I get a special pleasure listening to the belle & sebastian at work, because I work at a record label which is known for especially loud and heavy acts..i'm the only one here with any pop sensibilities and an appetite for indie rock ... so I annoy the hell out of folks around here with it....not to mention that there is a woman at the company I work for who used to work for the Enclave and she absolutely hated the "Sinister" album when she had to promote it, so I really get under her skin when I play anyhting by B&S. Wow- as I was typing, the woman who sits at the next desk walked over and said "Is this a CD?" (I'm listening to Sinister on my CD-rom) and I said yes, and she asked who it was, and I told her. She said, "You know I hum this on the train, and hear it in my sleep, you listen to it so much." I began to apologize for annoying her, and she said "No, I want you to tape it for me." Sinister: The Bathers Etc.

I was browsing in Virgin the other day, and I came across three records by the Bathers. One of the records was called Kelvingrove Baby, and I seem to remember they were on the bill of the B&S show in Glasgow earlier this year. Are they any good? They're on Marina, who I think did that tribute to Postcard a while back, which is probably a good sign. I need advice because my bank account dictates that I can't be quite as cavalier in my record purchasing as I would like! On a literary tip, I remember reading in an interview in Select that Stuart was heavily influenced by the work of CS Lewis, the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe guy. Though I'm damned if I can see any evidence. Some of the songs remind me of the short stories of Lorrie Moore, however. Finally: Hal Hartley. I remember when The Unbelievable Truth came out in the mid-eighties, Hartley was saying that he was trying to do in cinema what the Smiths and other English indie bands were doing in music. So with his influence on B&S, the debt seems to have come full circle. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- . Sinister: Err.....new EP actually, quel surprise

I'm surprised no-one's raised this point yet [Ha! Says he who will soon find he's missed ten screaming rants saying exactly the same thing.....], but it is my considered opinion that 3, 6, 9 Seconds Of Light EP *is not yet out*. If I'm wrong I'll be pissed off, both for making a prat of myself and missing the opportunity of getting it today - anyway, the bloke in Virgin said that they had *sold out of copies*, but seeing as it was still only 1.30, and let's face it, few people see B+S like they see Elton John, so I presumed that he was wrong. I phoned a smaller Indie-type shop, and they said that it had been *put back a week or so*. So have I missed an important announcement on the list, or what? Katrina - what the hell? That book was written by Peter Hoeg. I haven't seen the movie, but I know it has already been made - it had a pretty limited release earlier in the year (definitely in the States and I'm almost certain I saw it advertised here in Sweden - I know that Gabriel Byrne is either in it or produced/directed it ).
