Hi
I just joined the list. I live as far away from Glasgow as could be
conceivably possible, Sydney Australia. Although I did see the Fannies a
week ago and again they played this song by Yo La Tengo, of which I'd love
to know it's name so I could listen to the CD.
<<<<<
hmmm. if it's an instrumental, long-ish, chances are it's I Heard You
Looking, from Yo La's truly outstanding _Painful_ album. Teenage
Falnclub have been known to include it in their live sets from time
to time...
other recommended YLT albums to explore: _I Can Hear The Heart
Beating As One_ (the most recent one), _Electr-O-Pura_, _May I
Sing With Me_ ....
and the odds & sods collection from last year _Genius + Love = YLT_
is pretty damned wonderful too.
the holidays exhaust me ---rh

Belle and Sebastianly speaking, I had a pretty great day today. The
only thing that I was missing (except for Tigermilk, obviously) was the
"Lazy Line Painter Jane" single, so I stopped into Monster records here
in Chapel Hill (where I had bought all of my other B&S stuff)
to...y'know, just to *see*. And, obviously, I found it. And it is as
great as everyone said it is. I would have to say that it's my favorite
of the three singles. But then again, I'm a sucker for male/female
vocals.
By the way, could anyone give some more info on the female singer in
"Lazy Line..."? Does anyone else think she sounds a bit like Kate Bush?
So, anyway, it's not that difficult to find B&S stuff in the states. I
mean, Chapel Hill is a great town, but Boston or San Fran it ain't! And
I managed to find all three singles and IYFS in the two non-chain record
stores with relative ease. So look around a little more. It's
there....

the aftershow sounds brilliant. Just one thing, does anyone know about
when this'll end? I wanted to get a train back but I think I'll have
missed the last one by the time it all winds up. If someone could try
and give me some times for stuff, tat'd be great.
At the mo i don't even know when to get to manchester for. On the sat
btw. Anything sorted David/Katrina?
thanks a lot. and remeber people, i'll be the one with the STAR wand,
probably singing a really bad song, like Wham! or something. I'm only
going to listen to B&S that day, and be very Belleandsebastiany!
however that is.

Extract from Planet SoundÂ’s music criticsÂ’ Top 30 Singles Of 1997, UK Teletext
p484, December 20 1997:-
"26: BELLE & SEBASTIAN 3..6..9...Seconds Of Light
Swoon! Sigh! B&S arenÂ’t so much a love affair as an addiction. This, the third
EP of ‘97 from the ‘sensitive’ Scots combo, included five slices of jangly
genius with THE best lyrics of ‘97. We guarantee you’d hate this. Probably."
And at Number One......
"1: BELLE & SEBASTIAN Dog On Wheels EP
Well, OK, you wonÂ’t have heard this (or even OF it), but at least we didnÂ’t go
for Bittersweet Symphony like every other pop hack in Britain! A four-song CD,
this starts with a Simon & Garfunkel-esque amble through fields of whimsy,
slides into the beautiful State That I Am In, takes in an anorexia-themed
String Bean Jean and ends with the ‘jaunty’ Belle & Sebastian. Trust us,
youÂ’ll know who they are soon."
Singles lower in the list include the likes of Pavement, Blur, All Saints,
Radiohead, The Verve, Prodigy, Hanson, Backstreet Boys, Helen Love, Spice
Girls and the Chemical Brothers.

OK - B&S chat part 1. Stuart David sent me REPLIES to Susannah's very
shy questions - they do READ the list sometimes you know :)
This should scare her pants off :)

So there you go, NOT a "bit rude" so any followups?
Oh, and my main server at work is buggered just after I finished work
for Xmas so the Sinister mailing service might be, ahem,
unpredictable just now. Bear with me and I'll go in and kick its
arse sometime this weekend.
Finally, there's plans afoot to see who can be amongst the elite of
saddest nerds on the list - a chat on Xmas day. Would be geeks who
havent got chat software are invited to post messages on Christmas day
to show that they haven't got any friends too.

To all of us poor, jealous American fans who are hoping to see B&S on PBS and
wondering when the Sessions at W. 54th show will air -- and who were hoping
it would be on Dec. 27th to take the sting out of the Manchester shows we'll
miss:
For what it's worth, I got an e-mail today from Chris Douridas, the host of
Sessions at West 54th. I had sent off the question several weeks or more ago
-- just 2 days ago was bitching about him not replying, and today here it is.
In answer to my query about when the B&S segment would be airing, he said, "I
think the Belle & Sebastion segment airs in February."
I also had heard rumor that it wasn't going to air at all, so this is sort of
favorable all in all.
But, since the message was kind of vague, I'd tune in on 12/27 anyway...

Hot off the presses from the 4AD list:
4AD, troubled by the fact that Gus Gus hasn't been doing as well as they hoped, and that they've basically sucked for the last seven years is now deleting most of their catalog.
So pick up those Cocteau Twins Eps you've been meaning to buy but just haven't found the time.
Off to procure Spirea-X's Fireblade Skies

OK
Saturday 27th...Aftershow party....Upstairs at the Star and Garter,
Fairfield St, Manchester (home of the legendary Smile club)...Smashing
tunes...Disco dancing....All welcome....£2 to get in (to cover room
hire and fliers...we are NOT, repeat NOT, making any money...drinks
are pretty cheap (especially for Londoners)...It's a bit of a walk
from the Town Hall, but there's a tram stop outside the Town Hall, so
you can get a tram to Piccadilly Train Station and it's near there.
And a taxi rank too. We'll be doing fliers for it hopefully with maps
and things. Band may well come, but don't mob them cos they'll be
scared, and they deserve a place to dance till they drop.
Music: You can probably guess: stuff across the ages whether 60's
pop, Northern Soul, or 80's/90s indie, and all kinds of pop jewels in
between.
Any q's mail me.
Please come along cos it will be fun, and we have good taste!
Love and kisses
