The show is to raise awareness for mainman Stuart Murdoch's campaign to become Rector of Glasgow University. A source close to the band told NME.COM this afternoon (February 23) that students at the university were sent an e-mail telling them of the show, and that 200 tickets would be distributed n a first come, first served basis at the Boyd Orr lecture theatre from 1pm. Those tickets have now all gone. Tickets were only available to members of the university. It remains unclear exactly when the show will take place or whether the full band line-up will appear. The show is likely to take place before Wednesday (February 28), when the polling for Rector takes place. As reported earlier today (February 22) on NME.COM, Belle & Sebastian are planning more live shows for the spring, to coincide with a possible single release. Speaking about the possibility, Murdoch said: "There are two B&S singles that will definitely be out in late spring and we'll definitely tour those.... Sinister: the scenery and fish...they're bad

well, my oh my, what a traumatizing week. First i was notified that my email account was going going gone as the website with such a cool domain name (Z.COM) was closing. So i had to switch over... but Honey was so very nice and let me out of the nursery right away so here i am writing a fourth meaningless post. And then there is the sweet, funny, nice boy who tells us lowly first year theatre students what to do when ushering... i was beginning to have such a junior high school crush on him, and then i found out today that he is gay. I should've known. He dressed too well. That's about it for specific traumas, although general ones have just included homework, costume labs, lack of money and worries over the future. Jobs for the summer, applications and auditions for next year, the possibility of a trip to europe in september, which of course goes back to the lack of money which goes back to the jobs question.... Well, it has been a pleasant week in some aspects too. Tuesday my friend and i skipped our afternoon classes and went to Butchart gardens where the nice gatekeeper boy let us in for free. (It wasn't very busy.) So we wandered around and did fun things and took pictures and felt like tourists even though we live only a few miles away. And i've bought one of those lovely terra cotta rings that go around lightbulbs - you put them in your lamp and add a few drops of scented oil and presto.. my room smells lovely, like lavendar and spices. It disguises the musty dorm odor. I have made it a resolution to see B&S in concert one day in the next two years. So if they tour the US, i will take a bus and make a road trip out of it... if they tour canada i will be in seventh heaven but it's just simply not going to happen... most likely it will just be another reason to take my trip to europe. MORE CONTENT: i was out buying fabric today for a vest we have to make in costumes, and i was looking at the button rack and i found two lovely little BUS BUTTONS!!! They look just like the t-shirts! So that was my impulse buy for the day. Yesterday it was chocolate. But chocolate isn't really an impulse; it's a reflex. As for the obligatory "look at all the cool music i've been listening to" paragraph (hehe, just thought i'd add my 2cents to the hopefully-defunct music-snob debate), i've gotten really into hefner lately. Yesterday i played "we love the city" over and over. I love that song, and "Normal Molly". also liz phair and neutral milk hotel. and 3...6...9 seconds of light. 4 wonderful songs. especially le pastie de la bourgeoisie. oh dear. my friend alex found a page in the campus music review paper and cut out the "symptoms of music snobbery" article and handed it to me with the instructions to put it up on my wall. i think he gets tired of asking me what's in my discman and me telling him the name of a)some band he's never heard of... again, or b)belle & sebastian... again. well, that's it for me for now - time to go find my black clothes and head to the theatre. OK, let me just say this: the reason I don't like Coldplay isn't because they're popular, it's because I think their music's shit. I disliked them when I first heard them, and have ever since. If you disagree with me, who cares? You can listen to them, I won't. Let's face it, noone would seriously dislike a band just becuase they were in the charts, we're not indie music snobs here, as has been proven time and time again over the last 3 1/2 years. After all, B&S are a Top 20 band now, and we're not all going round burning their CDs because of it. I don't give a toss what label a band are on, or what they look like, or how many times they've appeared doing in-store appearances at HMV, so long as the songs are good - that's not too much to ask is it? It's getting like Manchester United fans complaining that the reason the rest of the country hates them is because we're jealous of their success, when really we just think they're arrogant and bad losers and their manager is a tosser. Anyway, in other news, I notice that NME.com have got another exclusive article about B&S on their site at the moment. Even if it is suspiciously similar to the Teletext interview from a few days ago... Two and a half hours is a bloody long film. Last night, I dreamt I was snogging a listee. No, I'm not going to tell you who. It was not Mark Casarotto. Spaced series two in less than twenty hours, this is good, this is very good. The trailers look amazing. Samantha Mumba can't dance and mimes on her records, and she isn't even pretty, so why isn't it me singing "Always come back to your love" on 'Steps 2 The Stars' and being a pop-miniceleb? No fair. Are you expecting funniness from this, this list message by Greg? Don't get too hopeful. It's two in the morning. Here are some amusing things, to make up for the lack of amusing things in the e-mail to come. Oh, there will be a few, perhaps even several, in the long and rambling text, but these things, these things immediately below, they are created by other people. By my calculations, over one thousand people did not mail this list to say that the Final Fantasy games were not shit. Guys, you're lovely and no doubt well-coiffured, but you know, I could probably find more than one in five hundred people who thought Toploader were not shit. What does this say about the Final Fantasy games? Yes, it says that they are worse than Toploader. Actually, since I've seen the webpages of obssessional FF fans, and they fill me with fear and terror, and because I'm easily tracable from 192.com and thus correspondingly You Know Where I Live, I'm going to drop this debate now. You can carry it on if you really really want to. In fact, it's been quite the Thursday for replying to Gregcomments. Steven Kado claimed he types things like "elements of a mass culture based on a set of aesthetics not a set of immutable values" after seventeen 'Swiss Cottage Sudberries' (6 parts vodka, one part Schweppes, two parts Red Bull, one part cucumbers). I believe his exact phrase was "hamfisted drunken rants". When I am drunk, I type things like "I am durnk", "No, actally I thikn I am sobe nw" and "Hum, Ishoulfd prbolably sleep". Conclusions - Monsigneur Kado is clever, Monsigneur Kado is especially clever when it comes to critiques of No Logo, Monsigneur Kado can hold his booze and also, Monsigneur Kado is modest. However, he is not as modest as Christiaaaaan, who daintily declined to directly praise his genetalia with: "Hopefully Puffy won't be around this time. He's always trying to grab my weiner. It's so annoying. I mean, he has his own! What's he need mine for?". His, Christiaaaaaan, are simply not as prettily shaped as yours. Why'd you think think Ms. 'Lo dumped him? And does anyone else reckon that J.Lo might well be the sister/wife/daughter/mother of a certain S.Lo, Skee to his friends. A classic one-hit wonder, of course, but "Holding On" by his Lo-ity is surprisingly tolerable. Two possibly overlapping people also mentioned Robot Wars, in a disparaging way. I can't really work up the energy to praise Robot Wars in the same way that I become suddenly energized to slam Final Fantasy games (especially those unavoidable, random, frequently-plot-incompatible, tiring, why-can't-I-see-them-approaching-on-the-fucking-screen, pointless, oh-did-I-mention-the-terrible-combat-system, boring, infight-background-graphics-not-normally-connected-by-anything-more-than-the -most tenous-thread-to-the-current-game-situation-type fights that are practically the only way to get to a half-tolerable experience level in FF7 and indeed virtually every other one of that terrible series. I really hate those. Other RPGs use little clever subquests for the same purpose, but I guess that takes game design effort...) so, I'll just say: Robot Wars is not for everyone. It is for silly little immature boys. I am a silly little immature boy. Thank you. (Listen to Iron Maiden bay-bee, with me...) 'Cor, this is getting a bit Isobel Lark, no? Frenzied defensiveness, non-existant insults... Next thing I'll be claiming you lot always wanted to kick me off the list, 'cos you knew Honey fancied me and were jealous or something.... Why is 'Fight Song' by Marilyn Manson at No.19 in the charts when Limp Bizkit goes to number one? It even features in that genuinely fab Mary Anne Hobbes Radio One Show ad....when are Radio One DJs going to walk through MY educational compound giving out free records? As long as its not bloody Jo Whiley. Is it Wiley or Whiley? Sudden adolescent-Sini-boy-type thought: If I ever get to meet a pwetty and suitably aged girl with a greater propensity to evil than myself, I'm like 90% sure I'll end up developing a desperate crush on her, which would in fact be the first desperate-type of my entire life, thus far, which isn't very impressive, come to think of it. This is probably a bad thing. I know I'd be very, very hesitant to go out with me, let alone someone with even less accord for others... That was originally relevant to the Ruvi debate, but was edited to remove all the lies, and hence lost aforementioned relevance. Just so you know... Rinaldo called Infinite Jest the only 1500 page book you'll want to read three times. Rinaldo is correct. He is not exagerrating, either. Sinisperines, please, read Infinite Jest. Rin (or others), is that line about "the only's child fascination with sibling incest" from I.J. or not? It's been stuck in my head all day, and I can't remember. Listening to Leonard Cohen makes me feel somehow dirty... I really shouldn't be liking things from The Past. It's childhood nostalgia, being seven and unambigously happy, watching WWF wrestling on mute while "Everybody Knows" or something by Joan Baez or The Doors sort of glided through the hi-fi, and in the background the grown-ups played advanced Dungeons and Dragons. They taught me to play it too, which is why I really do get terribly offended when someone says something like "crawl back to the computer engineering building in yr semen stained track suit dreaming of your next chance to listen to music about trolls and gobblins and shit with your other dandruff-y friends". Not at the slagging off of role-players, because if you've never been a serious D&D-er, you can't even /imagine/ how pathetic it can get, and anyway, I saw the light and stopped years ago. But it's quite a harmful stereotype, and one that it does no good to perpetuate. Perhaps it's no worse than me calling Stereophonics fans stupid or badly dressed, but outside of the confines of M.I.T/Milan fashion academies, no-one was ever beaten up on suspicion they were stupid or badly-dressed. Mainly, though, I just don't like the implication I have dandruff :P Y'know in #Sinister when people play ACRO? That's the best game ever, I'm thinking. HI!!! glasgow seems such a cool place. if there was anywhere in the world i could live it would be glasgow or new york, both cities just exude (sp?) a certain quality like if they were film stars they'd be errol flynn and clark gable, just the coolest you can possibly be. both have incredibly rich musical heritages, i suppose it's like billy connoly's theory about why certain cities are funny, the mix of races and cultures. manchester's jewish and irish populations, newcastle's scottish population, london's mix of everything. new york is, i suppose, just a huge mass of different cultures all alien to where they are (exvcept the native americans but i don't suppose you get many of them walkind down broadway or wall street). i have been to neither cities but i will have a manhattan loft sometime in the future (a boys gotta dream). actually i've heard that american tv shows use toronto to film in coz it looks more like chicago or new york than chicago or new york do!. i have been to toronto though. great place, all i can really remember though is the heat (40 degrees c) and the posters everywhere advertising the sex pistols reunion tour that rolled through a few days after i left (which i was bummed about as i was 16 and had just been introduced to punk through a friends brother) what was i talking about? oh yeah other places but home. i *need* to get out of the parental home, it's driving me nuts. i suppose thinking about moving out made me think about moving to glasgow or other cool places but i suppose newcastle in't that bad, it's pretty cool actually but very insular. edinburgh, 100 miles north, or leeds, 100 miles south, are the nearest civilisations of any real size or importance and although i do have friends there it's nigh on 20 quid for a bus or train ticket and even that is way out of my budget. god i'm rambling but i havent done it in ages so i'm allowed. the french have no word for double entendre, but they call a rugby player 'le rugbyman' so we're both to fault. by the way, who are wheatus? they are like, top 5 in the charts and i've never heard the song. and they seem like the kind of band i would like to have heard of (if that made any 1sense) i don't mind if i haven't heard the latest britney or steps offering but they seem like a proper band with proper instruments and they've even been in the NME so why no airplay? man, i'm campaigning for a band i've never heard, so i'll stop and campaign for a band i *have* heard... ...but i carnt think of anybody worth mentioning at the mo, 'cept belle and sebastian, heard of them?, i hear they're touring soon, you should all go see them (like there's any chance of *that* not happening) OOOOH thought of one, calexico. fantastic zoe charaktinou said she'd ordered the new album, have you got it yet? what's it like? mark and lard have been playing the new single constantly. i saw them at the leeds festival during the summer. after crowd surfing to the gloriously triumphant primal scream, who were second last to oasis on the final night, i shot off up the hill to the tiny little tent where the new bands played (partly to miss the *dire* oasis) and cought the first two songs calexico played but i had to leave coz the sweatline round my neck was actually around my waist and the soundcheck took forever and standing in a draughty tent wearing soaking clothes is not good for your health and i couldn't hear coz of my chattering teeth and i thought hypothermia was coming on, (but *only* those reasons) i went back to the campsite to get warmed up by the fire. i liked the irony of my choice of clothing that night, my bright red 'kill all hippies' t-shirt and a pair of huge mud-encrusted flares. somebody mentioned harry potter. if you havent read the books yed then do so now. the first book was reprinted with a more adult cover coz so many people were reading it on the train to work or whatever and were getting embarassed by the kids cover. i liked the touches that teletext gave the interview with stuart, stuff like 'ease your feet into the music news, page 563' and 'i could be dreaming of the charts, page 567' completely naff but funny all the same the meek shall inherit the earth. but then we'll sell if for a fortune, buy mars and rename it 'the fantabulously red planet of fun, fun and belle and sebastian'. bye pez* www.pez.com - the wonderful world of pez ;0) ivorytowers.8m.com - ivory towers records _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. +-------------------------------------------------------------------------+ +---+ Brought to you by the Sinister mailing list +---+ To send to the list mail sinister(a)missprint.org. Hey. You. Gorgeous. News news! What to say first? Hmmmmmmm. Oh whooo B&S content. Everyone's said all of this already but new singles/tours/shows/sex shows are all greatly appreciated. I mean, it has been a while. A long while. And for someone like me (and I get the sense there are lots of these on the list) who has never seen the band live, this is **1991 FLASHBACK tubular END 1991 FLASHBACK**. Sorry. I have french class in half an hour and I'm terrible in french and I'm turning in a paper (in french, whoa!) and it's just wretched. Seriously, it's awful. If it were in english it'd still be a total waste. I feel it necessary to put a different picture of me on the picture page. I mean, you can only be represented by a driver's license picture that was taken when you were 17 for so long. I think Ree* recently described me (and Walkn Steve, too, I think) as a combination indie rocker and all american boy. Well I'm going to put this rumor to rest by propagating it.** This is a very, very, good description of me. You people must understand that the scene here is Abercrombie, frat parties, and Natural Light (yummmmm). Now, obviously I don't adhere to these frightful trends (though I've been visited by the Nattie on occasion) but growing up in the Carolinas has had varying effects on me. So I'm very much a social mutt. Can't believe I was pigeon-holed so accurately. I had one other thing to say but my blanket (wrapped around me) is falling off and I must correct it. For some reason the heat shut off last night and I can see my breath in my room here. Not a good sign. Went to see Low night before last. Rad rad rad is all I can say. And for those of you wondering: No I did not fall in love with any restaurant/cafe girls (this week). No I am not trying to decide whether a girl has left her number for me on a reading list. Hello, I really ought to have posted days ago with this content, but I am lazy. And I wanted to read all the messages I haven't before posting. However, the timely nature now forces me to post prior to reading the messages... Regarding the B&S secret gig. Take it with a grain of salt. I ran into various members of Belle & Sebastian at last week's Low concert in New York. Stuart seemed to think it highly unlikely that they would even be back in Glasgow for the election itself. Recording the soundtrack to the mystery movie is taking much longer than they thought it would by the sound of things. Another point to consider, I asked Richard if there was any chance they'd play a secret gig or something since they were already in New York, and he said there was no chance, because they hadn't played in something like two years, and with all the recording they would not have time to practice. Consider, they were still in New York on Wednesday at midnight for certain, as Neil popped into IRC chat prior to going back to play a tambourine part. So for them to do a gig tonight, they would have had to rocket home to Glasgow yesterday, and spend all afternoon today jetlagged & practicing...and that's IF they finished the soundtrack Wednesday night or if they're taking a break or something. Maybe this is so important to the band that they will do it, but...well I'm skeptical. So if the gig doesn't happen, don't be too surprised. Anyway, other interesting content tidbits gleaned from talking to Stuart and Richard (mostly): Stuart did indeed once go to London mainly looking for Lawrence from Felt. The Loneliness of the Middle-Distance Runner's title is a reference to Alan Sillitoe's short story, but the lyrics aren't based off of it, though the mood is similar. The aforementioned soundtrack was originally slated to be an hour of the movie, with someone else doing the rest of the movie. However that fell through and now they're doing the entire 2 and a half hours of the movie. This is why recording has taken them so much longer than they thought. The soundtrack only has a few 'proper' songs (2 or 3 if memory serves) and a lot of it is filled with incidental music, etc. They're working closely with the mystery director of the movie in the recording of this (apparently why they went to New York). As in he's there to say things like "No, no, no, it's all wrong!" He probably never said that though. They're watching the movie as they record, so as to get the cues right. Some of the songs had been written beforehand and some of them were written in the studio. Also, they weren't certain that the soundtrack would see proper release. However, Matador & Jeepster were footing the bill for the hotel & the trip, so make your own conclusions. Oh, and they're really enjoying the recording process a lot by the sound of things. Whew! Crazy stuff. Well that's all I can report. And I have a million things to do so I must go. But potential Glasgow secret gig attendees, be ready for anything.
