hello sinister, I was happy to read of ian: > i'll listen with joy, as i always do, to the opening bars of "sleep the clock around" with the whirly swirly music that makes my insides smile which i couldn't have put any better. though not an obvious star of a song, it has snuck into the favourites list in my mind. the fact that someone came up with the beauty of those little 'whoo' sounds gives me some kind of faith in... something. i went to the library today, which was an achievement as i've been on the last third of the book i'm reading since, erm, january. i got out 'the screwtape letters' by c.s lewis (who wrote the narnia books in case there's anyone that didn't read them) and, for some reason, a book about buddhism. it's not something i know anything about, i just got it out of interest, but i mention it because of a couple of things i rather liked - nothing we didn't know already, but it's nice to have it confirmed by an expert. it's talking about how you can get to some kind of higher state (you have to try and forget that terms like this have become comical!) basically on purpose through meditation, but also in more indirect ways... "the enjoyment of great works of art - of great poetry, music and painting - often helps to raise the level of consciousness. such enjoyment raises it if the works in question are truly great - if they really do issue from a higher state of consciousness in the artist himself - if they actually are an expression of a higher state of consciousness than we usually experience... "then there is association with spiritually minded people, especially those who are more spiritually advanced than ourselves... it is what is referred to again and again in Indian religious and spiritual literature as 'satsangh'. Hewwo, Isn't my subject line not at all grate? I should be in bed, it's a school night, and I go to bed at half nine, but not tonight. Tonight I will be naughty and post to sinister at ten past ten. I keep getting mistaken for a prefect in school, because of my B&S and Gentle Waves badges. Oops. Oh I went to record fair testerday and got Panic by the Smiths on vinyl, Cool. In RE today I made a silly billy of myself. Hmm. We were getting work experience lectures (in RE for some reason). Well, it all started when I was thinking about how someone on sinister said that they thought brothels were places where broth was given to homeless people. So I though, maybe, I could do my work experience in a homeless hostel, or soup kitchen, if I couldn't get a hospital or something cool. So I blurted out to the hard kid next to me "D'you think I could do work experience in a soup kitchen or a brothel or something". Then realised what I'd said. But by this time she'd told the teacher, so he prolly thinks I'm a little budding slut, and everyone was laughing, then I made it worse when I said that I'd been confused for a moment and thought it was a homeless place. Eeeeeee. On twee, and tweeness. A lot of people say I'm twee, but I still like to make dirty jokes (even if I don't know what they mean), and sometimes I hit people ( well, once and IT WAS SELF DEFENCE), and I went in a pub once. I also like Bunty and snails and owls and foxes and baby cats and knitting and running around in fields and playing pass the parcel for my fourteenth brithday party, and I still have dolls and they all have names, and I drink ribena and try to get my friends to play hopscotch, and wear knee high socks, though, and some people think that's pretty twee, though I just can't be any other way, though I have tried. I think twee is just being kind and nice, and not always hitting back, and trying to help people even if they're bad to you, and being quite sensitive, and being gentle and a bit of a wuss, but knowing when to stand up and fight at the right times. But maybe I'm completely wrong, or something. Oh yeah, and B&S ARE twee, and grate and that's why I love them to bits. Hugs, Jen Ps. it's funny that all this talk about 'selling out,' (which strikes me as sooo 1992) is occuring on so many lists i'm on, all in the same month. is it something about springtime? has the spirit of maximumrocknroll magazine invaded all of our little minds all at once? is it the rain? http://www.divinia.com/people/ian/sinister_eggers.htm do any of you read mcsweeneys.net? or that hyperbolically named book 'a heartbreaking work of staggering genius'? they're both sort of the work of mr. dave eggers, who used to make a really funny ironic-as-1990s-california zine here in the us; anyway, getting to the point: he recently wrote a really amazing thing about 'selling out' that was reposted to the Pavement mailing list, and i've web-posted it in tidy text form for any and all of you to read, if you care (url above). the basic point he makes is this: >What matters is that you do good work. What matters >is that you produce things that are true and will stand. i can't wait for the new b&s singles to come out, and will definitely be in line on the first day to buy both formats. and the album, too, a few weeks later. i don't know if this means i'm a sad, fawning fanboy with a pathological need for completist collectorism, but i DO know that b&s still make me ridiculously dance-alone-in-my-room happy to the core of my mopheaded little self - that's the important thing, i think. oh, and mr. Thanks to Ally for making us all climb the fence into Kelivingrove Park's bandstand because he didn't realise the gate was open at the other end <grin>. Perhaps some little bunnies or something? *Twee sign* I'm afraid I can't remember who the original idea was from, but I really like the idea of taking a "TWEE" sign to a B&S gig and holding it up at certain moments. Hello there tweenies I've just heard Legal Man again on Steve Lamacq (a fine character) and realised it is truly grate, with a capital b. On this twee thing, twee is what you want it to be, if you're sensitive, caring, loving, sincere, truthful, cute, sweet, nostalgic, happy sometimes, depressed sometimes, then you're twee. mostly you need that certain honest gleam in your eyes. I read somewhere once that the typical twee B&S fan "sits on his bed playing a battered acoustic guitar, smoking funny cigarettes." I finally checked out the Legal Man cover everyone has been jiving about and I think its great. A long time ago someone said that B&S make everything they do a look artsy. How true. Maybe its cause I'm a sucker for 60s kitsch, but I don't see how anyone can forsake a shot of Isobel looking hawd with her gat in her hand. The pic alone makes me want to buy the 12". Christa mentioned how the delay of the album has become a blessing in disguise, and I must agree. Now that it comes out in the early summer, we'll all be able to listen to it during our holidays and trips to the beach, which is surely the best time for a new album to be digested. God bless unforseen delays. I've been reading Woody Guthrie's autobiography Bound For Glory, and its really amazing. I highly recommend it to everyone interested in common folk and what music can do for the soul. I really would have liked to have met Mr. Guthrie cause I'd admire his passion for common folk and doing what feels natural and right. Alot of people said he was a lousy father and an errant husband, and I won't touch any of that, but I still think he really had his finger on the pulse of music and humanity. Steven Kado brought up Nation of Ulysees, and I must vouch that they rock(ed). I lost my copy of Plays Pretty For Baby a few months ago, which sucks cause its impossible to find now that its out of print. They really weren't the most talented band to come down the pike, but damn them if they didn't make up for it with lyrics like "'She wants a boy who'll laugh at everyone, who'll go with her like bullets in a gun..SHAKEDOWN!!!" and things like that. fuck this twee shit ...how dull. yesterday my friend jesse and i were throwing grapes at the flying rats in the park. filthy beasts those pigeons. although we never hit one we did make them abandon their silly looking courtship displays for a moment to avoid our airborne fruit. and then they ate the fruit we threw. so in a way we were feeding the pigeons. but feeding them violently. with force. grrrr. on to real things: i don;t think the legal man cover is that much of a departure from belle and sebastian covers of yore. where TBWTAS is the green cover and IYFS is the red cover and LLPJ is the pink cover this is the white cover. but the lettering is a different colour...which is the only problematic bit. i think it looks great. it'd be so good if B&S put out instrumental albums, that'd be so felt. yeah! hatcha! too bad we're talking about selling out. i mean, i was on the elvis costello list back when i was in highschool and every so often selling out would rear its ugly head and i mean...elvis costello is 50! selling out? i mean come on. thats just silly y'all. word. so yes, from one point of view, elvis sold out in 1978....can you imagine how tedious that list could be when that thread came up? ack. i went to a punk show the other day and i'm all hyped up on nation of ulysses now. the drummer cracked his hand open on his ride cymbal and bled everywhere. it was bouncing on the snare drum and soaking the carpet and he had to go to the hospital and get stiches after playing the show. and he bled all over his nation of ulysses t-shirt, which made it soo cool as a t-shirt. its the one where they're combing their hair in the mirror. woo. i'm thinking of removing my sweat glands. they're so uncouth and gross. i hate that since its summer i can't dance without shedding pounds of water. it spoils my good shirts and makes me have to wash things more. fucking sweat. its worse than pigeons. or hag eels. s t e v e n ! ! k a d o ! ! ! ! ! +----------------------------------------------------------------------+ +---+ Brought to you by the undead Sinister mailing list +---+ To send to the list mail sinister(a)missprint.org. Sinister: with a knife and a bike chain, la la la

Fellow sinners, First off: My recent buildup of thoughts containing actual B&S content and a subtle name-check have roused me from my (heretofore lurking) bedsit infamy. On the subject of smut colliding with twee etc. (and trying not to be too repetitive): Ive always first described the band to people who have never heard them by saying that they write excellent songs with lovely sounds filled with lyrics of hidden ire and often disguised cynicism and frustration. The juxtaposition of such is what attracted me to them in the first place and I think thats what makes them wonderful.* Thats also why I prefer Struans songsexactly for the way he combines angst with melody. (Reminds me that Stephin Merritt has a similar talent.) I dont find this complexity in Isobels songs and to a lesser degree in songs by other members of the band. S&M and Bible study may be appealing by themselves, but putting them together intrigues me much more. Tangent not meant to offend: spraying walls and marking territory It doesnt surprise me that Mr Murdoch got so angry at the journalists. (The use of cunting to get a triple word score did not shock me either.) Id probably react the same if I were in his position, but being a relatively apolitical girl, Im not. Though, I have been using the adjective/adverb "fucking" alot lately, so maybe we have something in common. About fucking time. Thinking about politicizing music reminded me of the existence of Rage Against the Machine, and then in further randomness I thought of a Beck interview quote that I cut out of an early '90's copy of Spin for laughs when I was but an impressionable alternative lass of fourteen. It went something like, Beck begins sarcastically whining, Oh, the tragedy and anguish, you just gotta Rage Against the Appliance, man. The toast is burning and you just gotta rip it out before it fills the house with smoke. Rage Against the Toaster. Memory like an elephant, mine. Im glad Stuart sprays walls in Glasgow for anyone with eyes in their head, and doesnt feel like he should have to go on about it to the music press to further his causes. Overarchingly setting their politics to music would discourage me from listening to B&S, I'm afraid. Crusading against Twee Hearing the word bandied about, twee has come to mean something pretty narrow to me. Any of the bands detractors that Ive heard always seem to cite their supposed tweeness as the first count against them and its obvious to me these naysayers arent really listening to the lyrics or theyd realize that twee doesnt do them justice. It might do the Gentle Waves justice, which is just fine for the Gentle Waves. There are lots of quaking skeletons in my indie-rock closet. My taste is very eclectic and in addition to stuff like Hefner and the Magnetic Fields that seems popular around here, I also have some items in my music collection that Im afraid would make some of you nauseous, or at least befuddled. Belle and Sebastian are a favorite, but theyre in mixed company in my record bin, shelved between 'Archie Bell and the Drells' and 'The Birthday Party.'
