Oh Lordy -- I'm old enough to be the mother of most of you. I've even got
the Duke beaten... I'm 43. Mostly I don't feel it, thanks to music. Today,
however, I do, having been out too late seeing Stereolab two nights ago and
getting lost in Harlem on the way home. Just don't bounce back like I used
to.
what's everyone's claim to fame?
Not fame, but here goes: When I was in 8th grade (about 14 years old), Jim
Morrison of the Doors asked me to come along to NY with him. My best friend
and I had sneaked around back after the show and came face to face with the
band, which we wanted to do -- but didn't really probably. So we made some
inane chatter and I asked where they were going next, eliciting the
invitation. (Be still my adolescent heart!) Being a very good Catholic
school girl, I was on my way to saying, "No thank you, sigh" when along came
my mother who ruined it all by saying it for me. He had gotten kind of
bloated by then anyhow and had switched to brown leather pants which weren't
as sexy as the black ones by half.
And here ya go Matt: Several years later, while passing the stage door on
our way in to see Ten Years After, a friend and I were in a slight
disagreement. Some guy lounging in the doorway began to mimic us and got us
pissed off. Thinking he was a roadie, we launched into him, calling him
various and assorted names which I will not repeat here as they are
politically incorrect and I am now older, wiser and more sensitive (and most
of you are British). I believe we won the verbal battle. When the stage
lights came up, we discovered that the object of our vilification was none
other than Rod Stewart -- who we didn't know from a hole in the ground then.
But to this day I feel very little regret.
And then there are the tales we don't tell because our sons are on this list
as well...

well, i *know* that there must be more of us lurking about who were at
the show. myself, i felt like it was practically a religious experience
(maybe the temple-as-venue thing helped a bit, but only a wee bit).
and the setlist, you ask? well, i've got a photo of myself holding
it...i can post the song rundown if no one's done so yet.
cheers,
felicia :)

I'm a little nervous, as I've been on the list for a week and not yet
figured myself witty enough to write something. (And this entry may prove
it)
But I'm wondering; as B&S will not be releasing anything new soon, nor will
they be here in San Francisco or ANY PART of the states any time soon, my
B&S "fix" is limited to IYFS. Are there any groups or artists of a similar
vein who could serve as as sort of substitute? I realize there's no one like
them (otherwise I wouldn't be subscribing to this list), but a little Nick
Drake, a little Left Banke, even a little Love can stretch out those B&S
vibes for me.
Does anyone have an additional suggestions (that are available in The US)?
I'd be grateful.
By the way, I'm getting a big kick out of all these "claims to fame" people
are making about people I've never heard of. And also BTW, I'm 27, female,
do NOT own a copy of Tigermilk, and have no clue who Jarvis Cocker is. Am I
missing out?

"We're all happy bunnies humming happy bunny tunes. Aren't we?"
I don't know about the happy tunes part...but we're certainly as prolific
as bunnies when it comes to posting.
Over 40 posts were in my e-maibox this morning when I woke up.
and they wonder why I never get any work done...
here's another B&S query for ya: was anyone else on this list at their NYC
gig on Sunday Sep. 7? (not the CMJ show on the 6th) I was there...just
wondering what other people's experiences with it were...and did anyone
make note of the setlist?

I vaguely remember someone from my part of the world claiming to be one of
the chosen 1000. If this is true (and I do not doubt it) , can they get in
touch for a trade :- for 45 minutes aural pleasure I am willing to part
with a blank tape and a couple of pints of dark frothing brew. PLEASE. (and
thankyou)
I now refute my earlier misguided claims of being boring. Whilst leafing
through yellow pages in search of "BOBSLEIGHS" , I came across "BORING"
only to be told "See Civil Engineers". Nuff said.

Hey,
Someone asked why the young people on this site keep apologising....
Weeeel, heres a theory with a Belle and Sebastian link....
I think my whole generation (i'm nineteen) has grown up prematurely
aged. We've been borne into a world where everyone tell us that all
the really great noble ideas have already gone and
art/literature/music whatever can onlymix and match different bits of
previous ides. As a consequence of this we've grown up listening to
very few bands who faith could be put into. I dont mean they were
bad, just that they didn't encourage taking a risk for, by really
liking them and really wanting them to succeed. You didn't invest
much of yourself into the music...
If anyones still here theres more...
Bands like Suedue and the Manic Street Preachers having somethinbg of
this quality, but (i'm being caregul here) there has always seemed a
suggestion of pretence about both of them. Whether this is true or
just a consequce of an overly cynical music press (who are too scared
to say look this band really are fanatastic and should be loved
unconditionally) I can tell. But it effects you anyway, even if you
dont fully acknowledge it....
then along come belle and sebastian and there just perfect. I think I
used to have this subconcious idea before how my favourite band
would sound and they just fitted the mould. like going home, when you
didn't even know you were homesick. And there completly inclusive,
welcoming and intimate in the songas and in themselves, and we can
see them growing up right in front of us (the Manics and Suede were
both fully formed when I first encountered them) and they attract all
the peope who have grown up with these bands who were never quite
good enough. and they come to this list and were so young, but so
sorry
phew, er kind of went of on one there...
sorry
love,
neil H
PS getting old scares us more, a carrer as a teacher awaits no doubt

I'm sure you're all up for a bit of gossip?
Well, a friend of mine (I'm not saying who) told me that said Mr Neily Weely got punched in the face and had his glasses broken at the Sarah Records farewell bash by a member of Orlando (I wonder if Dickon has anything to add, or is this not worthy of comment?). It's not all butterflies and fluffy bunnies out there in the Land of Twee, you know...

>Anyone else keen on the Razorcuts ?
Yes. Well, I used to be a big fan. If you're interested, I have a video of them playing live at The George and Dragon pub, Bedford, in 1986. It's worth watching also for the moment when you can see The Legend! (older subscribers may remember him) "dancing" in the audience. You also get a glimpse a youthful me (yes, I was there too - I was the promoter, in fact!), so I guess that makes me another of the lists elder statesmen (but I'm younger than that now).
