Peter Miller did not not reply to the questions because he was being evasive. He did not reply because he was not yet ready to Report Back. I think that this has to be cleared up before any more damage is done to his name. I mean, 'Miller' - that's bad enough. Alice Virginia (what a name!) said that she was living in the wrong place and Long Island was dull. (I don't know what 'lipliner' is. I am translating Roughley, I mean, roughly). I think she should stop worrying about that. Where I come from we think Long Island is the height of glamour. It has its own sound, too, I mean, Sound. Glasgow had to work for years to get the Glasgow Sound, but Long Island produced the Long Island Sound immediately. Her other name is the Merry Prankster, which as Ciaran Carson might say reminds me of Joan Didion, whose White Album I was reading yesterday, which reminds me of Lloyd Cole (of course) and - Peter Miller. It all works out. Didion talks about 'jaycees' and I had to wonder if these were named after the editor in The Bell Jar, who turns up, by the way, in diluted and diminished form, on the last song of I Think You Dropped A Moonbeam, whose last song is named after something that Esther Greenwood says to her. Speaking of that, I have finally found that Irving Berlin record I have been looking for. Whoever can tell me what the best 5 Irving Berlin songs are wins a prize from the Irving Berlin foundation; at least, that's what they tell me. I cannot yet work out whether Berlin was a) a subtle, classy and moving songwriter or b) a sort of high-kicking sloganeer. I am beginning to think that the critics' easy coupling of him and Porter is a bit of an error. A record which is quite good is Bruce Springsteen's TUNNEL OF LOVE, which features tons of pleasures. A band who like Bruce Springsteen are Deacon Blue. The good news for pop fans is that they are back, I mean, de retour. Like B&S they are making great play with their Glasgwegian origins in between-song banter. Their set is roughly as follows: YOUR TOWN RAINTOWN TWIST AND SHOUT LOADED REAL GONE KID WAGES DAY [two or three new songs] WHEN WILL YOU MAKE MY TELEPHONE RING? FERGUS SINGS THE BLUES DIGNITY HOMESICK encore: CHOCOLATE GIRL I'LL NEVER FALL IN LOVE AGAIN QUEEN OF THE NEW YEAR I cannot imagine why anyone would give away their copy of the Raintown LP. It is - I now realize - a pretty high quality debut. Whether it is as good a debut as Tigermilk, I am not sure. A critic who is quite good is F.R. Leavis? Or is he? I have been rereading him and am still not really convinced. I have also been rereading Lionel Trilling, but I don't intend to start that one up again. If the white stripes are playing in your town then there is nothing you can do but GO!!! When they played in New Zealand I had the good fortune to see them three times and they are without a doubt the best band in the known universe( ok, the best band in the known universe that isn't a Scottish 8-piece).AND THAT JACK WHITE, he is one of the few boys that has made me go weak at the knees. Sinister: Edinburgh Picnic, Saturday 28th July

The famous date of Saturday 28th July is approaching, and with it the GREAT EMBRA PICNIC BY THE SEA! It's going to be, as has already been said, a barbecue on the beach. North Berwick beach, to be precise, because it's easy to get to, not too far away, and nice and yellow and sandy. We'll be bringing a three-pack of those disposable mini-barbecues you can buy in the supermarket and some rocket fuel for lighting them. We welcome MORE FIREPOWER from anyone else with a bunsen burner or similar, because rubbing sticks together is Just Too Slow. What you bring to cook on said hardware is up to you. We'll reserve at least one of the barbecues for veggie food if that's what people want. If you want to roast a whole sheep, please remember that it takes a nice big bonfire, a spit, and about 7 hours cooking time (one of us has witnessed such a preparation over the course of about fifteen cans of Heineken...) Of course, feel free to bring along the usual picnic grub as well: Haribo, vodka, langoustines, a few small sherries, vodka, whatever you want to eat, whatever you want to share, and maybe some vodka. OK. Details. The easiest way for most people to get to North Berwick---and the way *we'll* be going---is by train from Edinburgh Waverley station. Trains leave at 7 and 37 minutes past the hour. We plan to travel on the 13:37 train, and we'll hang around either on the appropriate platform or outside WH Smith from about one o'clock so we can all meet up, tickets purchased and ready to go (or tickets not purchased and ready to spend the half-hour ride hiding in the loo). If you miss the train, there's another one half an hour later. If that happens, or if you want to make your own way there, you can meet us on the beach. We should make it clear that North Berwick has two beaches. The one we're referring to lies to the left hand side of the main street and stretches from the left hand side of the harbour and the lido (as you look out to sea), to the west. If you get lost, you can always phone us---see below for the numbers. Once we reach the beach, we'll probably make camp some way along the shore, probably near the golf links outside the Royal Marine Hotel, if we can all be bothered to walk that far. The beach gets even nicer a bit further along, but that means walking about a mile... If it's raining, we'll go to a cafe (surely not?) or pub (that sounds more like it) or some other place of refreshment. This is where those awfully modern mobile telephone things come in to play. I wish to start by apologising for just how rude the subject of my last post was. I meant it to be a bit of a pun, but I'm not very good at things like that. It turned out the pun was much better than I had intended but should not have been seen by the unblemished minds of sinister tweefolk. NEW SINGLE Ken Chu has been on heat lately, purely in a posting sense. I, like Gina, don't think that I Love My Car will be the a-side to the new single. It's too odd and would get zero radio play. The new song at Ipswich is much more of a likely candidate. I will try and get hold of recordings for both this and the Birmingham gig to try and decide whether the new songs were different. Why does the Jeepster site still refer to JD as Jonathan & David? I would have thought the record label that released it could have got the title right, even if HMV et al. couldn't SMOKE I wasn't going to wear my Stow t-shirt at the picnic, but I've been provoked now. It is very big so I can hide inside it, then Mr. Casarotto won't be able to find me. DRIBBLING OBSESSION This is not my obsession with dribbling, but more my dribbling as a result of my obsession with Struan. I have been reading The Picture Of Dorian Gray and decided my obsession is like that of Basil Hallwards. Unfortunately he comes across as a very sad, meek and socially depraved man. so sinistreens, if i don't post now I'll procrastinate and then there will be no relevance to anyone else's posts so i better get on with it ------> ----MR ROB BRENNAN!---- ok buster, at what time were born on the 28th July 1975 hmmm? I was brought into this world (from a much more cosier one) at 21:30. two listees born on the same day!what are the chances of that happening etc etc? i'm not having a picnic, it's too cold in Leeds at the moment (so where did it go struan?) - so it's the elbow rooms for many games of pool and white russians (i'll take the milk and vodka - you take the orange and red bull). ----R!A!H!---- ok, i know it was a while ago, but R!A!H! was truly ace. best gig i've been to i think and the best smeb & sbenastian performance i've seen (ooh - look at you!). as befits my luck (read effort), i missed out on the greenwich picanic - well kind of. me and my non-sinistreens (and non-twee) managed to make it about half way up the hill before we collapsed in a hungover state. so i've still not met any of you fellow listees. and all intentions for visiting tate modern were replaced with sleeping in after staying up *all night* in queens park's park after dark. the hodottir (twas she was it not?) rocked with TSTIAI, though it could have been us! we were in the box next to waldorf & statler and when struan first asked if anyone wanted to sing we all pointed at our mate rich (nightingale with the blues in case you were asking) to sing - but he was too shy and i was too excited so struan looked elsewhere - phew/boo! ----WHITE STRIPES---- my mate told me to get tickets to their leeds gig next week, so i did. still not heard any of their stuff, so i just downloaded (you ain't seen me roight?) a track off winmx. can't listen to it yet as there's a meeting going on ... ----KEN CHU---- 's posts are grate. keep it up dude! and i want some bowling shoes - the right colours for all occasions and little holes to let yr feet breathe. au revoir my leetle churms, Dan. ps: i bought some imported *strawberry* (check it!) smarties from the market the other day & they rock! well the red ones do. pps: on that note, let me tell you about www.cybercandy.co.uk for all your crazy candy needs ... +-------------------------------------------------------------------------+ +---+ Brought to you by the Sinister mailing list +---+ To send to the list mail sinister(a)missprint.org. Dear Sinisters, I never imagined how complicate it would have been to write a line to step into the list without feeling so dull... Hence please have mercy of me.. steve peet asked <Has anyone ever just thrown away something they have given over a fair <portion of their lives and savings to collecting? ... well this is quite a trouble with me because, in principle, I won't throw anything away. But this was especially traumatic when in the last 3 years I've been able to fill up the space of mine, at job with all the 60-70 styled crap I may have found around, (most of the things was oscilloscope, voltmeter, lamps, lenses, and unknown device units, radio, and God blessed who decided to let it into the trash a laser!!! Yes a real (working) laser....... something like Delia Derbyshhire Studio, but just more messed up , and unfortunately no music getting out from it..). Moreover almost everything was at least half-working but after all I could manage to assemble up a quite fancy_but_smart machinery [...my poor and pure baby! ] with all that, but it's a long long and, I fear, quite boring story.. at the end my boss jumped in the room and sad it was REALLY better to clean up the place. This has been last week, and I fell into a deep depression; outside was raining. I don't mind the rain actually, but It is weeks it's raining every day! Did someone said if anyone wants some anti-depressive tabs/drops (madeleine I guess)? Well, it's me. Would you mind to borrow some? We could make an exchange. Do you feel a tube oscilloscope should be usefulto you, someway? I've kept pieces in a place which is often called as my office (I won't admit it), but, shh..., don't tell anyone!! I fell in love with my fluo-machine.. and I had to kill him... Better to shut up know. Sinister: When there was nothing more to preserve, she began to pickle

I'll say, Struan has a love/hate relationship with summer: "I know where the summer dwells/ When you're having no fun/When you're under the thumb" (what does being under the thumb mean anyway?) "I spent the summer wasting/ The sky was blue beyond compare" I just returned from my college-seeing trip in the Northeast. It was a week of driving around in a rented silver Pontiac Sunfire named Stevie, listening to Glaxie 500 until my mother complained, and getting lost somewhere between Cambridge and Boston. There's nothing like being 17 and being unsure of where you'll be the next year, and having no better luck with career plans either. I'm sure life after college doesn't get any easier, listening to the tales of other Sinisterites. I know I shouldn't be using Sinister as a college-searching utility, but if you happen to go to a college in the East coast, do you think you can share your insight of your school? That would be greatly appreciated. Oh! And when I was in Rhode Island, I saw a big B+S display outside a record store, and I was so excited I took a picture. I am jealous of whoever got a Jonathan David video in a record store, because there are absolutely no record stores where I live. Yay! B+S in the US. Although I live in Florida, I am most definetly driving to wherever B+S may land on the West Coast, probably in California. I wonder if anyone is hosting a "picnic" (such a foreign word!) before the concert? Well, I shouldn't get carried away; they haven't even announced anything yet, I think. I keep on having nightmares about the Emcee in the play "Cabaret". I went to see Cabaret when I was in NY, and the light kept on reflecting on his nipples, because he had red sequins attached to them. It was so eerie it made me laugh. I have been volunteering at the museum lately. It's a relatively easy job, pasting articles into scrapbooks. I work with a 50-year old woman who constantly makes eyes at the man who comes in to make coffee for us. I get embarrassed for her. And there is a Dirk Bogarde look-alike at the museum office; that's never good. I've been listening to a lot of Sigur Ros lately. Thanks to Blake for the strong recommendation. I think he sings in "Hopelandish", or whatever it is called, but I can't tell, since I can't speak Icelandic. I have also been listening to Archaic Smile. Has anyone heard of them? After the clamorous response to my last entry on sweets, I have decided to withhold the next nougat, I mean, nugget. But it will come, oh, come it will, if I can just lug that buik to the computer one more time. After the extensive response to my proleptic report on Fr. McCabe's wake, I have decided to hold back on that too. I see that 'Peter Miller' has refrained from answering my last post. Could it be that he just has no answers to the incisive questions I put? I think it must be. That is to say: he has lost his Big Book About The Buggles. Edna Welthorpe has not posted in at least a week now. But I am missing most especially David Moore. Could he have become confused and gone off to sort out the peace process? A book about value that is quite valuable is Barbara Hernstein Smith's CONTINGENCIES OF VALUE (1988). Her opening discussion of what Shakespeare is pretty poptastic; I mean, relevant to pop. She writes like a writer, too. Has anyone ever been to Madison, Wisconsin? If someone there offered to publish a book by you, would you accept? Would it depend whether they came from 'the right side of the tracks'? A song that is quite good is Paul McCartney's - oh, no, I have said that before. Let me start again. I'll think of something. A song that is quite good is 'Goodbye Girl', by the Squeeze. Nick Dastoor, who is not reading this, will not be interested to know whether 'Goodbye Girl' is or is not a love song. He makes out that he thinks that songs are only interesting if they are 'performed in a modern style'. Perhaps he really does think it. Very excited, as my second lot of mail order cds came through today. I'd like to thank whoever recommended opalmusic to me, as they're wonderful!!! So quick, and so many things I want. Although I really should curse you, because I have spent lots of money there in the last three days, gone about £70 over my overdraft limit, and been charged another £20 by my bank. Never go to the Bank of Scotland, they're crap..... they charge you every time you breathe in their general direction....... But the best thing that came out of the whole thing is that I now ownJD (I know, I'm slow...am I outcast now???!?!) and a box set of B&S stuff, (I don't know what stuff, but it'll be nice to own anyway - phew, content!) and best of all, Camera Obscura 'Eighties Fan', which is just AMAZING , so thanks to everyone who mentioned that at any point in my list life (this is like the oscars getting, or maybe the baftas, the slightly lower budget version). on the subject of bread-spreads, my last words are : Milky Bar Spread. ken - wonky hats are bad, but when I was twelve my family let me get my photo taken with my entire skirt tucked into my tights, THAT was bad.
