There is going to be a 'secret' gig at Glasgow Uni this week by Belle and Sebastian to support Struan's rectorial campaign. Tickets are FREE. However there are only 200 tickets and you must be a matriculated student. But read it and weep: B&S gig in Glasgow this week. B&S, not Struan but B&S. Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. Hello, Do you remember the Australian classic "Men at work"? Well I'm a boy (or was it "boi"??!) at work at the moment, work, work work, too much work. If I get a girlfriend for every piece of work I have to do, then I'd be a slimey ladykiller now. I spent Valentines day going bowling, which was a surprisingly fun way of spending Valentines day, all the fun of throwing a 12LB ball into some pins that you imagine to be the groins of the boys who pull more girls than you, and that's before you start exploring jokes about fingers in holes and well oiled surfaces and wide splits. I think I should "spare" you from all these crap puns actually. Pickled Prince said in reply to JenOwl: ".... A girl phase....indeed! Sinister: A Fish in a Bow Tie?

On Monday I was walking home and I saw a full moon melting through the branches of a beech tree. Then I turned a corner past a house and realised it was the lit up clock face of a black church tower. It was beautiful. Trying to find some info about Staurt Murdoch's rectorial campaign I came across this website http://familyclan.net/stuart_robert_duke.htm about Murdoch Stuart, the Second Duke of Albany, who apparently ruled Scotland in the 14th century. Maybe Stuart Murdoch is trying to win back his ancestral right. Hopefully he won't meet the same sticky end as Murdoch Stuart, who was eventually executed by King James' own trained badger army*. The website seems to be part of a family tree, including such names as Duncan "Na-Adh" Campbell, who married Murdoch Stuart's sister, and is a direct ancestor of a certain Lady Isabell Campbell. Ah, the wheel has come a full circle. Isabell Campbell? Murdoch Stuart? Family Tree? This is too freaky. I'm probably going to go home now and see the face of Struan in a carrot. On our family tree, the most notable thing, apart from Uncle Billy who stole all the family silver and was disowned, is the inexplicable claim that "Ada Jackson married Fish". Whether this was one fish or lots I don't know, but it must have been a difficult wedding, with lots of fish in bow ties floundering around, and a crap speech from the best fish with lots of in fish jokes that no-one else understands. "So I was talking to this clam the other day...". You know, if my family tree goes back to Napoleon I think I'll change my name to Jones. Why oh why do I feel I must always leap into the fray when we have some controversy a-brewin'? I don't actually hear you asking for my two cents but I feel compelled to throw them in anyway. First off, in defense of Ruvi: No matter what you think of the ideas put forth in his little Valentine's message I think there is a quality present that is undeniable and therefore I cannot stand by and see it criticized. It ached and longed and was self-deprecating and honest and smart and genuinely quirky without jumping up and down saying, "ooh, I'm so eccentric, look at me." Besides, you don't really think he wants to get freaky with the dearly departed now, do you? As for the pretty girls != smart girls thing, I'm sorry but it is true in at least a limited sense. Exceptions will always exist but for people (boys and girls) with certain gifts like exceptional good looks, musical talent, athleticism, extreme wealth - whatever - a certain laziness often kicks in and they choose not to work so hard at other things thus allowing their brains, emotions, social conscience - whatever - to atrophy. God knows I would've studied harder if I didn't think good looks and charm would get me everything I want. Conversely, look at people who are naturally gifted at intellectual pursuits who hole up with books, computers and role-playing games and allow their social skills to wither away. Same principle. Okay, enough with the controversy, the rest is much more benign. Speaking of benign, how about that Coldplay? It strikes me that this debate is not very relevant over here in the states where we generally don't know much about the UK bands until they reach a certain level of success. After that, the indie cred issue becomes a bit pointless (or more so), and we have to simply evaluate them on the tunes. It seems that some are having a hard time with how the band's career is developing more than anything else. My opinion? I like them, the songs are pleasant and while not brilliant, are at least not embarrassingly dumb. I'm also always happy to see the return of mediocre musicianship. It's funny, I was talking with my roommates about how much Britpop (yeah, i guess we still say that sometimes) is starting to sound more like American indie. Probably the influence of Blur, who always talked about how much they love American indierock and were probably a big part of the bands coming up today's musical diet. Now some personal stuff: This dating business is rubbish. Can you believe I'll be 26 soon and I am only just now doing it for the first time? Until now it was always just end up in bed with someone and depending on how that goes or your mutual level of regret afterwards you start spending more time together (or you don't) and there you are with a girlfriend. This has always been the way it has been for me until now. Just recently I told a friend that I'd always been attracted to her and she said the same and now we're seeing a little more of each other but it's weird: we go out on dates complete with coming up with activities, one of us paying for the other and the walk home and kiss at the door. That's the weirdest part, the incremental physical intimacy thing. It's so awkward. I much prefer just sleeping with someone right away. I wouldn't mind hearing your perspectives on this sinister-inos, in fact I very much want to. Rinaldo Also, I don't remember who said it but whoever mentioned David Foster Wallace's Infinite Jest, I fully endorse that recommendation. Sinister: I knew you were historical from all the books I've read

Hello all What a strange day it's been. I am sick (the doc says it's all in me head, but i'm fine really). I saw the strangest outdoor ad on the way home. "Lew, Lara: Now at this address (etc)". A truly weird moment. I s'pose it's a law firm or something of the sort. And sure enough arriving home i find Laura's written to the list. And every time i happen upon the word 'sinister' in a book, i stop and kind of smile, which can be very distracting, in a way. The Murdoch/Campbell historical family tree connection was very amusing... I sometimes wish we had clans and other things of the sort here in brazil but then again "you can wish in one hand and spit in the other and see which fills up first". Am i the only one that can't resist singing TBWTAS (song not album) with all the lyrics in the booklet? with "when you've been inside" at the end of the first verse etc etc. And i gaze for hours at the mysteriously italicized lines on the fold your hands booklet. Few bands have booklets as fun as B&S. Not to mention the tigermilk and IYFS booklet-stories... I hear Teenage Fanclub might be coming down here this year which would be amazingly grate. Might the upcoming B&S tour include some south american dates? No, thought not. After reading Chapter 1 of Peter's Judy and the Dream of Horses, and thinking back to Belle Lettres and all that...i think someday B&S will have inspired so many short stories and poetry and little essays they could be collected in a book. Or a very nice website, anyway. Tomorrow I get time off Literature or some other class to go teach origami to some kindergartners. The fact that I do not know origami is something i'll hopefully somehow overcome. I have moments where I think of being a teacher, but then I remember how rotten I'd be at correcting things. Can anyone recommend me a good Kafka book? I think I have one in portuguese, but i'd much rather read it in english for the full effect. If no one suggest anything, I suppose i'll read The Trial. Sinister: Girl No. 12

Just now I saw a girl sitting next the road that goes through my campus with a bottle of water in her hand. She looked sad. I don't think she was waiting for a lift or she'd have been waiting at the car park and she was no-where near the bus stop. She certainly wasn't enjoying the sun because it was cold and windy and if she was enjoying being outside she would have looked happier. If she was just being depressed she could have done so inside where it is warm. I'm going back down the same path now, I'm not sure if she'll be there. I am scared of everything. good afternoon sinister, it's been a while... as i walked down the road to the bright orange haven of easy everything, i saw an accountants on sauchiehall street called...Peacock Johnston. hmm, methinks mr david has been getting inspiration from the world of accountancy and finance... it's been a funny old time for me lately. EvilRoommate moved out, so i know have a lovely warm room all to myself. it's so good, i can wander around in my pyjamas and eat coco pops in the afternoon and she won't moan at me and call me "a typical student". she's half ned anyway, so i'm not fussed...then two days ago i found out that one of my best friends (*ahem*) asked the guy i've liked for 5 months out and he said yes. now, i'm more bothered about that fact that she asked him out in the first place when she knew how much i like(d) him and she promised she wouldn't do anything about it, rather than the fact that ross is going out with someone. colour me gutted though. i am actually quite upset with her, despite telling her i wasn't (mind you, that was when she told me that she'd done nothing to encourage him and it was all a one way street coming from his direction.), but i dunno. ho hum, boys are strange and girls who are meant to be your friend are even stranger. had a dream about stuart murdoch in a kilt last night. swooning took place, even in my sleep. oh yeah, big hellos to the lovely colin!
