Good day all, I went to see Damon & Naomi on Friday night, and as I thought it was nice of them to visit Oxford, I made them a Tigermilk tape. They seemed pleased with the pressie, but didn't seem to know them (eh ?!!), so I gave them a potted history, and Naomi said that they were playing Edinborrow - I corrected that too :) Anyway, the point of this mail is that I was wondering what other bands have been given Tigermilk as a present. I seem to remember someone giving Ben Folds Five one, and I guess The Pastels may have a copy too. Friends, I recently got the three singles in the mail and, frankly, I haven't a clue as to why so many people are so down on Dog on Wheels. Here's an ep with four great songs. I haven't had a chance to compare DOW's "The State I am in" to the Tigermilk version but Im blown away by this "demo." In my humble opinion, the vaunted LLPJ is a bloody meandering mess compared to DOW. Is there now a consensus as to how the sinisterites will show their colors at the New York and Philly shows. The lovely Janine suggested we all wear daisies and I think that is a wonderful idea. Personally, I plan to bring as many daisies as I can tastefully attach to my person. If I can find any, that is. I am grateful to see that Jeepster's threats of legal action against Tigermilk bootleggers are interspersed with promises of a rerelease next year. Thank you. We love you. Now who will help me unleash a veritable deluge of pathetic pleading mail on Canalot if this does not come to pass? Ok, I'm bitter because I'm still waiting for the stateside release of the Tindersticks b-sides compilation. . . I've held out as long as I could, but I can't any longer: Is there someone out there who could, maybe, in their precious spare time and out of the infinite kindness of their heart make me a copy of Tigermilk? I'd be willing to offer most anything that's legal in trade. Musically, I'm afraid the best I can offer in trade is a copy of Tindersticks' Amsterdam live album, which is my most prized possession and apparently a little rare. Dear Brothers and Sisters, I was really going to make an effort to write more often to this here mailing list. It was a couple of weeks ago, and I told myself that I was going to write each day this week. Of course I never did. I....did something else instead. Days keep slipping by, and wait, only three days till our heroes will grace these American shores. Perfect time of year for all of this. The leaves are falling, the nights are getting cooler. Everything is starting to make a bit more sense. Things are coming into focus after the hot and hazy summer. And I was stacking firewood this evening, which as much as I'd hate to admit it, always puts me in a good mood. Does that make me 'simple'? So, yes, Edie Sedgwick. This all ties together somewhere. I got dragged to New York City yesterday, to go to the Whitney Museum to see some exhibit of some artist who I can't remember but was very good. Very big bold paintings. Lots of emotion. Anyway, they were also showing a film of Andy Warhol, "Outer and Inner Space". So I got to stare at four images of Edie Sedgwick for half an hour. At one point it struck me that she reminded me of our very own Isobelle. Maybe its just the hair cut. And Edie was wearing these really big earrings. They were wonderful. But I seem to remember that Edie was a bit of a mess in her later years. Didn't the Cult write a song about her? For all those coming in for the New York show on Sunday, maybe you can catch the film before the meet-up. There are showings at 11.30, 12.45, 2, 3.15, and 4.30. No shows Monday or Tuesday it seems, though. On Madison, at 75th street. Not sure if I'll be able to make the meet up. I think my little group will be drinking somewhere special. To let everybody know, this is Todd's last night out on the town, since he will be moving to The South. In the spirit of the UK after show club happenings, we were thinking of taking our little group of friends to this place called SHOUT! Never been myself, but its supposed to be a club in the 60's pop/soul vein. Its quite possible that it might be filled with pretentious neo-mods. If so, I'm sure a throng of hyped-up(possibly tipsy) Belle and Sebastian fans can out-class any pretentious neo-mod. And I'm sure we can out do them on the dance floor. We've all got SOUL. But just in case I'll bring a few extra Ben Shermans, if anybody needs help getting in the door. Some friends of mine, (including the infamous Todd) will be making a bit of a road trip to take in the Boston and Philly shows. I got my badge(or button as we Americans call it. A badge is something boy scouts get.) and my t-shirt all ready. I'll be the rather tall boy with red hair. And I'll probably be smiling. Ready, Set, Who!!!!....I mean Go! Hey kids, While I was picking a poem for you lovely listees to read, I came across the latest issue of Pulse! magazine, and found a TOYBOATS review. It's so bad that I refuse to reprint it, but I will tell you that the adverb count was somewhere in the high 20s (it was only a two paragraph article), and the reviewer especially liked the songs "Spacebaby Dream" and "A Summer Wedding". Hee hee, says me. Onto the poems. I will preface the first by telling you that diverticulitis is a weird illness with which you can't eat any nuts or seeds (no strawberry jam, even), because your colon will swallow them up in tiny pockets in its lining and turn them into little monster appendages. So people who have it freak out if you give them baked goods, knowing you've probably spiked them with seeds inadvertently. The second excerpt is from a poem I found when I was far away from home, and it made me cry. That and sourdough bread were the only things that made me want to go home. And if you've eaten sourdough bread anywhere outside of California, you've only eaten white bread with an inflated ego. AHEM. "Eating the Cookies" by Jane Kenyon, American poet, 1947-1995 The cousin from Maine, knowing about her diverticulitis, left out the nuts, so the cookies weren't entirely to my taste, but they were good enough; yes, good enough. Each time I emptied a drawer or shelf I permitted myself to eat one. I cleared the closet of silk caftans that slipped easily from clattering hangers, and from the bureau I took her nightgowns and sweaters, financial documents neatly cinctured in long gray envelopes, and the hairnets and peppermints she'd tucked among Lucite frames abounding with great-grandchildren, solemn in their Christmas finery. Finally the drawers were empty, the bags full, and the largest cookie, which I had saved for last, lay solitary in the tin with a nimbus of crumbs around it. There would be no more parcels from Portland. Sinister: 5 days till B&S

Hi, I am new on the list but a big B&S fan. I am real excited because I am from Philadelphia and B&S are playing here on Friday. I bought the tickets months ago and the wait is almost over. I was given _If You are Feeling Sinister_ from a friend who was studying abroad in Scotland for a semester. I was blown away. I immediately bought all the singles and was hooked. I like _The Boy With the Arab Strap_ and am elated that that one of the seven cities they are coming to is Philadelphia. After the show I will be sure to post a description of the show and if my memory holds up a set-list. The only trick will be trying to identify the new songs and the songs from _Tigermilk_ (because no places around here even heard about B&S until _Boy with The Arab Strap_ let alone find a tape of a rare vinyl from Scotland, i hope that will change when they visit) Well I hope the show is good even though I have read some reviews of the live performances that were less than enthusiastic. Most of them were by people who said that Stuard's voice wasn't strong enough and that there was not enough electric guitar. These are probably the same people who attended the Ozzfest and were there for the midnite showings of Led Zeppelins _The Song Remains The Same_ and cry when they see John Bonham on the motorcycle, because,man, if he didn't love the rock life so much, maybe Led Zeppelin would still be around today and there would be peace in the world. ok, if anyone other than brian, matt, elisa, or tag get the topic line, i'll give you a lollipop. well, it's another sunday in this coastal town, did you all ever think of new york as a coastal town? i mean, we're really right out on the atlantic so we are. though i guess the town part doesn't work. this is the first time i've lived in a town that's situated on the ocean. or right next too really. i've lived within an hour or so, but it's nice to be there. though in all honesty, it terribly easy to forget you're on an island when you live in new york. no matter how high you get, you keep seeing buildings. except for the really tall ones, like the empire state building and the world trade center. but i haven't been to the top of either. have any of you read the alienist? it was a very good book by caleb carr, a murder mystery that takes place in new york city around the turn of the century. and the characters run back and forth about town jumping from the lower east side to christopher street and back to east 14th street in an hour. i barely venture to soho in a day, i can spend a week or more without leaving the village. but then they have carriages, and i just have my two feet. subways are fine but i tend to avoid them unless necessary due to the expense. i mean, i can walk 20 blocks and it's hard to justify not doing so sometimes. does anyone have any ideas for my upcoming films? i'm thinking of doing the next one in my friend sam's apartment, with chiruscuro lighting, like casablanca or a sam spade detective film. but it's kind of hard for me to gel some of these ideas, i get so caught up in the details. though it's better to work from the technical side back to the story, otherwise i come up with this complex story that could not be created with my limitations. about belle and sebastian... i've spent so much of the list's bandwith for my own needs that i feel like i should offer something of general interest for everyone who's been patient enough to read this far without knowing me. within a week the kids in boston and toronto should begin gushing out their praises, and i'll be doing so in two weeks. i'm a little nervous, i hope i'm not expecting too much. but then, i've seen lots of bands perform before, some of whom i'd idolized even more (cause i can't adore b&s now as much as i adored other bands when i was 15. it just isn't the same thing) and have yet to be disappointed when it really counted. and anyone coming to the new york meet ups from far away, if you'd like to be on our picnic mailing list, which is basically just the list of addresses of people that we send more specific info to about new york things that wouldn't be of general interest to the whole list, you should probably write to jonnykat(a)aol.com or matt at mphintz(a)aol.com. or just to me, even though it takes me a little time to reply sometimes, but i do. you just may have to wait for it. ;) xox megan mkl206(a)is8.nyu.edu visit the magnetic fields web page at: http://www.dissemination.com/megan/magneticfields/ +----------------------------------------------------------------------+ +---+ Brought to you by the Sinister mailing list +---+ To send to the list please mail "sinister(a)majordomo.net". Does anybody know who is on the bill for the Boston show this Wednesday? Also what time it is? I could just call and find out, sure, but I'm sitting on the internet right now and thought I'd ask (anything to put off studying for the GRE's). Also, I read something (in Chirckfactor, maybe?) about B&S covering "reel around the fountain." Does anyone have a copy of this anywehere, a bootleg I guess? As for little woodland creatures, I got weally cwose to a Kingfisher this afternoon, close enough to see him jerk his head about whilst watching fishies. I followed him all along the sea wall until some bastard decided to wallop his car mats on the wall to get the dust off, causing Mister Kingfisher to fly off in understandable alarm. I've noticed that nobody notices Kingfishers, they must be either blind or extremely blasé. I'll stop my Rodd impersonation now.
