hallo, hello, hillo, hollo, hullo, and sometimes hyllo, well i must say it's been a week of revealing truths betwixt me and my friends. it has been refreshing tho. to get these things off of my chest. and theirs. unfortunatly one thing my good friend brent had no qualms pointing out to me thursday when we were preparing for our evening out was that Belle and Sebastian are 'hippy fags' *sigh* you see i tried to get them to enjoy it. i played tigermilk. sigh. the entire cd he sang 'hippy fags. were a bunch of hippy fags who live in scotland and think we're cool' while it is funny. i think it's very rude when i will sit thorugh a cd of his or sit and listen to him beat on his guitar. stupid boys. invisible boy states: ***Please tell me I'm not the only one.... Every day I need to walk several times over a bridge which crosses a decent sized river, and I swear that every time I get an almost (*almost*) uncontrollable urge to just drive right off. Not that I want to die, you understand, not that at all. I have this problem with heights - I just want to jump. I get it even in places like the upper floors in shopping centres or peoples landings. I'm not kidding. so i should be doing my thesis (i was earlier today, i swear!) but i decided to post to sinister. first a little b&s-ish content: i wish i had a television. moreso i wish i had a television that got NBC (for some reason we don't get it in this area of campus) so i could know all this stuff about SNL playing b&s. ah, oh well. good to hear the band haven't disbanded (ha! i made a funny), but i didn' think they would, anyway. i mean, what would they do without stuart d.? so a girl i knew a bit a couple years ago who sort of blew me off (long story, but we were supposed to live together, and she ended up living someplace else and stopped speaking to me) was in my room the other night and looks at my wall and says "i'm so in love with all the bands you have posters of [namely b&s, the jesus and mary chain, slint, prince, morrissey, and madonna], particularly belle and sebastian." and since i've sort of lost respect for her i just kind of said "that's nice." was that awful of me not to embrace some other fellow fan here? of course, it's not like we're totally at a loss for them out here, there's 4 of us on the list (well, two aren't here now, but they used to be), i hear belle and sebbie playing from windows of the various buildings around here, and last year some girl whispered to her friend as she walked behind me when we crossed paths "she has a belle and sebastian patch!" referring to my homemade patch with the two dancing kids on it. it's quite nice, too, if i do say so myself. ho hum. so that went nowhere and took a very long time to do so. i got a new computer, so i'm happy. my old one died a slow and painful death, and is currently sitting in the corner of my room, waiting to be dismantled and thrown out the window. no, i'll probably just give parts away to people who want them. but my new computer is pink. and it's named landon auger, because it's very quiet and enjoys puzzles. how twee of me. so last night i was up until 4am and got hungry and polished off the better portion of a wedge of brie and several pickles. that's bad. but i made powerpuff girls startup screens for my computer. that's good. but they don't look perfect yet. that's bad. but it comes with your choice of free topping. that's good. the toppings contain sodium benzoate (that's bad). okay, now that i'm done spewing simpsons nonsense i'll move on to bigger and better things. maybe i should start campaigning for list crush votes. you know, make buttons and stuff. teehee. or i could just take my old "john kerry for us senate" sign and mangle it so it says "kerry for list crush" instead. actually, i already cut the "john" out, so it currently says "kerry for us senate," which i've been repeatedly getting a huge kick out of for about 3 and a half years (that's bad). um. has anybody here listened to any of will oldham's bonnie prince billy stuff? what's it like? let me know privately, please. it's about time i got meself some new music, and that's close to the top of the list (that's good). -kerry "sustained by special providence, i am fighting for dear life against that demonic rice-cake." -Soseki Natsume, _i am a cat_ +----------------------------------------------------------------------+ +---+ Brought to you by the undead Sinister mailing list +---+ To send to the list mail sinister(a)missprint.org. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ to die of boredom..." ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ welcome all...i haven't posted for a while...i've been listening to alot of felt lately... i think they are a band that i will never get bored of... & it got me thinking...(dangerous i know...) in 10 years or so...what bands or artistes are going to be remembered as representing this generation...is it going to be oasis and the manics...& robbie williams!?! ...( i have nothing personal against any of these bands or people ) already from 10 - 15 years ago...some truly great bands have been forgotten... lawrence and felt is one of them...dan treacy and the television personalities is another...bid and the monochrome set another...( i would also like to mention the pale fountains and shack and michael and john head but that is another post on its own! ) there are loads more...i have a special affection for creation records...i can even forgive alan mcgee for turning into the anti - christ...and even though the start of the end for creation was the signing of oasis and the selling out to sony...i still had a soft spot for them...they put out some of my favourite records of all time...to me alan mcgee was never " creation records boss " he was alan mcgee of biff bang pow! ...who wrote songs that could tear your heart in two... bid and the monochrome set were responsible for some of the finest pop moments known to man!...the three that i have mentioned probably never won an award between them... none of them are household names...yet they mean so much to me...they have played an important part in my life...and in 10 - 15 years time when robbie has turned into rod stewart and oasis and the manics have turned into status quo and dire straits... ...who's gonna remember lawrence , dan or bid... ~~~~~ fortune ~~~~~ i like the way belle and sebastian have managed to stay loyal to jeepster...after the brit award thing i imagine most major labels were foaming at the mouth trying to tempt them away from jeepster...loyalty is such a rare commodity these days...i love the fact that they are still with jeepster... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ forever breathes the lonely word... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ i like this mp3 thing...i really do...it will be great for music on the move...but i find the idea that very soon you will be able to download an entire music collection off the net ludicrous ...i have no doubts that this will be possible...but yet again i feel the men in suits are completely missing the point...you see i like to own things...i like to collect...i love vinyl...i like to touch it and smell it ...i like the feel of it...i like cd's too ...but i love vinyl...i like the sleeves i like the little messages scratched into the end of the record...about 10 - 15 years ago we were told cd's would eventually replace vinyl by the year 2000...well 2000 is here and vinyl is still fighting its corner...i wouldn't trade my vinyl in for the world...i would rather own 2000 records taking up half my flat...instead of 50 or so memory chips in a shoebox...maybe i'm just stubborn and old fashioned... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ the optimist and the poet ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ another felt title i'm afraid ...i seem to have felt on the brain...but i love this song title i think it would make a great film title...recently i've been having a crisis of sorts...an internal war going on in my head...i lost my faith in p*o*p ...so i went away to another country to gather my thoughts and to forget about things for a while...and what happens...i walk into a bar...to be confronted by the sea urchins " pristine christine " ...swiftly followed by primal scream " all fall down "...14 iced bears " come get me " ...and the field mice " fabulous friend " ...i was a good 2000 miles away from home...and it was like being struck by lightning...it sent shivers down my spine! and then to cap off an extremely pleasant evening the dj played love's " alone again or " followed by belle and sebastians " dog on wheels " ...so my faith has been restored...it was a truly surreal experience...that i shall never forget as long as i live... i met some fellow pop fans...a list member ( who shall remain nameless )... who is now officially my best friend in the world...and for the first time in my life i am optimistic of the future ( so i am the optimist ) and she is most definately the poet... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ " I'LL REST THIS CASE... Lieber Sinister, So I gather from Fiona's post (which I just accidentally deleted) that 'twee fucker' is something of an oxymoron. I don't think the content of the list is pornographic a-tall, and I'm not suggesting that it should be more so, cos there's really no point in it unless you're vaguely flirting, and flirting indiscriminately is no good. Anything other than the mention of the exact perception or its objective correlative (to borrow a term from Eliot) is peripheral. I guess it can't be helped that people want to tell 3rd parties about their feelings - indulgence towards lovers and all that. And could it be that by some circuitous route that is the source of pornography? Which is why films like 'Boogie Nights' are funny and sad. Sometimes I wonder about the truth of these lines in a song by Love: "you know that I could be in love with almost everyone/I think people are the greatest fun". Striking beauty becomes more ordinary with familiarity, but then I hold my breath when people I've taken for granted catch the light. I'm glad that this is so cos I wouldn't want to be in awe of someone forever. My German instructor is very very pretty. She was sick most of last last week and when she came back, she seemed more human. I'm puzzled by what Stuart thinks it is to be twee (if such a thing exists; more often it seems that people are after an idea of something that's not real). It's like innocence: after you're aware that such a thing exists, it's gone. So it's not authentic, and the lack of authenticity seems to be what it means more than anything else. But what Stuart wrote seems like a rejection of his former self: I mean reducing it all to knitting in pubs. Why not say that once he was that fragile! Has anyone seen the Belle & Sebastian lyric/reference page? http://www.fineran.demon.co.uk/basrefs/ It's really great. The source of one of my favorite lyrics could be a Hal Hartley film: "A family's like a loaded gun ..." On saturday night i DJed ("I am a DJ, I am what I play" - bowie) at Pop! I took the kids to school and played a few B&S numbers, because, although the kids don't know it, they love B&S, it is what they WANT to hear!! They had no choice really....Anyway, I was a success, and have been asked to DJ at the next Pop! Well hello again, some of you may remember me, most of you probably won't, I didn't post much anyway (and they were never worth reading!) But I thought I'd pipe up now as I've got a whole week without work, on account of starting a new job in Manchester a week on Monday, and I've no excuse for NOT writing something. However boring it may prove to be..... Does anybody else on the list love the band Spearmint as much as I do? Probably not seeing as their latest single entered the charts at no 88 last week, and I don't imagine you have to sell TOO many copies to achieve that....about 15 I'd guess...so shame on you all for not rushing out and buying it...single of the decade by a mile! Well done to Rachel for mentioning the sad and tragic death of Martin Aldridge, who was on playing on loan at Rushden and Diamonds FC (my mum and dad's local team)when he died. The death of a minor footballer may not mean much to many of you, but when I went home last, the whole town was in a state of shock, so I know how Rachel feels. Well, I suppose I may try and write more frequently, and who knows I may even think of something interesting to write...stranger things have happened... By the way, what happened to all the old timers anyhow? Starry's the only one I can remember round here.... And if anybody's ever in the Manchester arae wants to meet up and say hi, I should be moving there soon. ..Someday ..Someday soon ..lifes gonna catch up with you ..someday ..someday soon ..It's all gonna crash down on you hello list kids. It's been another weekend. Another few hangovers, another few dissapointments. I've done my exams this past week, and I won't have any for another 3-4 weeks. Luckily. So now, I can just sulk about and participate fully in all my hedonist dreams. My last post (also Sarahless) involved my rockstar poseur attitude. That was probably last week. This past week. I feel like I am being looked at, followed, and stalked. There is a general sense of uneasyness... and sometimes I feel as though I am going quite mad. Still. There are those few people in my life, that make all the uneasyness dissapear. When I get to bask in their passion for life and fun, I easily forget everything that is bothering me... But now, I sit alone in my room...trying to find the energy to leave the house and do something productive... It's 4:36 in the afternoon... and the likleyhood of doing anything useful seems to be diminishing at an extraordinary rate. The thought of sitting at home, watching sappy movies, and crying seems so much more useful.... Some B&S content: I had a good night last night. Went to the pub with Sarah and met up with some friends. Had a couple ciders and such....generally had a good time. The pub owner lets us play our Cd's in the hi-fi...which is rocking, cos' otherwise we would have to listen to some half-arsed american country type music. Anyway. So, Sarah and I did get to enjoy some good Belle & Sebastian tunes that night... I was feeling quite down as it was.. but watching Sarah singing to B&S... made me happy. She is so beautiful to watch when she gets passionate about something. Her eyes close...and she just sings...it feels like we are the only people in the world that know the way things are...the only ones that understand what B&S means... anyway! Also, London info. I've heard some of this talk about Tigermilking or whatever in London. If someone can please give me info on this, I would be most greatful. Me, Sarah and Company..will be in london march2-13th... so, yeah. Let me know what all that is about. Its very sad when you give up on someone. It's like you have lost all hope in the human race as a whole. I used to feel that I could like/love anyone and everyone... but as I am experiencing new relationships (of the boyfriendish nature) I realise that sometimes you just can not "make do" with what you have. The only thing I wonder..is it my fault that I can not "make do" with other peoples faults...or is that their problem... I will now go, and be the type of girl I never thought I would be. I will watch a sappy movie, eat chocholate cake, and cry. :) Should be a new experience. One that I hopefully won't make a habit of.
