These are indeed good, there's also, if you're interested, a bootleg
floating around that's got different versions of Double Exposure and Blank
Generation. Plus a couple of tracks that I don't know what they are. There's
a different live version of Little Johnny Jewel on this too. V.Good indeed.
And right enough, "The Blow Up" is available on double CD now.
Did you know... Belle and Sebastian watch Television.
Cheers,
Keith.

I discovered B&S thanks to Jody Thompson of the NME raving about them on
the NME's chat page. At the time I was in San Francisco (this must have
been in about July) and found IYFS all over the place, much to my joy.
See you a week on Sunday!!!

OK! Due to overwhelming public demand (well, Peter and Paul asked anyway)
I've decided to set a new competition to win Ivor Cutler's 'A Wet Handle'
(Creation) on CD.
The questions comes in two parts:
a) Ivor Cutler appeared in the misguided Beatles film 'Magical Mystery
Tour'. What was his character's name?
b) Ivor the Engine was a small train in North Wales. What was the name of
his dragon friend, and what was the dragon's special talent?
Answers, sent to me, please, by 5pm on Friday.
In the event of a tie, I'll pick an entrant at random.

you that:

>> Sorry, I just thought you outght to know:
Hurrah for Sheffield and its fantastic snowfall track record! Probably the
best two weeks of my life were accompanied (and partially caused) by the
gorgeous avalanche of January 1996. I was the only person awake to pad through
those first fat flakes that fell all around at 3AM on an early weekday morning
in Crookes. <sigh> No foxes, but perhaps that would have overegged the Walls
Romantico pudding. Truly, Sheffield can put on a true snow show. Not like
this piddling town London with its pathetic mean-minded little dots of
half-baked flakes (tip - never attempt to bake snow) that melt before they even
reach the overheated concrete.
The State I am In (parts 17-24):
I confessed to joining in #sinister to some friends last night. They were not
impressed. I think they were worried I might end up married to a club-footed
spinster from Arkansaw or something. It was all so difficult to justify to an
outsider. Even the mailing list. "What on earth do you talk about?" scoffed
Suzanne. "Um" said I. As for workmates, they find it amusing enough that I
should even be looking at a website about a band called Belle & Sebastian. And
when I said I couldn't go for a drink because I needed to get home to record a
session off the radio, they assumed I was joking. When it became clear I
wasn't, one said "Wouldn't it be simpler just to buy the album?". It's a
different world...
Important (for me) bit: I've only got 2 days left to abuse work internet
facilities before I retire to my country seat. I think I may have missed the
final Manchester meet up details - are they posted somewhere? Could some kind
person point me in the right direction.
Xmas cheer to you all.
Love from Nick (or, as the mailing list archive has it - [no name] - I like
that) xxx

Indeed, Television are one of the greats. As an addendum given to the
misinformation the press often puts about, "Adventure" by Televsion is a
fantastic LP, you've all heard of Marquee Moon, well, enough's been written
about that already. "Adventure" is great - and often derided as a poor
cousin the previous, don't believe what you read. It was that attitude that
split up this amazing band in the first place. Go out and buy their records
now. Also, if you can pick up a copy of Tom Verlaine's first LP, get a hold
of that too ("Tom Verlaine") as it's almost perfect too.
The main reason for pointing this out is that the number of people I
know who have Marquee Moon, but don't have Adventure is astonishing -
they've all read that apparently, it's not very good.
Cheers,
Keith.

A few things:
1. Nick Drake. I have been listening to "way to blue" many many times
and I think that it is a truly wonderful record. It is all too
apparent why comparisons are made with B&S. Someone mentioned this
before, I'm sure, but a lucid biography of Nick Drake says that he was
a star of track and field (see
http://www.musicblvd.com/cgi-bin/tw/2777614882191567_105_4277) an
interesting connection. And is the song title Hazy Jane just a
coincidence?
2. Joanna (?), cover star of Tigermilk, works in the library at my
sister's University. My sister recognised her because she knows the
cover but also because she and my friend Fraser met Stuart Murdoch and
Joanna going sledging in Kelvingrove Park last winter.
3. It's true, Stuart Murdoch used to box at University (Peter has
already averred this but now I have proof!)
4. Photo Jenny is a very very good song.
5. I forgot to mention for the benefit of Paul's list that another
owner of Tigermilk is Fraser (see above) McNaughton from Edinburgh.
6. Keith - I'm sure "a day on the list is like a day on the farm"
is a paraphrase of a line in Aliens (spoken by the sergeant). Am I
worng?
