You're right about Red House Painters -- After listening to nothing but ...Sinister for weeks after I got it, I went looking for something else to play. Nothing that I owned seemed as if I could listen to it without breaking some sort of spell (or something, I don't know). I went to Secret Sounds in search of "music to listen to after B&S" and after quite a while of looking for something "lovely" decided on Red House Painters. While they are different, it's the same feeling and a good segue back into the "real" world. I've also just spent several days listening to a tape of Tigermilk (with the BBC sessions on the back -- must be the same source). I love "I Could Be Dreaming" best on that tape -- I think because most of the other songs were familiar, and ...Dreaming is a bit different, maybe darker. Red House Painters as a sort of quasi-Belle and Sebastian-esque band. I was first introduced to their music by a friend who liked B&S, and knew that I liked B&S, and the music is really quite good. Very slow, very mellow, strummy sad songs, for the most part. There are a bunch of albums out there (the latest release being the most upbeat, I've heard) and the two that I was told to start with were _Down Colorful Hill_ and the Rollercoaster album, which has no title on it, just a picture of an old rollercoaster. So there you have it, my 2 cents as far as recommended bands. And now moving on to B&S themselves...I am in love with _Tigermilk_. Absolutely smitten. Finally I was able to recognize many of the songs they played at the NYC show earlier this month, like the second and third songs on _TM_. I spent my Friday evening with the tape, listening to it over and over and over again. And I love the BBC stuff on the b-side, too. Oh, how I do long for more B&S. I have only been temporarily placated by this latest installment. So. There was my rambling for the moment. Sinister: Mousefolk info for jj heldman!

Howdo jj , and anyone else who's interested in the Mousefolk.. they were a band from the Bristol area, England that is, actually from a small coastal town called Clevedon..which is just next to Portishead, anyway they released a few 7" ep things in the early 90s, I've got one of them somewhere which I think is called 'Crazy Mixed Up Kid' though that could very well be by someone else..I can't remember..but they did GREAT HUUUUUGEEE t shirts which were something like XXXXXXXL in size, everyone used to ask me what it was and then go 'oh' and walk away when I told them. I think they were deeply average, I think I saw them at the famous Fleece and Firkin pub in Bristol, where I saw an infant Spiritualized too, erm I'm veering off the point here aren't I.. Page 20 of the October edition of Q magazine features a rather fetching photo of Stuart "Sexpot" Murdoch and his guitar. Next to the photo there are some words: Last gig? Aerosmith at Wembley Arena earlier this year. I went with my mum and dad. Who would you like to be if you weren't yourself? An eternal 5-year-old with big tits. erm.... On the other side of the photo are some more words: What's this? A rare sighting of Belle and Sebastian lead singer Stuart Murdoch in typically fey mood performing at The Union Chapel, North London, last month. the hotly tipped Glasgow songsmiths spent most of the gig navigating the line between "fragile beauty" and "an absolute shambles" to a packed house that included Pulp's Jarvis Cocker.... The photo is by Jamie Reid. Isn't that the bloke who did the Sex Pistols covers and is married to that woman out of Letter to Brezhnev? No, can't be... The magazine also has an article about the glory days of Radio One. It might help some of our overseas friends understand the DJ debate we had a few weeks ago. hey. this is the last time i'll post to the list with non b&s stuff, but i had to make a couple of comments. i noticed a lot of you mentioned neutral milk hotel and east river pipe as other bands you were listening to. and i mentioned lambchop. and the other day someone brought up the magnetic fields. it's funny, because all of these bands are on merge. and merge didn't used to be all that good of a label. i like the bands mentioned above but i never sat down and put it together how good of a label merge has become in the last couple of years. and i got "thriller" today, for those who know what i'm talking about. on first listen, i'm not that impressed. and only eight songs?!? that one "your fucking sunny day" is a total departure though. and one last thing..while this post has been mostly about merge, i would like to recommend one more band that i can almost guarantee any b & s would love, not that they sound like them, but because they're one of the best pop groups around......ladybug transistor. they have one album out on merge so far "beverley atonale" and they have another album before that one called "marlborough farms" which isn't anywhere near as good (coincidentally, if any of you like ladybug transistor, the first album is quite hard to come by, so if you want a copy let me know). but back to "beverley atonale"....i urge everyone on this list to go buy it if you can find it. if you don't like it, you can verbally abuse me on this very list. i promise you'll like it. that's a pretty big statement because i don't know any of you. song number three has that jesus and mary chain drum intro, you know...the "dum dumdum ch, dum dumdum ch" and then it breaks into a song so beautiful, you'd think you'd gotten hold of some long forgotten creation primal scream single (back when they were good). anyway, that's my last recommendation for a while. this list may now be returned to b&s. -brad oh yeah. a question. just how popular are magnetic fields across the ocean? are they well known? i couldn't picture them playing an outdoor festival. for those of you who don't know who they are, i'm sorry. you're missing possibly the best songwriter to ever come out of america. i saw them in concert a couple of months back and about three hours into the show (yeah, three hours, longest show i've ever seen) stephin said, "alright this is my new song" then they played the best cover version of bela lugosi's dead you could ever hope to hear. then followed that by refugee by tom petty. go figure. and if you've never seen them live, there's no drum machine or keyboards anywhere on stage. there's stephin on guitar, another guy on guitar, a guy on cello, and claudia on drums, and that's it. but the songs don't lose anything. they're even better with that minimal setting. this is longest p.s. i've ever written. and future bible heroes, another stephin merrit project, has a full length album out now..."memories of love". it's got claudia singing most of the songs, but stephin sings some of them. i recommend it also. goodbye for real. -brad ----------------------------------------------------------------------- . RE: Sinister: Seeing Other Groups

Very difficult not to get carried away here (though I probably will). The only other group in the last couple of years or so who've got me as excited as B&S, have been Neutral Milk Hotel, who I'd wager very few on this list have even heard of. Which is a shame. I'd rate their '96 lp, "On Avery Island", together with "..Feeling Sinister" as the two best lp's of the 90's. Probably. Their music's been described as "drone folk", which might not sound too promising, but ain't too far wide of the mark, especially if you reckon B&S can be labelled "folk". Like B&S, NMH (as I shall henceforth call them) are centered around a songwriter of some genius, Jeff Mangum, and feature a wide range of musical instruments: banjo, accordian, musical saw (oh yes! I can't understand anyone needing a Theremin when you can have a musical saw!), as well as the usual guitar, bass, drums, keyboards. Mangum also has an incredible voice - much harsher than Stuart's - he can hold a note seemingly for ages. When I saw them at a festival in Providence, Rhode Island in April, they simply exploded into action. Nothing contrived or pompous, but you just thought....."Yeah, this is what a live band should be like......and, my god, that guy's playing the saw, banjo and synth......at the same time!". This was exactly how Belle & Sebastian made me feel when I saw them live for the first time, only a couple of months earlier. NMH are American, by the way. Watch out for them. I think I probably rambled on for quite enough. Apart from...... Can also recommend the new Yo La Tengo lp, the new Stereolab album (and their most recent collaboration with Nurse With Wound, which is possibly the best thing they've ever done, imho), almost anything on New York's Asphodel label (DJ Spooky, We, Tipsy - but that's probably a bit left-field for this list), Adventures in Stereo (yet more Glaswegian 60's-influenced pop), Broadcast, The Freed Unit......oh I'll shut up now. And finally - and back on topic - has anyone else noticed that "A Century Of Fakers" uses the same musical track as "A Century Of Elvis"? Sinister: Too many choices!

I hope you all can help me out here. I have written before on how difficult it is to find B&S where I live, and someone sent me to a place on the web called "Secret Sounds" where I could order the new ep's. I'm very wary of internet businesses, so I'm going to order ONE of the ep's through them, to see how they do business. So here's the question: I have Sinister, but which ep should I try first? Actually, I have another question: I'm going to be in Orlando Fla. soon, and I want to ask if there are any listers who live there who can recommend a good record store where I might be able to find the ep's. Shops here in Nashville, despite it's claim of being "the Music City capitol of the USA" try hard but always leave me disappointed. Hello - i've been lurking for a while. I find it hard to write as i'm working in Boston at the moment so getting to my PC is kind of difficult! Anyway, i've finally been inspired to write by the mention of the truly wonderful Lilac Time. When I taped Tigermilk for someone I put 'Astronauts' on the other side - so this has got me thinking : what have other people taped on that inviting 45 blank minutes which could live up to the greatness of 'Tigermilk' & not force the listener to knacker their walkman batteries with constant rewinds? Oh & the person who said The Lilac Time's lyric's are silly, whaddya mean ? Stephen A.J Duffy always manages to slip in a wondeful couplet in EVERY song!! I have some more questions about The Lilac Time, but I'll not bore the list now. If you're a fan mail me privately - you may be able to help. Hi all, Now as it appears several people on the list have got copies of the Seconds Of Light EP I'd like to throw the following morsel into the soup & give it a stir. There's no mention of the band or title on the front of the sleeve, is this a good idea? It's easy enough to confuse the customers in our shop at the best of times :) Will it get overlooked by potential buyers because of this or will a tasteless sticker be added before it's released? Damn you Mr. Duke I was going to mention the East River Pipe/Lambchop connection & you beat me to it :) If people out there haven't heard East River Pipe you really should.
