Hello, Writing long dissertations for a hobby is sad, even writing long dissertations not for a lobby is still sad, or it makes me sad anyway, that's why I'm er, writing this instead. Still, it beats marking geometry courseworks, and I'm taking my weekend off for a little karaoke and picnicy fun, oh yer, and let's hope it won't be raining on Saturday.. that's water, men or Geri Halliwell included. I wrote a poem once, inspired by a llovelly millkmaid but I don't think you can use it anymore cos some cheeky band stole it and made it a chart topper, it went something like this.. Picnic day tomorrow. And in an amazing turn-up for the books, the weather forecast is that it's going to be sunny! And warm (11 degrees)! Which means we might not adjourn to the pub until, ooh, 5 o'clock... Of course, we'll drink a toast to all the Sinisterines in other parts of the world who can't make it. And then we'll drink a toast to Sinisterines who could make it. And then we'll drink a toast to non-Sinisterines, whether they could make it or not. And then we'll drink a toast to anyone we haven't drunk a toast to yet. And then we'll just drink. People who will be going tomorrow: for those who don't know, it was decided a couple of years ago that, so that we could recognise other Sinisterines, we should each wear a (preferably B&S) badge upside-down for identification purposes. People who haven't been to a picnic before should also be aware that it's traditional to turn up in fancy dress. Unfortunately, last weekend was the best weekend of the year for me, since I went with two coachloads of students from around the country to Holland for the weekend for a korfball tournament, from which I'm still recovering (getting back from the party at 5am, and starting drinking again, despite having to get up 2 hours later to start the day's matches...). Anyone who isn't from the UK won't have a clue what it means to Mint! an entire Sports Hall full of sleeping people en masse from the balcony at 5.30 in the morning, but believe me, it's fun. Anyone who isn't from the UK might not know what it's like to spend an entire week hungover, but believe me, it's not fun. To be fair, I have had a superb week, but this wasn't it. In other news, my life has been infinitely improved now that we know which hospital Isobel was born in. I would also like to be the first to boast about having received an advance copy of the new single "Eric and Tarquin", and how great it is. Unforunately, I'd be lying. Hello the land of SiNiSteR! It's been a while... (I haven't smiled...) and many things have happened... things that I'm sure you'd like to know but I won't tell you anyway... mmm unless you beg... nicely... and with the proper puppy-indie-eyes... Well, the sinister picnic's on this weekend... I was supposed to be there but alas I won't make it... First Sinister Picnic of the YeaR... I keep reading about kites and other weird things like that but anyway, no comment... don't you know that all you need is vodka bottles in your handbags? But instead of coming to London in May, I'm coming in June so I can go and see the Bell(i)es in Glasgow both nights! And then we're having a sinister picnic in London on the 23rd (is that right Mr Marvoloso sir?) June and it's at GREENWICH this time... Talking about Glasgow... there's been a lot of talk lately about this glaswegian beat combo, the Camera Obscura... mmm So, let's take things from the start... David Howie said: My comments on Camera Obscura were unjustified as well seeing that Ive only heard three of their songs; as were my comments on Baxendale (although quite why youd want to). However, I do stand by my opinion that they dont sound that much like B&S (more like Felt, High Llamas, Idlewild at their poppiest perhaps) but that is no excuse for jumping on your comments; Camera Obscura have been around for a few years, their infuences vary... I'd say they're quite sixties, influenced by Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra, and yes, Felt too, but really High Llammas, and Idlewild?? they had two singles out, "park and ride" and "your sound" a while ago... and they've spent the last year or so recording an album... there are connections with B&S though... as Stuart (don't you just hate it when people call him Struan? it's just so awful and bad taste) produced the single for them, called "eighties fan" and it's out next month, mid June or something... its got a real sixties wall of sound feel and stuart arranged strings for it. The B-sides are "shine like a new pin" and "let's go bowling". I think that Mr Murdoch is also playing accoustic guitar in "eighties fan", but I can't say for sure...the album's out later this year.... other AffiNitiEs... Richard from B&S drummed for CO for a year... he's actually on their second single... Then Mr Danny Farrell went ahead and said: Camera Obscura, in my drunken state, did sound like B&S not a hugely like them but there was a resemblance, not in that they were scottish but because they sounded very much the "twee" band. Not in my very worst (best) drunken state I'd say that Camera Obscura sounded like the "twee" band... they're not hopping around like little happy bunnies in green fields and they hate daisies indeed... they may sound mellow in some songs, but that doesn't make them twee, does it? like you wouldn't call the Clientele a twee band, or Hopkirk and Lee, or the Montgolfier Bros, would you? unless mellow=twee nowadays... Marc Bots then said: Camera Obscura is an old dutch book by a guy called Hildebrand. It has a number of stories in it, situated somewhere in the end of the 19th century. I had to read some parts of it for my exams (seven years ago already, aargh), and found it particulary boring. I don't know if it has anything to do with the band, but at least you all may learned something today. Yes, we learnt something today... the band didn't take its name from monsieur Hildebrand I'm afraid, nor from monsier Vaneguem... The name comes from the prototype camera, where images were inverted onto a screen... simple as that... Bore da, buongiorno, guten morgen, and so on What a good morning. I am happy and I don't have to be in school until ten so I have time to write this post that I've been meaning to make. First off, a little B&S information. I did some babysitting a while back. This nice family in my neighborhood has a lovely little girl named Samantha, only a few months old when I babysat for her. Now the only way I could get her to sleep was to let her lie on me while a sat with terrible posture in a rocking chair (I got lots of backaches) and sang "Judy and the Dream of Horses" to her. No joke. That was the only way I found to get her to stop crying and sleep. The youngest belle and sebastian fan? Now the reason I'd been meaning to post was this: my listcrush and I have more than hit it off. I love him and he's coming to visit me this summer. Now we've had previous experiences with having similar dreams, or prophetic dreams, claivoyant dreams, or whichever you'd like to call them. Now we've had nearly the same dream again, which involved us both being in my bedroom. When he told me about it he knew what my room looked like, despite the fact that he's never seen it. He even knew the placement of the windows and furniture. I had the same dream, so it's as if he was really there. Hmmmmm... Now I have a brief request. I've just finished all the required work for my art course, so now I have the rest of the year to do what I want with the supplies they'll give me. I want to do an oil painting based on a passage in a good book or story that is descriptive as hell. I suppose after saying that I've nearly resigned myself to catcher in the rye, but if anyone knows of any good passages begging to be painted, I'd appreciate it ever so much if you could tell me. I guess I could make a mixed tape if you want a trade. Well, that's all for now. Sinister: Picnics on Primrose Hill are cool

I'm getting all nausous with excitement about the picnic... well, it could be more due to the fact that I drank after taking paracetomol last night, but that's a different matter. I have checked train times, bought my picnic food (apart from the ribena... which I need to dilute :)), got more film for my camera and am all but ready. I can't believe there hasn't been more, I'm like a kangeroo on LSD. I'm a little worried though, reports of previous picnics seem to involve everyone having massive fun. I'm just not sure I'm capable of it. I think I'll just end up sitting on the glass talking bollocks while people fly kites and play football and staple each others ears to trees, or what ever you people do at those gatherings. Oh, and I don't like football much *covers head and waits for a response...*. I was sitting in 19th Century English class today and, while we we studying the poetry of some biggotted, ignorant asshole, I began to feel sad that the wonderful poetry that is B&S lyrics will never be included in a poetry anthology. Can we not count "On a beach tree rudely carved NC loved me Why did she do is was she bored or pushed" or "Mayfly woken up when skies are clear I don't mind you coming near Keep me company till she comes along" or even "A mile and a half on a bus takes a long time" The young Mr Feguson said... as some of the best poetry ever written? Does it not represent, honestly, intellegently and beautifully, the time we live in? Ah, but I'll end my rant now. <is radio one not a bit dull? they have just played that bloody missy eleot song for about the billionth time today. > Well, my friend, it seems that listening to any comercial radio station in non-London Britain during the day is likely to disappoint. Apparently in America they are so concerned with the hermoginistion of the airwaves that they're licensing pirate stations. Not bad really, considering they have the great luminary G.W at the head of their country, hope they do something like that here. I suggest that the only time radio 1 is really worth the effort it take to listen to it is around 11p.m. on weekdays... for Johnny Peel. So anyway, I'll go and think about the picnic. To anyone who is going to the picnic... please try not to have too much fun on my behalf. We could all sit round and play trivial pursuits and eat spam. Ah lovely spam. Sinister: First Screamings from the Colonies.

Kia Ora, another first post, yep another isolated soul in envy of picnics and group shenanigans. To make things worse it is officially the rainy season where I am living, the perfect time for the reading of lists and not leaving the house. Cos when it rains it pours. I got to meet the Prime Minister of New Zealand today, she came to the school I go to, I wore a t-shirt that said "In hock up to my eyeballs", in the vain hope that she would go home and abolish the student loan scheme, but I'm not so sure that she even saw it, she did seem to be awed by the flashing lights in the recording studio though, (in our hearts we are all children).She also farted during the speech by the Kaumatua. A quick word on the origins of Camera Obscura, and forgive me if I am stating the bleeding obvious, but it is simply a pin-hole camera.(if I am stating the obvious lets put it down to the fact that I'm fresh from the nursery and still in nappies). I wish I could be there for the London picnic maybe someone can let a balloon be taken by the wind in honor of kindred spirits in isolation. Just a quick answer to a quick question: Camera Obscura is an old dutch book by a guy called Hildebrand. It has a number of stories in it, situated somewhere in the end of the 19th century. I had to read some parts of it for my exams (seven years ago already, aargh), and found it particulary boring. I don't know if it has anything to do with the band, but at least you all may learned something today. Yesterday I had to sit inside all day and the weather was great, today I have to sit inside all day and the weather sucks.
