Yes, I think that's where they were from. They had a song
called Whistling in the Dark, about the miners' strike, so
they might have been loony lefties like The Style Council
and The Redskins, who also had cracking songs about or
inspired by the miners' strike.
I'm not sure, but I think Easterhouse estate is famous for
having no pubs or shops. Legend has it that you're unlikely
to get out alive if you go for a visit. I suppose that's
just idle stereotyping, but I'm not going to find out for
myself, because I'm a chicken. Kelvingrove scares me.

Indeed - no amenities at all which was a mistake they recitified when they built the Newtowns about 5 years later, Cumbernauld (where I used to live as a kid) had plently of shops and amenities... just no pavements - you can view this fact in Gregory's Girl.
Keith.

My name's Paige, I'm 24, and I am a newly annointed resident of New York City. I work in publishing doing Sales & Marketing stuff and my favorite Belle & Sebastian is easily "You're Just A Baby, " followed closely by "Judy." When I'm not working or listening to B&S, I'm watching South Park in an effort to perfect my Cartman immitation.

two brief mentions of b&s in today's music papers, both in
the letters pages. someone asks which one's belle and which
one's sebastian and someone else has them down as band of
the year.
Easterhouse: always reminds me of the fatima mansions - both
were named after housing estates.
alan rankine: ran the aforementioned music course at stow
college. there's an ink polaroid that covers this with b&s
playing a slow piano version of party fears two (or was it
the other one?) at a gig in france.

i've noticed that it's the older ones amongst us who have

i doubt mr shumsky had very little to do with what was and
wasn't released on sarah (else bouquet would be on there,
surely). sarah, in my eyes, was good to the last drop and
those people who gave up at 40 or 50 or whatever missed out
on some great tunes.
and, from an earlier post:

which i find an odd thing to say given that the second(?)
st. etienne single was a rather straight cover of a field
mice tune...
someone then went on to slag them for releasing stuff on cd.
so they're meant to try new and exciting things but not
embrace new technology (especially when the choice was issue
things on cd and vinyl or not sell enough to re-coup your
costs, adapt or die). curious.
sorry paul, i know you wanted an end to this but there were
things i couldn't let go. still, more relevant than talking
about football, eh?

[Hopkins T] Easterhouse were, in my humble _not very good_.
I seem to remember that they were supporters of the
Revolutionary Communist Party, who were, indeed, revolutionary
communists of a sort. The sort whose membership is primarily students
and who charge very large fees for the privelige of being a mamber of
their organisation. Malcolm Eden, singer in the late, lamented McCarthy
was also once a member of that particular 'party', choosing to leave to
pursue his pop activities because he reckoned that McCarthy would be
more effective way to wreak havoc on the establishment, or somesuch. Did
he make the right decision, kids? You decide.
The Redskins, on the other hand, were members of the Socialist
Workers Party, sworn enemies of the RCP. Does it make any difference,
kids? You decide.
I remember, back in the mid-eighties, Steven Wells (SWP)
devoting a huge chunk of an NME singles review column to the Redskins,
going on about how fantastic it was that folks were putting politics
into music, then giving Easterhouse a very dismissive couple of words.
Paul Weller was, by the time of the Miners' Strike, full on for
the Labour Party and loved by all. Shame that that Paul died and was
relaced by an evil machine bent on taking over the world by boring us
all to death.

This puzzles me - when I was young, I met an old bloke who was born on the same day as me, and who claimed that that was Elvis's birthday, mine's the seventh, although I'm no authority really, I think Elvis is a cheeseburger-filled twat.

My claim to fame is that I was at an Echobelly gig in Coventry Uni in
1994 and apparently Morrissey was in the audience. And I failed to spot
him even though it was a very small club.

I think everyone's got a point. I'm sure Tag's intentions
were honourable and it's been nice to read peoples' opinions
on a slice of pop history I missed. I like Disney Girls too.
To be honest, I don't think B&S come close (yet), but in an
attempt to calm everyone down, here's a bit of what Rock De
Lux, Spanish pop mag, have to say about the Cock Fun Mob's
concert in Barcelona:
"A lot was expected of BELLE AND SEBASTIAN, partly because
IYFS has just turned itself into an unexpected and
spontaneous classic, because in Great Britain the "sold out"
sign is hung outside the door only hours after tickets go on
sale, because they don't make many trips abroad, and because
they're big and small at the same time. Big because of songs
such as "Like Dylan in the Movies" and "Get Me Away From
Here, I'm Dying" (I coud say any of the songs from the
album, but these are the only ones they played from it) and
because more than a group, they are a pop orchestra. Small
because of the reigning lack of connection on stage, for the
amateurish air they wrap everything in....because if they
weren't still small, they would be the best pop group of
this decade."
There, that's all for now. I think it's one of the nicest
reviews I've seen. I particularly like "pop orchestra".
There's also a very nice photo, in which Isobel can be seen
fiddling with her bow and looking at Stuart, who's playing
his guitar and singing. TThe caption is "shyness in the
rye".
There's also a big long article (2 pages), but it's beyond
me at the moment.
I hope that has induced a bit of warmth in everyone's heart
cockles, instaed of arguing about the merits of calling
oneself Neily Weely. For the record, I think it's a good
idea.
