( Sorry for the lack of B&S content)
Hello there, I've never sent a message to one of these list thingis before but I tought I would to this one.
Why ? Well because finally I've found some people who not only like B&S but Felt! (not to mention the Band Of Holy Joy).
If anyone has never heard Felt, then I strongly advise you to get some. They are probably the greatest band EVER. Loads of stuff was re-release by either Cherry Red or Creation on dull grey CD's, and I would advise anyone to get one of these as a start. I might even be pesuased to send a Felt "best of" compilation tape to anyone who wants one, 'cos well, I love the band and I want them to get some recognition at last.
Anyway, thats my first message done with.
Iain Meakin, Forest fan.

Asking me to choose between Tigermilk and If You're Feeling Sinister is like
asking a mother to choose a favorite child. I mean, yes, Tigermilk was the
first B&S I heard, and nothing will quite compare to my heart skipping a beat
the first time I heard "You're Just a Baby," but "Judy and the Dream of
Horses" took the slow burn approach and haunted me for weeks.
Maybe we're all a tad partial to the first B&S we heard. Any thoughts?
Also, in reference to Neutral Milk Hotel recommendations, what can I say
besides this....I saw them in Boston the night after the festival in
Providence Nigel mentioned, and it was easily the rockinest live show I have
ever attended. After the first song, the packed-in-crowd at the Middle East
sat in stunned silence until a woman in the back of the crowd said "Oh my
God, this is *so cool.*" And we all just nodded and then the second song
kicked in. Their CD, "On Avery Island," was the driving CD of choice this
past Spring, and "Song Against Sex" and "Naomi" have quickly become mix tape
staples. Check them out.

Well Hello All
Sadly, I must leave this list mere weeks after joining it. Such is the
lot of the freelancer.
A word of thanks before I go. It's a nice place you have here. The
conversation is the right mix of rambling and to the point. That
international flavour is wonderful too, ambrosia to a sad expat. And
somehow, alone in the world of fandom, B&S lovers seem able to express
themselves in a manner that does not come across as fawning and boring.
Enough compliments. If anyone gets this before 6pm West Coast US time,
would they mind dropping me a line and letting me know if Mike Alway's
new project is a patch on el?
Oh and a question before I depart into the hills. I get the sneaking
suspicion that a number of listers, indeed, perhaps even the band, may
share a common past. So, then, how many of you were, between the years
of 1985 and 1989, what was referred to as "cuties"? Oh come on, admit
it. There's no shame in it now. My anorak was green and had fuzzy orange
lining. Since I won't be around to hear the answer, would anyone care to
explain those topsy - turvy years that seem so much a part of B & S, at
least to me, to those that weren't around?
Oh, actually, one more thing. I've saved this question until last.
Erm...would anyone mind taping Tigermilk for us? My real address,
because I trust this list and I'm going to be gone from email pretty
soon: #307,
2041 N.Vermont Ave, L.A. CA 90027
Please don't anyone be a stalker or anything.
I hope to meet some of you in the real world some time.
My respects
Richard Hutt

Just got the Archer Prewitt solo CD, "In the Sun". Happy, jazzy, funky
and just plain great.

People should give a listen to Built To Spill (the most recent LP is amazing),
Eric Matthews, and Eliot Smith. All from the Pacific Northwest, they have left
the whole grunge nonsense behind and made fascinating, beautiful music. Matthews
(both albums) has a very Pet Sounds feel to it, with occasional orchestra and
horns, Smith has a similar voice but without the lush feel of Matthews. Built to
Spill is just plain great.

I hit the jackpot in a tape swap: "Tigermilk" on one side, the also famously
hard-to-find "Heavenly vs. Satan" on the other. That tape is just about wore
plum out.

I too have just received a copy of Tigermilk and was really suprised at how
good it is. First of all, there is much more variety in the sounds than on
IYFS and I think Stuart's singing is more accomplished somehow. I had
heard that B&S didn't want to rerelease it because they weren't proud of it
but now I refuse to believe that. This got me thinking... you see my
friends and I have a theory that really holds up... No band or musical
artist has a long career unless their second record is better than their
first record. This would make sense considering that the first record is
usually comprised of songs written over a longer period of time, so the
second record is a much greater test of the longevity of a songwriter.
There is also usually a bigger budget for a second record. Anyway, I
haven't heard Tigermilk enough times to call it better than IYFS yet and I
would like to know what everyone thinks about this comparison.

I think I accidentally sent this only to brad yesterday, sorry if
anyone is seeing this twice:
As per brad's request that we make recommendations for
other bands to check out, first let me give a second nod of
approval to LambChop.....its real beautiful stuff.
Rather than dwell on older records that I favour, I thought that
I'd tip my cap to some newer releases:
I myself have been spending a lot of time listening to "In
Hospitalable", the new album by the BEATNIK FIMSTARS on
merge records. Lots of fuzz and feedback and all that, but
under it all are some very pretty songs. Also pleasing to my
pop palate is "Square" by the ORANGE PEELS on Minty
Fresh...real charming and bright pop...very fresh-faced in its
sound. Then, speaking of bright, there is a new
BaDaBing/Darla release from the Boston band BRIGHT. It's
called Albatross Guesthouse and is a little more errr,
rock-oriented (but not a rock record), than their self-titled
release, but its still a gorgeous concoction of melody and
space. Oh and back to pop, definitely check out OF
MONTREAL's...I'm at al oss for the album title as well as the
label....if Neutral Milk Hotel and Olivia Tremor Control and that
whole Elephant 6 gang are pleasing to you, than you'll be
charmed by Of Montreal as well. And my final off the top of
my head recommendation is "Spoke" by CALEXICO on
Quarterstick....so exquisite, like the sounds you expect to
hear from a gypsey caravan that's travelling along the Sierra
Madre trying to find the next frontier of love.

Oh god, this reminds me of a horrific experience i had yesterday after work;
got home, put on MTV while i fussed about the kitchen looking for something
nourishing, and this show, 12 Angry Viewers was on; it's like a make it or
break it/ sink or swim type thing where the viewers chat and vote on new
videos. Anyway, the new, BRILLIANT, Cornershop video was one of the videos
and the 12 people, all very MTV looking in that crap Real World way, . .
.they just said the most inane things. One girl liked it, but couldn't give
it a great review cause,"who listens to records anymore, it's all cd's,
right?" (the video depicts a girl listening to her favorite 45's on her
bedroom floor). The worst though was the guy in leather and long hair who
said, and i quote, "what a Gin Blossoms rip-off." I wanted to vomit.
new records that have me smiling: The Verve lp, Helen Love ep, NoneSuch Film
Series' four new releases, The End on 10th Planet Records, Delgados Peel
Sessions tape, new Apples, Jack Drag, and the new Pastels. record.
bye,
nk
