listening to some tracks from the recent Amsterdam Belle and Sebastian show ( 5 songs from what seems to be a live Dutch radio broadcast), I hear one of them state ' and here's Another Girl Another Planet...', i was excited for a moment, not having heard anyone mention they covered this Only Ones song Poly knows it! ). they then kick in with 'Sleep The Clock Around" and yes, now i hear it, they did rip off the intro, but that is ok. Hello everybody, I'm delighted to see Roald Dahl mentioned, as he is my all time favorite writer. Here's another lovely line to admire and contemplate: "And above all, watch with glittering eyes the whole world around you, because the greatest secrets are always hidden in the most unlikely places. About cartoon crushes, people think I'm crazy for falling madly in love with Bart Simpson, my hero. Only a true Simpsons die-hard would understand I suppose, but he is simply the greatest kid around. Lisa's pretty neat too, and she's got the B&S connection going for her. Sinister: Yet another review of TBWAS

As if this list has not been saturated with enought reviews of the new B&S album but I think I have found the one I like best. Of course I may be a little biased. It comes out of my personal favorite indie rock magazine, Puncture(if you have never checked it out, do so). They only put out an issue every four or five months and I just got the new one today. In the middle of the magazine there are many pink pages filled with some really good reviews. Most are dated by the time an issue comes out but they do touch on some of the more obscure indie bands that don't get press anywhere. And the reviews are actually quite readable. I especially like the last couple of lines of this review. It hits my own fascination with this band square on the head. It goes like this: "...but I never think of them in terms of influence or history. They're friends playing for themselves. And we can't stop listening". I certainly can't stop listening. I listened to IYAFS everyday for 6 months. a word of advice about dating services... I once tried to do an "indie rock dating service" called Heartburn through my zine... and only men responded, who wanted to date women. So it didn't work out. I suppose I could have had myself quite a few dates, though... actually, no one lived near me. oh well. oh yes, album reviews for the day: I head the new Vanilla Ice record, and I swear, it sounds like Rage Against the Machine... it's hysterical. Also, I heard the new Hole record and I must say I do not like it. It's just that anyone who's read much Dahl will notice a certain distrust of money, well banks at least, in his work. Just read 'Henry Sugar'... No. It was probably just a Readers' Digest style 'thought for the day', easily memorable, but ripped totally out of context. Amusingly inappropriate though- it's like when John Major stole that passage from Orwell's 'The Lion and the Unicorn', for one of his election broadcasts, or something. It sounded great- unfortunately, he must have got it out of a book of easy quotes for speechwriters. 'cause if he'd read the whole thing, he'd have noticed that Orwell's essay's subtitle was 'Socialism and the English Genius'. Hmmm. a paul wrote: <<I'd like to see Beadle in the USA he wouldn't last a single day he'd play just one joke on an American bloke and they'd blow the fucker away>> Good grief! Meat flavoured crisps! Jeremy Beadle! Doesn't Britain sound so sexy and alluring, hey kids? I've just had some Bacon and Brown Sauce crisps for dinner actually- they claimed to be Scottish, and they had a castle, some tartan, and even a wee Highlander on the packet, so they must have been. They were fantastic. Wash them down with Irn Bru, and you've got a whole gastronomical experience :-{ ) Aaa...nyway, has anyone volunteered/been volunteered for the monday poem yet? If not, I'd love to have a crack at it. I've a lovely bitter/sweet one about buses lined up for you- and anyone familiar with the ruthless culling of endangered routemasters will surely weep tears of loss and pity as they read it. And on a volunteering note, I volunteer to deal with all the 'unsubscribe sinister's sent to the list, if someone else wants to sort out the 'can I have a dub of Tigermilk' s and the 'can I burn it on to cd' s' and the 'can I turn my rectum into a sensurround arse-theatre and charge people to listen to Tigermilk in all its remastered digital beauty' s. Not that we get too many of the latter, of course, but it would be nice to be prepared. Play nicely children. And don't spit on the slide! seb PS- I'm shocked at the total lack of Animals that Swim on this list! So, in order to introduce you all to the glories of the best band since Belle and Sebastian, I'll throw in a little snippet of them into each post. And I'll keep doing it til you damn well like them! Sinister: Athens ticket plea for help

I'm going to try this again before I spend too much time and money trying to get the same information that I KNOW someone knows: Does anyone know how someone can order tickets for the Athens show by phone? I know this may seem lazy to just post to the list, but there's no info on the Jeepster site and, yes, I've already checked the archives, and like I said, I'm sure that someone out there has gotten tickets to this show already, so if you could please mail me (although I'm sure there's some other people on the list who would like to know). I find it ace, and it must be my second best album at the moment (the first one is The Boy With the arab strap, obviously...). Dont you think some of the songs could be easily compared to Belle and Sebastian ones, with all these lovely instruments (horns, pianos, violins, guitars...) ? Anyway, it's great, go and buy it immediately. I second that emotion. And while you're at it, get the 7" single Anywhere/Keep An Open Mind by St. Low, (which is really Mary Lorson from Madder Rose) coz its great: strong tunes, sweet singing and surprisingly professional and emotive keyboards from Mary herself.
