Hello again (I've missed you all), The other day there was a nasty storm in Ohio and whilst chatting with my chums on #sinister a lightning bolt struck rather close and fried my modem. Fortunately, I had a back up. Unfortunately, I'd managed to misplace my driver disk and my system disk, so I had to wait until today to install it. So basically I had to wait three days to get back on the Internet. Well without access or friends for that matter (they all seemed to leave town this weekend for some reason) and blowing my chance to go to ann arbor with this incredibly cute girl from Denver thanks to a prior commitment, I was searching for ways to waste time. I tried watching Return of the Jedi, but it is still my least favorite Star Wars film (including the Phantom Menace), and it didn't really work. I of course listened to music, but it has been so dreadfully muggy lately that it really sucked all of the fun out of music for me. Then it came to me. why not read a book? I had read books before and enjoyed them and I had just finished reading the brilliant Continental Drift by Russell Banks. So I picked up another book, this time Veronica by Nicholas Christopher and realized just how liberating reading could be. Now I don't feel so dumb for getting that degree in English. One last note on this reading thing. I just started reading Almanac of the Dead by Leslie Marmon Silko. I'm trying to figure out how long it is going to take me to read a 750 page book (and how long did it take her to write it?) Finally a last note on the Simpsons. I think the reason it is easier to watch a Simpsons episode that was made past season 2 is that sometime during season 2 the writers decided to deviate from matt Groening's "Life in Hell" format of the original Simpsons from the Tracy Ullman Show and instead decided to use the Simpsons as a forum for social critique. I think the most endearing quality of the Simpsons is that the Simpsons are probably the most effective form of satire on US television. It's really no secret that the Simpson's writers are aligned with the American left politically (and radically so I would say in some cases) but because it is a cartoon, no one views the show as threatening. I think this is best illustrated by the recent Easter Sunday episode of the Simpsons, which was so obviously critical of Christians, and yet really had no protest from the right wing or Christian Coalition at all. However, to the intelligent viewer, the simpsons is a serious satire of American life, and pretty much a good diagnosis of what is wrong with it. You can do these things with a smile you know. Well sorry to have wasted all of your time. Digest wise this should read: Check out Russell Banks and Nicholas Christopher Simpsons #1 because of SATIRE. Nothing about Brandt's crush. As are the Auteurs (new single out now, called "The Rubettes" apparently after a 1970s bubblegum-glam group, yet to arrive in Oregon, whinge). As is Mr. Luke Haines, for those who don't know the mastermind behind all aforementioned projects, a man whom I would like to nominate to the Morrissey/Cocker/Murdoch level of songwriting genius (there's a second tier with the love triangle of Albarn/Frischmann/Anderson, also rather impressive, Albarn less so than the other two)- he [Haines] is alarmingly clever, artistic, passionate, and creative. Best lyrics off the heart-pulverizing BBR record "England Made Me", from the tune "Swinging": "Are you a hardcore hooligan? Did you really burn the old school down?/If I set fire to you now, would you even make a sound?" *sigh* perfection! :) And a voice like a cold, cold Mary Poppins wrapping itself around those dire and sarcastic Haines bons mots....!!! FYI, Black Box Recorder are now fortuitously signed to the suave and elegant indie label nude records, who really know how to push a band (Suede, of course, and Ultrasound is rather omnipresent now as well, as I'm sure all you UK inkyweekly readers know. I quite like Ultrasound) so good for them. and speaking of the nude records stable of talent, a late R.I.P. for Sharkboy. Sorry for no B&S content but you can bet your bippie I'll be posting within hours of the upcoming Looper show. You know how Homer Simpson, mouth agape, drools in anticipation of donuts and beer? Dearest Friends, I too attended the DC picnic on Saturday. The drive down from Philly was pleasant, and I almost drove on to Richmond to visit a pen pal but decided showing up unnanounced was a bad idea. We stayed at Christa's house and talked until the wee hours of the night. > hmm i didn't notice any internet turned real snogs? I kissed someone I met at the picnic. I just can't help it. Sunday I ventured out to a supposed to be indie/mod night at a club in Philly. Poo. Too much mod and not enuf indie in my book...four Smiths songs? I may have been more forgiving if I hadn't been to a Smiths party recently. They did play B&S and it was the only song that had the whole bar dancing. Hint to the dj's-play more music that gets the bar dancing! Also everyone seemed to know each other so I was alternatly in a state of alienation, and claustrophobia when the first girl I talked to turned out to be Trisha, a member of this very list. I'm in desperate need of mix tape trading from people on this list. So here is the deal: you make me a mix tape and send it to me, and I will return a mix tape (although they probably won't all be different) but I promise to include one song in particular. In the interests of pleasing all pop folks, Amelia and Pete from Heavenly singing the Spice Girl's song Wanna Be with Calvin Johnson of Beat Happening/Halo Benders/Dub Narcotic Sound System/Go Team/K records fame...it is really a gem to be heard, funny as heck...and as far as I know I'm the only one who taped it that day. >i'd like to make a list of all the folks on the >list who are actually in bands, work at indie clubs, >dj at certain clubs, whatever - music makers either >with instruments or making the show happen I'm a promoter and fanzine editor, that should could for something...and a groupie too. I got ya back Mark!:) I've got piles of Simpsons tapes that never fail to amuse. Although I honestly enjoy watching the syndicated re-runs more than watching my own tapes. You know, it almost feels "live" in a way (some station putting in the tape and playing it and then broadcasting it), so there's no rewind. Making it all the sweeter/more irritating when you can predict characters' lines or other jokes. As for Mr. Powell's assertion that the last B&S ep was their best yet, I say: "Worse ep ever!" at last, i have got through the thousands of Sinister messages left unread from when i was in hospital. "in hospital?" you say, with a kindly concerned expression... yes, i was having my insides removed before they exploded, my appendix to be precise. but i'm sure none of you want to hear about that, or the green vomit, so i'll be discreet. the very day of my release from the aforementioned pit of sickness, we rescued a rat from the pond, where it had somewhat foolishly taken shelter from the attentions of cat and dog. feeling responsible for anything that our domestic animals hurt, we put the rat in a cage inside and fed it strawberries while it convalesced. now, however, we have decided to keep it as it is only young and would probably not survive if we let it go again. so now the rat is my responsibility, in my bedroom, going under the name of Mehmet, after the German footballer Mehmet Scholl. not, you understand, inferring that there is anything rat-like about Mehmet Scholl, i can't remember anything about him at all apart from his name. alyssa marie said something melancholy about her birthday. if i knew her address i'd send her lollipops to cheer her up, but i don't, so just happy birthday anyway. b&s daytime radio one coverage!!i don't know if anybody has mentioned this yet because i'm on the digest, but Mark Radcliffe played "she's losing it" today on his radio show, and Jo Whiley has a copy of Tigermilk (the cd, don't get *too* excited) up for grabs if you can beat longstanding champion Rae on the popquiz "sussed or bust" tomorrow lunchtime. i would do it, but i'm keeping a low profile. can't think of anything else to say. any dullness in this message is due to me being in pain, if you were wondering. love, abi (who still doesn't like rabbits) +----------------------------------------------------------------------+ +---+ Brought to you by the reborn Sinister mailing list +---+ To send to the list mail "sinister(a)majordomo.net". Hello Lovelies, I think the first year of The Simpsons is eminently watchable, but I have to say that I think it's gotten better over the years for the simple fact that, as time has progressed, we've come to know virtually every citizen of Springfield, dozens of characters with all their hilarious idiosyncrasies. Also, the in-jokes have risen exponentially, such as all the times they tease us by ALMOST showing/telling us exactly where Springfield is, etc. I would put any Simpsons episode ahead of anything else I've ever seen on television in terms of quality and laffs. Also, somebody mentioned Michel Legrand earlier; I love his film stuff (he scored Godard's "My Life to Live" and "A Woman is a Woman", as well as "Umbrellas of Cherbourg") but I was unaware he had pop recordings. Could said Sinsterine be so kind as to gratify me by compiling a makeshift discography of Legrand recordings available on CD? It would be much appreciated! Does anybody on the list heart Black Box Recorder? People keep talking about Upstairs at the Garage, and I read somewhere that BBR has a standing gig there that's always sold out. Their album is coming out in the US and will contain every b-side as bonus tracks, FYI. Sinister: my first post/no interesting content whatsoever

hello list. i would just like to say that there *was* go karting at bowlie. i did race. i did come in last but avoided being overtaken. just . i did shoot a rifle. it was the weirdest most non-belle & sebastian experience ever and i felt very strange afterwards. guns bad. pam berry is lovely. so is mike. despite not actually buying that last b&s e.p. i think i like it the most. or i think i do. i suppose i should buy it. it takes soooo long to get to rough trade now because i ride the bus only. i can't afford the tube any more! i must love my job if i'm paid so little but still happy. with the job at least. can someone make karaoke versions of all belle & sebasian songs? some enterprising person with a super8/video camera. the concept is just so great. or at least storyboard them all. i've enjoyed the sarah cracknell content of the list. and the emo/hardcore/whatever content. i went to see unwound last night but didn't see any b&s badges. what's up with that? wear them for 400 years/most secret method next week will you... bye! mark p.s. someone said something about not being able to watch reruns of simpsons episodes. that's not true (with the exception of maybe the first season or so). the rest are infinitely watchable. back me up xavier! p.p.s. i'm halfway through the new la buena vida lp now and it is really really great. +----------------------------------------------------------------------+ +---+ Brought to you by the reborn Sinister mailing list +---+ To send to the list mail "sinister(a)majordomo.net".
