Sinister: I've Heard the New Album, And It's....

...a letdown. Forgive me, my Belle & Sebastian brothers and sisters, for being the bearer of bad tidings, but I'm here to declare the music on the new album, "Fold Your Hands Child, You Walk Like A Peasant," as strange and vexing as its title. 'Tis true. For my money, and for my listening pleasure, this is by FAR the weakest and most demanding of Belle & Sebastian's collection of music. Oh, by the way, if you're wondering how I've already heard the entire album, it's available to download, in its full length glorylessness, on Napster.com. I'll admit that I was absolutely thrilled to discover the album there, waiting for me to tap a few keys and wait a few moments as it downloaded, but sorrow came, as Morrissey proclaimed, in the end. The first song I listened to was "Beyond the Sunrise," and much to my displeasure, it featured Isobelle. Now, don't get me wrong, I think Isobelle's pipes do just fine on "Is it Wicked.." and "The Gate," but beyond that I'm perplexed as to why they let her sing. I can't take her voice for very long. It's frail and it's weak, and it grates on the nerves. At times, her vocals strain to come through the speakers.. and when it does, I can't say that's a good thing. Anyway, "Beyond the Sunrise" is more like an Olden Ballad of Yore that explores Ancient Themes, and sounds more like a Biblical Folk Song than anything else. Next song I listened to was "Don't Leave the Lights On Baby," and this is far and away the best song on the album. For me, anyway. I'm sure you'll all have your say as to which of these rather disappointing songs is the "best," as you're all entitled to, indeed, but I think many of you will come to agree that this is the only genuine sparkler. Very moody song, groovy "Air" like melodies and keyboard. Rises to a wonderful chorus. "The Model" is a catchy little ditty that effectively uses the oft under appreciated harpsichord... in fact, one of the few songs in the pop anthology to use it at all, it seems. This is one of the other few songs on the album I enjoyed. For all the chatter and clatter behind "Chalet Lines," the song itself is mediocre by this band's usually fine standards. Something tells me a handful of you will be hoisting this song up to inflated proportions, claiming it gorgeous.. but.. ahem.. it AINT. =( "I Fought In A War" is dark and mysterious, with a very pretty riff and moving story - along the lines of "Stars of Track and Field," but fails to live up to the splendour of THAT song.. "Nice Day For A Sulk" is the sound of Stuart Murdoch masturbating musically. It's a throw-away. Too simple. Could've easily composed this one while in the loo, on the toilet, scratching his head for album filler. Some will say it's classic B&S, others will be smarter and say it's a waste of precious album space. "The Wrong Girl" and "Woman's Realm" are easy on the ears - pleasant enough to bear repeated listens.. yet I think you'll all agree that there's simply something missing this time around. The songs are all very well established in that wonderful B&S style, rife with stirring cello, delightful flute, occasional toy piano, and such.. but the magic is somehow absent.. the sounds just doesn't seem to jibe and jive on this effort. It's a disheartening thing to witness, the slight lapse of imagination and creative genius.. I did NOT go into this album with enormous expectations, nor do I think the band infallible. But by anyone's standards, this album is not the sound of a band that has reached their creative zenith. It is instead, the sound of a band shambling through songs that took either too long or too quick to create, and has either lost focus, or wanted to enjoy themsleves just throwing whatever together. It's not an easy listen, and it's not what you're all expecting. Many of you called "The Boy With the Arab Strap" a let down.. I can only cringe to think of what you'll dub this one. Good morning all, It's been a long time since posts, but I feel I need to show myself as I don't see many posts from my country on the list. Music news this morning: I hear Madison Avenue is no. 1 on the UK charts, first Australian No 1 since Men At Work back in 1983. Just call them teeny bopper dancy thangs, because they hate it. And we hate them and their song as it was shoved down our throats at every opportunity. I'm glad they're gone - maybe they'll move to the UK...... My love life: Just for anyone who remembers or cares about my Irish boy. He never called back. But I was rudely reminded of him when I got my phone bill this week. "who's mobile no is that?...." Oh. I have also been stood up by another guy since then - I must be really scarry. And expecting another stand up soon this week from a dutch/greek boy whom I have known for many months, but just managed to do the do last weekend. Maybe I might try girls again. B&S: I have suddenly become more fond of "Is it wicked not to care", where I was not fond of it at all before. Why do you think that happens to people? You buy an album and you have your favourites and songs that are just okay, and then you have new favourites and go round in circles til all are your favourites. Maybe I'm just dribbling shite - if I am just tell me and I'll stop. In response to juicy lucy My favourite word of all time... ever! comes from my least favourite of languages. The gutteral utterances of the Germanic tongue give me the willies, but its one redeeming feature is 'meerschweinchen'. The fact that it means 'guinea pig' is definitely in its favour, but just try saying it. Go on... Isn't it great? [] German is one of my favourite languages (besides Japanese), so I have to put in my two cents worth. "Krankenwagen" is definately my favourite german word. Literally meaning "sick wagon" or ambulance as it is better known. Biss. That will be all for now. It's too early in the morning to think. Also, to the person asking for lyrics, if you read the letter on the right hand side of the insert, its more or less the lyrics that Stuart and Stevie sing (although more dressed up). The letter on the left bears reference to "Loneliness..." and some problems the band were having with the mix. I still cannot see why that or Lord Anthony weren't on the single, but I guess they have either bigger plans (hopefully) or no plans at all for those two. I silently pray for a B-side... At the Elliott Smith show in DC the other day, the "Dog On Wheels" version of The State I Am In was played over the house PA right as Elliott took the stage. That was pretty neat. The next day, Tower Records was playing the Tigermilk version of the same song...hmmm? Does Ginko Biloba really work? Being exam week, I've been taking my vitamins for once and thats one of the ingredients. It feels like its work. I feel like I could bend spoons with my mental powers or something, though I'd settle for straight As (not likely)...a prayer for impressive marks across our board... Wouldn't it Be Nice? Sinister: unlikely stories mostly

hey kids i know this is a bit late now, but there was a GRATE column in the scotsman last friday about the links between bernard maclaverty, travis and struan. apparently they used to go round to his house and play chess with alasdair gray, or something. and it called b+s 'the oddest band in britain', which i guess makes a change from the 't***-est band in britain'... and talking of alasdair gray there were a few articles about him in the papers over the weekend, one of which mentioned the b+s book he's gonna be working on. apparently it'll be out by christmas, but seeing as his new book was supposed to have been published in 1989 i wouldn't hold yer breath! i was under the impression that it was going to be a music book, but from what i could make out it'll be a book of struan's lyrics illustrated by gray (i *might* be wrong about this...). i've never been too sure about this kinda thing. i've seen similar books by nick cave and lou reed, who both write wonderful lyrics, but when printed in book form they just don't have the same power as when combined with music. and much as i luv struan's words i'm worried that the same might happen with this book. lyrics are written to be sang with music and when they're printed it's not really the same...hopefully i'll be proved wrong and i am looking forward to seeing it, as any collaboration like this has got to be exciting. this is my first evah post to the list, by the way, after a long time lurking (like, since last october, or something). i've even been involved in the wonderful tape tree odyssey and everyting (mines the one with all the ivor cutler bits), but i just never got around to writing before. i guess i've always been a bit of a late developer...but i've loved reading yer posts all this time and i'm sure you'll make me welcome. my name's ian and i come from embra. in about three weeks i finish college forever, so like a lot of you i have bludy *loads* of work to do just now, but instead of doing it i'm sitting at this computer getting lost in a sinister world...i guess this *might* not be a good strategy...and 'legal man' comes out two days before my dissertation has to be in, so every time i think of how close it is to being released my heart drops cos it reminds me i've got so much to do. but when the album comes out i'll have finished college and i'll be able to lie back and listen to it in the sun (or the pissing rain - i'm in edinburgh after all...) thanks for reading - sorry if it was a bit spazzy, i was nervous...i'm sure i'll get better in time... see yah ian n ____________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Hi all: I am emerging from my lurking to tell you about a fun show that's happening in Seattle this Friday night, May 19th. It will feature performances by The I Live The Life Of A Movie Star Secret Hideout (a fine combo from Portland, very much in the vein of early K Records), Suretoss (Chris McFarlane of Jigsaw Records -- Eric's Trip meets Wolfie meets Boyracer), and Automat (er, that's my new project). Before the show and in between bands, we will be playing _Fold Your Hands Child, You Walk Like A Peasant_ through the PA, so if you haven't scored an advance copy or a tape dub, this is your big chance to hear the new B&S CD! The show is at the very suggestively-titled Honeyhole Sandwiches at 703 E. Pike St. Doors open at 7:30, music starts at 8, admission is very reasonable, all ages are admitted, and you'll be able to make it to the Mary Timony show at the I-Spy later that night with time to spare. Sinister: ugly and hopeless on pro-plus and vodka...

...not really, but you know when you suddenly notice a line in a song that you never realised was there before. so howdee doodee kids, haven't posted in a while, but the list's been so overflowing with content that i didn't feel i could keep up. played some tracks from fishyclap our night last thursday, seemed to go down pretty well except that i kept forgetting that i was supposed to be playing it and got carried away with uresei yatsura b-sides. thanks to any of you that turned up, although i didn't actually see many (any?) of you there. next kirrin island will be 30th may @ big hands manchester, with more famous five themed stuff and hopefully tracks from th badly drawn boy album. ok thats the blatant self-promotion over with, onto more serious matters: uniform~now i really would prefer a pink 60's stylee mini-dress with matching boots, but in all seriousness and for practicalities sake i think we should have t-shirts. but only if they're not like those godawful shapeless monstrosities that jeepster sees fit to inflict on us. i've got three b+s t-shirts and not a single one of them even nearly fits. raaaaaa also the pattern would have to be applied in such a way that my grandmothers reckless ironing skills couldn't remove / smudge it. and and and, i think this calls for a competition, someone needs to design the logo. probably shouldn't have mentioned that because it'll end up being my responsibility to sort it out, but if honey doesn't mind i'll oversee your design skills (but i should probably wait for permission first). i know lets see how much of your time i can waste ranting about t-shirts. umm... desperately want to talk about the album, but... musn't... suffice to say that my favourites are don't leave the light on, baby and the wrong girl, and chalet lines is giving me nightmares. and i spent the weekend learning the words just so i can sing along to stuff and prove to all the nasty pretentious b+s fans in manchester (you'd be surprised) that we really did get a copy. raaaa when does jo whiley normally show videos in her programme, will i have time to get back from tonights black box recorder gig before its on? will my flatmates be watching videos anyway so i can't watch th telly? stickers~speaking of stickers we collected in our youth, does anyone remember the care bears ones that used to have a furry one in each packet? the cool kids would always try and swap their shit cards for furry ones and think that you'd be taken in, but i wasn't fooled. so we could have special furry isobel-biker-jacket stickers!!! plea~ i've been collecting the tigger movie toys from mcdonalds (raaa corporate capitalist raaa etc) (but i like junk food) and i'm missing piglet, kanga and roo, they've stopped doing them now and i'm desperate to complete my collection, so if anyone can help... ok, enough already, i really should get down to some linear differential equations. sob. except to say 'swells - raaa' love and jaffa cakes, fiona 14 minutes 35 seconds - ha!! breaking the law, breaking the law!! +----------------------------------------------------------------------+ +---+ Brought to you by the undead Sinister mailing list +---+ To send to the list mail sinister(a)missprint.org.
