Hello list members. Wipe that rice pudding off your face, its not becoming. Ive been on a bit of a soul-tip recently. I would have never got through my exams without Martha Reeves and the Vandellas screeching Quick sand at 2am to keep me awake. Ive noticed something in sixties soul, and that is funny rhymes with names. I have 2 so far, maybe someone could tell me a few more and I could compile a list. 1. I saw him in the evening and my heart stood still, someone told me that his name was BILL (Da Doo Ron Ron by the Ronettes) 2. and now were Going Steady, and I found out her real name is BETTY (Puddinn Tain by the Alley Cats) >I must say, the L*ndon p*cnic seems to be being organised with a touch more>continental flair and elan this time. No more hanging around outside tube>stations with the 16 year olds looking like we've all been stood up, oh no I have to say, Carsmile Steve, that last summer I, as 16-year old, found it quite fun standing nonchalantly against the railings outside Camden station in a shirt and tie looking for Belle and Sebastian badges out of the corner of my eye. And you do sound old, favouring some grimy pub for the top of Primrose Hill in the summertime. You can see right across London, and when you stumble down the hill to use the Ladies Toilet (or as me and another sinister vixen once did, roll down the hill) you often bump into little children playing in the playground next to it and have a horrific reality check in your drunken stupor. Jay was talking about Cafes in London. Magda recommends: Tactical on D'Arblay Street, W1, because its a bookshop inside, and theres something so splendid about being able to smoke whilst browsing the bookshelves. Its like youve been let loose in the library, the Librians swinging their pearls and throwing off their glasses, shouting Sod the books, dance in the Aisles! Smoke in the Aisles! Snog in the Aisles, my children!.....except, people generally just sit around that certain cafe looking serious. Theres Dianas Diner, round the corner from Neil street, which is the sort of place you long for on a Sunday morning, when your head hurts and your heart fills like its filled up with ash. Walls lined with signed, faded pictures of B-rate celebrities youve never heard of, and cheap milky tea. Yes Please. And Bar Italia, which I love, even if the hip cats say its naff to hang around there since Pulp name-checked it. Its a good place to take boys, unless youre particularly fond of your own reflection, as it is rather tempting to keep peeping at your hair on the mirror-lined walls. Oh, is that the time. Let me tell you the epic story of apple butter in a town nearish where I live. This town is called Wellesley. In Wellesley, the people really like their apple butter. In fact, they like their apple butter so much so that every September they hold an Apple Butter Festival. That's right, a festival devoted entirely to the consumption, appreciation and reverence of apple butter. In Wellesley, not only does apple butter count as a fruit, but it is also counted as a meat, vegetable, dairy and bread product. For the pious, the intake of apple butter can even be construed as fasting on Fridays, on the provision that it is not eaten in conjunction with any other foodstuffs. Sinister: It's just too heavy for a superman to lift

Thought I'd just throw in my suggestion to Miles' the list of the most "approachable" B&S songs. I disagree quite a bit, as you'll see (keep in mind that I've put it together like a tape to a friend who doesn't know anything about the band. So I'll leave out personal, obscure favourites like the hidden track on 3, 6, 9... and songs that really take time to grow) * Get Me Away From Here, I'm Dying - An obvious song on such a list. It's the song that most "non-B&S-people" seem to like, and instantly hummable. * The State I'm In - Because it's the best thing they've ever done. Simple as that. * Le Pastie - It's brilliant, but also has a heavier sound even twee-o-phobics can love. * Photo Jenny - One of the bands catchiest choruses. * Stars Of Track & Field - It was the first B&S song I heard. It worked perfectly well for me... * You're Just a Baby - A surprise choice perhaps, but I love this song, and It can be justified with the same reasons as Le Pastie. * The Boy Done Wrong Again - Only included if the recipient is a known admirer of Nick Drake ;) * Dylan In The Movies - My B&S favourite, next to ...State... * The Model - Because it's very representative of how the band sound. No other band could have made this tune and arrangement. * Dirty Dream #2 - Should make your friend feel good. If not, you're probably better off without him/her. Oh, and here's one to piss everybody off: * Chickfactor - I simply don't understand why so many of you slag it off. The piano/mellotron and strings on it is plain gorgeous, and I can't find anything wrong with the tune either. Now shoot me. That's just 11 suggestions from the top of my head (my cd's are at work. I have a personal office where I can play anything I want as loud as I want. Yes, I know I'm lucky...). I could go on all night, but I probably would've ended up with the their complete output (I made may own MD with my B&S favourites, in chronological order. I ran out of disc-time before I got to TBWTAS...) BTW, I saw Flaming Lips in Norway on thursday, and it was the best concert I've ever been to in my entire life (I've been to a few). I was never one of those drooling over "The Soft Bulletin", as I think it paled compared to Mercury Rev's "Deserter's Songs" (Those to albums was constantly compared in reviews here in Norway). But the gig was pure genius. The music is one thing, but what made it truly awesome was the video-art they showed behind the band. Picture this: The screen shows the Teletubbies bouncing around in slow motion, their happy sun rising on the horizon. The beautiful, eerie tones of "A Spoonful Weighs a Ton" sneaks out of the speakers: "And though they were sad/they rescued everyone They lifted up the sun/a spoonfull weighs a ton Being drunk on their plan/they lifted up the sun Yelling as hard as they can/the doubters all were stunned Heard louder than a gun/the sound they made was love" I don't know if I make any sense here, but it was genuinely moving. A wee bit scaring, hopeful, childish, wise, happy and heartbreakingly sad all at the same time. And it was not just this one song. Most video-art at concerts are just silly fractals or something that doesn't communicate with or enhance the music in any way. But this... Oh, my God... I was in fact glad I turned down the offer of a wee joint before the gig. It would've been too much. I also saw Mojave 3 (phew... beautiful), Lambchop (same), Yo La Tengo (nice enough), Ben Christophers (should've played the club-stage), St. Etienne (good, despite half-arsed attention from the audience), D'Angelo (what a talented guy) and many more. Well, I have to take a trip to dozey-land now. Bon soir tout le Monde, I've been trying to swear off the internet as much as possible because I don't like how it controls my life when I'm not working, so thats why I haven't posted in ages (not that anyone noticed, but I need to feel self-important for a spell). I kinda want to get back into real grit-and-dirt-and-trees-and-sky kind of life instead of what I'm picking up on my monitor, which is how I saw the past few months anyway. I took a few trips, bought a new car (one that driver does not do justice) and I feel alot better, but that might be the Ginseng talking. Anyway, I'm back for a night because I'm off and its raining so I can't be playing hockey. Will Salt (if that is his real name) asked us: << you'd think that the customers I'd come across would be intelligent people able to find their own books with the minimum of effort. Are they? What do you think? Of course bloody not. Every five minutes I have to stop what I'm doing and answer some stupid question, then take someone halfway across the library to find a book that they have walked past five times already. >> The customers in my record store, though this is probably expected due to their THC intake and naturally low-level intelligence, do the exact same thing. They bustle through the door, ram their mugs straight into my three feet of personal space and spout off "Do you have the Austrian Import of Jeff Beck's Blow by Blow on CD, cassette or LP? How about that American Bad-Ass Tune? How much is Papa Roach? You still sell Queen?", and so on and so forth, like a three-toothed gattling gun of inanity. These people must think record store employees are required to memorize the entire inventory on our days off. The very "special" ones will say something like "You don't carry Matthew Sweet? I just looked all through the M's and I didn't see it." Work retail long enough and you will come to question how we ever climbed out of the primordial cesspool to begin with. I can't add much to the Pink Floyd debate because I always stayed away from them until recently. Alot of my band members are Roger Waters' disciples, but I could never penetrate their mystique so I shied away. All this talk of Tony Doogan's inadequacies behind the mixing board has me a little upset I might add. I love the way TBTWAS was recorded: a touch muddy, a little reverb-y, extra warm...:sigh: IYFS and the new album seem way too cut and clean, but then again thats as much the band's fault as Tony's. They could have stepped in and said "We want this...we don't like how this is sounding...change that," but evidently they were happy. Engineers and Producers really have little or no say on indie projects because the emphasis is on creation and originality as opposed to perfection and sales. To assume that Tony was deviously imposing his own will upon B&S albums seems a bit far-fetched to me. The way that man records drums and vocals still amazes. No shows til 2001? Whats being done in the meantime? If all the members of B&S are visiting the states as they usually do each summer, they should let us know where they'll be in advance so we can welcome them and buy them drinks and dresses and cars and houses and such. Its to their benefit, trust me. I think hockey should become the favorite pastime of the Sinister Nation. Its fast, intricate, violent and it brings out the primal urges in everyone. A more violent football, a more fluid rugby. Well, I hope everyone is having a very nice summer and that they get away from the offices everyone now and again... Sinister: Fun with sharp objects

Hewwo, Mmmm, Jason went to T in the Park. I wonder, did he ever get to wave his 'Sinister is a bit freaky' sign at Stu D? Looper are good. They tell grate bedtime stories. Oh, oh, but I was being an undercover kid at the local grungers hangout. Well, not really undercover, because I stuck out like a belle and sebastian fan among grunger. Oh wait, that's what I was. So I don't know what made me go, but I went along, anyway, and everyone was in black and had mad eye make-up, and nirvana and satan is cool tee-shirts, and I was in the corner with flares and angels on my top, and then they all started laughing at me, and threatening to eat me and stuff, and I honestly thought they would, but they never, because this loud band came on, and started screaming 'fuck', and they all liked it and thought it was grate. But I wasn't that keen, but my friend who was with me, said that I wasn't allowed to read (since I'd brought Catcher in the Rye with me. Well, actually, it just sort of lives in my bag, in case I get bored and I need something to read) or she'd hit me, and believe me, I'm really really terrified of my friend. (Nice basis for a friendship, fear, isn't it?). Anyway, when it was over, we walked to get a bus home, but we ran into two of the hardest hard kids, who were drunk. So they shouted to us, and I said we should make a run for it, but my friend wouldn't so they ended up coming over to us, but here's the weirdest part, they were so drunk that they decided to like us. So in the end my friend started chatting to the most sober one, and I had a really drunk hard kids slobbering all over me, and telling me she was really sorry and how she secretly liked me (which was crap, she was just drunk). So I ended up buying her fanta juice to help her sober up, but it didn't work, she just spilled it all over her, (and me) and I ended up just finding her a seat and then making a run for it. But now I sort of wish I could have had a camera, because then I'd make sure she never gave me hassle again. That's my big long story. But I'm now the proud owner of a pair of age 5-6 fairy wings, which I've been wearing about glasgow. Which is where I went with my friend Ross, who does impressions of war veterans and orville. And I'm not scared of him because he's nice to me and he didn't make me take them off or anything. So that was good. I'm going to be the Fairy Godmother in a panto of Cinderella. I think they let me have the part, because I've already got the wings. But I wrote the panto. Not on purpose, I was only supposed to help, but no one else wanted to do any work on it. I'm going on holiday this Sunday, so I spray painted my old wee guitar, to take with me, so now it's an even bigger mess, but i sort of like it. I'm really excited, and I've packed already. How sad is that? Is there going to be another Glasgow picnic? I would organise one, but I'm rubbish at that sort of thing. Glasgow picnics are FUN. I'm going to go now. This mail is too long, but at least it passes the 15 minute rule. Is there a too long rule? If there was, this would probably break it. Oh well. As people were talking about Air being cool, ironic back-to-the-70s-cheese people, I thought I'd add my own 2p. I haven't listened to Moon Safari for ages, ever since I was playing it one day, and one of the songs set something nagging at the back of my mind. It sounded like ... I wasn't sure, but suddenly I realised ... the theme from "Last Of The Summer Wine"! Aaargh! Brought back far too many memories of not laughing along with my family on Sunday evenings. Fortunately, I managed to stop myself from smashing my stereo with whatever came to hand. The stereo stopped working by itself, anyway. Can't afford a new one. Have to make do with crap PC speakers ATM. Personal gripe: I work in a university library, so you'd think that the customers I'd come across would be intelligent people able to find their own books with the minimum of effort. Are they? What do you think? Of course bloody not. Every five minutes I have to stop what I'm doing and answer some stupid question, then take someone halfway across the library to find a book that they have walked past five times already. And because it's a library, we can't even listen to B+S while we work. (actually, at the moment we're trying to hide all the most commonly used books so the students all have to read different ones for a change. I am doomed to more stupid questions.) Incidentally, if any of you list people decide to come to Edinburgh University library and ask me a stupid question, you are welcome. I will immediately realise where you are coming from, roll up one trouser leg and give a secret handshake. Or something like that. Hell, I have to do something to amuse myself. Brian says his life is laughing children and zippers. Cripes! I knew this list was full of freaks, but isn't that a bit beyond the pale? Did you know that as late as the early 80s there was a fairly high-profile paedophilic lobby in the UK, campaigning for consensual sex between children and adults to be decriminalised? Several left-wing and libetarian figures lent their support to the cause. I found this out recently, looking through an old cuttings file and was rather taken aback at the pace of attitudinal change. The Russians have invented petrol powered boots! The unspeakable mindmonkey's identity is indeed intriguing. More intriguing still is that they have had to choose 'mindmonkey1' as their excite username. Someone has already nabbed 'mindmonkey'?? People used to talk about him in the 'earlier, funny' days of Sinister* (~) quite a lot, when they were taking a break from being earlier and funny. Following my disgust at being invited to kiss him with my mouth, it somehow seeped into my consciousness in about 1989 that Duffy was now to be taken seriously, and I made a note to buy the first Lilac Time album. But then I didn't and it was soon deleted and I refused to buy any later ones on the grounds that I had meant to buy the first one and I wasn't going to settle for some johnny-come-lately second or third one, even if they were better. I looked on the excellent http://www.gemm.com * for a second-hand copy recently but discovered that about $30 was the going price. There, admission of residual, bloodyminded, misplaced music snobbery over. I like the idea of Steve Kado refusing to talk about the Floyd anymore. For me, it's the tired old thing of pop fandom involving drawing fairly arbitary lines in the sand and saying 'no, I will not investigate this any further'. No matter how many times people tell me that 'Dark Side of the Moon' is a heavy influence on 'The Virgin Suicides' I won't be buying it. I want Air in my life but I don't want 1970s Pink Floyd. It's got a lot to do with where I perceive a fanbase to be. If all those boring 50 year olds and geeks at school tell me something's great I don't want to have anything to do with it. Unless there are a significant number of people I respect also like it. Call me childish. Call me a sheep. Call me a childish sheep. Just call me, OK? On a more reasoned point, I suppose I do categorise Radiohead and Pink Floyd as attempts at the epic and grandiose, and that immediately turns me off. Yes, Radiohead may well be concerned with representing the complexities of Thom Yorke's emotional existence, but he does it in such a way that just makes me feel embarrassed at the idea that someone might catch me listening to it and imagine that I'm 'feeling his pain'. If I want grand emotions on a record I'll listen to soul. And if I want an investigation of life's complexities I'll read a novel. Just save me from 'deep' indie music. Sinister: the childhood of a leader

i just finished reading the last story in jean paul sartre's the wall titled: the chilhood of a leader. it was disturbing like the others but i couldn't tell if the character Lucien was a reference to Hitler's childhood. what made the first impression was the Oediapus complex Lucien claimed to have in order to win the friendship of Berliac. I remember watching a documentary on Hitler in my high school history class and something was mentioned about him having that complex. Also i don't think Hitler was always anti semetic like Lucien. it doesn't really matter either way i suppose, but i just finished reading it and i'm a little curious. i know it's been out for a while now but has anyone heard the new e.p. from stereolab, the first of the microbe hunters? it's some of their weaker material in my opinion. Arse Biscuits Its Monday and me 'ead is in bits! Weekends and drinking and thinking really can mash your melon good and proper!! I'm stuck in a windowless garage of an office in Twickenham and its pissing down outside. I wanna get out of the city people! I have no news other than I saw my God son (God Son to be)for the first time, and its the first time I've ever felt a flicker of paternal love for a baby. I held him for a good few hours, and me and his father played it B&S and black box recorder full blast and the little neo-nate loved it....well he didn't cry....maybe we just couldn't hear him! So this broodiness is concerning me as thirty looms ever closer! I also met an ex girlfriend who I last spoke to 3 years ago.....that was a weird one.....and before genivieve quips...she looks nothing like isobel...She's gotten far too skinny! But that little meet up severly added to the melon mashing!!...Hmmmm! Hands up who else is tortured today! Bloody work. This band of people in Toronto are some of the best looking and dressed people the world over. Almost all of my friends have varying degree's in the arts/music and could talk to you for hours about influence and aesthetic. I've been to London and I wish I saw these beauties at Blow-Up London. There is also an excellent mixture of current fashion with old - the post-mod-ernists if you wish. We all "borrow" from cultures how boring would we be otherwise! I recently met someone from Chicago who spent a weekend with us and is now currently searching for a job in Toronto she loved the super community! I'd like to say a big hello to Ken who I had the pleasure of meeting on Friday at Vanity Fair. I promise the night will be huge by August! A huge promo will happen once d & I return from vacation!
