Well, I got home from Greece today at about 3 in the afternoon, went to sleep, hung around a bit, finally got round to dragging my computer into the shed (where it habitually resides) from the house where it had been left to stop it being nicked.Now it is about 5:20, realise that I have got 201 e-mails and I finish downloading them all at about 5:30. Then realise there was a picnic earlier that very day and feel all unhappy, especially as I have got Flu and if I was there would simply sneeze and moan all over the lot of you. Also, have been on move across continents for a little while and thus deprived of any cockroach free washing facilities and apparently smell like municipal tip, although due to blocked nose cannot smell anything. Cannot have bath/shower here as boiler is bust and water v.cold. Must admit to having morbid fear of cockroaches. More about lovely holiday later. Hope there will be a picnic in about September as that is when I will next be in London. Between now and then, I will be dragged around the country by my various parents. One will take me to Yorkshire (v.g.) and possibly to Edinb (v.v.g.) as my Step-mother went to Uni there and we sometimes stay with people. My mother, on the other hand will drive me to swansea and pack me off on a ferry to Ireland which is nice but where I will be going it is v.boring unless you have an affinity to sheep and my mother's ghastly friends who will surely be torturing me with their endless questions. I know I shouldn't moan but there you go. Now, lovely holiday time. Went to Athens on 9th (I think) and stayed there with my father for 2 days. Had a look at Acropolis which was v.nice but covered with Tourists. Had a look at Battleship Averov which was v.old and completely deserted apart from crew of about 6. Step-Mother arrived with little sister and all got on 11-hour Ferry to tiny Cycladian Island called Sikinos. Sikinos has v.few tourists and no rain for 3 years so water has to be tanked in twice a week. Spent whole time lazing around or walking. Got up at 8 every morning, 9-o'clock bus to Ano Pronia, where the beach is, went swimming until about 10:30, had iced coffee in same cafe at same table and got 11:15 bus back up to Horia where was staying. Had early lunch and would read before playing Monopoly with 5-year-old sister who would get all tired and disinterested before it really got interesting. Then would read my book for a while. Read Bridget Jones, which was funny. Read White Teeth, on Recommendation from Sinister, and thought was very good, although somewhat conrtived towards the end. Still really amazing book, though. Tried to read Ulysees but gave up. Tried to read Proust but couldn't be bothered. Read P.G. Wodehouse instead. Read Something by JorgeLouis Borges which was OK. Then Got Flu and had to stay in bed, listening to 1 song at a time on my walkman with 1 hour gaps as batteries ran out on first day in Sikinos where getting more was impossible. Spent 4 days in Bed and sent postcards. Felt better on last day and went on long walk to site of Archeological importance. Felt terrible afterwards. Went back to Athens on over-night ferry next day. Now am back here and there you go. Thankyou to all those people who mentioned me in their posts or who sent me lovely e-mails in regard to my last post. I am presently in the process of writing back to you all. Somebody has probably mentioned this before but in 'Creeque Alley' by The Mamas and The Papas it mentions "In a coffee house Sebastian sat". A great prophecy perhaps? I've nothing else to say in my ears-still-haven't-popped-after-the-flight-yet-due-to-blocked-nose state. So I went to the McSweeney's festival this weekend. I would waste valuable space on intense descriptive detail, but that would be boring, and that's not really tolerated on this list. so, speed descriptions: Zadie Smith: as young and as pretty as expected. adores Madonna, loves Radiohead, smokes like a fiend, is very patient. Does *not* like Will Self. Neal Pollack: funny, but very guarded. stingy with his *free* books. (there was a contest for most pretentious t-shirt, and I won, but never got the book he promised) somewhat alarmed by my questions. Dave Eggers: not the monster I thought he would be. Approached me in the bar and congratulated me on winning the t-shirt contest. Called me 'sport' and directed me to Neal Pollack, which was cool, but weird. He is insanely laid-back, so serene. I don't know how he deals with what he does (at the signing, people were telling him about how relatives of theirs had died, etc) but he is calm- an American Buddha, a california curly-haired Jesus. well- main content being that, when I was in line to get my book signed, he remembered me from the past night, and said "hey, the guy with the t-shirt, what are you wearing today?", "Belle and Sebastian t-shirt", I squeaked. "Cool," Dave said. Neal Pollack said "you know you can't win two days in a row", which I thought was unnecessary. (and I've never figured B&S to be that pretentious. maybe some of the fans..) when i finally got up to him, Dave asked me if I remembered the scene from Hi-Fidelity, and i said "of course, it's so funny". Dave said he liked the band, but that he was listening to mostly country now, old-time country with yodeling. He told me he could not get enough yodeling. Hello sinisters I have to tell you about the man who almost killed me yesterday. His arms bulged with tattoos. The left arm said Belle and the right one Sebastian. If only. He lips said "I'm going to get you, you fucker." The customers were quite surprised. The man was shaking his fists over the counter because he said I'd "Called him a thief", which wasn't true at all, and told me to come outside and settle it. It took Gay Jon to scare him off; I was hopeless. Jon just told him to stop being so silly and gave him a look and the man went away. "You bastard", I shouted, but I don't think he heard. It was half an hour later, anyway. Kinky Ken said >Philip Boucher did a lot of maths, which was quite funny, but unfortunately >one of the lines was mathematically incorrect.. Strange sounds have been coming from the wheelie bin, like a bubbling fish-voice muffled by teabags and carrot tops. Once I thought it said "You killled meee!" - a damning accusation - but on second thoughts it sounded more like "I'm gilled, meee" - a harmless fact. The fish must be thinking of the meaning of its fishy life. These noises, they could be a ghost, or maybe a mouse, but I suspect its only my guilty imagination. Poor Pancake. this is something that has been bothering me for awhile, and i hope i am not alone...please, someone reassure me that i am not an uncultured swine. unless i AM, in which case please, someone tell me the truth so i can retire from my artistic endeavors and start learning how to be a trucker. i always giggle at conceptual art. it's happened for years, and it happened four hours ago. i just don't see how people can step into a room draped in balloons and electrical tape and nod knowingly. there was one room in which there was a television playing a tape of two boys dancing and singing "ragtime gal" in a manner which suggested some level of inebriation. the boys on the tape were smiling at times, so i thought maybe it was okay that i was visibly fighting to suppress the wild bursts of laughter building up inside. but then i looked around and nobody else was smiling at all...and stony-faced strangers nodding at the ragtime gal performance made me want to laugh all the more. i am not a loud or excitable person, but for some reason i cannot keep my composure in these situations. am i intimidated? am i overwhelmed? am i naive? or is it all just bullshit? i'm thinking i may have some pretty good art right here: leftovers from my infamous gesso phase, during which i painstakingly coated many of my personal belongings with multiple layers of thick white gesso. i am now the proud owner of what emily calls "the avant-garde tool kit," including a smooth white hammer and a tape-measure which is now useless because i painted over the numbers. but it wasn't supposed to be artistic, i was just bored and felt like wasting gesso. anyway, i apologize for the length of this post, but i know there are gobs of people on this list who are far more artistically- minded than i am, and i am hoping someone can either sympathize with me, enlighten me, or advise me to stay the hell away from conceptual art so as to avoid future embarassment. luv luv luv kirsten quote of the evening: "i hate art.' -scott Care2 make the world greener! http://www.care2.com - Get your Free e-mail account that helps save Wildlife! +-------------------------------------------------------------------------+ +---+ Brought to you by the Sinister mailing list +---+ To send to the list mail sinister(a)missprint.org. Hello, Oh Goody! Not only do we have "A charming lady member of the proletariat, resplendent in cheap H Samuel merchandise - her ear was clanging like cutlery in a sack," but now we have women = dumbshits jokes! I love it! It's wonderful how discussing an election is deemed too uncomfortable, but derogotary humor goes unchecked! ( I mean no personal offense, and I hope I'm not breaking any list rules, but there are some things one feels compelled to give her 2 cents about.) On a lighter note, my friend in portland oregon reports seeing a small group of people parading down the street last weekend playing tubas and other such instruments made out of cardboard along to taped marching music! they turned out to be the Lucksmiths, and apparently they joined my friend and the other kids in their Super8 parade and are quite nice fellows. and I will be celebrating Belle & Sebastian day tomorrow with my *new* (but far away) girlfriend, who introduced me to the wonders of B & S one spring day. We will be riding around in her big truck in her hick logging town singing madly. Maybe I'll even buy some American equivalent of Ribena. Hello kiddywinks, This is only a quick one cos I'll be seeing some of you tomorrow anyway. I woke up this morning to realise someone had tried to break into my flat. They tried to kick the door in while I was away the previous night and I only realized today. It really freaked me because had I been at home, the door wouldn't have been locked and they would have got in. The good thing was I got the police to come round and they sent a young lad who was just soooooo cute! I kept wanting to ask his name and looking him in the eye all the time but it was difficult making the conversation more personal. The only time anything personal was said was when I turned IYFS down on the stereo and he said "Is that the new Belle & Sebastian?" and I replied "Yeah, but it's not new. Do you like 'em?" and he said yes. Cool, we've already got one thing in common. A policeman with taste in music and a good looking one at that. Sinister: I'm so excited to be sending my first post

Well how on earth am I supposed to sleep tonight? Firstly I got an e-mail today saying I was officially allowed to write to you lovely people in person... and secondly I am going to meet some of you tommorow. I suppose I should tell you how I came to be on this list. It happened some time ago now. When I was young and only 6 months old I went to a picnic with the girl. Afterwards I wanted to say thankyou and hello to you all personally... but the girl told me that I couldn't. So I had to sit pleading with her for hours until she gave in and let me use her e-mail. And that just won't do... I have to do enough sitting pleading with her already... otherwise I don't think that she would ever give me any of her food and it is always so much nicer than anything she puts in my plate. So here I am writing my first official letter and I don't half feel proud. It is probably a good thing that I didn't have an e-mail account all that time ago though. Now that I'm 7 and half months old I can handle the responsibility much better. The girl tells me that we are off to a picnic tommorow... and we will see some of you people... not only that but we will be at the beach... You can see why this would make me so excited can't you? I will be able to swim, dig and kiss everybody all on the same day... So I have been preparing myself ... collecting things I think the girl should bring with us... she doesn't seem to appreciate it too much and says that the plant pot can stay out of the house thankyou very much and that I shouldn't have ripped up the magazine... Sometime she really she can be a little ungrateful... Sinister: I won't forget the subject thjs time (only mispell it)

Hello darling Children of Sinister, I forgot to give a title to my last posting, so pardon me for my dullness. Just got in from a trip this evening and reached for my computer like a child reaches for a bag of sweets. I'm really beginning to enjoy this (especially given the recent bout of writing frenzy), how lovely to come home to all 1500 of you! So much to say, how do I string it all together? Sleeping sans knickers: I thought I was alone in this but no! There's at least one other female like me (I'm assuming they are female). I haven't slept without for about 20 years now, erotic situations excepted (that would really be taking it too far...). Ever since I was around eight and slept au naturel one night and had a dream I still haven't forgotten. I was in the playground at school and some boys lifted my blue uniform skirt while I wasn't looking. It was quite a regular occurence at that age, but this time I had no undies on and the entire playground saw my bits and laughed. Talk about traumatic. It still affects how I sleep today. Another vestige of my childhood is that Sunday feeling people have been talking about. Get this: I work shifts and even if it's NOT Sunday but I have to go to work after my days off, I STILL get it! I hate that feeling, it's so depressing and evokes some miserable times... Someone wrote about B&S becoming a pop band. B&S ARE a pop band! Aren't they? Anyway, I'd be a lot happier if the likes of them started having no.1 singles than the likes of Hearsay, but then again that would mean that mankind had evolved somewhat and I have a feeling we're not *quite* that far up the evolutionary ladder just yet. I'm looking forward to the pic'n'nick. Silly me, I deleted picnic mummy's instructions and thought I could look them up in the archives but when I looked...there were no archives!
