where to begin? i have read with interest the calls for change to the list, and in the main i agree, but spank me with a potato masher and call me ernie, is there really any need for quite so much smut. i know some of you are trying to prove that being a b+s fan doesn't mean you are 'twee' or have no interest in sex of any kind (although i do wonder if that would be a good thing in some cases). but really, some of us have to read this in a public place. seriously, sinister is in some respects a sanctuary for me, somewhere to escape the debauchery of real life. evenin' pop pickers (well, it is for me...) ***Please tell me I'm not the only one.... Every day I need to walk several times over a bridge which crosses a decent sized river, and I swear that every time I get an almost (*almost*) uncontrollable urge to just drive right off. Not that I want to die, you understand, not that at all. I have this problem with heights - I just want to jump. I get it even in places like the upper floors in shopping centres or peoples landings. I'm not kidding. Dammit I just wanna JUMP. Falling...mmmmm Someone rescue my romanitcally disillusional soul. Hmmm, what a blitheringly nice weekend. I seem to have spent it all being asleep, reading my Milan Kundera novel (Identity) and watchings vids. And look what's happened - I feel all fresh, cogent and articulate. Looks like I'm going to have go get myself leathered now lest I go into work tommorow feeling good and start getting all cocky "I wonder what'll happen if I push *this* button..." etc. which wouldn't do at all. Being a boy of few words, I'll shut up now and go and get my beers, while I try to learn how to play some B&S songs (picks up guitar and starts smacking it wildly). Delightful. Oh, here come the neighbours looking angry, better run away. Sinister: confused ramblings

i'm not sure how to write about what i want to write about now. it's been going round my head, all jumbled and tangled and i can't get the thoughts straight. so forgive me if what i say doesn't make sense; it's because it doesn't make sense, not to me anyway. i went to the football yesterday. the match and outcome aren't important, they were overshadowed by the fact last saturday a guy called martin aldridge died in a road accident, and the game was played in memory of him. he was 25, and had played as striker for both teams involved, oxford and blackpool. i didn't know him, i only met him out on the lash a couple of times over the time he was with us. yet during the minutes silence the sheer weight of memory i have for the man hit home. i saw this guy doing his job for 90 minutes at most twice a week for a couple of seasons, yet i felt like i knew him. is this wrong, inappropriate? he expressed himself through the way he did his job. do you, the people on this list feel you know stuart murdoch through his songwriting? i know that during certain songs i do, yet i've never met him and to be honest i don't want to, it could only be a let down. but i think i know my dad, after all he's my dad. yet i see him at the most for an hour a night during the week and maybe more at the weekend, if i'm lucky. so for all those hours that i don't see him, what does he do? what's he like? is he exactly the same when he's mr tucker, systems analyst, or when he's good old graham down the pub, as he is when he's my dad? does he even exist? i was at work the other day and this customer said that she'd seen me in her daughter's school photograph. she was really shocked because she'd assumed that i worked in co-op all day. so to her, and various people in my town, my existence is entwined with that of a supermarket, even though i only spend a tiny(ish) proportion of my time there. for martin aldridge's family yesterday they witnessed 5000 football fans honour martin aldridge the striker. did that confuse them as much as it confused me? i can't get my head around his life away from the football pitch, but at the same time assume things about him and his life from how he acted on the football pitch. and now he's dead. i'm stuck now, my incoherent ramble can't find a way out of this. rachel xxx +----------------------------------------------------------------------+ +---+ Brought to you by the undead Sinister mailing list +---+ To send to the list mail sinister(a)missprint.org. hello chickadees, i've finally taken the plunge and mailed the list after weeks of plucking up the courage, although my mail will unfortunately remain not that exciting...sorry. Sinister: SNL Surrealness

Hey! Not like I ever write in or anything, but I just had to comment cos it was so odd, they just played a good minute, at least, of "TIJAMRS" in a skit on Saturday Night Live, in the US, preceded by Luna's "23 Minutes in Brussels" and followed by the Eagles' "Hotel California" and Beck's "Cyanide Breath Mint." It was not actually a SNL skit, but a short film done by a guy called Adam McKay. The skit was something rather smutty, and silly, abt guys in a bar wanting to seduce the star of "The Heat is On" or something. But it was still surreal to hear it in such a context. If only they had played the Magnetic Fields or something, too! Sinister: they're still(er) the one!

Okay, for once I think staying in on a Saturday night *may* have been worth it. So just to let everyone on the list who is either not in the US, or who has a social life to speak of: B&S music was used (for quite some time) in a Saturday Night Live segment tonight. It was played in the background during a bar scene just prior to a scintillating bit featuring Ben Stiller et al cavorting in sundry homosexual acts. But there it was! Vocals and all! And though no one else in #sinister seemed to hear it, I was sure I heard someone say "great album" after the music was played. It wasn't like they band were mentioned, or that the whole song was used, but there definitely is something exhilirating about hearing B&S on as widely a watched show as SNL. oh my fucking god make it stop make it stop! "this is just a modern rock song" is playing Right Now on saturday night live while ben stiller is making out with some guy. i kid you not. and they actually played the parts while struan Sings, not just the music part like when they play b&s on things like mtv's rock the vote or whatever that was. oh this is just wrong. way wrong.
