Is my mail program up the shoot, or were their only three mails over the
weekend? Very odd. Maybe it's all the students taking their washing home
for the winter
Anyway: the Ivor Cutler competition . Another bumper bag of entries, of
which four people got the answers right. Ivor Cutler played Buster
Bloodvessel in Magical Mystery Tour. Ivor the Engine's scaly friend was
Idris the Dragon. And Idris was a cracking singer in the church choir, a
talent which spookily enough gives us some tangential B&S content.
I took the four correct winners, popped them in the Poetry Society chapeau
and picked one lucky recipient of the Ivor Cutler CD. And the winner was .
(drum roll) . Peter Miller!!!!
Congratulations, Windy! If you send me your address, maybe the CD will get
to you before the New Year.

Quick run through the Beat Patrol show for those who will miss it, as I'm
listening to it just now. Sorry about the comments, just ignore them if
you want. And the tape offer stands.
*** Beat Patrol, Radio Scotland, 5-6pm 21st December 1997 ***
OK - we get all the band members except Mick. They all pick favourite
tracks and we hear three newish B&S recordings and some merry banter.
I've not heard Beat Patrol before but I think the presenter's a bit blown
away by the choices the band make, which is nice. There's quite a bit of
teasing at the beginning by Isobel, Stuart David and Sarah, as anyone who
was around when Stuart joined the chat unexpectedly a couple of nights ago
will expect (ask me for a log :). Richard, Stuart M, Chris and Stevie come
along then and we talk music a bit more.
It's also nice to put voices to erm.. faces or shoes (Pam?) or something I
suppose.
- B&S: Loneliness Of The Middle-Distance Runner -
[What a lovely song - I've actually never heard this as I'm behind on my
session tape scraping and begging]
- Isobel -
Bobby Gentry and Glen Campbell: Little Green Apples
[Cute Campbell link, a present to Isobel from a friend for Christmas
sometime, whooshy swinging soft and sweet, just like Isobel's voice]
- Stuart D -
Tom Waits: Earth Dies Screaming
[Tom in his rougher later more theatrical plonky phase - Stuart likes all
Tom's stuff and very fine it is too.. erm, well I think so - Stuart says
that is what B&S are aiming for - yeah...]
- Sarah -
Queen: Don't Stop Me Now
[OK erm I'll beg ignorance of why on this one so I'll say nothing -
that's what I like about B&S, the little shockers]
- B&S: Slow Graffiti -
[Another new one for woefully ignorant me (can someone do me a tape of the
latest sessions??) - and this is the highlight for me, I can't think
straight when it's on, it's so crushingly beautiful]
- Stuart M -
Madness: whatsitcalled, You're An Embarrassment (?)
[Well everyone knows this - Stuart says it's because he hadn't heard it in
ages]
- Richard -
Miles Davis: toon anyone?
[I start getting very excited here: Miles Davis arranged by Gil Evans,
earlier stuff, staccato and just wonderful; Richard apparently plays
"cabaret drums"]
- Mick -
Chet Baker: Let's Get Lost
[OK I can admit it now: I swoon everytime I hear Chet's trumpet and,
although there's some teasing about his "crooning" I love his voice too -
seems like a wonderful feminine kind of masculine voice. If anyone wants
to talk Chet with me I will forever, and supply copious tapes! Forlornly
romantic and so west coast coooool]
- Chris -
Young MC: Theme from Shaft (remix of Isaac Hayes original)
[Chris's well known rap/groove persuasion coming out here - he says he
doesn't want Stuart M to rap on stage necessarily, but he does really]
- B&S: Just A Modern Rock Song -
[We all know this I think?]
- Stevie -
Yoko Ono and the Plastic Ono Band: Listen The Snow Is Falling
[B side of Christmas by John Lennon - really cute simple Christmas song,
depending on your point of view (Tim J might go all scroogy on us)]
- B&S: We Wish You A Merry Christmas -
[DJ Krush remix]
[Only joking]
Honey
P.S. Hugh's scared of you all now.

Yeah I can probably start returning the hundreds of favours from you
beautiful people by doing some tapes of the B&S radio program too. I
slapped it onto video tape instead of audio, so quite by chance I can,
even though one of my tape players is out of action. So mail me if people
want them - but if others apart from me and Chris could volunteer it'd be
helpful - Linda will keep me if it means she misses The Sweeney.
Chat room thing - we're getting a lot of wanderers, I was going to say
Virgin wanderers, which is probably appropriate, who are just after cheap
sex. So when Tag isn't around they get a bit lost and cause trouble and
chat me up, which is fun sometimes but at others annoying.
The option is to make the chatroom invisible except to those who know -
you lot. But it might be confusing for newcomers and we might have a bit
less fun. Votes to me please.
Honey

a) If I go for a wee boogie after the show on Saturday, can I still
get into the Youth Hostel, or is there a curfew.
Otherwise, anyone suggest a very cheap hotel for the night, or offer
a floor for me. I can bring Jaffa Cakes or flapjacks.
cheers,
chris

Would anyone like to share petrol costs, would like a lift from
Edinburgh to Manchester. Leaving Saturday, whenever-ish, returning
Sunday, lunchtime, early afternoon-ish?
If so, drop me an email, and if I don't reply to that by 5 tonight,
give me a call on 337 7120.

So there I was, tuning in to my favourite radio program, to find out
that it was being 'hosted' by Belle and Sebastian.
I found Belle and Sebastian earlier this year. I was clearing out my
tapes and came across this tape of a radio show. I was idly trying to
work out what it was, whether I should wipe it, when I came across an
intro "Monday morning, wake up...." etc. etc. I was hooked. Peter
Easton, the presenter, exclaimed at the end "Shucks. Don't you think?
Shucks." I suppose that brings us back round to Peanuts.
But anyway, yesterday, all B & S, bar Mr. Trumpet man where in the
studio choosing their favourite records, which included Queen and Tom
Waits. Isobel was charmingly nervously gigly. Some B & S tunes where
played, Slow Graffiti.
I've got it taped if anyone wants the whole thing. Its not
particularly great sound quality, but hey. Lots of jokes about
whether Mr. Murdock should strutt around the stage.
Anyway, love to all,
chris xx

Hi
I just joined the list. I live as far away from Glasgow as could be
conceivably possible, Sydney Australia. Although I did see the Fannies a
week ago and again they played this song by Yo La Tengo, of which I'd love
to know it's name so I could listen to the CD.
Anyhow I do much love Belle and Sebastian, and bought the CD If You're
Feeling Sinister with no preconceptions as to what it would be like, except
the memory of reading somewhere that it was a gem of a CD. I don't have
much money so this was an importamnt purchase for me
Sooooooo, I listened to it once, didnt enjoy it, although thought Nick
Drake and Tindersticks who i adore. Listened to it again, then again, and
suddenly it seeped into me like some of my favourite music. Marvellous
stuff chappies, wonderful playing, beautiful atmospheres and textures and
wow lyrics which are more than worthy of reading and contemplating. I
wonder if they'd attract a mosh in Sydney.
Anyhow if a Belle or Sebastian person reads this, come to Australia, I can
guarantee a good crowd at a decent sized venue and anything else you think
of within reason :)
Anyhow, hi people on the list
Pete

Visit mt website!! This is not a desperate attempt to gain more hits (I don't have a page counter),but I thought you might like it. There is a Belle & Sebastian section, which is not very good, but I had to make the effort, as a sort of pilgrimage. The other reason you should go is so that you can vote for your Album and Single of 1997. I changed the rules of the Album one, so that you could vote for If You're Feeling Sinister, but I am getting votes for Urban Hymns and other such non-delights. Please, for the sake of fab B&S, go and save them from the teeth of that Ashcroft man.
It is at http://www.btinternet.com/~jon.g/

Ha ha!
I haven't even confessed to my friends (except my flatmate who's a 'geek' too)
that I even use the INTERNET , let alone am chatting happily away to a bunch of
strangers in cyberspace.
What would they think? Probably drop me straight away I should imagine, for the
net is still halfway between the preserve of trainspotters and computer nerds
and a way to go before enjoying any sort of credibility.
I made the dire mistake of telling an old bloke at work, who is online at home
too, hoping he would have the sense to refer to it only in hushed whispers, but
at corporate tea-time the other day, he suddenly piped up " 'surfed' into any
good 'websites' recently ;-) ?" to which my workmates turned round and stared at
me incredulously, like all my clothes had suddenly vanished or something.
I muttered something about my flatmate buying a computer and 'internal modems
bog standard these days' , but the die was cast and am forced to wear 'GEEK'
tattoed across my forehead for all to see.
They don't know what they're missing
