When Hollywood finally gets around to making a "modern rendition" of F. Scott Fitzgerald's "The Great Gatsby," how much would you pay to see Britney Spears as Daisy? Nothing? Ok, just making sure we're all on the same page... No one has said whether the new B&S album has been completed, so I guess that means they're STILL at it. This is going to be an epic record I imagine! I mean, seriously, how long has the recording been for this album...5-6 months of straight work? It was supposed to be done in June, then September, then October, then November, then January, now at least February which means it won't be out until at least May...Ye Gads! It'll all be worth it though when the record is done and we can all hear Struan's take on "For Those About to Rock (We Salute You)." I know that this little tidbit hasn't hit the rumor mill yet, but let's just say I'm "in the know." Ok, I'm really not and I made that entire thing up...but I'd still like to see it. Apparently we have two future bridge-hoppers in our midst, which makes for some very interesting talk. I do the same thing, but only with curbs like I dare myself to just totally hop the curbs on the side of...oh God that sound lame compared to bridge jumping. I'm not even going to finish that idea... Someone voted for me in the list crush polls recently. Please people, if you only knew my sorry ass rating in on-line chess, I'd be shunned like a leper. I used to be quite a monster on the school team, but now the magic is gone. My Najdorf Sicilian is as sterile as Quentin Crisp. How sad. Where did someone hear that B&S are playing ATP? Wow, if thats true those tickets will go like mad! I really hope they play that or Glastonbury this year (which I hear will feature REM and the Flaming Lips). When was the last show B&S played, like April or May or something? It's got to be close to a year right? Sinister: Everybody's Trying To Sell Us, Another 60's Retro Record

Yo! Sorry for this twice in one night stuff, but it doesn't happen very often. I may have missed this appearing earlier whilst in my Sinister Space Invaders type flipping of the delete key period, but a couple of eNeMeEs ago our Stevie Jackson had this to say about the new Where Two Eyebrows Meet album: I liked it. I kind of wanted to like it. I loved Oasis when they came out, especially the first record. I never got the third album because I heard it was all cocaine and guitar solos so it didn't really appeal to me. This new one was quite enjoyable. The songs are OK but I enjoyed the record for Liam's voice mainly. Noel scuppers a few of the songs because he cannot resist throwing his references everywhere. The first tune had a bit of Voodoo Chile in it and one of them had Roadhouse Blues by The Doors and Something In The Air by Thunderclap Newrnan. The whole album seems to have an obsession with 1968 or '69 but it still sounds OK. I was led to believe that Liam's song was really twee and horrible - even worse than some people imagine Belle & Sebastian to be - but I thought his vocal transcended that. Obviously, its just another Oasis album really but I do think theyre back on the right track a wee bit and the songs are a bit better. It has all got less interesting since the second album but I liked it just because it was another Oasis album and its enjoyable for what it is. So there you are then. I'm at it too, as I succumbed to the lure of The Who box (not slip-cased) set the other day coz the Megawhores had it knocked down in their sale. Maximum R'n'B indeed. What did Honey lick that gave him oral thrush? I hope it wasn't poor Rebecca the Sheep - chocolate's really hard to get out of her wool. First off, props for bringing up the idea of a culinary threade, whomever that might have been. I promise in the near future to contbribute excellent recipies for A Century of Lord Anthony Truffles, and Creme Brulee de la Bourgoise (notable for its use of a torch) if anyone's interested...upon reading said suggestion, thoughts on food struck me as a cracking antidote for the possible dangers of electronic communicaton (nevermind that i seem to have missed lunch *again*). Anyhoo, knowing that there is at least 1 NYU person reading this, I'm looking for info @ the Clientele show there Thurs. Is it possible to get advance tix? Anything you know would be helpful, as I can't make it until late, and I really don't want to miss them... a quick thanks also for the fine posts that keep my inbox bulging, whatever that's worth. STORYTIME I once had someone ask me to beg people to use the Subject line in emails to the list sensibly, i.e. give an indication of the content. This struck me as 1. impossible to do usually, and 2. like asking for the moon on a stick(c) and so I'm striking out in the other direction. It's always struck me how interesting the presence of "Subject:" is in email communication, as we now use emails to communicate as a medium somewhere on the continuum between real speech and letters, and in neither of these cases does the medium require us to sum up the content we've made in a single line. I guess it's an interesting hang over from the early days when embryonic email was seen as a rather distant form of communication like waving flags or like a formal office protocol. I quite like the way we're still saddled with it, and the different protocols we adopt when we fill in (or choose not to fill in that pesky "Subject:" box). Honestly, I could talk for hours about this with even bigger and posher words. Instead I've decided to try using the Subject: line to tell a mass Sinister story. Here, I've started it above. If anyone wants to join in next time you post (and you'll be shot if you send a mail JUST for the sake of the Subject line!), start your line with a little star like me. Not a little star like me, the only time I've been on TV was when I was 8 for two seconds, no, a little star like wot I did. Then if you keep all the messages from Sinister in a folder you'll be able to read a little story down the page! Then I can put it in the Sinister library! Then we can publish it! Look, stop laughing, it seemed like a good idea when I started typing it. Oh and no cheating with huge long Subject lines, you're only allowed one line in your mail reader, which should be less than 60 letters, each time you post. Great art usually comes from a highly restrictive set of starting criteria, like those people who make models of ocean liners from lollipop sticks. Fubble's lonely, please help. BRITS BOING I see the Brit Awards (http://www.brits.co.uk/) have changed their voting policy since last year's interesting non-Sinister related results. It seems that they've been keeping a close eye on Sinister though, because like the List Crush, which used to be run via WWW votes like the 1999 Brits voting, they've moved to an email-verified system. I'm wondering if (a) you can vote for yourself if you're a member of S Club Seven, and (b) they match you up if two bands vote for each other. Miss Crush tells me she's matched up 10 couples on Sinister now, and I'm debating asking Damon, our Body Part Enforcer, to introduce a rule that any couple so matched must send a close, out-of-focus bodypart photo of them both conjoined. Shh, they could be touching ears. TOP OF THE POPS We seem to have suddenly become dead popular, like flares. We've just exceeded the 1200 mark of subscribers today, after hovering spookily around 1150 for about 4 months, which always struck me as odd, bearing in mind the constant flux of subs and unsubs. Has someone been putting something in the water? Hello everyone in the nursery, it's so packed out just now I don't know if I've got enough milk cartons, but I'll do my best. I've also been sent a stack of photos today so they're up too, including a few bodyparts. Nothing has quite eclipsed Tummy-02 yet, although I've been promised a picture of someone naked on a motorbike. Does the leather run smooth on the passenger seat, I wonder? Why isn't there a Toe-01 yet? There's also quite a few new faces on the other pages, and a couple of babies that quite make me gurgle. Look for the big border round new photos. Hello Sinister Siblings! A bit of B&S buisness first and then the useless stuff. Having listened to the Black Sessions and some other Live stuff I'm even more impressed than ever with the group. The live stuff sounds *perfect*, not a small achievment as I'm usually disappointed in most bands upon seeing them live. *sigh* Now if I could only see them live instead of just hearing them. Century of Fakers and Sleep the Clock around from the Black Sessions are amazing versions, I almost can't listen to the CD versions of those songs anymore. The mid-song piano rif in Sleep the Clock Around from the Black Sessions gets me every time. Of course, I was able to hear Paper Boat for the first time. Would anyone happened to have Paperboat tabbed or chorded out? It's not up at the Sinister chord page. I can usually do a half-decent job of chording a song out but I'd trust somelse's version better. Lotsa bootleg stuff on ebay I notice, the last Black Sessions video I saw on there was going for well over $100, which strikes me as excessive no matter how much you like the band. Missed the SNL B&S interlude, who knew SNL was worth watching anymore? Listened to The Magnetic Fields Wayward Bus and Distant Plastic Trees for the first time yesterday and now I'm hooked and I've fallen in love with Susan Anway's voice. Most of you listees are prolly already familiar with The Magnetic Fields, if you're not than march right out and pick up the Wayward Bus/Distant Plastic Trees album. It's brilliant and I kick myself for not knowing about them prior to this. Oh, I've got the 69 Love Songs collection, but this is far, far better. Also heard a song by the Lucksmiths and am now busy hunting down CD's by them, if you like B&S then give them a try. I was looking through a friend's copy of Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman and discovered he has the American version while I have the British trade paperback version. The funny thing being that the publisher 'americanized' the accents and references in the NA version of the book. Which cracks me up to no end. I mean, do British publishers fiddle with American works so you Brits can understand our slang and funny accents? Anyways, onward and downward... Joseph had this to say: "We sat around, expounding on the brilliance of Frank Miller and carrying on about whether or not "Watchmen" was REALLY better than "Dark Knight Returns". We're such nerds." Watchmen of course, though V for Vendetta dances widdershins around both of them and Authority and Planetary piss on all of them from a great height while the Invisibles look on. I think this may be slightly bending the "don't post unless it's of interest to lots of people" rule as I have no idea whatsoever who is going to be interested in this, but I just thought I should include the general masses in this announcement as it would be quite a long list if I just sent this to the people i thought may be interested, and I'd probably miss someone out and they'd be offended. Anyway, what I want to tell you is that (and I know this is going to break some hearts, ha ha) on Saturday night I agreed to get married. To a bloke who doesn't like Belle and Sebastian. At all. But I don't care one little bit about the shortcomings of his taste in music cos he is a lovely bloke. Which is obvious really or I wouldn't be marrying him. Eek. I feel all grown up now. I have a fiancé. It's like having a pension, or a mortgage. Or responsiblities. No wonder people want to remain kids forever. I'd like to say something else so that the rest of you who don't even know me will think I am great and witty and stuff, and not just the sort of person who mails to tell you dull personal things you don't give a toss about, but I have nothing to say. You'd know it was a lie anyway, as you're all dead good at reading the archives and stuff. Do you think Stuart would sing at my wedding?
