Hi you all! Is there anyone from Vic in the list? Billy Bragg and the Blokes are coming next week to Catalonia, to a music festival in Vic (Mercat de Música Viva): next Friday 15, 19h. We saw him some years ago, I'm afraid that it was the same year that B&S came to the BAM (in Barcelona), but I didn't know them yet (shame on me!)... But Billy was great! After the concert some people were waiting for him, and he was very kind to us: showing us a photo of his son... He's very nice! Sinister: HEADINGS, they're back

HELLO CALLER I was staffing reception yesterday, covering whilst the proper receptionist had her lunch and i took a phone call. Remembering my proper receptionist manners, I asked the caller who was calling before putting him through to the person he wanted to speak to. Imagine my surprise when the silky Irish tones at the other end of the line said, "it's Tom Paulin." I nearly fell off my chair, but i suppose now i'm in the high flying world of academe i should expect these things. It also led to me humming "ballad of the bootboys" all afternoon. Next week: "ello, it's Tony Parsons, whatcha, geezer etc" MUTATING SONGS For some reason whenever i'm singing "waiting for the moon to rise" to myself it mutates into "ease your feet into the sea". What can this mean? Apart from the fact that i should probably listen to more non-B&S music... COMPETITION What about a "Paint" painting competition. Using only the tatty colouring program in accessories, make a picture of the band on TOTP. Hmm, a little microsoft-centric I suppose. What's the equivilant program called in UNIX? Without provocation, he shouted, "<something> follow sinister people" (<something> sounded like it could be "racists" or possibly "spaceships") which seriously freaked me, but i managed to keep walking. When i turned to look back at him he was STARING at me, so I went hurridly on my way. Anyway, it's good to see that Peter Miller has moved to Oxford after all. DREAMS I can't help it, I keep having vaguely B&S related dreams. Last nite i was dreaming about the dog on wheels video and saying to the people who i was watching it with (possibly my mother), "ooh, my friend's grandad's in this video" but it didn't get to that bit (any of you who don't know which listee this refers to should search the archives). I suppose it must have been hard for him when his brother George ended up being the fifth Beatle despite being unable to play anything at all, except the big ponce and football. Very popular with the girls, though. As was Ringo, especially with Brummie lassies. Did you ever see the proto-video for 'Something' that they showed as part of the Anthology series? It had all the Beatles skipping around the countryside with their speshal friends. Paul and Linda play kiss chase with some lambs. George and Patti Boulaye lose themselves in each other's eyes, quite oblivious to a jealous God hatching his evil plans in the bushes. Even John and Yoko look quite sweet, resting their hair against a tree and listening to the flowers grow. It's a beautiful scene. But what's that noise puncturing the rural peace? Why it's Ringo and his bird Maureen tearing through the trees on a dirty great motorbike! NMEEEEAOWWWWWWW! Cracking stuff. That Paul quote about him not even being the best drummer in the Beatles was a joke! Y'know - the kind of witty off-the-cuff remark for which John was usually renowned. John had just made a fart joke that got a big laugh from Sir Reginald Snodgrass of the BBC and Paul's competitive streak was stirred. That was how the Beatles became so funny - that 'anything you can do I can do better' spirit of rivalry. Sometimes they'd get jokes sent over from Brian Wilson in America and that would inspire them too, although they wouldn't always get all the references. Poor old Brian went mad eventually, trying to come up with a punchline to some fantastically elaborate gag involving vegetables and Red Indians that would completely rewrite the book of comedy. Have you seen the book of comedy? It's fucking brilliant and has a whole chapter on how to laugh girls into bed. It doesn't tell you how to stop them laughing, though. Maybe that was in Brian Wilson's rewrite. Sadly, we'll never know. Ringo though - ace drummer. Listen to 'Rain'. Dooph dooph. And there are two from TBWTAS Is It wicked not to care, and Dirty Dream number 2 And One from FYHCYWLAP Wrong girl... There has to be more right?! Plus... Sinister: Intro

Hello to all the people who listen to Belle and Sebastian. Yipee, I've finally been given a voice, so I guess I should point out that I've arrived. I think you can also see me under the not-so-clever pseudonym of 'GavatSublime' in the Photo page of the parent site. This was taken at an outdoor party near Perth in June and was a damn fine way to spend an amazingly sunny weekend in Scotland!! I'm Gav, 31 in a few weeks time and got into Belle and Sebastian when I picked up a copy of the-then-just-released 'If You're Feeling Sinister' in the local library a few years ago. Quite what I was doing picking up a CD of a band I had never heard of I don't know nor even why the local library had it in stock, but that was the start of my love affair. Heh heh, in the last 7/8 years I've been more into dance music (specifically psychedelic trance) but, well, essentially B and S send shivers down my spine and I've been in love with the music ever since that first listen from the library. I used to be into loads of indie bands when I was younger and used to literally go to dozens of gigs in and around Glasgow, but I just generally go out trancing around the world whenever I can. Don't let that put you off though, as I don't really compare 'Indie' music with the dance music I listen to, I just like B and S as much as my psychedelic trance - only in a different way. I work for a (yawn) financial institution in Glasgow, read, go to the movies, restaurants and pop over to Paris quite a bit to see my g/f who is based there. Highlights this year, in all things, include 'Jesus' Son' (the movie), 'Fold Your Hands Child, You Walk Like A Peasant' (the album), Em (the person) and the birds and bees and all of we! Anyway, I hope that something here has made sense and remember, those who love repetitive beats aren't all bad!!! If I wasn't listening to 140 bpm I would probably make up a compilation with Gram Parsons/Flying Burrito Brothers, Helen Love, Delgados. JAMC, Janis Joplin et al on it. Bom to everyone. It seems slightly silly to argue on-line, especially on the list which is a community of like-minded people. Still, it can be fun to argue about the band which we all love. So I will answer your comments, then leave the subject alone. Firstly, about Isobel appearing fishyetc. Those words were written in jest, but of course it is difficult to gauge someones tone in e-mails. I think it would be stupid to bitch about her in a serious manner anyway. Its like trading insults in the playground. And the bands internal politics are there own business of course. Second guessing them is just a sort of parlour game for bored minds. Still, it shows we care about the band. And I believe its wrong to be too deferential to a band you like. Just because you are a fan, doesnt mean you renounce the right to criticise them. You dont bow to the mysterious forces which create the music, which is how I interpreted your comment (How would you know what her contribution is?). In fact, people on the list have discussed Isobels contribution quite frequently, particularly in the light of her offering on the latest album, Beyond the Sunrise. A lot of folk commented on the fact that it seemed to sit uncomfortably (at least initially) on the album, and perhaps Loneliness of the Middle Distance Runner should have been there instead. There was also a good review of the album in the Independent (or it might have been the Guardian) which made this same point, and argued that ICs songs could upset the unity of B and S albums (I used the phrase organic wholeness which you obviously thought was poncey, but it was at least accurate). Indeed, far from me plucking the topic of Isobels contribution to B and S out of the air, as it were, I think the issue plainly suggests itself. Isobel obviously feels that she has an artistic vision which cannot be expressed through the voice of Belle and Sebastian, or she would not be in two (count them) other bands of her own where she takes a more prominent role viz the song-writing. I dont believe it is petty indie empire building on her part, but a genuine desire to explore her own artistic voice. This brings us to your other interesting question about the nature of an individuals contribution to a band. You say that you might as well say Ringo spoiled the Beatles. I don't think he spoiled the Beatles, but I think most people would agree that his contribution to the band's output was overshadowed by the other members. When a journalist asked Paul McCartney if he thought Ringo was the best drummer in the world, he quickly replied I dont think hes the best drummer in the Beatles. He wasnt a particularly good drummer, and if youve heard his dismal musical offerings in the last few years, youll know hes not a good song-writer either. The fact is that there is rarely an even distribution of talent in a band. Lennon and McCartney (and to a lesser extent Harrison) gave the Beatles their distinctive sound, and history has judged that Lennon was probably the more inventive and talented songwriter of the band (Case for the prosecution: the entire Wings back catalogue). I think there are quite a few bands in which some members are key and others peripheral characters who have been drafted in, or are along for the ride because they are friends. Lee Mavers was almost certainly the creative force in the Las (prosecution exhibits: the on-going calamity that is the Cast back-catalogue). Some people in the collaborative effort which is a band are simply expendable. Would the Happy Mondays really be any different without Bez, the Jimi Hendrix Experience be significantly different without Noel Redding, Oasis any better or worse without their old drummer. There is no equality of talent in a band. To return to your Beatles point, Ringo brought his personality to the Beatles for sure. That may be important, but its only cosmetic. And after the years go past, and the screams of the obsessed fans die down, the cosmetic doesnt matter anymore: just the music itself. (Which is why the Spice Girls back catalogue will rot in the obscurity it deserves in ten years time, as the impressionable six to twelve year olds will no longer be there to buy their music (fooled by the cosmetics of their media presence and so-called personalities), which on its own is tawdry, formulaic crap. If it conveys any kind of joy to anyone in the future, it will only be as a piece of nostalgia. But the Spice Girls wont care, because they will already have their fortunes built from the piggy banks of the impressionable kids. Sorry, slight diversion there on a rant!) Having said that, I agree that there are some bands where the quality of the songs seems to transcend the talents of the individual members (whole more than the sum of the parts sort of thing) , and it would be stupid to isolate any single member as being the driving force. I think the Stone Roses would fall into this category, or the Pixies (Kim Deal and Joe Santiago made as much of a contribution to the bands sound as Francis Black), or the Who to give three examples. I suppose the idea of the pop band is quite strange in this respect. In most art forms, there is one person who is responsible for the work: the painter, the sculptor, the classical composer, the novelist, the architect, the playwright. But in a pop band, there seems to be a mixture: the single artist expressing his or her vision, and the group of artists collaborating to make the work together. No wonder groups often end up in court arguing about royalty cheques (any Spandau Ballet fans out there, hello?). Anyway, I think that is all I have to say on the matter. My fingers are sore from typing and I want to go and watch Ally McBeal because I enjoy hating it. If you have more to say and want to reply, please dont be too nasty (and I expect we have more common ground than we realise). Its o.k to disagree, and we should not lose sight of the fact that we are both having this discussion because we are devotees of the same band. Including a photo of a 7" vibrating thing that scares me and I don't know where to put (sic). I mean is it a "thing", or a "bodypart"? A person? A miniperson? They can make very good friends you know. MISSPRINT.ORG I've also done a little souping up of missprint.org, the source from which we all flow, so if you know anyone who might want to move a mailing list to somewhere with sexy attentive and "skilled" support staff that doesn't add snivelling adverts to each message, ask them to have a word with Miss Print. I just added a snivelling little advert to this mail, didn't I? Mr David Moore commented on the appearance of the spooky missprint.org "SS" logo on the Sinister pages. Just you wait, Mr Moore, Miss Print's sexy stormtroopers will kick you into shape. She's been busy, and some of you will have noticed that the search engine is a little souped up, making it easier to search for things now. So if you didn't have much luck before, try again. I was amazed to see that the collective Sinister nation had done 10,000 searches on the Sinister archives since February, presumably all for obscenities. You can now also search across all the music lists at missprint now, and although there aren't many yet, you'll see, you'll see. They won't be smiling when we're running the United Nations. Talking of united nations, congratulations to Jordi on the arrival of his Spanish B&S list, a bouncing little baby boy, little brother to her 3 year old Sinister Big Sister, who will make him jam sandwiches for school and even tie his laces. There's a link to it on the Sinister page now. I even got Aunt Sadie to help me write a hello message in Spanish to the new list from Sinister, but she's nearly as hopeless as me at it, and frankly, the results are untelligible. I'm really embarrassed. Como esta usted? My mobile phone's broken, in case anyone was thinking of ringing me. "Good thing" I hear you say. The irony of someone with M.E. having a mobile phone isn't lost on me, no. However! I may be off to Gay Paris next week, I'm being abducted. FLOWERS/COMPETITION Two related things. Do you remember when the band played Top Of The Pops and were attacked by Tom Jones, naked as the day he was born under his gorilla suit? Search for "taffy tosspot" in the Sinister search engine, and Peter Miller will tell you a tale. Do you remember how there were artificial flowers all over the stage and at the end the band threw them to the audience like Dana International? Actually I got a picture from UK TV from a kind person who sent them to the newsgroup, and it's at: http://www.missprint.org/sinister/concerts/TOTP.html I can't remember who it was who sent these. If you're listening, please get in touch, and say if it's ok for me to include it there. Anyway, we have (will have), preserved for you, one of the very flowers that the BBC provided for the stage set above. You can just about see them in that picture, by the drums. So what we need is a *competition* like the good old days when we used to invent B&S-related swear words in the "Sinister Profanothon", and you can be the proud owner of said flower. Could someone please invent a B&S-related competition, suitably stupid and vaguely insulting like the last ones, and collect entries? Then assemble a crack team of judges and judge it? If anyone wants to do this, please mail me, "not the list". I'll see if I can get some other prizes too, although it may be a little plastic drummer boy in a kilt worth two quid from a tacky Edinburgh tourist shop. He *won't* vibrate, no. Finally, the person who's sending the flower also did some quick interviews with a few people around that time, that didn't end up in the press as they should've, so he thought you might all like to see them, which is nice. It's great having Belle and Sebastian and S Club 7 on the same bill. TOTP used to be predictable so I started throwing in curveballs like Belle and Sebastian. People don't just like one sort of music unless they're really sad. You've got to take the family view - there's a 7-year-old, a misunderstood student and a middle-aged parent. I'm all of them. Which aspect of my personalities do Belle and Sebastian appeal to? They appeal to my liking of 60s pastiche! I hope this isn't their only performance on TOTP. The charts are dominated by pop and dance - in `rock' people tend to buy albums. TOTP should have bands who appeal to MM readers - we shouldn't exclude people. It should be universal and reflect that. If you watch it all the way through and you like all of it you need therapy! Hopefully, Belle and Sebastian will be one of the memorable things about TOTP. The stage is strewn with artificial flowers. Maybe there'll be an All You Need Is Love moment. Hopefully they [the flowers] have been washed since they were last used by Morrissey! How does TOTP compare to The Apocalypse Tube you played? "It's just painless. The Tube was painful because we had to play live. I thought The Tube was rubbish when we saw the show played back. I think TOTP's rubbish, but you can't slag them off too much. We're just monkeys." So you don't have complete control? "We're not in control at all! They put roses all over the stage and we're like `whatever'." You all looked nervous in rehearsal. "I think it was just the miming thing. We'll need a few drinks and try and make it look as if we're having a laugh. It'll be different when the audience is in and we'll have a laugh with them." Are you going to mime at future gigs? "Absolutely not. Next time we're on TOTP we'll try and sing live. You do get a buzz from playing live on TV and radio." Do you think you appeal to teenyboppers? "I dunno. I haven't got a scoobie. Maybe with this tune - it's a lively tune so if we're jumping about they'll be jumping about." Will Legal Man go up next week? "I think we'll disappear from sight - come on!" I went to the Pearl Jam/Sonic Youth concert and I wore my 'Study At Stow' shirt (how many times have you read something like this). A nice kid came up to me and expressed his disbelief at meeting a B&S fan in Pittsburgh. I concurred and we went on our merry way. So if you're reading this, get in touch and it was good to see a fan in these parts. All WHO fans might want to know that Eddie Vedder, Jim O'Rourke and others (Sonic Youth) played that unbelievable WHO song, 'Naked Eye' and closed with 'Baba O'Riley'. It was a good concert, particularly because Eddie Vedder didn't feel the need to tell us wants wrong with the world. soooo..... the summer's gone and errrr.... well i'm back with uni email and with sinster. in my infinite wisdom i managed not to unsubscribe in may and came back to 1100 posts. yes 1100!! and no, i haven't read them all, but tried to read a fair sample and have been keeping up for the last few days at least. what i did notice however, was that because my mail programme puts new mail in alphabetical order by the sender i could see just how many posts there were from each sender and it seems that in the absence of honey to regulate them some people have seen fit to post every day thinking that i want to read an update on their fascinating lives every single day, well without wanting to seem rude, i don't!! ok, enough discussion of the listand more discussion of me me me and how great i am and how interesting my life is. over the summer i managed not to go anywhere or do anything at all worthy of note except go to work and go to bed and then come back to uni to do my resits. i have absolutely no idea how these went or when i get my results as my tutor emailed me to tell me they would be available today and today i have been to the examinations office who tell me they haven't got all the results and i should ask my department when they will be available. raaaaaaaaaaaaa. sorry i didn't get to any picnics even the one i was so enthusiastic abuot at first, but you were sending stuff to this email account and i wasn't here to read it, but it sounds like everyone had a good time without me *sob* on listening to iyfs the other day i was shocked to discover that the evil mr murdoch is still singing about a poor freezing fox wandering lonely in the snow searching for something to eat. surely now that belle and sebastian are stars of the hit parade top 20 they can afford to spare a few morsels for a fox that is clearly in need. as if al this weren't bad enough though, the tale of cruelty goes on.... stuart is also watching a boy on a bike who is clearly lost, "going up.. going down... going nowhere" and he realises that "its not as if its fun," but does he stop him and give him directions, of course not, he chuckles to himself in the style of a 70s cartoon baddie and goes in search of babies from whom he can steal sweets. umm... went to see snatch the other night and my boyfriend decided that in it brad pitt looks like badly drawn boy, but i told him its just because he looks like a tramp. he agreed. we laughed. idles said >I decided she dreams of being in a nice hose, far away i laughed again and pictured a young girl trying to squeeze herself into garden tools, then i realised that she probably just craved a nice pair of tights with a good fit. well, its nice to be back, love and irn-bru, fiona, courting controversy.
