the train of thought now at platform 3 is the delayed sinister express from archel. anyone not intending to travel on this service should leave now. i had a mystery boy once. except he wasn't really that much of a mystery, because i knew his name and was on speaking terms with him. i also knew he wrote very good poetry and liked belle and sebastian, which was enough information to allow me to dreamily fantasise about the great conversations we could have if i ever managed to get beyond the 'hello' stage. (although much can be communicated in a 'hello'. not in this case however.) i eventually asked him if i could tape tigermilk off him sometime, which could have been the start of something beautiful, but then i didn't see him for a while and when i did i already had a copy from another source. i still think he is lovely, and as my boyfriend only tolerates b&s (though he does own TBWTAS), and likes o***s, i occasionally entertain wistful, unworthy thoughts. is that evil? oh god, now he's going to be on the list and it'll be all embarrassing. speaking of evil, i went to see 'cruel intentions' the other day, which is a truly dreadful film. the (admittedly gorgeous) main character, played by ryan philippe (one 'l', two 'p's?), is called sebastian, but they pronounce it 'sebasjun', which i have to say grated on me. is that the norm in the US? 'belle and sebasjun' just sounds ugly to me, no offence meant to any americans. have you noticed how b&s have suddenly become a kind of media currency? one of those lazy tactics that music journalists tend to use. first there was the 'good music is good music whether it's made by [random pop group whom i forget] or belle and sebastian' thing, and the other day i read 'blah blah as uncomfortable as a belle and sebastian fan at a def leppard gig'. bloody cheek, taking our names in vain. i for one, LOVE def leppard. well, actually that's not true, but the principle is. (as illustrated by pete ramsdale, and other listees, passim.) whilst straying unexpectedly on topic, i might as well say that i don't think the carpenters comparison is entirely misguided, actually. if you listen to b&s just at that point when you've maybe heard them a bit too much recently and you're not paying that much attention, that is. sarah mentioned helen reddy, and when you consider that i have heard my mother sing 'i am woman, hear me roarrrrrrr', drunkenly, loudly, publicly and out of tunely, it's a miracle that i am still broadly feminist in outlook. it was almost enough to make me think longingly of ironing my husband's shirts in a quiet suburb where not shaving is a crime akin to infanticide, and wearing trousers makes you a radical feminist lesbian. send you a fiver, mr miller? i may be an extravagantly gifted and intelligent graduate, but i'm not running my own charity. yet. i'll get back to you once i get a job, however, because i cannot deny that most of the credit for my degree does indeed go to you. (how do those sarcasm things go again?) Sinister: What have I done?

Aaaaagh. I went to see Get Carter at the cinema last night and completely missed the Radio 1 Bowlie extravaganza. Are there any UK listees who could do me a copy? I would more than happily make a splendid tape from my exquisite record collection in return. I have no B&S stuff that you don't already have, but plenty of fine music to make you smile, to make you cry, and to make you kind of smile shyly with a wee tear in your eye. Lynard Skynard it is, then. Not much else to say at the moment (sighs of relief all round). I also managed to miss the MTV programme. Not a great couple of weeks, on the whole. Those Swedish girls (names escape me) are planning a picnic on 22nd July - my birthday! How did you know? I am also planning a birthday-type picnic in Greenwich Park on Saturday 24th July, so if anyone would like to come to that as well, it would be great. I'll be the one with balloons, lots of fantastic presents from my many, many friends, and a very drunk Spoon in tow. Sinister: cracknell, mosquitoes and my first post

hi everyone, at last my first post( for those who were waiting for it = noone ). i actually managed to see st etienne live( yeahhhhh ). they were playing last thursday at a club in thessaloniki ( greece ). it was great... the crowd dancing during the whole gig and beautiful sarah moving gracefully on the stage... fantastic having seen sarah only on photos and vids, i was a bit suprised when she entered the stage... photos and tapes can't capture true beauty, and i believe that all of you share the same opinion( at least the ones who've seen st etienne live ). sarah was annoyed by the biting mosquitoes( don't they have any sense?( mosquitoes i mean ). there must be a rule for all low-life creatures " DON'T annoy the singer while he/she is singing" ) and some b&s( looper ) content: i finally got the looper album. i haven't listened it much yet, but i liked "ballad of ray suzuki" and "up a tree again"( or sth like that ). because this is my first post i should tell you how i got into b&s. the first song i heard was "dog on wheels". then i managed to get IYFS and that was it. need to say more? More a case of "Steve:Know your limits" non? On a more cheery note the bruises from the Stella Artois/Statue-climbing incident are coming along nicely.I can sit down now.....Yay? Sinister: Colesalaw and Tupperware

Hello, I thought I'd say how I was enjoying reading the present discussion about crushes and the like. The "mystery girl"'s who you admire from afar for me are like daydreams which are very nice but never really ring true. It's not until you speak to a "crush" that the goosebumps tingle (much like when listening to LLPJ live at Bowlie on the radio yesterday, thanks to the Sleeka'd ones post I caught the end of it). As you start chatting you get a glimpse of something more than the way they look. Then you have a taste of a beauty inside as well as outside. That's the sort of crush that for me makes everything else seem unimportant. And if they were to be carrying around a roughed up copy of one of your favourite books and said they were reading it again because they loved it so much or they mentioned one of your favourite songs in passing I'd be a jibbering wreck for aeons. This isn't to say the next time you see them they won't lean over with breath smelling of coleslaw and talk about their passion for tupperware for hours but it would have been good while it lasted. Anyway, I'll stop here before I dye my hair pink and splatter my face with powder puff and become the new Barbara Cartland. Well I could have carried on and really written a load of old shit like our own Mr Ploppy-kins. Celebrity turds eh? Hasn't that already been done on Blankety Blank with the wacky turd always in the middle of the bottom row next to a Lorraine Chase type turd? Anyway, I'd also like to say hello to everyone at the London picnics this weekend they were a lot of fun. Hopefully I did enough to impress Jim and Trousers that I am worthy of a place in the Sinister footy team for All Tomorrow's Parties. I am presently available on a free transfer from the seemingly unpopular but ultimately successful Camera Obscura side. Thanks those there for forgiving my traitorous if glorious past. Also if anyone wants to meet up for the "random gig" by some band somewhere in London on Wednesday as mentioned in Jim's post yesterday you can mail me as I should be going too. Hi, little flies: Seems that there is somebody who can Žt trust his brother, because the first song of the Bowlie set was "Slow Graffitti". IŽm sure that there is a kind soul who is goin g to tape this show for me. The Barcelon a gig seems a good deal for a trade. The latest issue of the spanish musical magazine "Factory" features a cool article about all the Jeepster world. It came out yesterday, and there are good reviews from anything related with our fell ows. Except the fact that the journalist thinks that Mr.Murdoch has bad education for not giving any interview. Boll ocks. He knew it from the start. However, he does a fine work, and is suspicious of being another lad who has fell into the charms of Isobel, even though her in terview only lasts for a bit more than a quarter of page. But interesting, because weŽre able to know that Isobel likes the catalan gen ius that is mr. Pascal Comelade, one of the most original and creative musicians that exists in the old Europe. I donŽt have any of their records, but the catalan telly broadcast a gig from him a year ago and it was one of the most amazing things iŽve ever seen. Collonut. The bits about B&S are fine, even though itŽs more from the same. Chris attends the interview, and says that they l ove "Tigermilk", donŽt think that "..sin ister" has the appropiate sound, and that it was hard to make "The boy...". Oh, one question to Elle Zober: the article features the picture that appeared at the latest article from Select, and now itŽs credited to Elle, when at Select it was credited to Mick Hutson. Who did that picture ? iŽm just curious, as IŽm curious to know if her and Ronnie Black have join ed the staff from Factory, as itŽs credited at the magazine. Well, you know my other adress, I think. If it turns out that he's a professional music critic (and if he owns this CD he almost certainly is), odds are that he's a bed-wetter and probably allergic to sex. Sinister: looper in southern calif.

i must say.. The looper performance yesterday at "This Ain't No Picnic", was splendid! Stuard and Wee Karn playing songs like, Burning flies, Treehouse, Up a Tree again, .. and a song I had'nt heard yet called , Who's afraid of Y2K.. Afterwards, Stuart and Karn we're happily signing autographs, and talking to their fans.. Tonight they play again at the Troubadour in Hollywood.. I'll be looking forward to seeing them again..
