What a fiendish competition! My entry is already whirling
through cyberspace on the way to the Poetry Society.
Hopefully they will give Trousers a big fat raise for using
his initiative to promote poetry at its best. Huzzah!
What an exciting digest today! At the risk of going over old
ground, yes, Gabrielle Drake (Gabby to her friends) is that
bloke out of Crossroads. I don't know if it's featured in
the new book, but there is a touching photograph in
existence of Nick pushing Sandy around reception in his
wheelchair. A light hearted off screen moment. I nearly met
Gabrielle Drake once, in Hastings. She was appearing in some
play or other with the equally majestic Ian Lavender. But I
didn't meet her, so I can fuck off.
I almost bought Deep Purple As and Bs today, but I'm
frightened of the Bs. Maybe tomorrow, as Badfinger so
memorably sang. Best hair in the history of pop.
Tag, my "undercarriage" bears no resemblance to that of a
bull, and I've been here all along, it's just that my
response time has been reduced by becoming a digest person,
instead of a cutting edge normal listee. But I do indeed
want to rock with Led Zep.
I forgot....there was an interview with Gabrielle Drake
about her brother in the NME a few years ago. Their father
is Charlie Drake!

GINGER IS THIS FRIDAY!
EVERYONE, BE PREPARED FOR MORE UK-INDIE WITH A SOUPY TWIST. WITH ALL
NEW PROMO VIDEOS DIRECT FROM THE UK! HOPE TO SEE YOU ALL THERE.
Other ginger dates include: january 2nd, 16th and 30th.
Open letter to the cities sweetest parvenu,
Welcome to ginger...or welcome back. This letter is an introduction to a
Three-dimensional joy-ride. So it seems fitting to invite you to relax,
loosen your belt and perhaps pour yourself another aqua vitae.
Long has Toronto suffered the sticky (often mundane) battle of the
nightclub. Commercial castles of music are popping up everywhere but
beyond the architectural obtuseness, top forty dance beats and
Meat-packaging atmosphere there is little marketability left in the
budget for substance. Ginger is a new discretion invested in the passion
for new UK indie, eclectic beats, sparkling orchestral pop and even some
moog pulsations but still vibrating the resonance of the beau ideal
past. This night also hopes to pass a little debauchery, shallow flash
and designer sneers into the aesthetic of the night. Ginger is
unapologetically a vainglorious evening.
Some of the bands you may be titillated with include, David Devant and
His Spirit Wife, My Life Story, Divine Comedy, Rialto, Travis, the
Experimental Pop Band, Momus, Elcka, Lucky 15, Dubstar, Babybird, Olive,
Orlando, the Weekenders, Mulu, Ether, Cola Boy, Belle & Sebestian,Peach,
Corduory, Denim and favourites include Bowie, the Jam, the Stones,Pulp,
Suede, the Smiths, Echo and the Bunnymen, the Verve, Spiritualized,
sometimes Blur and many more.
GINGER HAS HER NEXT APPEARANCE ON THIS FRIDAY DECEMBER 19th...1997
Ginger is Djed by Elvis Aristotle and Hosted by Lady Somerset.
Bohobird1 also hosts and finances this extravagant night out. Darrell
and Nora our appreciations also extend to their efforts.
GINGER WILL BE AT THE BIG BOP THIS FRIDAY. BIG BOP IS LOCATED AT THE
CORNER OF QUEEN AND BATHURST.
We have also managed to keep the drink prices lower than previous big
bop events (orange alert)!
19+/$4....because you know you want to.
"Go back to the eras of the highest decorative art and you will find it
a time when the workman had beautiful surroundings; for the best periods
of the decorative arts have been the ages of costume, when men and women
wore noble attire and walked in beauty that could pass at once into
marble and stone to be the admiration of all succeeding ages." Oscar

Right - time to give out some punishment. My mate Hugh who is coming
to Manchester joined the list and reckons you lot are all spotty
adolescents - he wants to know when you all get dirty (I told him
come along to the chat but he's shy). You'll have seen his weak
efforts to leave but he's still on so far hahaha so time for some
stick probably - Keith or Peter?
He also quite usefully sent out this info re. Mancs if it's not too
late, and it would be fun if Manchester residents or ex-pats could
violently disagree with him:

So that's it. You might also meet BlueBoy, a welsh lawyer, a
big-nosed english lecturer and a gay buddhist in Manchester with me -
look out for the area cordonned off by the police.
Oh and see you in #Sinister tonight, cos, let's face it, Wednesday
isn't the meet up day, it's everyday.

Hullo people....
ermm well since i'm going to the 2 and now it looks like the 3 B&S gigs in
manchester, and have worked out how i'm getting there from birmingham and
back to london on monday....ug...
(though not anywhere to stay - details of the youth hostel were mentioned
but i missed them...can anybody help???)
i figured since i have 2 mins at the end
of a very mad day on the pysch. ward where i work, i'd better v.briefly
say a proper hello, and publicly regret not having had time to read the
digests over the last however many months its been....
---------
that was yesterday postboned.....today was slightly less bonkers in the
Strauss Nut House, but only slightly less.
this morning was however very beautiful.
a spontaneous art group that sprung up this morning was accompanied by
tigermilk wafting around and pacifying the ward which was lovely, partic.
hearing 'making lifesize models of the velvet underground in clay' (which
is a bit beyond me) as i scuplted my own little fox(for obvious reasons)....
which even ended up looking quite fox like, which shocked even me. Well
B&S won over a couple of patients of very differing ages and background, and
well,i had a lovely morning listening to the tape, with the sessions/demos ben
did me too......top therapy i say :)....and we're getting a music
therapist for a bit soon.....B&S will sufice in the mean time.
tommorow more chaos ensues with the patients xmas party....60 minces pies
baked already......mmmmm now what tape can i infiltrate into the pile of
party tapes.....:)
so anyway am late for yoga so gotta run, but if anybody can help with
youth hostel (details/who'll be there??) or any other suggestions....
and i hope to see some of you on the 27+28th......i'll no doubt be in
purple jeans.... and maybe a mogwai t-shirt.
i don't know what noise an excited bunny makes, but ermm oh it's been a
long day...
happy thursday

STRING BEAN JEAN
D---------------------------------G-------------
I got my fingers dirty at the school of rock
D-----------------------------------A-----------
Yeah I got my fingers dirty so I took a walk
D---------------------------------------F#----------------Bm-------
I went up to the country park and hung around till after dark
----------G---------------
Till the girls got home
----------D---------------
Till the girls got home
Did I tell you 'bout the one I know, she's on the rag
She spent the summer day inside her sleeping bag
Yeah she spent the summer day inside until it's time to work
And she works all night
Cause the girl's all right
The girls have got a house that's like a caravan
And it's like your holidays whenever you go round
And we always have a laugh and then we all get in the bath
To save on the leccy bill
Me & Jo & Phil'
Bm---------------------------G-------
I had to leave them in the morning
--------------------------------D--
I left the keys around the way
--------------------A--
I had to catch a bus
I had to leave them in the morning
I left the keys down in the caf'
I had to go to work
And when Jo was short of cash I had to give her some
But I didn't really mind cause I was fit for once
So she paid the leccy bill and got the shopping and she still had
Some for the cinema
So we all went out
She asked me "Do I need to lose a bit of weight?"
And I told her "Don't be stupid 'cause you're looking great"
And I call her String Bean Jean because the label on her jeans says
Seven to eight years old - well that's pretty small
Seven to eight years old - that's pretty small
Seven to eight years old - that's pretty small
Seven to eight years old

>Actually, America does know about B&S. I live in Canada, but much of the

Not to mention the NY & LA Times.

EMI-Capitol was the Enclave's mother, and EMD was the distributor. Doesn't
seem
to be any lack of IYFS or the ep's on shelves in NYC, but i don't know if
other
parts of the country are having troubles keeping it stocked.
On a completely unrelated note, we're listening to the new Gavin Bryars cd,
The Sinking of the Titanic. It's a concept project, one long piece of music,
mostly strings with the occasional single piano note thrown in and a bit of
brass. It seems the Titanic strikes the iceberg in the opening minute of the
album; then it slowly sink for the next hour. It's quite lovely.

Hello everybody ...
ok, it's vote time!
I've found two venues in Manchester, which are completely different and
both have their advantages & disadvantages, so i want everyone elses
opinions please!
Venue #1.
Is a cafe/bar thingy. They do bottled beer only (£1.95) and coffee and
cakes, but no food. This venue would be for the saturday, but it's a
little way away from the Town Hall.
Venue #2.
Is a pub who are across the road from the Town Hall. They do normal pub
stuff (drinks/crisps etc), but no food on weekends, and only a coffee
machine in the upstairs. They would be open for both the sat ('til
12pm) & sun (til 10.30pm) gigs. There is also the possibility of using
the function room on the saturday before 6pm.
(ohmigosh, they've just started playing Ride on Xfm ... yipppeeee!)
ok, so now it's up to you all! could people either mail me or the list
with their preference, as well as what times you think would be
appropriate to meet-up, considering doors are at 7.30pm?
let us know what you want boys & girls!
cheers,
katrina.

There are a number of American B&S fans out there. As of last week, IYFS
has Soundscanned 11, 090 copies! So realistically IYFS has sold around
20,000 or so in America since soundscan isn't in most of the mom&pop record
shops, where a lot of B&S is sold. And even though the Enclave folded,
stores have no problem getting IYFS from distributors.
