Let's imagine that the sixties pop scene is British football. There are two
Anfields in Britain, one in Liverpool, one in Stirling. Which do you got to
first? Liverpool probably...the Beatles...fifty thousand number ones on the
trot and six consecutive European Cup wins. The atmosphere is electric and
everyone talks funny. While you're in the area you might as well go to
Goodison Park for a ride on the escalators. Cilla Black. Off to Tranmere
Rovers for a bit of Gerry and the Pacemakers. Now you've had enough
Merseybeat for a while, so you leave the Swinging Blue Jeans for another
time. They are that non league team from the place where they filmed the end
credits of Dad's Army that sometimes do quite well in the FA Cup and have
got a comedian for a manager. Instead you decide to visit the other Anfield,
or Annfield, I'm not sure. There you see East Stirlingshire, or some such
gem of a team (again, I'm not sure). Technically they are not very good, but
every now and then there is a bit of excitement, the tea's quite nice for a
change and the people are really friendly. One of the opposing supporters
has brought a big bell to ring instead of a rattle to rattle. Your neighbour
tells him that if he doesn't stop ringing that bloody bell he's going to
stick it right up his arse for him, and you laugh. Just as you are leaving
after ninety minutes of pleasant entertainment an old man with a weather
beaten face comes up to you, grabs your arm and whispers "Lovin' Spoonful,
sonny, Lovin' Spoonful" "What are you on about, old crone?" you ask him. The
man draws your face close to his and hisses "Do you believe in magic? DO
YOU?"
That mysterious old man was the Duke of Haringay on field manoeuvres in his
native Scotland. It's best to take his rants with a pinch of salt and enter
the fantastic Duke Box Dury Competition. My own entry is almost finished,
and I can't wait to see how it fares.
Peter, the Pauper of Pop

If this is true then there will be at least 3 of us. Blimey, there's only 4 other people, 2 sheep and a cat down here, and no, we don't all like the Loving Spoonful as our tractors weren't fitted with radios until 1982 :)

Apologies to Honeymonster for the obvious abuse of his list as some political forum, but :

Thanks luv...a few of these beaurocrats in suits happen to be on the list !!
I think you'll find it's the politicians who make the decisions on swingeing cuts.

You make it sound like the average LG officer doesn't care, and doesn't have a life outside work, and isn't affected in any way !...Like none of us have families and kids or anything.

I don't know which Authority you refer to, but in Devon Education and Social Services haven't done badly at all in terms of budget cuts over the last few years.
If we don't start pumping more money into roads in this part of the world, before long we will all have to walk everywhere anyway.

You are right it is disgusting, but in recent years people like myself have merely been a glove puppet with a politicians arm up yer jacksy.
You are right to moan to your local authority, if only more people would...but the blame lies firmly on Whitehall.
Sorry to get me arse in me hand !

I am sure that almost everyone [male & female] on this list, certainly those of us who went through the British education system will have similar stories to tell of the whole of PE.
My own school PE ordeals experienced at Breezehill Comprehensive School in Oldham could have stepped right out of 'The Headmaster Ritual' song by The Smiths!

It seems to me that now Tigermilk is supposedly fetching 100 to 200 pounds
sterling, someone is bound to bring out a vinyl bootleg, if they haven't done
so already. (and if they have, I'd quite like a copy!).
A bootleg will be a close copy of the original, but with presumably some
inevitable loss of sound quality.
The bootleggers make a load of money by fooling fans, who may never have seen
an original to tell the difference anyway.
The value of the original copies will go down,
The band will not get any royalties or share of profit.
Surely it would be better for them to swiftly bring out a reissue, (maybe on
CD, so there's no problem differentiating new copies from the original).
I guess there are a few fans (me included!) who'll still want to get the
original, but at least if people can buy the thing in one form or another,
the 'street price' will drop to below the point where it is worth someone's
while to bootleg it.
And a lot more people will get to hear the songs! (I particularly prefer the
version of "The State I Am In" to the version on the DOW EP) (Phew! no
stranger to controversy, me!)
In the meantime, my advice if you're offered a copy of Tigermilk in mint
condition is to be very suspicious, there are few records that are over two
years old which don't show signs of wear, on the sleeve at least.
Does anyone know what the band thinks?
(I don't have 'net access, only email, so maybe this stuff has all been
covered before.)

Are we still deciding upon a list-based competition?
Well, Stuart David wrote Ink Polaroids--the list holds a competition of Ink
Polaroids; Stuart David wrote Ink Movies--the list holds a competition of
__________. (Answer: Ink Movies).
Then we will not be repeating ourselves over, just slightly modifying
ourselves. We need something to do whilst waiting for new album.
And, I would like to hear Tracey Thorn c. _A Distant Shore_ sing "Seeing Other
People" and "Ease Your Feet In the Sea". The latter would be perfect due to
her preoccupation/obsession with the ocean in her own songs. I do not really
want to hear her _play_ the songs, just to sing them.
There, I wrote it, now I am crawling back to bed to continue to spend my
time with the flu. Truthfully, the flu is not such a great companion.
Coughing and sniffling

I have an almost-crap compilation (given by an old crap
ex-boyfriend...hehehe) from some 60's obvious hits (California Dreaming
etc), and there are...two songs from the Loving Spoonful in it. And I
always thought they were probably the best on this CD. They sound very nice
to me...although I've never heard anything else from them, neither know who
they really were...

Yes me again! Wait don't go...I'm not rambling that much! oh wait..i
am...daaaamn!
>>And there's nice steel guitar on it. I like Teenage Fanclub very much, but

>>think Rod might just have the edge on them in terms of.....oh dear, I can't
>>think of a suitable word....weightiness.
ALl I keep hearing on the radio is that n-trance cover...I thought it was a
raspy old woman singin 'do ya think i'm sexy!' but it's Rod,it was so weird
when i realised this...Teenage Fanclub hold a special place in my heart, they
play a song for once,I yelled out 'LONG LIVE SCOTLAND!' and Norman goes
'this is for the wee Scottish lass down front' or something..
I love The Concept,it makes me want to spin around in slo-mo circles at the
end..another song that makes me want to spin in slo-mo circles with glitter
flying around is Ash's Darkside/Lightside (or is it the other way round?)
and when I think of Ash I'm thinking you were talkign about Catch and Toby
or one of them looks like Tim Wheeler.
You know what else about Ash,one day I had a biology test and I was gonna do
bad and for soem reason I envisioned Mark Hamilton (bassist of Ash) sitting
in the desk in front of me jsut wearing silver pants and he would grin and
turn around every once in a while and I did really good on that test!I don't
know why..i think he's 'stooopid' but hmmm...just a whole lotta chain
reaction thoughts going on!

said,so i play games to make them think i'm someone else...
(lush) i'm in no position to make demands i have no past,no one else has
done to me what you do..
(gang of four)if i could i'd let you cry on my shoulder i've no friends
either,i absolve you
(gang of four) you don't know who i am,you don't know where i come from from
the soul of this land i am lost and you're soon gone
(spiritualized) i'll always love you honey but i can't be what...i'm..not...
(spiritualized) but i can't help,i can't help falling in love with you
and the belle and sebastian ones:
(b&s)now i'm feeling flat you seem miles away i'm so tired that down on the
pavement i'll lay till the blossom on the tress comes falling on me
(b&s) and feel the city air run past your body (because I love running when
it's dark out...running really fast for no reason and feelign the air run
past my body!)
(b&s) we lay on the bed there kissing just for practice
(b&S) here on my own now after hours, here on my own know on a bus
