i've put off doing my top 10 for days coz i just couldn't decide which i preferred but i think we should all put them in to make the lovely averaged top 10 as averagey as possible. my fave songs: 1 seeing other people 2 lazy line painter jane 3 photo jenny 4 le pastie... 4 you're just a baby 5 mary jo 6 judy and the dream of horses 7 modern rock song 8 electronic renaissance 9 expectations 10 stars of track and field there we go. i can't believe i've just made such a list; i haven't really thought about it so the numberings probably aren't accurate, if i did think about it i think madness would be the only conclusion ( ha ha, that's a joke, as in a "you don't have to me mad here, but it helps" sort of ilk). eagerly awaiting the big fandango results, t'other kate ----------------------------------------------------------------------- . NO NO NO NO! There are much more than 1000 fans of Belle and Sebastian now, those of us who would want Tigermilk on CD might not get one of your 'special edition' releases...and so some of us would STILL have to pay upwards of 100 quid for the thing in a collectors shop. Sinister: Tigermilk Reissues

My thoughts on reissuing Tigermilk: I don't have an LP copy of Tigermilk. I first started listening to B&S last September, and thought that the LP would eventually get imported to the US, and thus didn't bother buying it when I still might have had a chance. Although it would be nice to have the songs, I don't feel too much worse off since I have seen the artwork and story on the internet, and have a reasonably good copy of the songs (thanks Andy). If anybody read the first issue of the fanzine I do, I wrote a section on bands who don't want to reissue their prior works. (The Field Mice are probably the classic example.) There are three reasons an artist or band might not want to choose re-release: 1) They (along with a label) feel that they could make the money back. 2) They are not 100% happy with the songs. 3) They enjoy the fact the record is rare and unattainable. Probably #1 doesn't hold (although I don't think Tigermilk would sell nearly as well as the new LP). #3 is ridiculous I'm sure. #2 is probably the more obvious answer. You might feel perplexed that they weren't 100% with the album, but keep in mind that most of the songs were written when the band was beginning to get a feel for each other. They perhaps reflect a bit of immaturity (not so much in the songwriting but more in their execution). Besides, of course they'd rather concentrate on new material. Now I feel that they should feel compelled to keep available a product in demand, and they probably will eventually. That being said, if for whatever reason they decide not to keep it in print, they have nothing to complain about when the Tigermilk bootlegs start rushing in. As far as Jeepster is concerned with Tigermilk bootlegs, I can understand their desire to protect the band, but don't really feel it's any of their business considering that they don't have any rights to it (according to my impression please correct me if I'm wrong Katrina). Of course they could pay for legal fees on behalf of B&S blah blah blah although I couldn't see why it would be in anyone's interest (other than guarding an artificial "myth" factor which is an immoral interest as far as I'm concerned). ----------------------------------------------------------------------- . Sinister: wahey! edinburgh!

it's always really nice to think of b & s being in edinburgh coz they're such a glasgow band.... so near.. yet so far... anyway, a mate of mine was down at a dingy little pub last night called legends and so were stuart m, sarah and chris. he thought isobel too but didn't know; our haircut comparisons matched but not our weight estimations ( ugh, try not to be so anal please, kakey)... um, there was a benefit gig for rape crisis with v-twin, eugenie andddd somebody else whose name i can't remember. i didn't actually know it was on (that'll learn ya to be a hermit) . anyway, i'm sure lots of people have got their own gummy little stories about when they last spied members of b & s so maybe this isn't that interesting.... but my chum matt said that stuart's hair was looking a bit disconcerted, like he'd taken the choppers to it himself. probably had. pop trivia. i love it. so it was nice to think of them all boozing away in that smoky biker inn where i used to crawl to when i lived opposite in a nasty student flat and sneeky petes (it's neighbour) was just tooooo busy. by the pool table at legends; always a good place to get your arse felt. and a great heavy metal juke box too. had a cigarette machine with the cheapest fags; mind you , that was before...... do you know, in the summer of- sorry, i almost lost myself for a moment there... more rubbish later t'other kate ----------------------------------------------------------------------- . While getting one's hands on something that is "rare" can heighten one's experience (or color it in a different way if the rarity is different from the main), the appreciation should be based on experiencing the rarity, not from being one of the select few to have it. It brings to mind those who would order complete leather-bound libraries in order to look cultured but, when opened, none of the books' pages had been cut -- none were ever read. I just have a problem with feeling "special" based on nothing more than other people's "non-specialness." [Keith Watson] Right enough my flatmate pointed that out to me in the pub about a year ago - but it's really only the little bit at the end of the chorus though. Keith. >> Ah but Keith have you ever tried singing from the beginning of the chorus after listening to La-La-La-Lies on The Who's My Generation album. Unfortunately this is a song imprinted on my mind long before B&S came into my life and I am now unable to even hum the chorus of The State I Am In without it going wrong after the first line, leaving me unable to share this fine refrain with my companions. And I say that I am beginning to be really irritated with the whole Tigermilk situation. Why would anyone *want* to have the thing staying unavailable? I guess superbob's point is that he's irritated that he doesn't have a copy but would be quite happy to get one and then pull the ladder up beneath him. (I might have misunderstood here). The fine efforts of Andy D (who did me my swiftly degrading tape) and such fellows is great but not enough. These songs are just so good that they deserve to go out to the people, and I know lots of B&S fans who would never dream of getting onto a list like this. How the hell are they going to hear it? Or , despite all the happiness about the chart placing, would we all be happier *really* if B&S stayed our own little secret? Is the status of Tigermilk what keeps them ours, somehow? The band say that there are too amny other things to do at the moment, but what's to stop them just letting the thing out and letting it sell itself. It undoubtedly would (IYFS seemed to tick over very happily without a great deal of ongoing promotion, by word of mouth(?)), and the money generated could be used for other things. I just don't understand it. The main point being that this is pop music and while I understand that each of us has our own obscure and unobtainable corners of pop history, it seems perverse and snobbish to artificially create this one, and it would be selfish of us to support it. 'Collectable' has nothing to do with 'pop'. The last copy of Tigermilk I saw on sale went for eighty pounds. That means that to hear the songs you either have to know someone with the LP (i.e. be in the in-crowd) or have the sort of money floating about where you can afford to splash ?80 on an LP. Sinister: Pastie

I am so friggin' annoyed with this Pastie thing. Pastie is not a word in the French language. It just simply does not exist. Even a French lad posted to the list guaranteeing this. People have suggested that it means apathy. It does not! It simply does not. Apathy in French is your standard cognate, apathie. So the apathy in French is l'apathie. Now, for somebody with a lisp and who does not know their differences between their genders, this could sound like, l'apathie (even though the stresses are a bit off). BTW, bourgeoisie absolutely means middle class albeit upper middle class. It was the class in the French revolution who were not part of the nobility per se, but who made money through business practices.
