Hi,
I haven't tried to post to the list before, though I've been on it
for awhile. My name is Julia, I'm 19 and I'm a studenti. Dull, I
know. I don't have a vinyl copy of Tigermilk, and I warn everyone
not to ask me why, cause I'll sob the whole tragic story to you!
For the register I know of one guy who has a copy. He's called Jack
and lives on Sauchiehall St.
The real reason I posted is to say that I desperately want to go to
the Manchester gigs, but don't want to go on my own. If you want to
go with me or will let me go with you then mail me. A big group
would be best for obvious, though crap, reasons (not that I want to
seem paranoid or implicate anyone on the list as a psycho!! ) as I
think someone else wrote too. I'll be travelling from Glasgow or
possibly Aberdeen. I don't know anyone in Manchester, and I don't
have a car so it's public transport and a hostel (are they open this time
of year?) I suppose. I'm bad at organising, but will try if I have
to. Basically if anyone is organising to go as a group, then please
count me. I hpoe this garbbled message doesn't put you off
contacting me.
And my claim to fame is I've done my laundry standing next to Stuart
Murdoch. But I didn't dare speak to him - I know, I'm a wimp.
A 3000 word essay for Monday becons, Love Julia xxx

I know the dates but where are B+S playing in Manchester.
In an earlier email it was stated that ticket details would be revealed
next week. Can we have a day please so I can camp infront of my
computer.
Also... out of curiosity
Approx. how many people are on this mailing list?, because I think
these alone will fill the gigs.

I tend to hold the rather blinkered view that I watch Exeter
because I love them, and I listen to Belle And Sebastian because I love
them. B&S tend to be a lot more beautiful, but ECFC certainly have that
air of the shambolic when they play live:-).
I have heard it said that the reason we support lower division
clubs is because we revel in the failure. If that is true (and I'm sure
it is for some) then it tends to spookily echo the feelings of those who
want their favourite indie band to stay their own little secret.
Exeter are going to win the FA Cup this year, anyway;-). And B&S
will have a number one LP. And the world will turn overnight into a big
blue orange (who said that?).
Perhaps we footy lovers hould take this off-list?
One more thing on this subject. Exeter are defensively naive.
Are B&S aggressively naive?!

POP anarchy...now there's a phrase I haven't heard in years,
fair sent a little aged shiver down my spine. Don't I sound like an old
codger? But yeah, '86-87, Razorcuts, (hooray!) Chesterfields (boo),
McCarthy, Talulah Gosh, Jasmine Minks, wedding Present, Wolfhounds, The
Claim, Emily, The Orchids and more, all at Exeter Arts Centre in a
relatively short space of time. It seemed like a maddeningly slow
trickle then, but looking back, I feel so lucky. Even if we had to
arrange some of those gigs ourselves. If nothing's happening, make it
happen, and all that.

How about singing in tthe support band for the first McCarthy
gig in the South-West of England? Talulah Gosh? Jasmine Minks?
Come back! I haven't told you the one about.....

It's interesting that people mention the idea of different voices singing "seeing other people" considering that in the sessions it's sung by three different members: Stevie, Isobel, and Stuart. Perhaps this was intentional and I was just too dumb to notice.
Claims to fame: Picture of me in Tuesdays Boston Globe. Subject I won't mention but fellow listy Paul Dean was there too.
B&S related:
Surely first DJ to play B&S in Boston area. Back last December I played State I'm In on my old radio show Sugar Buzz (WMBR Cambridge) in my "Best of '96" show. (Similar to Peels festive 50.) I know I know ZBC could have played B&S first but I doubt it because they don't have Tigermilk.
Interviewed Stuart M. and Chris in first issue of my fanzine (Candy Factory). Perhaps first American interview of Stuart. (He was rather enigmatic in the interview though, but perhaps my questions were a bit annoying.)
Met Chris and the Stuarts at the taping. Nice meeting although I felt stupid and couldn't figure anything to say. Met Sarah too and she had nice things to say about Candy Factory.
Was supposed to give tour of Boston but you know the story of the gigs...

Hello!
I have a question for the ranks in the UK...being in the US, I don't get to hear the radio sessions and whatnot where you have heard the songs unavailable in record-form (or CD for that matter). I'm wondering how many songs are in B&S' repertoire that aren't on any of the releases? I've seen "Modern Rock Song" mentioned, as well as a few others. Can a kind soul send a list of all of them? I saw them here in NYC in Sept. (the Sessions and the Sunday night show), and fell instantly in love with both "Sleep the Clock Around" and "Roller Coaster..."
Thanks!
Paige
p.s. As for claims to fame....I told Mary Lou Lord she had great shoes on once and she looked at me like I had three heads and I saw Neutral Milk Hotel & Olivia Tremor Control in Boston with Rivers Cuomo from Weezer, who is so tiny, I wanted to feed him and take care of him and keep him warm like a mother bird.

Hi my name is Liz Daplyn (ok it's a wierd surname, I didn't ask
to be born to a Yorkshire/Cornish family with a Flemish name, did I?)
and I'm currently studying on a Foundation course in Art & Design in
Kent and also applying to Fine Art degrees at university. I'm 19 and
feel no need to apologise for it, kids. I play the flute and recorders
(yes, it is a proper instrument!) quite well, and the guitar very badly.
I also sing in a rather high and ridiculous voice, and speak Spanish
(A-grade at A-level last year, not to boast or anything).
I really should go and get my portfolio together as the deadline
for Oxford is next Friday, but I'd really rather sit in the nice warm
library than trek down to the studio in the bowels of the building
(looks like a prison, highly appropriate for an art college, don't you
think?).
I like B&S (obviously, but I just thought I'd post that for any
morons out there), Sparklehorse, Tindersticks, Rialto (anyone heard the
new single? It's ace!), Nick Drake, Kenickie, Radiohead, The Divine
Comedy, various other bands of taste and quality, but DEFINITELY
DEFINITELY NOT My Life Story - take your tiara and insert it up the
orifice of your choice.
My birthday is the anniversary of the Battle of Hastings (14th
October), which means what you want it to (and that I'm a Libran).
So, that's me - note my astounding talent, sparkling wit and
devastating intelligence. Do keep in touch, y'all.
Lots of something, Liz

Hi,
I'm new here and only have "If You're Feeling Sinister", which I love. I
live in Toronto, Canada, so it's impossible to find any eps at all, I was
going to order them from Parasol but I'm making a trip to Boston in a
while, so I'll just get them then. I recognise some names from the
indiepop list on here.
claim to fame:
Talking to Tanya Donelly for 20 minutes in her tour bus when she had
pneumonia (just 2 weeks ago!), and having her smile at me from the stage
and taking lots of pictures.
about me: (which isn't as interesting as one might think)
I'm 18, and in my last year of highschool, since Ontario has 5 years of it.
I like Can and Wire and Pavement and Galaxie 500 and Pram and Mogwai and
B+S (obviously) and lots others, but I won't bore you with a list. I play
guitar, but it seems like everyone does. I like hockey and photography, I
just bought a new camera and have yet to test it out. And I'm flying to
Boston in about 10 days! I've never been before, so this is a real treat.
I'm a salesgirl at Eaton's, which is an almost upscale Canadian department
store. I work in Children's Wear, so if anyone needs to know about kids
shoes, strollers, carseats or clothes, just ask me. I know far too much.
truly,
jessica

Seeing Other People
When I first heard this song my initial impression was, and still is,
that it was about a perhaps early teen boy dealing with feelings of
confused sexuality.
I picture two boys, attracted to each other, and the same sex in
general, but who are struggling to come to terms with this - hence
they tell each other they are 'kissing just for practice' and that if
'I remain passive and you just want to cuddle...we wont get in a
muddle...'
Yeah, basically I think it's about what happens when this particular
boy realises he is gay - how he deals with it and what sort of
thoughts go through his mind at this time.
I think the line 'you're gonna have to change and you're gonna have
to go with girls, you'd be better off at least they know where to put
it' is pretty much the definitive proof that the song has at least
something to do with homosexuality - however whether my particular
reading is accurate or not, I dont know, but it works for me and
that's what I got out of it.
