Lee considered one of the greatest Lyricists and the Love album 'Forever changes' one of the all time greatest albums!! I realise this points to my ignorance in having only listened to the e.p for the first time today. However, consider for a moment that this e.p will one day be retro and if I am listening to retro sounds in the modern day I am in fact a futurist and ahead of my time... Think about it... dear everyone on this biscuit nibbling, cardie wearing list... philippe is very sweet...trust me, he made me smile when i thought that i would never smile again...and i do not like that this has been brought about to the list because it seems more like tattling than a plea for philippe to read or for someone else to make an offer for those sessions on tape...a better way of going about writing to the list about this would have been: a) making sure that the letter had not been so long... b) making sure that it was not so overdramatic... it seems too based on getting everyone else's sympathy and that makes me sad...this is the sinister mailing list...home of jelly-filled happy tummies and kittens playing in giant piles of leaves... shy hugs... meganelise (whom is already feeling bad about this response but feels the need to say something as she cares very much about philippe and wants everyone to know that he is NOT a bad person in even the slightest of ways...i'm sorry...) I don't know if I should be writing this sort of stuff to the list, but I just don't know who else to turn to. I love being on this list a lot, and implicitly trust the people on it. When I went to London, so many fantastic, beautiful people pitched in, telling me the best places to shop and offering to meet me and all that. So I presumed that everyone on this list would be like that. And at the beginning, Philippe seemed like that too. When I first joined the list, I remember that Philippe was the one who so generously taped the Black Sessions and distributed it to a person in each continent so that they could dub for other listees in that particular continent. Which I thought was a particularly nice thing to do. So I really don't know what to make of him and the situation now. In the past few months I have written more than six emails to him, all unanswered, and yet he still finds time to write to the list. So to me it seems like he is ignoring me. Now, I will be forever deprived of a copy of the B&S Black Sessions (yes this was around the time of all the talk of their Black Sessions, that's how long ago it all was), as well as the Tindersticks, Divine Comedy and Nick Cave black sessions too. Oh woe is me! I missed out on so many trades, in the mistaken and misguided belief that Philippe would honour our agreement. My first instinct is always to be kind and generous and give people the benefit of the doubt but there is always a limit. I have conducted so many successful trades already so I had no reason to not trust Philippe. Philippe, if you're out there, I still believe in the goodness of mankind and in particular, of this special list full of very special people. Sinisterines For once (and hopefully this will be the final time) this posting is not as light-hearted and frothy as most of my previous postings. Chris McQuain, who has pleasantly complimented my on my filmic taste, whereas my film buff friends consider me a rank amateur, wistfully complained: >>>>>I previously asked Mr. Lucey to let me know where, oh where may I obtain Michel Legrand's pop recordings? CD titles, please? I shall weep into my pillow until he delivers. Legrand's music for Godard's My Life to Live is in my top 5 film scores ever. I read the brilliant comments of sinistereens in digest form, and too quickly, apparently, since I missed that request when it first came along.... OK, I know him mainly as a film composer so soundtracks are in fact a great place to hear his stuff, like in the inimitable "Umbrellas of Cherbourg" or "Young Girls of Rochefort". He also did the music for the cool film--or should I say the film about coolness-- "the thomas Crowne affair" in which faye dunaway is, well, cool, and which includes the classic "the windmills of your mind". Some of his other great songs are from films i've never seen. "What are you doing the rest of your life?" is apparently from something called "The Happy Ending". "Little Boy Lost" -- a b&s kind of song if there ever was one, and one i've loved dearly since childhood-- is from a film called "Pieces of Dreams" that i've never seen. Flash: my boyfriend, looking over my shoulder as I type, says "you want Michel Legrand, I'll give you Michel Legrand," and pops "the best of scott walker" on the record player. Walker does a killer version of "I will wait for you." Go get it. Other cool versions of songs: there's a jazz singer named earl coleman who does a sultry version of "what are you doing". I have it on a compilation some one gave me, so don't know where it's from. Tony Bennett and Bill Evans did two albums together (yes, it's true) and on the second one, called "together again", they do a version of "you must believe in spring." Some people think the Bennett/Evans albums sound ugly, but that song at least is cool. Abbey Lincoln does that song too somewhere. Legrand himself is (was?) a pretty happening jazz pianist himself. Evidence being a record I found a couple months ago called "Michel Legrand with Ray Brown and Shelly Manne at Shelly's Manne-Hole." (I kid you not.) It's on Verve and it's fun. Don't know if it's been reissued on cd. He does a version of his "Watch What Happens" --Betty Carter does a cool version of that one somewhere too. He also does a cool version of the Johnny "Shadow of Your Smile" Mandel song, "A Time for Love.'" I kind of think of Johnny Mandel and Michel Legrand as peas in a pod sometimes. Anyway, gone on long enough. Sinister: stars of track and field..

Well >this may be a case of over-contemplation, but I just wondered if any of you >out there have ever thought the same thing, well at least similar things. exactly. i couldn't have put it better myself. music is something to lose yourself in, and i that's why it's so universally popular. but that's also why i sometimes cannot understand why bands like 5ive and backstreet boys become so popular, because there is essentially nothing there to lose yourself in. but then i remind myself of the time when i myself was a hormone-fuelled, take that obsessed ten year old [yes, ten year old]..and it wasn't so much about the music. yeh, sure, that was an element, but the reason i was so obsessive about them was because of their whole image. i listen back on their music now and think 'what could i have ever found there that was of any substance?'..but you have to remember i was tne..and hormones are cruel and evil things. i do often wonder why i spend so much of my time listening to music. some people around me can't understand it, but i can't understand how they could *not* completely surround themselves with it. i never get any revision/essays done because there's always some cd in the background which manages to eventually distract me totally from what i was doing. i have to have music on when i'm falling asleep [but maybe that's just me being a wimp]..i have to listen to it in the car, any long journeys, in the common room, before exams..or just lying on my bed, forgetting about everything and immersing myself in the track. music's a sociable interest in some ways [in that you're brought together with other people at gigs/festivals etc and it's a way to meet new people with similar interests], but at the same time it's so completely antisocial. i think that belle & sebastian are one of the best bands to completely immerse yourself in......however, i would say that the absolute best band i have found for doing this is radiohead. ok, ok, so that's typical coming from me..but think about it for a bit. you know i'm right. you just know it. i have a billion things more to say on this topic, but i don't want to bore any of you anymore than i already have.. i think i've been out in the sun too long....... *bug* ___________________________________________ ***the tiny zine on the net*** http://ds.dial.pipex.com/sage/tartrazine ***and the best band in oxford*** http://ds.dial.pipex.com/sage/moonkat +----------------------------------------------------------------------+ +---+ Brought to you by the reborn Sinister mailing list +---+ To send to the list mail "sinister(a)majordomo.net". Which of course stands for "Stay On Subject!" :) Evening all, Apologies in advance to the tender toes with their pink glittery varnish of the Mother Superior but I'm going to jump all over them anyway. Those of you not subscribed to the (recently discovered to be actually UNdead) Jeepster list will be ignorant of the fact that some people there are discussing setting up a mailing list on which to share their thoughts & feeling regarding Belle and Sebastian. This because some of them have formed the opinion that the Sinister list that they had been lead to believe fulfilled that necessary function was in fact about the Simpsons. As I have stated before, I dislike the idea of faction, rivalry, schism & division (& tautology!) amongst the B&S fanbase. So could we please listen to Mummy & get back to all that FAQ-type thinking of Sir Cliff, etc. business? Please? You can chastise me now, Honey, for breaching the roolz. Sinister: oven gloves mostly

Yo dudes! I've been home for a few days and came back to a torrent of e-mails, so some of this might be a bit out of date. I landed, bouncing, in the warm bosom of my family looking forward to three days of exotic and tasty food, to make a change from the beans and chicken I've been living on recently, to find that our larder was ~full to the brim~ with eight mouldy carrots and an onion. I found some peas in the freezer and boiled them up (this is getting very boring isn't it) then I set fire to the oven gloves (ooh! excitement!) by leaving them on the hob. So instead of going out and having a crazy time I had to stay in and apologise to my mum. Sorry, I'm being irrelevant. I was wondering this morning on the train whether Belle and Sebastian have become an obsession. I was wondering this because at a fabulous party on Sunday I accidentally referred to Arantxa as Sebastian. Oh dear, I suppose it is then, but a worthy obsession I think. Thanks to the people who said good things about my little story. It's reminded me that I'm supposed to be writing a bestselling novel instead of just talking about it and writing stories that aren't even long enough to send to the midnight lending library. I was going to say more but I've just realised that the library's probably shut now and I've wasted another seven pence on an overdude book. I'd better go and see.
