So Steven Wells slagged off B&S and their fans (us, that is)? A word of advice and knowledge to you all, who think of writing an angry letter to NME: Don't do it, kids. Why, I hear you ask. Well, for a simple reason: By saying things like "Fuck off Wells, you know nothing and B&S are the best/ most important band in the world ever since The Smiths were here" you only strenghten his opinion about Sinisterians and B&S fans in general: That we really are ponces who feel so strongly about "our very own band" that no EVIL stuff should be written about them. And hey: I write stuff, interviews and reviews mostly, to this smallish indie/punk/metal/magazine. And I happen to know a few REAL journalists, people who actually get paid from doing that job rather than me, who only gets to keep the cd's I review and nothing else. And let me tell you, I've discussed this subject with them, and nothing is more rewarding than receiving an angry letter/ e-mail from someone who dislikes my text/opinions. Then I know I've caused some emotions. That's how it is, people, with every journalist, and that's what Wells only tried to do: to cause havoc. And remember this also: The journalist ALWAYS gets the final word. Always. You can send 1000 angry letters to NME, and in the office they can laugh at your angry rant and then... throw it into a wastebasket. They don't have to print it, you know. I know someone (maybe from Sinister ,perhaps?) will complain about Wells and his views to NME, and I know they'll print some of the letters in their next issue. And let me tell you, the staff at NME will have a field day thinking of ways to tell the person who wrote the letter to either fuck off or get himself/ herself a life. And I, I'm sorry to say, agree: It's only music, for fucks sake. Good music, yes, but still JUST music. And hey, think about yourself: You have no problem saying that europop is utter shite, and you can even name bands that are shit. You smirk whenever you notice that someone has slagged a band that's number one on your hate-list in some interview. But now, all of a sudden, you get furious just because YOUR band was laughed at. Hmmm... Me, personally, I love Wells' style of writing. It beams out FUCK YOU in this Stewart Home- type of way. Sinister: and your kitchen looks like hell

cripes. my kitchen is a terrible mess. therefore it is summer. dudes and dudettes, i was all set to tackle the t-shirt idea and fiona beat me to it, but it wasn't a race anyway and all t-shirt-related talk is good talk. i like the idea of having "sinister" on the front and "it's where we live" on the back (good on ya, jason, except for the bunnies business maybe. unless they are line drawings, which are neat, but also might look scary. and scary bunnies are bloody awful. oh god, i just had a flashback of the flaming lips concert, people in bunny suits... scary. ag. okay, it's okay. irrational phobia of people dressed up in big sweaty animal suits subsiding...) still more on t-shirts: i was going to go all kado style and write "sinister", etc. in magic marker, but i'm thinking it would be good to do it t-shirt transfer style, like put a graphic on the site so we can download it and print it off. alas, i'm no graphic artist. ideas and more ideas though. also, it would be cool too b/c even though the graphic would be low-resolution that in itself would reflect our Internet Presence. yar. and we could put it on any colour/style t-shirt then and not have to worry about too big/too small/too expensive/etc. f-u-n! also cool would be to just diy it and we would all have t-shirts saying roughly the same thing but in different fonts and styles. similar to all having picnics on the same day in different cities. yes, i am one with sinister: if it isn't raining i am having a picnic here in vancouver and all are welcome. except if you are dressed in a bunny suit. it will be in queen elizabeth park on saturday around 2. there will be a ghettoblaster blasting belle and sebastian and magnetic fields and arling&cameron and other good summer sounds. there will be picnic-related activites. in all reality, it'll be me with some cheese and a bottle of wine, but have no fear, submit to the picnic, climb the hill, submiiiit... alasdair "permanently sweaty and fact-based" cook said: many entertaining & useful things, among them: "What people used to eat." which sent my mind reeling into, like, the war of 1812 for some reason... also interesting to hear from c heil that "she's losing it" played on dateline nbc during a show on eating disorders. wha? uh. er. i'd love to meet the intern who (obviously) put forth that idea - "i've got the perfect song! no, really guys, listen, it's about this girl who's dealing with all this stuff and it's like, overwhelming, and..." them: "does it have a reference to bulemia?" do-gooder: "er, well..." thank you, barbara walters. well, anyway. harry hunt saddened me a bit with his inability-to-appreciate-beauty talk. but that will change - lethargy isn't really all that fundamental anyway. i mean look at fundamental christians - most of them snap out of it once they hit 18. this is *quite* fact-based. ahem. i mean, amen. er. but yeah, the response to beauty does not always have to be awe or gasping or wowing or running off and writing a poem about it. i mean, a lot of people wouldn't even notice the cherry blossoms - the observation itself is kind of an acknowledgement of beauty, whatever beauty is. the observation is emotional movement. i guess it's sad b/c of the mention of pointlessness and feeling that one can't do anything despite having lots of ideas. it's a bloody rough struggle to do things with ideas much of the time. but in many ways, it's sadder/more frustrating to not express these ideas. i guess it's about taking some kind of action, figuring that out like you might a math problem or a puzzle. also, if you've got a good idea, you have to get up the guts and share it (i'm also saying this to myself too, of course, being a person who tends to run off and write down pieces of poems that never get finished and should. blarg. ar. etc.) and argh, please, until june 5/6, no more blow-by-blow (especially negative) reviews of "fold your hands child..." b/c it's hard to take. (also, kind of an indication of not reading the list as i remember this being discussed not long ago.) well, maybe jarrod was joking. i don't know. but there's a line btwn discussing something and critiquing or reviewing something and sinister is more of a discussing place. i reckon. here is my point: t-shirts! deconstruct as you will. back to the neurosis, the 9-5, the sleep deprivation, lurve Robyn ===== I was reading the dictionary. Sinister: i can't believe they're going to give me a diploma

hello sinister, "hi-fi faggots" and the like. i was sitting in my room, reading martha stewart and listening to looper (geometrid), when i decided that maybe it was time to break out of my lurkdom shell and post, since i still have the opportunity for the next few days. i'm graduating from college on saturday. they're giving me a diploma for spending 4 years here and barely working. well, i actually worked pretty hard. i still don't think i deserve it, though. i'm worried i'll show up to the ceremony saturday morning, and when it's time to go up on stage and gather my symbolic peice of paper, they're going to tell me they made a mistake, and quickly usher me off the stage. ------------don't ask, don't tell-------------- as for the belle and sebastian content (which was more of a motivator for this post than my imminent graduation), i've been paying a decent amount of attention to the posts following the review of the new album by Jarrod, and i'm a little saddened by them for the most part. i'm not going to critique your posts, or comment on whether or not it's a good idea to post reviews of albums before they come out, but i had some things to say. basically, i've learned in the past that if i don't want to hear about an album before it comes out, i won't read any posts that begin with: "so i've heard the new album, and here's what i think of it," or something similar. so, keeping that in mind, i pretty much ignored Jarrod's post. while i've contemplated tracking down MP3s of FYHCYWLAP, i've opted not to, as my only experience with hearing an album before the release date resulted in much disappointment when i finally got my legal copy. (if any of you care, it was morrissey "maladjusted." got a taped copy from a friend 3 months before the album was released. lucky me. i keep it in my car now.) knowing my own weakness makes me disinclined to beat down on Jarrod for giving into the temptation, only to decide he didn't like the sound of it. if the new album sounds a lot like legal man, i might not like it either, whether it's been paid for or not doesn't matter. Johan's response to all of this was insightful, especially since i was skeptical of the quality of the MP3s Jarrod had downloaded. it's probably not so smart of me to continue this thread, but for the first time in months i actually felt like i had something to say about a thread on sinister. I think a lot of you may agree with what i've said and how i feel, and i know some of you may not. It's a good conversation to keep up, if only as a small portion of the normal bulk of emails. (which has really gone down to more of a trickle, wouldn't you say so?) a lot of people have posted some interesting ideas and opinions about discussion of unreleased material, the morality of acquiring said material, and reasons not to try and get your hands on something before the release date. a lot of these writings have actually influenced my choice not to try and hear the album early, and helped remind me to stick to that choice. --------------stereolab and VW-------------- and, on another note, someone asked about the new beetle vapor commercial and whether it's a stereolab song playing. i'm pretty sure i know the ad you're talking about, and knowing VW, it probably is stereolab. actually, i just checked their website (www.vw.com) and in the commercials section, they list all their commercials and the band and song for each. unfortunately they don't list the new beetle ads, but you might be best off checking back in the next week or so and they may have it up. -------------the end?------------------ well, that's all i've got to say. i'll be leaving school on sunday, getting home monday night, and hopefully i'll have internet access by the following monday. i can probably get away with using my father's computer for the interim, so i won't be missing any of my beloved sinister writings. but, since i can't post from my school account (and i'm not even sure how long that'll be active after i leave) this is goodbye for probably quite some time. if i have to leave for good, i'll just let you all know now that this has been a great 2 years of my life on this list. thank you honey for being a stern but fair (not to mention stunning and graceful) list mummy, and everybody who's ever given more than a passing glance to the garbage i've posted. including this. for the record, this post not only took longer than 15 minutes to write, it took closer to 45 minutes. well, back to martha stewart and reading about plastic dinnerware. the next time i post i'll be a college graduate. i hope. ;) -kerry "here i am, this is me. i am yours and everything about me, everything you see . . . if you only look hard enough." -tindersticks, "my sister" +----------------------------------------------------------------------+ +---+ Brought to you by the undead Sinister mailing list +---+ To send to the list mail sinister(a)missprint.org. hello all :) this is actually my first time posting anything here, so bear with me if i bring about any stupid subjects or boredom and stuff. just remember, i'm a beginner here! well..i guess i should say some stuff about myself. first of all, my name is Li (short for Lisa), i'm 16 years old and i live in NJ. (reading those last lines, i'm realizing i sound like i'm on a game-show or something.) i've been litsening to Belle & Sebastian for a while now, and i can not express how much i love there music :) i don't know too many people here who actually litsen to B & S except for 3 (including me), so not too much fun stuff goes on around here. in fact, i really never realized how popular Belle & Sebastian were until i was in this Old Navy clothing store. i was wearing a B&S t-shirt i got off Jeepster and some girl stopped me and asked me if i'd know about Looper. Sad to say..i haven't been able to find any of there music lately, but i'm looking! since i live in the USA (which i don't like too much.) it's hard for me to find other B&S albums. Sinister: The New Album: Don't Ask, Don't Tell Policy

Ah, the Backlash. It was inevitable, and indeed I knew it would come from the very first line of my previous email. Since rattling off that less than pleasant portrait of the forthcoming release from our Glaswegian heroes, I've been informed that there is some sort of "strict don't ask, don't tell policy" regarding opinions and reviews. As I'm a fairweather contributor to the list (nay, nevercontributor is more like it.. I think this last post was my very first!), I was unaware of the so called Policy, and I do apologize for breaking it. However, in hindsight, I cannot say that I at all regret writing the critique, as people have a right to know, fans & "disciples" included, whether the new release is genius or maddness - or, as I believe, somewhere in between. Alas, I fear that the masses will now stone me, in their own acid-laced writings to me, as if this were some sort of religious affair, and I was guilty of the worst blasphemy. Please, make up your own minds, and disregard my opinions, if you like. Whence the album hits the stores, it is certain that this list will be cluttered - chock full of every kind of review imaginable. I'd like to think that the Sinisterians here are intelligent folk, and open minded individuals who don't discredit or beat down the occassional challenge to conventional belief. Yes, Belle and Sebastian are a fan-fucking-tastic band. In my mind, the very best this planet now has to offer. And what of this album? In my mind, a small blip on an otherwise upward ascent and history of gold-tipped beauty. But again, that's just ONE opinion. Mine alone, thus far. If you're tremblingly afraid of what you might read in a pre-release review, (and if you read mine) and I've confirmed your fears, then again, I am sorry for ruining your day. And after all, 'tisn't Wicked Not To Care. Lastly, let me just say that Isobelle is awful. I've strapped on the headphones once again, bit into a plank of wood, and beared her songs once more for a solid re-evaluation. Tsk. Just who told her she could sing?? She's on far more songs on this album than any prior (and than her talent warrants), and her bits & pieces & duets & feature songs are all lackluster performances that are HUGELY tedious, trying, and TIRESOME. I don't know how YOU ALL feel about the Gentle Waves, but my ears quite simply bear that much abuse. I'll give credit where credit is due, and YES, perhaps she isn't a bad cellist, and perhaps she does add her weight in gold in the B&S magic, but I'll praise the day that keeps her vocals from off the records. If this album garners unflattering reviews for B&S, they will undoubtedly be indebted to her. But then, that's just one man's opinion. used on one of those new beetle ads. by the way, is the new vapor commerical done by stereolab? the song, not the advert, silly. ----------> Unless I'm thinking of the wrong car commercial (.01% chance), I'm sure that the band is Hooverphonic. I have it playing right now, the song with all of the funny beeping at the beginning. It's called "Renaissance Affair" off the album _Blue Wonder Power Milk_, which I recommend to anybody who is into electropop. Most of the stuff on the album is roughly comparable to "Sleep the Clock Around." Anyway, it seems that the people who make car commercials have been going through my CD collection. Uncool. Waaay uncool. 1. Can't you freakin' wait for the album? Less than a month already. Jumpin jesus on a pogo stick. a. Not considering the sound quality of your computer, and also noting that I *love* to hear new, rare, music on my computer; the sound quality of most mp3s and such suck. a.5. So, what referance points do you have for how the album should sound? If one is expecting an artist to produce 5 albums that are indecipherable from each other; go buy New Order or the S Club 7s. Incedentally, I'm a huge New Order fan, I like the similarities. When the variability in tone, melody, etc. is not that variable, all the subtleties and buried melodies jump out to reveal a more sublime experience of sound. Myself, I can't see much differance in the three previous albums; they're all a bunch of wildly opposite parts put together. Differant is not the question: goodness is. The songs don't sound the same. a.5. But I digress. b. That's not fair play. IMHO, downloading readily or almost readily available songs etc. from napster is i. not fair to the artist who you like enough to download, and would assumably thus support. Assuming they're not metallica; but that's a whole nother story. I guess case by case consideration should be made. In the internet age, there are reasons why new albums still have realase dates other than lawyers and advertising departments. The joy of getting a record you've waited for on the first available date. Not who hunts high and low enough. ii. the reason why napster and the like will be removed from popular culture, thus giving a lot more music power to commercial radio stations/sites and mall record stores. c. I know the Belles are not infallible perfect, whatever, musically or in any other way; so what I'm saying here is that yes, anyone can make a baaaad album. In the new album and here, i'm not interested in aural masterbation. Discussion and praise are not nessacarily masturbation. And no, I'm not giving any examples of this point, cos: i. I haven't heard the album. ii. I'm pissed off about the theory of the whole thing; I could give a rat's ass if someone doen't like a record. It's not the dislike factor, it's the way of going about it. ii.2. Fucking Dogmatic. iii. My examples are based on opinion rather than mucical notes. d. Do you have to *bitch* about it here. You sound like Rolling frickin' Stone Magazine. e. If you expect the worst from an album, you'll get it. e.2. I expect nothing other than a new album by a band a really dig. f. Listening and *hearing* are two different things. f.2. Change is *good*. f.3. Growth is *good*. f.4. Complacency and stagnation are *bad*. g. Unless you like only a narrow spectrum of music; intent must be taken into account on contemporary rock and roll music. Lo-Fi is cool. Why do you think that demos are sought after? Same with all those kids playing their geetars out of tune? Why do you think MTV unplugged was so popular? g.2. Re: Isobel's singing: see above, lo-fi is cool. Don't you think that mix was deliberate? g.3. I loved the Wrong Girl on all the live stuff. h. The first time I heard some of my favorite albums, I was *not* impressed to say the least. And I had either already bought them or somehow heard them again and again. i. Just cos you like it, doen't mean it's not any good. i.2. Just cos it's demanding doesn't mean it's no good. See above listening vs. hearing: Listen to a record a few times on your headphones. By working with it, youll be returned with a richer sound. j. This argument is unfocused and possibly contradictive; just trying to keep the thoughts in a legible format. k. I can defend all of what I have ranted about, but it's getting late and I must get up for work at the crack of dawn. Literally. l. I really just wanted to say go fuck off then. But that would have been unfocused, rude, and without backup. m. Just don't be that guy taking up space at the shows grooving to only the songs from the first album, then bitching about the new songs amd how they sold out after the first album in a jaded manner.It's just not cool anymore. n.
