Birthdays are not exactly unexpected, they're not like the crickets at the end of Grandaddy's "Under the Western Freeway" album or anything. That said, I hadn't exactly been gearing up for the big three-oh, thinking it to be a reason for commiserating rather than celebrating..... Then last Saturday I went into Superdrug and the girl at the checkout asked me if I had an NUS card. "I turn thirty next month," I replied. "Oh really, you don't look it!" said she, really putting the super into Superdrug as far as I was concerned. Anyway, the *big day* is Oct 17th, but as this is a "school night" I have decided to celebrate on the Saturday before, so if any UK listees in or within easy reach of London can make it to the Head of Steam just outside Euston Station (see http://www.theheadofsteam.com/Euston.html)from about 7.30-ish on Saturday 14th you'll be most welcome. so iŽll have to be fast on writing....... Of course the restaurant we went on saturday was possibly the tackiest in my city. Damn, I live here and I always have lunch at home....yes, it sounds childish but itŽs true...... Ummm...it wasnŽt a really good picnic probably (at least on the , but the fact is: ¿ what do we need ? come on, next time iŽll try to make it even tackier........even if some England listees come here to make a visit....:))) next time weŽll have the cheapest booze ever....weŽll stole some wine from a church.... Sinister: Beware the Wrath of Sting

>From the moment in first hour on Monday morning that I saw what my French teacher had written on the board ------> "lundi, le 2 octobre-c'est l'anniversaire de Sting! Il a 49 ans." I knew that meant trouble. Promptly I discovered that our school's air conditioning had broken that morning, and when you live in the desert where it's still 98 degrees that's no good. Then I knew The Wrath Of Sting was upon us. True, I don't get this nervous when it's, say, Morrissey's birthday, but then again what pop star this side of George Michael could inspire such terror? I tried to plod through the day avoiding mishap, but no use. I got a 65 on a math quiz, on stuff I knew well. I lost my good pen. The computer in newspaper was jammed and I couldn't print out my article. When I got home I tripped and fell, banging my head on the coach. It even took me a long time to get to bed, because my fan was suddenly and mysteriously broken. So if you had a bad day Monday, don't blame it on a friend or a teacher or yourself-blame it on Sting!! Adding to Melissa's comment about being the only B&S fan in her city...I am from Portland, OR (on the west coast of the US for those who might not know) and seem to be one of the very few who knows of them. It's lonely over here without anyone to ramble on about new songs and such. Whereas, when I was in Spain, I met a rather nice English man named Gary who, of course, knew of them and we were able to chat a bit. I was also very jealous when someone mentioned that they heard "I fought in a war" on the radio--that would NEVER happen here. How sad for our musically-challenged American culture. Hello everyone, This is my first time posting...i have been on and off the list for about a year now, but have been a little too shy to acually post anything...i just sit and read what all you dear listees have to say. My name's Melissa...and I am 17, and live in Long Island, New York (where i think i am the only B&S fan around). The talk of the new Radiohead album gave me the little push I needed to post something.... Radiohead Ramblings: I bought Kid-A last night at midnight, I've been waiting for this album for what it seems like years...actually...wait...it has been a few years, either way, I've been waiting for it for a long time. I was lucky enough to attend the listening party in NYC, I had isolated myself from anything dealing with the album until then. I was just shocked when i first heard the album....I didn't know whether i liked it or hated it....it actually made me want to run home and listen to the bends. With much thought, I decided I did like the album and i was dying to listen to it again. So, I went out last night and bought the album the second it went on sale. I've been listening to it on and off all day, and I really do like it....i think that "Everything In It's Right Place", "How To Disappear Completely", "Idioteque" and "Morning Bell" are the best songs on the album. Anyway, i feel like i am taking far much of your time (those of you who are so curtious to read this), I wish everyone a nice night, and I hope everyone is well. Staying with comics because they are all that really matter, just finished reading Chris Ware's Jimmy Corrigan: The Smartest Kid straight through. Nice to see it collected. And it's great. Not since Craig Thompsons Goodbye, Chunky Rice two years back have I stumbled across anything so good. Both are far better than anything of Clowes that I have read, except for perhaps the Caricatures short. That was really good. (Sorry if you've received this before, my mail's been playing silly buggers...) Blimey, you make a short observation about a foreign language and the next thing you know everyone's talking about old aeroplanes. And thats why the sinister list is grate. Steven Kado said: "discuss: comics. now!" OK I wouldn't describe Dan Clowes as an overdone bozo though I admit most of his stuff (like early 8balls) is hard to come by in the sticks areas of englishland. Ghost World is one of my favourite graphic novels -like- ever man. Lout Rampage is worth a look especially if you're into Jack T Chick spoofs and repulsive artwork. He's not as funny as Peter Bagge though. Someone nice whose name I can't remember asked whether Portsmouth Wedgewood Rooms was actually full of fine china crockery. It isn't. It does have fairly civilised bouncers and improved toilets but it's your usual Church of St. Lamacq small venue. Having the Deladgos and Clearlake there should improve things immeasurably though. It's gonna be difficult to do a digital painting of B&S on Top of the Pops since I never saw it. I might just use some amazing photomanipulation software to put B&S on TOTP back in its 60s glory days. And have Jimmy Saville attacking Struan instead of a gorilla. Disturbing thought. Sinister: To The Place I Belong

Hi All, I think I once saw Toots & The Maytals perform "Take Me Home, etc." in Hyde Park. Obviously they couldn't get away with singing Mr Denver's original lyrics so changed home to "West Jamaica". Luckily getting older means that you don't have to care about whether or not you like Radiohead. Bowie At The Beeb triple CD is good value, new Broadcast ep is good. Hefner singles also, (but have all been heard before on the radio). Hefner remixed by Poxendale must be Peter Miller's idea of heaven. I went to church on Sunday, too. The clergyman officiating was a nice old bloke, so when he shook hands with me I said "Bless me Father" and he was my Dad. I found reading Hymns Ancient & Modern Revised more interesting than the latter half of the service. No way is it true that the devil has all the best tunes. I reckon all that singing in the choir has soaked into Stuart Murdoch's soul & that's why he writes such stirring melodies. Stuart, what are your 3 favourite hymns? Channel 4 Planet Sound teletext says that the "Belle & Sebastian DJ's" are no longer going to tour with Snow Patrol, as they are in the studio. What on earth would they be doing there? Messerschmitt trivia section: its a nice irony that when they made the film The Battle Of Britain there weren't any airworthy Bf.109's left, so they had to use ex-Ejercito del Aire ones (that's a HA-1112-M1L or C.4K, Segunditos). These had to be built with Merlin engines (as on the Hurricanes & Spitfires popularly held to have won the Battle) when the supply of Daimler Benz 600 series engines dried up after the war. So both side's planes in the film are powered by Rolls Royce Merlins. i guess when a band produces something different it is considered a shame. maybe radiohead shouldn't have made they're first album. since its SO different. i guess i'm a big idiot because i thought when you listened to music, you were listening to someone's creative perspective. catchy pop tunes and repeatitive drum beats are produced in mass quantities. when a band like radiohead produces an album like this, you should listen. not with your ears. but with your mind. some of the comments about kid-a have been extremly closed minded. in my opinion, any musician willing to make music and distribute it to millions of homes deserve a bit more respect. and yeah, i bet if belle and sebastian made an experimental album that sounded completely different everyone would say "Oh, how wonderfully different!" +----------------------------------------------------------------------+ +---+ Brought to you by the undead Sinister mailing list +---+ To send to the list mail sinister(a)missprint.org. Sinister: How Scandinavian of me (?)

Hi Groovers Working late and I just had to drop an advice-seeking mail (as an advice-seeking female) who has just gone all squishy about a certain Scandinavian boy. Oh Lordy, I'm swooning like a bad 'un. So I work for this ad agency where I write words n' stuff and we got this Web-bit where lotsa techie people sit shouting JAVA-JAVA-JAVA all day long. And I don't go down there much, coz it's a bit scary when you use words and not numbers to make language, or something. Anyway. Tonight they are giving this presentation which is "Wot we do and who does it" with free beer and finger food, so I'm going, and there's this guy sitting there looking cool n' cutting-edge (in his own way). Turns out he is one of these techie people and (I'M SHOCKED) is fab and funny and handsome and SCANDINAVIAN, which makes me go all stoopid and girly and stoopid again. And he's chatting away about how he used to "modify" PLAYBOY TV, but he got real bored coz all the ladies were boring and stereotypical (Isn't he GRATE?). And not to forget how he's a bit of an alien in the UK, so I'm busting not to say "DO YOU NEED A GREEN CARD???" What'ma gonna do? Means I'm gonna have to start hanging about in the scary bit of the building and learn binary and start checking my blemishes (ohmygod, I have blemishes) at lunchtime. I shouldn't even be here - I should be out exercising or having an acid peel or at least swotting up on the history of the Sauna (oh, baby) and it's direct influence on the Bjork back-catalogue.
