Sinister: A Dutiful Boy In A Bubbly Town

Holsten Export? That's of no importance at all. WHO IS SYLVIA? This Plath thing just rumbles on and on, like a steamroller. Possibly that's impressive. Sylvia Plath is not mentioned in the outstanding Go-Betweens song 'Karen'. It rhymes 'Standing by the counter' with 'all the problems that I encounter'. But it does not do so as well as one might hope. I shall save my response to the Plathites for Papercuts#5:Caleb's Legacy, where I think I should perhaps say something on this. Hm, perhaps I should use a pseudonym. BUYING THEIR ICE-CREAMS FROM SOMEONE ELSE The streets of these other towns still drift with people wheeling like seagulls. The waves of middle age lack glamour - I don't notice till I try to take a ton of pictures of them. The new familiar iconography diverts few observers. Bollard streets, and bins. I saw a teenager today in a Nirvana T-shirt. I calculated that this was something like seeing a teenager (say, 17) in a Smiths T in 1994. I loved the Smiths in 1994 and love them still, but in 1994 the Smiths on a teen would have looked a tad retro, as it would today. (In 1994 the kids wore... Nirvana T-shirts.) That is not, of course, a case against it. Far from it, possibly. Over a 50p refill I finished Franny & Zooey. It really is a bit of an oddball of a work. It's a funny thing how the two protagonists are both said to be gorgeous. That's always convenient. I must try it myself. What is it about the kids in the towns? Are they into heavy metal or something? I can't quite figure them out. The style seems to date back to the mid-90s or so. They never talked to me back then, anyway. OH! IT'S ANOTHER!! Who really blew me away was the geezer Peter Miller. He sought to return to 'goalmouth scrambles', and I thought: but there were such scrambles today, Miller, as Tottenham Hotspur were abjectly humbled by the mighty Stockport County. No? Oh. Never/Mind, as we used to say in the pre-retro days. Well, Miller went on. YOUR MAKE-UP NEEDS A SHAKE-UP >>> You just wait until I get round to reading that Sylvia Plath Diaries book with a segment of orange in my mouth, a plastic bag over my head and my belt round my neck, which inadvertently causes my trousers to fall down. Gosh, I don't know. I just don't know. How does SP relate, anyway, to your preference for the ugly and stupid? STANLEY WASN'T LIBERATED BY FRANCE, OR ANY OTHER REVOLUTION >>> Is there really someone called Stanley Fish? Oh, yes. He's proud of that name. They say that he was the model for David Lodge's character Morris (sp?) Zapp. And that was a long time ago. Fish has had an influence on me, you know - much more than I'd have expected in the days when Nirvana were around. I'D LIKE TO BE IN HISTORY But Miller went on. >>> Yes, I think non-fiction does become historical in a different way to fiction. Look at Edgar Allan Poe.... I think perhaps, generally speaking, considerations of entertainment are put to one side when non-fiction is being allotted its historical value, resulting in a surprisingly high chart placing for Virginia Woolf. This is just so thought-provoking that I don't know where to begin. Does anyone else? You know, a lot of people find VW very entertaining. Some folks find SP entertaining, too. Oranges or no. CAREY, GET OUT YOUR CATTLE I must return, quick as a green arrow, to that Mitchell thing. It moves me when on 'My Old Man' (1971) she sings 'Me and them lonesome blues / collide...'. But it doesn't move me cos of the lyric - far from it. The melody, the swooping delivery, the characteristic rich piano chords, have made my heart swim since I was a child. I have never known what she was singing. It devastated me again tonight, and I looked at the lyric sheet. And, well. The idea of 'colliding with the blues' is actually OK. But the rest of that chorus reeally doesn't have the poignancy it *ought* to have. On paper it just looks like dull bluesy standard stuff. So what I'm thinking is that we have here a version of Eliot's 'Objective Correlative' (1919), for which there was a disjunction, a disproportion between the emotion and the literary means by which it was expressed. In 'My Old Man' there's a disjunction between the banality of the lyric and the melancholy passions that its delivery inflames - to the point when it's best not to know what she's singing at all. Hm. Nobody mentioned *this* in THE MESSAGE (1999). I could be exaggerating the poverty of the lyric. But I still think that the dynamism of this song's melody is perhaps more striking than anything on, say, "Holiday" or "The Charm Of The Highway Strip", and that is saying something in my book. okay...i haven't posted for quite a while but i have to ,proudly no less, aadmit that i have been reading every single post everyday... insignificant fact but i just wanted to boast a bit. now,ahem... as it was more or less known,about 2 weeks ago i went to London with my boyfriend.There,i decided to check my email and wht was awaitong for me was a lovely unvitation from Jucy Lucy to meet her in a pub along with a few more sinister -and mischievious-people... After a long 'walk' around Tottenham Court Road area we finally found the place.It was really nice putting a few faces on names but unfortunately we didn't saty for long.I have to say that i was a bit scared in the first place-yes!i am being silly!- to meet people.I am not all that an active member of sinister in the way of knowing people from it or spending time on #sinister so i felt a bit weird... ANYWAY,one of the reasons we didn't saty was because my boyfriend-whom i love very very much but sometimes gets into weird mode-wasn't feeling very comfortable and he was tired and got grumpy.So.I personally was a bit guttered 'cos i really wanted to hung around more and get to actually talk to people...It was the first chance i had to meet quite a few people from the list and it didn't really work out all that well...(grumble grumble,mutter mutter....).So i want to apologise for being rude and leaving.I DIDN'T WANT TO GO!!!!!...sob sob.... 'Nough with that though... On another note:I DIDN'T GET A VALENTINE'S CARD!(that'll show me for not giving one in the first place...) Instead we had a massive argument-which at the time was horrible BUT i think it is working for the best. I went to #sinister the other day, and bumped into a greek member of the list under the nick torchy and since i don't have his email, i just want to say that :i'm sorry for disappearing so abruptly but a housemate knocked (and not kocked ) me offline and by the time i got back you were gone so sorry and i hope we talk again... It was nice seeing GHD again...haven't seen him for a long long time... hope you're well.i don't forget... hmmm,in my old age i get sentimental even though i'm horrible and don't keep in touch with people that matter...vel and G. don't be angry at me... i love you guys... My happy moment is that i have ordered 3 cds from amazon and i am awaiting for them...(madrugada,calexico and U2) OH!btw,as some of you may recall i did an essay about sinister land.I got the results back and it was graded ok(i wanted MOOOOOOORE!!).I got B11 out of A16. Now,i had promised to send it to people but,and i'm really really sorry, i don't remember if i did.If anyone is interested i will be happy to send it.It's a very personal essay.It's written in first person. I assume any Sylvia Plath/poetry fan would have done so. Don't you think that looking at Ted Hughes' last work makes the likes of 'Ariel' pale into insignificance? Whether Hughes was a bastard or not (and I'd bet money that the infidelities were not entirely unprovoked), you have to admit that Hughes' work is entirely more thoughtful, emotionally charged and perceptive than Plath's. Poems like 'Oijui' (sp?)and 'Epiphany' easily eclipse the likes of 'Daddy' (the most over-rated of Plath's poems) and 'Lady Lazarus', although maybe 'The Arrival of the Bee Box' comes close. Even compared to the likes of Seamus Heaney she tend to pale by comparison. Looks at 'Digging' and compare it to 'Ariel', doesn't Plath seem a little childish, lacking in perception, clumsey even. While I appreciate that Plath is a VERY good poet, I think it is a little odd to call her one of the most brilliant poets of the 20th Century. The only reason I can see that she has been awarded this status in so many people's eyes is because of her value in history... i.e. her marriage to Ted Hughes and subsequent suicide. As for Plath's self-centredness and arrogance. Do you not think that she could bge allowed to be a little self-centred given all that she went through in her life? If her pain was enough to make her constantly wish to commit suicide then I think it was probably more important than anyone elses. As for arrogance... it seems evident, through her poetry, if not her auto-biography (or whatever the hell it is), that she was totally self-depricating and lacking in self-worth, any arrogance was likely to have been a cover to prevent other people from noticing what was gonig on underneath. "...and of course everyone felt appropriately shocked and saddened by the women's affliction..." I like dog-ugly thick-as-pigshit birds myself. I like birds that are so thick their bulldog doesn't know which end of the wasp to chew. And vice versa. You just wait until I get round to reading that Sylvia Plath Diaries book with a segment of orange in my mouth, a plastic bag over my head and my belt round my neck, which inadvertently causes my trousers to fall down. You can get Deep Purple wallpaper! I've taken that advice and given up on the MFs now, but you can't say I didn't try. Can I take back that rude word I used about the Duke? I can? Good, it's the longest Nick Dastoor moment I've ever had. Thank you for that picture of Mr Dandycock, it made my day. PF talked about Lionel Trilling. Is there really someone called Stanley Fish? I like Mansfield Park, but I like Persuasion much better. There's at least one group called The Persuasions, but no group has ever called itself The Mansfield Parks. His non-fiction is brilliant and far-reaching, informative and entertaining, yet often in copies of The Complete Works of Edgar Allan Poe the non-fiction pages have been left uncut, and therefore unread, except by small insects. But then the non-fiction didn't more or less invent the modern thriller, thereby more or less engendering the entire film industry, television and the modern internet. Mind you, I can't get on with his science fiction at all. And everyone knows those "lend us a fiver" letters, which are non-fiction, and supremely dramatic. I think perhaps, generally speaking, considerations of entertainment are put to one side when non-fiction is being allotted its historical value, resulting in a surprisingly high chart placing for Virginia Woolf. Also I suspect that in Jane Austen's day there were plenty of fans going, "oh she's really lost the plot with Persuasion, really overdone the string arrangements, Mansfield Park was bad enough, those sax solos really should have set the alarm bells ringing, she ought to have split up straight after Sense and Sensibility when you could still hear the quill scratches - they ought to just stick out the Northanger Abbey demos." Sinister: Soft as Snow (and cold outside)

Well, for the first time in two years, it is snowing where I am (Seattle, WA). Well, it snowed last year, but it didn't stick in my part of the city. We're too close to the water, and its all concrete, or so I'm told. Its terribly depressing because winter is just cold when there is snow. Anyway, last night it started snowing, all slow at first, little flakes calmly floating down. Slowly they started to accumulate and before I knew it, the city was blanketed in white. I was so very excited that I nearly screamed like a girl, but instead I did laundry. Then I went outside and took pictures of the snow, it was so peaceful at 1am, but I fear there wasn't enough light (my camera kept yelling at me, but I took the shots anyway). Anyway, I got cold and went back in and retrieved my laundry. Ah, what a great feeling, warm, fresh from the dryer socks. Nothing better in the entire world if you ask me. Then today on my way to school, I saw a woman and her little girl making a snow mermaid. I think it was the first snow storm the girl had seen, she was so excited. I wish I could've made a snow man, but I had to goto class. I went back and took a picture of the snow creature after class. Anyway, I just wanted to make my strong feelings for snow known to the world. Despite the fact that I found out that I have a hole in the bottom of my shoe, and had to work for 8 hours today with one soaking wet foot, I still love it when it snows. Espesially when I get to go home to a semi-warm house, bundle up and fall asleep while listening to If You're Feeling Sinister (B&S content! :). Sinister: From Time Down To Mind, That Time Was Bad

SO LONG, LUCKY AVENUE Today's has-been's old hat is Ricky Lee Jones. Plus, Robert Johnson, and probably - well, how could it be otherwise? -'Robert' "Forster". OH! TO BE / LIKE EMILY!! I DON'T THINK I'LL GO BACK TO NEW JERSEY Mooro, or somebody - I *think* it was Mooro - talked about B&S recording that soundtrack. Again! He was right, though. You see, I gave up on the idea of getting Ally96 and The Care Bear to play on the soundtrack. The idea was class, but the money-men just weren't having it. I decided to ask this guitar player 'Stevie Jackson' instead. Watch this space. A PICTURE OF HER AT THE PYRAMIDS I have long maintained that fans of les Go-Betweens are not good at coming out of the woodwork and *justifying* their love. And this week has done little to change my mind. A little, but not that much. JESUS, JUST READ THE GODDAMN BOOK Does anyone read Salinger *other than* The Catcher in the Rye nowadays? I suppose the answer is yes: but me, I have taken a good old time, my own sour time you may say, getting round to it. Does Franny & Zooey have any fans? That's what I'd like to know. And is all this Glass-Family-Menagerie stuff a 'break' from Caulfield, or an 'extension' of it? I don't know - the first section of F&Z still lands us in that East-Coast college-kid world, but is that a set-up to be knocked down? There seems to be something a little stranger, a little more ambitious, about Salinger, than I'd quite managed fully to realize till now. Mainly, I didn't realize that the books were connected up as they are.
