In response to the person who asked why all the spring chickens were
apologising for being young, well, I can't really answer that, except
to say that I am definitely not sorry for being 19!!
Katrina!
I'm sure you said sometime last week that the details of the
Manchester gig(s) were going to be released the next day, and that
you'd let us all know that day. Maybe I've missed the message and the
dates are all sold out by now, at which point I would seriously have
to contemplate becoming a monk, devoting myself to a contemplative
life...
This Sarah records thing is, I'm afraid to say, going straight over
my head. Zooom!
Oh yeah, I'm a production on our student radio station and today I
got the presenters to play 'Le Pastie...'; woah, cool!!
I nearly keeled over when I saw 'Dog on Wheels' and '3.. 6.. 9..' in
the (not very extensively stocked) CD library in the studio.
To whoever was going on about Suede and the Manics:
the thing with the Manics, and maybe to a much lesser extent Suede,
was that they new and even advertised the fact that there was so much
pretense to them.
The Manics gave the music scene a much-needed kick up the arse when
they exploded onto it, and while B&S haven't exactly exploded onto
the scene, they look like giving it a good punch in the face (ie. NME
and all that).
That's it for now,
Later,
Chris.

And I would bet that I am the only Swansea City fan on this list. I
think I'm the only one in Scotland. I go to about 6 games a
season. My friends think I'm mad...

Here is the Saturday CMJ Show Set List from Sept. 6th:
Loneliness of A Middle-Distance Runner
Modern Rock Song
Judy and the Dream of Horses
Seymour Stein
Fox in the Snow
Seeing Other People
My Wandering Days Are Over
Simple Things
I Could Be Dreaming
Get Me Away From Here, I'm Dying
What Goes On
My friend actually snagged one of B&S' setlists from the show and put it up
in the record store where he works in NYC, so I sometimes go just to look
at it. What Goes On wasn't on their actual set list, but was amazing live,
and Stuart danced up a storm...

New to the list and just exploding with pleasure that so many people love B&S
and POP! so bloody much. And such pleasant conversation. Reminiscent of
early indiepop-l days (if anyone remembers). And even a few old faces,
Alistair, Andy... So, my first post and so many things to say...
Myself: Frighteningly 30 already and still feeling 16. A punk-rock librarian
stranded in a once POP-friendly Bristol. There in the early days of C86 and still
sort of here despite occasional digressions (I once gave up on 'indiepop' for a
couple of years solely because of the relentless mediocrity of the likes of
Bouquet). Married now with a baby - Sean Matthew (named after Matt Haynes
but don't tell my wife*) 3 weeks old today. Responsibility at last mixed in with
occasion irresponsibility when I can get away with it. No Tigermilk I'm afraid
(maybe someone might help me out with a tape sometime. I'd be SO SO
grateful (not "so-so" - you know what I mean)).
Sarah: Clearly they went off the boil a wee bit post Saropoly (certainly with
their albums, less so with the singles) but there are still treasurable moments -
Aberdeen for one (Beth, I think the Duke was being naughty - I don't think he
meant it). But I bought them all anyway (apart from either 12" single - I still have
some principles). The thing about Sarah which was always just as important as
the music was the politics, and they never really let anyone down. And I'm
certain that all non-cynical B&S fans worth their salt would find many, many
things to love in the Sarah tapestry if they'd only dip their toe in the water...
Ignore these disbelievers!!
Football: What is it with B&S and internet football fans? This surely rides
wholly against what one might expect the B&S fan stereotype to be. Anyway I'm
a Chelsea fan of 22 years standing (so no gloryhunting jibes) and am a
member of the mailing list. So there. Oh, and I read somewhere that supporting
a lower-league club was the football equivalent of being an indie-fan. Any
comments you Grecians or Hornets?
Bedford 1986: Nigel, I'm guessing that the Razorcuts gig you mentioned was
the legendary one also starring Talulah Gosh and the Pastels (*imagine* that
line-up!). I WAS THERE! I travelled up from Darkest Essex, didn't have
anywhere to stay and went home finally getting back at 8.30 the next morning.
Wonderful gig, evoking such nostalgia for *the* summer of POP anarchy. I'd
give anything to get a copy of the video and perhaps catch a glimpse of my 19
year-old self swathed in youthful cool and an uber-smart flowery anorak...
And I wanted to nick one of your cool posters too but I was too scared. Nigel,
please let me know if you can help.
Claims to Fame: Promoting the first McCarthy gig in the North-East of
England and talking to Roy Hudd once when I was about 6. One of these is the
highlight of my life.
Naivete: And finally for some kind of proper B&S content. I love them, they
move me. They make me feel like someone discovering POP for the first time
and it's a long time since I've felt like that. Clearly most of you feel exactly the
same. The lyrics are *so* unusual and sensitive and insightful. Quite
marvellous. But does anyone else think that just occasionally words will come
out that sound a little like a college music project. Awkward and clumsy, slightly
naive. Examples you say...well...most of 'Fox in the Snow' for a start. And 'Dylan
in the Movies'. Now I've gone and said it I'm racking my brain for other
examples but I just can't think. Basically, just now and again I'll be listening and
the words will jar slightly...My point is, if I have one, simply that the band seem
to have this wonderful gift and are mostly using it to the full but now and again
they'll fill in the gaps with something less artistically divine. Ah well. I still love
'em.

*I suggested Stuart and Ruud for names too but wasn't given the time of day.
So Matt it was.

I don't know if anyone's posted this yet (I've had trouble reading all these
messages), but my local record store's distributor has the "Modern Rock Song"
EP scheduled for Dec. 5 release. Is this accurate?

Apologies if this has already been mentioned. (I'm on the digest version
so I don't get all the posts immediately. BTW Paul, I did use your cool
new archive search to look for it in recent posts.)
The CMJ web site (http://www.cmjmusic.com/Newpicks/cmj.html) featured the
new EP as a "Pick of the Day" on Tuesday, November 4. In a gushing
review, CMJ compares the music of B&S to migrating butterflies and refers
to Stuart Murdoch as CUDDLY! Ha, wonder what he'd think of that! Read the
full review below.

better get over the thrill of sound samples soon or she'll be rightfully
fired.)

BELLE AND SEBASTIAN
3 ... 6 ... 9 Seconds of Light EP
Jeepster, Unit 60, Canalot Production Studios, 222 Kensal Road, London W10
5BN U.K.
Sound Samples: "A Century Of Fakers" (ISDN), "Le Pastie De La
Bourgeoisie" (ISDN), "A Century Of Fakers" (28.8), "Le Pastie De La
Bourgeoisie" (28.8)
The seven members of Belle and Sebastian make incomparably beautiful
music. Led by the cuddly Stuart Murdoch, the band's sublime pop flits
from your speakers like so many migrating butterflies. This new EP's first
song "A Century of Fakers," is a play on "A Century of Elvis," from the
band's last EP, Lazy Line Painter Jane. The revamped lyrics and soft,
enchanting melody are framed by carnival keyboards and a slowish cello.
"Le Pastie De La Bourgeoisie" begins with the ghostly guitar from
spaghetti westerns, and continues with a rolling, wagon-wheel beat that
would make Serge Gainsbourg proud. "Beautiful" is just that, a sad tale of
blindness woven by Murdoch's lyrics while the instruments build and burst
behind him. The last track is more railroad rhythm with trumpet, but
listen further for the hidden acoustic track at the end, which appears
like an epilogue for a dream and contains the near-perfect line "Belle and
Sebastian/on the radio/and we're really sorry/for all the trouble we've
caused." Apology accepted.
