Surely it's only cos Lennon has been dead for 20 years and has like so many other dead musicians been idolised, that people think like that. People tend to remember musicians who die young in a positive light (how likely is it that if Kurt Cobain hadn't died that today Nirvana would be anything other than another Pearl Jam or that if Jim Morrison hadn't died that the Doors would be have ever been the subject of a major Hollywood film?). Remember that although the public perception of Lennon is of a humourous, peace loving hippy he was also self confessed wife beater, adulterer and drug abuser. Lennon was if anything the least productive member of the Beatles during the last 2 or 3 years of the band (arguably their most inventive period), spending too much time with Yoko Ono and dabbling increasingly in drugs, and had become less of an influence than Harrison by the time of Abbey Road (much of which was recorded in Lennon's absence). It's widely regarded that Lennon lost the 'control' he had had over the other 3 Beatles when Brian Epstein died and McCartney became the most influential member. We'll never know if Lennon would have made the equivalent of the Frog Chorus but how many artists of his generation make music of any note or credibility these days? For every Imagine or Jealous Guy there is a Revolution 9 or Across the Universe: Lennon was not infallible. >>Content<< Is it Hyndland Church Hall that Stuart M lived and the band rehearsed? holy shit and a half. i haven't posted here in a while... i moved from new jersey to st louis to attend college at webster university, but i've been lurking, and boy, has the list gotten exciting again. here's my two cents on some different debates/discussions going on in these parts: **Isobel/B&S Songwriting/Etc.** well, i don't know how the songs are written either, but i asked stuart david about it a while back when i did an interview w/ him (it's up at miss print dot com), and this is what he said: "Mostly with B&S someone writes a song and brings it in finished, and if whoever wrote it has any ideas for what the other instruments should play then the other instruments play that part. Otherwise everyone just plays whatever they want to. I think they've been doing things a bit different recently, but I haven't been there for a while." not the greatest explanation, but it clues us in a bit more. it all sounds good to me anyhow. i had asked him because i was simply curious how the band arranges the songs w/ all the various instruments. In terms of Beyond the Sunrise (which is one of my faves off the new album), I had originally thought it to be a Stevie song after reading something the band's manager said to Select magazine regarding Fishyclap. After I found out that it was written by Isobel, it made me look at the Gentle Waves in a more positive light. Though I liked the Gentle Waves CD already, I enjoy it much more for some reason. Both Legal Man and Fishyclap have become my favorite B&S records (replacing 3..6..9 and Tigermilk) because the band feels more confident, yet still as beautiful as before. The songwriting from all parties turned out very strong... I'm hoping Sarah comes up with some more songs in the future especially. Well, seeing how I'm going on a tangent... **good records I've gotten recently** i've gotten lots of grat music, new and old, this summer in my travels. these are some of my faves, and they are all highly recommended (though it varies in styles quite a bit): **Blonde Redhead "Melody of Certain Damaged Lemons" (my favorite record of the year so far. simply beautiful and menacing at the same time) **Sunshine Fix "Future History of..." (Bill from Olivia Tremor Control. Psychedelic slow jams and hoedowns) **Goldfinger Original Sound Track (indeed, James Bond Goldfinger) **The Good the Bad and the Ugly Soundtrack (Ennio Morricone. wild.) **Lee Hazlewood "Cowboy in Sweden" (Beyond "Beyond the Sunrise".) **Trans Am "Red Line" (robot skateboarding music) **Mouse on Mars - everything **Stereolab "First of the Microbe Hunters" (i recently started working at the Gap in the STL Galleria (!) and they played all 9 minutes of "Outer Bongolia" in the kids store! if only the kids could appreciate that title. to make things even more demented, they played hanson right afterwards.) **Boredoms "Vision Creation Newsun" (sun-worshipping psychedelic exotica) **Martin Denny "Exotica" (the man the boredoms pay tribute to. psychedelic in a totally different way- jungle cats & bird calls.) well, if you haven't all died from boredom due to this post, i'll stop now. if you have died of boredom, then I'll miss you. rest in peace. gracias and aloha, mike j PS- yoko is my favorite beatle +----------------------------------------------------------------------+ +---+ Brought to you by the undead Sinister mailing list +---+ To send to the list mail sinister(a)missprint.org. Ahh some corrections. It goes: L-O-V-E love, its coming back, its coming back, as opposed to: Eh, don't make me laugh, it's coming 'round, it's coming back. A little trick. If you look at the inside of the liner notes, on the messy desk there are 2 letters. One is some of the lyrics of the song, slightly different, but it's easy to pick out the differences. The other is something written to "Stevie" (I'm assuming Jackson). If you read it down. It's slightly incoherent, but it mentions something about "Middle distance runner." As for the Beatles: To quote my Dad after hearing "Band on the Run" by Wings, "They shot the wrong Beatle." That about sums it up. Its been said on the list by some people that they don't want to hear about politics, updates on peoples lives, or long drawn out threads. What then, might I ask, do you want? There is obviously a lack of B&S content due to their secretive ways. Personally, I would rather here about what's going on in someone's life than a gig report or comparisons of bands I have never heard of. Everyone needs somewhere to vent about what is bothering them or what's going on in there lives. It's like the scene in the all the movies where the housewife gets upset when her husband doesn't ask her how her day was. In my humble opinion, we should keep the list content diversified to suit all members likes and dislikes. I know I'm going to receive about 10 emails scolding me for being the insolent, naive child that I am. Atleast I will get responses. I always get more responses when I piss people off then when I amuse them. Hi there sinister, colleen .. you are right on ... the new Modest Mouse is a brilliant album (*the moon and antarctica*) ... dark, a bit eery and full of rythmn. they are tremendous lyricists too. similar sound as Built to Spill, i think. anyone else see *wonderland* and leave feeling like all their nerve endings were exposed? it's strange .. that a film about four days in the lives of a couple young people in london could have such an incredible impact. i saw it with a friend, and after it had finished we staggered in a daze to a near pub and sat at the counter, clutching our pints with both hands. neither of us could say much ... just gaze across at our reflections behind random bottles of gin and whiskey. i'd recommend the film, but be prepared for a melancholy evening. i'm knackered. too much science, too little exposure to fresh air. kendra +----------------------------------------------------------------------+ +---+ Brought to you by the undead Sinister mailing list +---+ To send to the list mail sinister(a)missprint.org. A good Eventide Sinisters and Sinisterettes I agree with the concept that many musicians posthumously reach the grand plateau of infamy. And yes, maybe had they remained on this mortal coil they may have meandered down the path of obscurity. But of course we will never know. Perhaps Mr Cobain might have had an illicit liaison with one of the Spices, or Lennon might have been the face of the Big Mac. One of life's mysteries n'est-ce pas, like the toast and butter thing. I have witnessed the sad sight of B&S CDs being sold off on the cheap by various record stores to make way for more putrid dancey stuff. I almost felt like buying another copy of 'Tigermilk' and *insisting* on paying the full price (oh almost typed another Captain Cliche then!) Still of course, they make cheap birthday presents for those friends who really need jumpleads attaching to their nipples to shock them out of their Smiths obsessions. Until the next time.... Ufff.If the time/quality ratio is still the standard to establish the good value of any message to this list of ours and Mama Miel,the hours of painstaking research which have preceded the next lines hopefully will redeem them from the most severe of courts out there. Following my first encounter with the one and only PF and its/his/her exchange with Ally Cook and others, I dived into the infinite and blue swimming pool of quotes which is the Web to learn better on Lloyd Cole with and without the Commotions, and perhaps with good luck, to puzzle out that enigma involving on Scouser fibs arriving to Spanish shores. Sorry to report that no answer came to bring any conclusions to the dilemma JB/KK-reference mentioned above.But in some page named 'Creative Noise' and edited by Brian B. ,post-grad at the University of Arizona, I found the suggestion of some thought-provoking link between Mr Cole and the very own Belle and Sebastian. Before posting any quote on the subject, fearing the irk of the crew who already had had a go at it,as it included some of the better-read scholars in this parish, I went and made good use of the SEARCH sinister services to check if already had been mentioned.Only some bridge over troubled waters joining Cole's and Lawrence's vocals could be remotely related , so I considered it was worth coming to it. Brian's these (I cannot find the web address, but if you type Lloyd Cole + Creative Noise on any search engine it would be easy enough to find...sorry about that)is based on an accurate definition of 'college' rock as the genre performed by liberal arts graduates/students, usually depicting their peers' existences in their lyrics,populated,however, with the literary and filmic references that those would recognise and appreciate, as other college graduates and would-be ones, will basically make up thir natural audiences.He claims Lloyd Cole, especially in his times with the Commotions as an early founder of such tradition, which would find its more remarkable exponent nowadays in Belle and Sebastian's works.And underlines the Scottishness of them all... An example of a fed-back, incestuous scene,maybe. I have missed the rescue of Headings perpetrated by Carsmile Steve,sorry if this becomes cumbersome and unreadable.Some people obviously enjoy the amount of free time at work to pen organised mails while they substitute their receptionist for a lark and talk to academic jet setters casually. Imagine the following scenario.Ring, ring on my colleague's desk while he has abandoned the Silicon Graphics for some paltry seconds.Being a not very mythomaniac person myself, I have found difficult to picture some name which would make my knees tremble with the doubt of holding up metaphorically the one at the other extreme of the line to ask him/her how that book was written, who is that person the song talks about, why that film had to end so sadly.But it would be a lifetime opportunity in certain cases...I don't know, I quite enjoyed the anecdote as the door to some surreal conversation between myself,Charles Smithson and Jeremy Irons in a telephonic remake of 'The French Lieutenant's wife'. Now you're starting to make sense! And therefore you can't exclude Isobel...or anyone else from the overall sound of the band....whether its a matter of overlaying a harmony or arranging strings or a drummer filling in with ghost beats it all goes to forming the overall sound. I'm not talking about Isobels songs (which I think are fine too)I'm talking about her overall input. So everyone lay off her because none of us ....none of us...really know anything about how the songs all come together. But I have to say in my honest opinion when isobel harmonises or when strings kick in, its a safe bet that its HER input into a song of Stuarts that has unquestionably added to it. Long live B & S.............ALL OF THEM!!!
