'This Life' is/was a risque (sometimes) BBC 2 drama about a group of young lawyers and their partners living together in a flat in London. Lots of swearing/sex (hetero and gay)/drinking/drugs etc etc. It gained a large cult following and I actually really loved it too. There were two series - the second being far better, and there has been talk of a third, although most of the cast have been offered wonderful parts in other things as a result, so there may not be another. ok, a transcription of the recent interview on the Net, that radio 1 showbiz news type thing that goes out 3 times a day. it's a lot longer than the bit that they quoted on the ceefax page. radio 1: now, scottish 8 piece b&s say they're happy to remain elusive to the media. the band were formed at the beginning of last year and have been the subject of much industry interest. now they're starting to sell some records too. like this ep called '3, 6, 9 seconds of light' which is a top 40 hit this week. the band hardly ever do interviews but two of them, chris and sarah, did talk to us. chris says they don't believe in playing the media game. chris: it doesn't make your record any better if you go in the nme telling everyone you're the best band in the world. you know what i mean? i mean, you make a record and you stand or fall by the record and if people like it they'll buy it and if they don't they won't. you can't make people buy something they don't like just by going in the nme every week telling everyone you're the greatest band in the world (when). it's pointless. it's really easy to say that, it's a lot harder to give respect where it's due to other people and just keep quiet. radio 1: the band say they'd rather let the songs speak for themselves and even hate explaining what their music's like chris: you don't have to give 'em an idea cos the only idea they'll get is when one of their pals go 'oh, i heard this record and it's good, listen to it' or something like that. because that's the only way i've ever got into any bands in the past, all my favourite bands, it's certainly not by reading about them in the press. y'know, you hear it on the radio and you go 'that's great' sarah: everything seems to change from one day to the next anyway. each song comes out sounding completely different. it's not really worth trying to shove it into a category cos we'd go and make it pointless the next time we pick up our instruments. chris: it all depends on what part of the menstrual cycle we're all in... radio 1: and you don't want to catch them on a bad week, believe me. anyway, if you like them, b&s will be releasing a new album but not until early next year. [end] i'd not heard chris' voice before and it's kinda soft and sweet (which he probably won't thank me for - it's on par with having a teddy bear named after you in the 'ick' stakes). sarah's accent was a lot less pronounced than i remember it. still drop dead gorgeous though. andy my tigermilk tape just got mangled by my walkman. not happy. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- . All right? It's Neil here. My favourite bit was when we went to a club with Fountain with Fontain out of Versus and Janis out of Slater Kinney. And me and Stevie taught New York to dance cos they were all pretty NY cool at the beginning of the evening, but we melted the ice-maidens' and by the end of the night we had them dancing just like out of "Goodfoot". Apart from that, the best bit was asking the waitress out in the diner we always go to for breakfast, and taking a total beamer and starting shaking, and having her staring me in the eyes, going, "Why are you shaking? Why have you gone all red?" And fluffing it. Here's Stuart Murdoch... 21 The missing link between Belle and Sebastian and Lemurs. I haven't seen the site yet, but if it's got all the little stories from the sleeves on, I'll be jumping for joy in a lemur-like fashion. It's ironic isn't it? All this time and no-one has so much as mentioned our ape brothers and sisters and then on the same day someone says they don't give a monkey's what Belle and Sebastian look like, and then they are honoured with their own webpage on leftover lemur space. One small step for Belle and Sebastian.... I agree with what the person said about overseas distribution. Although mail order is available, it's not the same. Going into a shop and buying a new record is a very Pop experience (probably) whereas sitting around waiting for the postman isn't. Well, it's less fun anyway. I'm not sure, but I think quite a few bands do very well financially just by being available. The reviews are always uncannily good for records that you can actually buy. Plus the reviewers don't have to resort to copying stuff out of the NME. And it's not just independant labels. I've been quite heartenend to see that people in Britain and Ireland have the same problems as me. I thought it was "worldwide release date except for Gipuzkoa" but it looks like it's more widespread. Rant over. Peter ----------------------------------------------------------------------- . Such is my level of boredom at the moment that I feel the urge to join in the Tigermilk discussion. My fantastic idea is to release bits of Tigermilk, some demos, some radio sessions and whatever else comes to mind, as a Hatful of Hollow style stop-gap release. I think Hatful of Hollow is the best Smiths album, because it's all jumbled up and got a nice picture in the middle. That's it really. Bit rubbish I'm afraid. I've also decided that nice paper or cardboard is more important than any gimmicky promotional tricks. But if you're going to do gimmicky promotional tricks, I suggest following in the footsteps of The Cramps and making a nudie-twist video.
