From their Without being rude, I think it is an absolutely essential question that needs an answer. I spent 3 months living in a tent in front of my university's Administration with 30 others in an effort to stop the introduction of Fees for university degrees. All these rich fucks who have taken all the benefit of a free education in Australia are now denying us the same because IT DONT MAKE PROFIT. Sarah is right though, it is education as a whole. Remember: question what you learn, how you learn and why you learn. Sorry about that little explosion of emotion, but it is quite important to me. Sinister: Tigermilk questions

Finally! Ms. Roberta McKay of Florida, USA was kind enough to tape Tigermilk and the BBC sessions for me, so now I know what all of you are talking about. Relatively speaking... I do like Tigermilk. A lot. But I'm mostly impressed with the new stuff, the sessions. "Sleep the Clock Around" is unbelievable. For about a week, I kept rewinding that song over and over. Then, the next week was spent listening to "Slow Graffiti" over and over. If those songs are any indication, the new album will render all other albums unlistenable. I do have some questions, for anyone and everyone to answer: Who's doing the lead vocals on "Seymour Stein"? It sure as hell doesn't *sound* like Stuart M...if it is, he's be taking vocal lessons. And who's that sounding like David Bowie on "Modern Rock Song"? Is there anyplace where I can get complete lyrics to the sessions stuff? Or is no one touching that yet? Sinister: ummm.. Tuesday poem?

Regular viewers may have noticed that there was no poem yesterday, and foolishly presumed that I, like, forgot or something. Zut alors! In fact I was respecting sarah's student march by holding my own one day poetry strike. Nary a metaphor nor a metonym crossed my electronic picket line... The old list is getting a bit quiet again, n'est ce pas? A couple of promising threads, tho'... PE Teachers: For too long have we meekly accepted the propaganda that PE teachers are "hard, but fair" Bullet Baxter-from-Grange-Hill-types. My teacher, Mr Biggerstaff, once fractured my mate Derek's skull with a hockey ball, and is now wanted in three countries. Also, someone starting a fanzine mentioned bus trips. I think we oughta start ink-travelogues, like polaroids, but about your favourite routemaster journey. Having moved to SE London, where the underground is but a vague rumour, my life has been immeasureably improved by the 188 which takes me from the mean streets of Bermondsey over Waterloo bridge every morning. It's wonderful... Enough blather This week's poem is by James Tate. He's American, has won the Pulitzer prize, and is a kind of goofball surrealist, along the lines of Joseph Cornell or Donald Barthelme. His selected poems are published in the UK by carcanet, and are terrific. In no way does the melancholy of this poem reflect the fact that the only Valentines I got last Saturday were emails... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- James Tate Coda Love is not worth so much; I regret everything. Sinister: General ramblings

Hello happy bunnies Ha! I'm in a good mood today - we've managed to get our house for next year, but the best news is that all seven of us bar one are B&S fans, so we will have the ultimate B&S community. You can all come round for picnics and wild parties on long summer evenings. Has anybody got the lyrics to 'The loneliness of the middle distance runner'? I got a copy of this a few days ago (cheers Stuart!), and I was trying to work them out, but there are bits that still make absolutely no sense the way I hear them. Is it going to be on the next EP? Hope so, it's become one of my favourite B&S songs. Speaking of which, I was listening to '...Sinister' yesterday, and it dawned upon me why I hadn't voted on the fanclub site... as each song started it instantly became my favourite song on the album - for different reasons, the title track because of the lyrics, such wonderful lyrics like '...' oh there's no need to write them down, you know them as well as i do. And the gloriously sad but beautiful 'the boy done wrong again', 'all that i wanted was to sing the saddest song, and if you will sing along, i will be happy..' The emotions i go through in one hearing of the album range right through tears and elation - there's a song for every mood, and it all combines to create a masterpiece of unimaginable beauty. Sorry, i'm blathering now, it's just something really beautiful only comes along every now and again, and sometimes this album hits home so much that i'm just in awe of it. Can anybody tell me about Serge Gainsbourg? - I got a couple of CDs of his a week ago - 'comic strip' and 'le jazz dans le ravin', and I am very impressed by them - it's just I've heard his name mentioned on the list before. These two albums are compilations, I think, but I was wondering if there are any other records that I should get by him? Sinister: Manic

I've been following the Not So Manic Now debate, and I really don't think that the Brick Supply original is up to much. It's a bit like that Scandinavian Torn. I had the dubious honour of hanging out with Sarah Dubstar in Newcastle during the year when they were making the first album - she shared a flat with some friends of mine in the next street. She was an absolute gem, and it just makes me a bit sad to see what's happened to them now. It's so strange to see someone so totally unsuited to pop stardom thrust into the limelight for everyone to stare at. (I know she chose to do it, so it's her fault.) B&S's refusal to be buggered around by the industry is such a good thing, even if it only teaches a few future stars that you don't have to play by the rules to succeed. Does anyone else know of any pop stars who really would be better off doing something else instead? Celine Dion is one that springs to mind... Dear List, I was told by a friend last night, whilst trying to introduce him to B&S, that Nick Drake sounds a lot like them. somebody else mentioned, earlier, something to do with Nick Drake, I can't remeber who or what they said as I've deleted the message now but I want to know if this is true and if anybody out there can send me some Nick Drake stuff so that I can find out for myself.
