**HOLIDAYS** God bless Bed and Breakfasts. I had some lovely times in silent, tense dining rooms trying very hard not to drop the coffee pot or spill ketchup down my front (asking for the ketchup itself was very embarrassing, but what on earth is the point of a fried brekkie without sauce?). My mum and I talked to each other but all the other people who had gone on holiday seemed to be quite fed up of each other. When we weren't talking we stared out of the 12 ft by 12 ft window at the sea. The house had been built on the cliff top for a lady artist with more monet than talent and was a splendid tribute to grand gestures and folly. I loved it. The sea was beautiful and turbulent and it made my heart race like I was on a fairground ride. The spray flew up over the end of the pier that I was standing on and I kept wanting to get closer and closer to the waves or even jump in. What is this compulsion to do foolish things? Is there a name for it other than 'youth'? I lay on the beach in St Ives and saw a fellow wearing an Amper Sands T shirt. I had meant to wear mine that day but didn't for some reason and ended up in a short top that kept riding up and showing my stomach that had got all fat from fish and chips and fudge. My brother frolicked in the sea with his girlfriend and make me feel quite uncomfortable with their PDAs. They *droop* and *fawn* over each other. There are many reasons why I dislike this behaviour. I shall not bother to explain and attempt to justify them. Suffice to say, I am a prude who does not find it necessary to know that other people are sexually active. I'd like to think I am joking, but I fear I am not. **SIMON ARMITAGE** Big shakes to everyone who has advised me as to what to look for, etc. especially PeetSketchSteve, who make me a tape. I am saving it to listen to in bed tonight. Thank you very much. **SENILITY** I appear to have caught senilty of my mother, my grandmother or aunt sadie. Or perhaps all three. Whilst on holiday with my mum, she only annoyed me seriously three times. These were: when she pulled and pulled so hard on a door that should be pushed that the handle fell off (this happened while I was standing on the other side of the door saying "Push, Woman! Push!"); her deafness and her complete lack of spatial awareness. I am no mistress at the art of knowing right from left myself, but if it weren't for me, she's still be walking in circles round Penzance train station. Anyway, I feel like I am turning into her. My hips ache and I keep forgetting things and spilling things and I cried the other day because I felt ill, which made me feel even stupider. And then I was sick, which send the stupidometer off the scale. **THE MARMITE DEBATE SETTLED (ONCE AND FOR ALL)** Marmite and butter: Yes Marmite and peanut butter: Yes (especially with crispy lettuce) Marmite and strong cheddar: Yes (also with crisps) Bananas: No. I am afraid of them **IN WHICH MADELEINE APOLOGISES** Sorry. ello babies inevitable bonus points for spotting subject err subject (however you will be pointed at and called a goth). So, I'm going to york on saturday for a wedding so i'm afraid you will be denied my physical presence at the picnic (although i will, of course, end up phoning someone i would've thought, who's on vodaphone (and going) anyway?). Am I also correct in assuming that the York massive are going to london? If I am incorrect I'm sure a pint and good company would be appreciated if anyone fancies it, as i get in about half 2 :) I saw GR on special in the window of blackwells the other day and thought of you :) I hope the sinisterines who were in genoa are OK, i must say the italian police looked particularly heavy-handed from what i saw on the news. At least vel should be easy to spot in glasgow in her white boilersuit and bowler hat. Orb said, regarding sundays: for years they used to remind me of avoiding unfinished homework by watching Howard's Way. Now they remind me of sunny afternoons in quiet village pubs in the South Downs. Am I the only one who still gets the "oh god homework!" feeling on Sundays, despite not having had any homework to do for more years than they care to remember, generally it's if i accidentally catch the theme tune to antiques roadshow or songs of praise, or last of the effing summer wine (WHY AREN'T THEY ALL DEAD YET!!!). also if i may take this opportunity to apologise to the people i haven't sent tapes to, it's pay day on friday so i'll do it then. Dr PF: I cannot imagine why anyone would give away their copy of the Raintown LP. It is - I now realize - a pretty high quality debut. I never gave my copy away, although i seem to have misplaced my copy of Adventures through the Ultraworld by the Orb (as opposed to Orb) which a friend was after the other day, has anyone seen it? I also never gave away my copy of "it's a shame about ray" which as well as been the archetypal "short album" is also GRATE on a musical level i have recently rediscovered. also PF, tell us about go west and whether wicky woss has had that gap in his teeth fixed. I fear that priscilla may be known as "the strawberries and cream girl" for ever now, go and get strawberriesandcreamgirl@hotmail while you still can is my advice. I finally got a copy of Jonathon David today (whoo hoo?). Those that say that TYCCASI sounds like "I've been to paradise" Are certainly not wrong. It's a kind of a disturbing trend these days- bands releasing songs that, while not being exact copies of a classic song from the play list of a 1970's AM radio station, certainly evoke enough of their "spirit" to be a rip-off. Come to think of it that "something in the Silence" or whatever it's called does the same thing , I just can't quite pin down which song it is. And don't get me started on those "artists" that sing the chorus of some long ago song and then fill the rest of the three minutes on some oblique rap. God I sound so old. Artsy Deco mentioned that David Byrne-in his youth-looked like struan. Poor deluded child, the only thing that the young David Byrne resembled was some bizarre breed of poultry. Jo Perry said that her first B&S song was mayfly- the first one I heard was Expectations, and I was sold hook, line and speaker-the most monumental four minutes in the last few years. nice to see honey pop her wee head out of the hole. unfortunately it was for a bad reason, which I was aware of. my bf and I were trying to embarrass each other by doing searches for each other's name, but none of my sinister links worked. which was really too bad, because all my posts have been shining beacons of wonderfulness in an otherwise dreary landscape of craptacularness. which is to say, they haven't been. I saw a man trip over a piece of plywood that was helping to hold up scaffolding, and I giggled. was that wrong? it was quite humorous; he got this huge "wha..." cartoon look on his face and his eyes bugged out. he didn't fall and hurt himself or anything; I'm not sadistic. speaking of which, why is it that I never saw scaffolding in london? new york is approximately 4130 year younger than london and yet you can't walk two blocks without large metal poles getting in your way. they shade the sidewalk though. I was going to write a rebuttal of tom "corduroy boy"'s comment that critics serve no useful purpose, but it's pretty self-evident that they do. I'll direct you all to the joint colaboration "in defense of criticism" by joseph heller and that guy from "30-second previews". it's a wild read. I tried to get free tickets to see weezer tonight, but it didn't happen, because 1) I didn't care to sit on the sidewalk for three hours to see a band whose most recent album sucked 2) it was sponsored by trl and 3) there were 14-year old boys painted green harassing the k-rock van for tickets, and trying to steal tickets from nsync fans who "don't like weezer but it's free, and that guy is cute" (actual quote). in honor of sister "P F" disco, a book that is quite good is "a plague of murder" by colin wilson. an album that is quite good is martha reeves + the vandellas' "the ultimate collection". nice to see peter carter back. -eric ____________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Hello pleasant people, No, i have not forgotten how to spell, nor have i become a southern baptist preacher who insists on shouting God's word,in case you thought that. I am listening to Dusty Springfield wondering how she maintained such a fine head of hair, i assume its hairspray, its not really a question worthy of too much speculation. Unfortunately my boyfriend has no knowledge of Belle and Sebastian, and therefore in order for our relationship to continue harmoniously i will have to introduce him to their splendour. This is where you can help, thankfully you will not need an empty washing up bottle or a yard of the elusive sticky back plastic to help me.(not really elusive more like a trek to homebase to purchase it) I wish to know which song i should lure him in with. it happened last night, i dreamed the video for the forthcoming single! the band were in a deserted airport at night and they were skateboarding and scootering around the place. that was kind of it, sorry, it was quite cool when i dreamed it, the song was dead funky with a choppy wah-wah guitar type bit in it. i was wrong about my last dreamed song prediction so i've no reason to believe this one will be any better. people have been mentioning Sigur Rós again. this can only be a good thing. the american publication 'entertainment weekly' described the band as: sigur rós = [(pink floyd + godspeed you black emperor) + air] so how would B&S be described best as a mathematical equation? Sinister: my crimes are biting me in the arse

i went to apply for another job today. it is a receptionist job, which might not be so bad because receptionists in movies are always sitting around filing their nails and yawning, and while i have never filed my nails in my life, i do like to yawn. part of the application required that you rate yourself on a scale of 1-10 for each in a column of adjectives. there was another girl applying for the job, and she leaned over quietly... girl: psst! what does 'assertive' mean? kirsten: well, to be assertive is to be despicably lazy, and also incompetent. girl: ooh, i better give myself only a one or a two on that one. kirsten: yes, definitely. and good luck to you. no, i'm just kidding, i didn't say that but it took an unbelievable amount of self-control. at that point in the application process, i was reasonably certain that i had a decent chance of getting the job over this girl, but then i got to the part about criminal convictions, and i legally had to elaborate upon my night in the slammer with tangueray the crack pusher and the mousy woman who had killed her children. i was only in for underage drinking. Hello members of la famille sinistre, i'm stepping out of reasonably frequent lurkerdom here, albeit self-imposed by a) uni, and, b) work. eons ago, while talking about her time at university, Idleberry said: 'and i got an ace bunch of pals. and i know what kind of people i don't like' which made me quite sad because i ended up not really getting on with the people that i shared a house with at uni. of course this could have been because i was sharing with a pyschotic, obssessive compulsive fairy penguin of a woman. but there you go. _yonks_ ago, Lola Monnet said: 'i like the things you write about also, the people i know only talk about bad things like drugs and kissing a lot of boys' with which i must firstly concur and, secondly, proclaim that nothing as exiting as that happens round 'ere. i have an artistic obssession. i want to get an ickle portable labelmaker so that i can type out random pieces of poetry while walking the streets of London and tag people with them. this has two advantages. 1) said people will be considerably scared and may start believing that they have a stalker and, 2) i (and hopefully other random people) can then see which pieces of poetry i (we) can spot and end up with a completely different poem, depending upon which stalkee turns up first. i think it would work extremely well with Edward Lear's 'The Quangle Wangle's Hat'. well, for the scaring option anyway. has anybody else seen 'El Nombre' yet? it's a kiddies programme on bbc2. i recommend it highly. it's of Bagpuss calibre. i hope that rambling was intelligent. i hate reading my own posts. boondoggles, Charlotte x _______________________________________________________ Get 100% private, FREE email for life from Excite UK Visit http://inbox.excite.co.uk/ +-------------------------------------------------------------------------+ +---+ Brought to you by the Sinister mailing list +---+ To send to the list mail sinister(a)missprint.org. Hello all, Priscila, "the strawberries & cream girl" again. I don't know where to start, I've just spent the last few days knee deep in sinister, ploughing through what must have been at least 180 postings. I thought it was weird that I wasn't hearing from the lot of you for a while, until I realized that everything was going straight to my junk mail folder. So the result is that I have now got loads of replies to things that have been written, most of which have been said already- the postings were *that* old. Serves me right for being such a computer dunce. I was watching Ally McBeal the other night, when it occurred to me that the guy that plays Richard looked oddly familiar, as if he reminded me of someone else. I then realized who it was - our very own Struan! Has anybody else noticed or am I the only one who sees B&S heads on normal people? I must be an official sinister now because B&S have started to pervade my dreams. Legal Man was playing the other day on one, I dunno about content, though. Maybe I should forget about the whole sinister thing, I'm not sure it's very healthy. Or maybe that's precisely the point. Well, that's all for now. No, not really. I just thought I'd say that because it makes Sam Walton smile when I do and don't finish immediately. And if I can make at least one person smile today, it'll have been a worthwhile day :)(I AM the queen of twee!). I'd just like to join in the debate and say that I L!O!V!E! summer. It's grate, I blossom, I completely come alive, it makes the long, miserable UK winter worthwhile. I'm looking out the windows (6) and its such a beautiful evening, how can anybody not like that? And as for cars they're evil. There is no debate about that. They are evil and they make people lazy. If all cars disappeared off the face of the earth you would see an immediate change in the atmosphere and the weather would return to what it should be like. Having said that, I do own one. What a hypocrite. I don't use it often, though. Really. The Dirty Vicar Ian mentioned "Fucking Amal" recently. Funny, I'd never thought of it as B&Sey but I couldn't agree more. If it were a song it would be "She's Losing It" (and no, Ian, my ex-sister in law isn't from Sligo in Ireland; she's from Thurso, Caithness). The corduroy boy was going on about Fluff the other day. You can get it in Brazil as well, it's sold as marshmallow ice cream topping and is supposed to be mixed with three parts water which one should never do as that would ruin it. It is quite simply the ultimate in comfort food. I can MURDER a tub of the stuff when I'm down. And for the benefit of Mr. Chris Jones: of *course* B&S are a duo! Belle is the ultimate indie dog! Mmm... not too happy about B&S going to Brazil. That's gonna be an expensive one. RAH was a few tube stations away, Aberdeen more than a few, but Brazil...Looks like I'm going to have to feign a sudden interest in visiting my lunatic mother. Still, it has to be done.
