The lovely Andy Dean didn't know what he was starting when he wrote:
>no, the song on the end of that tape is 'white horses' by Jacky (and i
>know, i put it there!). it was a hit in the late 60s and is a theme tune
>to a kids' tv show about, duh!, white horses that aired in the early 70s

>called in those days.
As I recall, there wasn't anything like Live and Kicking on BBC until
Multi.Coloured Swap Shop opened its doors for business (which bloody well
reminds me, Trousers, where the dickens has the Monday poem got to? That
didn't last very long did it?), it was just a collection of kid's programmes
such as Zorro, The Flashing Blade and the Banana Splits (which was in itself
a forerunner of the Swap Shop format) with the odd cartoon (have you ever
noticed that whenever you put a group of people in a room together they
always end up talking about Northy?), followed by an Abbot and Costello
film. Over on ATV they were way ahead of the pack with Tiswas, which always
used to finish with an episode of Tarzan. Featuring Jai, who later, as
Kurtis Blow, played a major role in the development of hip hop.
My brother's wife has got the original "White Horses" single. A couple of
years ago I underwent lengthy negotiations with her to get it. All went
well, and eventually she bequeathed me her entire vinyl collection
except....White Horses. So I was left with a pile of Imagination and Police
LPs that none of the secondhand shops in Nottingham were willing to take off
my hands. There is a moral to this story somewhere.
The Flashing Blade had an even better theme tune. Occasionally they showed
that Jerry Lewis film where he plays the part of an alien who can't kiss
anybody without his nose bending. No wonder the French consider him a genius
. My lamp has broken. Is that a good enough excuse to sit here spouting
shite instead of working?

on the bizarre recent thread of psychopathic p.e. teachers i had one when i
was seven who refused to believe i couldn't swim. was convinced it was a wee
fib and so promptly picked me up by my arms, pulled me along the pool to teh
deep end and promptly discarded me into the deep end. it was only when i
singularly failed to resurface that he thought better of his cynicism and
leapt in to save me.
i would save his embarrassment and not reveal his name. i'm not usually a
vindictive sort, but what the hell - he deserves it! mr ewing. american chap.

though i tend to have kept quiet on this list, due to workloads and stresses,
you are still teh most singularly entertaining and interesting people i have

Sinister: White Horses?
Andy Arnette (aarnette(a)vt.edu)

>Got A Question...
>On a tape of 'Tigermilk' that I recently borrowed from a friend there is
>a song at the end with Isobel singing something about White Horses. Does
>anybody know what this song is? My friend claims it's a cover but is
>anyone familiar with the original? I don't have a clue but any help

um, that'll be my fault... 8)
no, the song on the end of that tape is 'white horses' by Jacky (and i
know, i put it there!). it was a hit in the late 60s and is a theme tune
to a kids' tv show about, duh!, white horses that aired in the early 70s
on bbc tv, saturday mornings before whatever 'live and kicking' was
called in those days. the only thing i remember about it was that it was
dubbed into english and, vaguely, the title sequence. the only other
thing i know she did was a version of the theme tune to 'rupert the
bear' (which has also been covered by lush).
i'd been looking for that for ages when it turned up on one of those tv
theme compilations a few years ago. would make a wonderful thing for b&s
to cover cos all the classic elements are already there, the voice, the
melody and those mournful trumpets... must send a tape of it to the
band... 8)

Greetings people
There was no sign of the weekly poem on the list yesterday, so I thought
I'd post this lovely cummings creation - not strictly b&s content I know,
but it's a wonderful poem nonetheless, and I know quite a few of you on
the list are partial to a bit of eec.
--------------------------------------------------
The first of all my dreams was of
a lover and his only love
strolling slowly (mind in mind)
through some green mysterious land
until my second dream begins
the sky is wild with leaves; which dance
and dancing swoop (and swooping whirl
over a frightened boy and girl)
but that mere fury soon became
silence: in huger always whom
two tiny selves sleep (doll by doll)
motionless under magical
foreverfully falling snow.
And then this dreamer wept: and so
she quickly dreamed a dream of spring
- how you and i are blossoming.
eec

Ahhh, love it.

Hmmm, sorry Sarah, still think Manics stuff is shite, I have listened to it,
I'm not just judging from outwards appearances, I've read almost all their
interviews since from when they started too, and I think they're great like
that, I still just don't like the band though.
No 6th form shite in Belle and Sebastian, there's nothing pretentious
floats around there - no sly references to Willem de Kooning or the like, at
least, none which are not used in a damning way (c.f. Le Pastie)
Still "Until I believe in my soul" by Dexy's is top, again, no
"intelligent" reference points, just kind of what Kevin Rowland's good at,
being very straight forward. Will love that record till the day I die.
Oops, just remembered Burn it Down's stuffed full of references. Never mind,
it's got a top brass break.
That's what makes sense to me really, a lot of black music works this way,
just being completely straight down the line, no need to have some prior
knowledge of something to make sense of it which I like, cause it means it's
likely to appeal to a broader range of people, not just rich kids who
attended public schools in the south of England. There is the argument that
it could get you interested in certain things which does hold some weight
too, but personally I love the way Marvin Gaye says "War is hell, when will
it end, when will people get together again". It's just a fucking great
feeling.
Cheers,
Keith.

is their any web page generally perceived to be the
>best/most comprehensive?
Not in my opinion, mainly because it doesn't change very often due to its
author's neverending search for Columbo videos. Another major fault is the
fact that they still haven't used my entry to the postcard competition from
ages ago, so I'm sulking a bit. It is a treasured saucy seaside postcard
depicting a pregnant lady at the doctor's. "Have you had a check-up, miss?"
askd the doctor. "No doctor, I think he came from Spain" replies the young
lady, much to the doctor's evident surprise.
All the websites are easily reached from Paul's website, which can be
reached by clicking below. Unless you're offline. They are all worth a look.
My personal favourite is the lemur one. The most comprehensive is probably
the lovely Andy Dean's massive archive of articles, interviews, sound
samples and photos from the videos. You can also find out how Andy got on
when he went to Scotland with some American girls on the train to see Belle
and Sebastian. Anyway, I daresay the perpetrators of the various websites
can blow their own trumpets better than I ever could.

In the absence of crab stories I am going to attempt to answer the above
query at the same time as Susannah's thoroughly laudable appeal for school
shower anecdotes....
I have vivid memories of a classmate pulling back his pre-pubescent foreskin
in the showers, brandishing his knob and shouting "Look Miller, I'm giving
me bollock a good wash!"
And they claim that "Titanic" is a good film!

As you can see I am from many years ago, 42, to be precise. I have yet to
experience the delights of all these bands that people discuss daily here.
It is only by a miracle of science that I am able to talk to you all in
this way..... oh no I am losing the connection . I will be sent back to the
future.
Goddamn stupid machine. Trinity college may pride itself in being an old
institution but surely this is going a bit too far!!!!
I'm bored. Anyone fancy a chat???
