For the benefit of overseas listees, Paul Gambaccini is a disc jockey on BBC Radio 1, or at least he was. His gimmick is the fact that he is American and, quite frankly, a twat. That's the formalities dealt with, let the rumour-mongering commence! Paul Gambaccini had "an affair" of the "live-in" variety with a young man I had the pleasure of going to school with, called Stevie. Now, Stevie boy was gay I guess, nothing more and nothing less, Stevie boy was (not) a friend of mine. Stevie was the kind of guy who would be regularly pummelled mercilessly by bullies to the accompaniment of banshee screams of "leave him alone!" from his devoted female companions, while everybody else stood around enjoying the spectacle. I would like to say that I leapt in to rescue Stevie from the bullies, but I didn't. To be honest, I thought he was a puff, and a big charley to boot. I didn't like him much, although it pains me to admit it now. However, he did gain a great deal of admiration from me one day when one of his neighbours' mothers asked him what school uniform consisted of for sixth formers and he replied "ankle warmers and pixie boots". Despite its name, Ashby-de-la-Zouch is not a good place for homosexuals, especially not super-camp ones like Stevie. So one day, like so many other misfits and outsiders, Stevie packed his bags and headed for the bright lights of London, where there are all kinds of things that there aren't in Ashby, such as Raymond's Revue Bar and the Poetry Cafe. It was in one such den of iniquity that Stevie met Paul Gambaccini. They became lovers.... Stevie looked a bit like Limahl, even after Limahl wasn't very famous anymore. I leave you to draw your own conclusions. But please don't conclude that I am anti-gay or anti-London or anti-American. You may, however, conclude that I am still pursuing my "Strawberries and Chocolate" line of psychological torture of Stephen Capri Pants. Older viewers may remember the sordid tale of Malcolm "Duke" Allured from Showaddywaddy's son. Stevie was in the same year as him, and they were both dead keen on New Romantics. And I'm not making this up, just to take the piss out of Stevie Jackson, but I must confess that the name Stevie has always made me think of Stevie, rather than Mister Jackson. Keith wrote: I've been wondering of late what the update on the Duke's book is - Mr.Fitchett - do we have the word on this? When's it coming out? I think you should change the title to "Young and Foolish (but right)". I'm looking forward to reading it. Keith, du bist ein Dumkopf! I can tell you don't hang around in Waterstones very often. Duke's book is mashing up the floor in all good bookshops. Honeycomb Godmanchester - still one of the most expensive cheeses on the British market, sold by the molecule 4. Varicose Rhombus (full fat) - not so much in demand now the thirtysomething coronary has gone so firmly out of fashion 5. Neutered Hounslow Project - an early example of a lab-grown cheese; the wafers of interleaved edible metal are a nice touch 6. Also, here's an updated FAQ here which has been updated (naturally) thanks to help from some people... 1. What is Tigermilk, where can I get a copy? Tigermilk is the bands first album and was released around about May 1996. It was released as part of a Stow College course whereby Alan Rankine (of the Associates) fronts up the cash to record a single every year, although with Belle and Sebastian they decided that there was enough material for an album, hence Tigermilk. There were only 1000 copies pressed and so the record is worth a lot of money now. The band have always mantained that Tigermilk will be re-released at some point, and this will definitely be the case, currently likely that about March 1999, although this may change. 2. Who is the guest singer on Lazy Line Painter Jane? The female singer on Lazy Line Painter Jane is Monica Queen, formerly of countryish Glasgow band Thrum. Thrum released a record a few years ago, about 1994 I think. Last I heard she was recording with her own band which is called "Monica", or at least that's what it was called in February 1997. Here's a list of releases. "Purify" 7", "Thrum" / "Here I am" / "So glad" 12"/CDs and the "Rifferama" LP/CD 3. What is "Elvis" in A Century of Elvis. No-one knows bar the author really, but it's probably a cat, perhaps a tortoise, maybe actually Elvis, maybe it's Tortelvis from Dread Zeppelin who knows, and to be quite honest, who cares. 4. Who is in the band... Stuart Murdoch - singing guitar, trumpet apparently now, for the twin lead trumpet effect. Isobel Campbell - singing, cello, various Sarah Martin - violin, weird things Stevie Jackson - Guitar, piano, singing. Stuart David - Bass Mick Cooke - Trumpet, various Chris Geddes - keyboards Richard Colburn - Drums Neil Robertson has been known to play bass on Stuart David's "Spaceboy Dream", which brings me on to... 5. What other bands have members of Belle and Sebastian involved in? There's quite a number of things here. I'm sure it's not complete either, it's just what I can remember off hand. Chris Geddes : currently V-Twin and Golden Rodeo (think that's what they're called). Has played on Arab Strap records. V-Twin have released two singles (to my knowledge), Gifted, and a 12", In the land of the Pharoes. Mick Cooke : Used to play with Hardbody, who released two singles on Epic (On your own, Hazel's hob). Now plays with the Karelia and the Amphetameanies. Has also played on releases by Mojave 3, Ex-Cathedra. Probably others too. Stuart Murdoch : Played on releases by Polarbear and Arab Strap. Previously : (Early) Digger$, Lisa Helps The Blind, Rhode Island. Richard Colburn : Has played with Polarbear/Snowpatrol Isobel Campbell : Has played on Arab Strap records, also played on the Snowpatrol record. Stuart David : Stuart David has a side project called "Looper". There has been one single released on Sub-pop singles club called "Impossible things" and there is an album planned. 6. What records have been released? What about all these unreleased songs that people keep belting on about in order to make themselves look smart? Pocketbook Angel London has let me down Hurley's having dreams These are little demos of old songs that will as far as we know, never ever be released as Belle and Sebastian. Loneliness of the middle distance runner Modern Rock song Rhoda People around the place have tapes of various different versions of these, they've been kicking around for a while and they may well be released reasonably soon, there are numerous different versions of the Loneliness of the middle distance runner. I Know where the summer goes The Gate These two will probably be a part of the next single 9. What sessions have they done on the radio? The first session was around about September 1996 here Mark Lamarr sat in for Mark and Lard at night... They played Judy and the dream of horses Like Dylan in the movies The State that I am in The stars of track and field The second was about February 1997 on Mark + Lard's program again and they played : I could be dreaming Seeing other people (slow version) We rule the school Modern Rock song The third was on Steve Lamacq's evening session and they played : Lazy Line Painter Jane Sleep the clock around Slow Graffiti Seymour Stein They did one of Stevie Jackson's tracks "Wrong Love" one night when the evening session was live from Glasgow. Apparently this is now called "Wrong Girl", will it be called "Wrong Sheep" at some point in the future? The fourth less well known session was on Peter Easton's Radio Scotland music program where he played : The Loneliness of the middle distance runner Slow Graffiti Modern Rock song. 10. Who is Tigermilk dedicated to? Tigermilk is dedicated to Lawrence Bradby, who's a friend of Stuart's. I dunno how frequently asked this question is, but it certainly was asked frequently recently as regards a competition on French radio. 11. Are Belle and Sebastian twee? No, they rock. 12. Dog on Wheels, what's the story there then? Well it's not really Belle and Sebastian on that EP, as you'll see if you have a look at who played on it. Here's the story: All the songs on the EP were recorded some time, either at the end of '95, or start of '96, at Beat Box studios, which is where Stuarts Murdoch and David were doing a doley sound engineering course at the time. Pretty much everyone who plays on it were on the course as well, apart from Mick. One of the guys who ran the studio was Alan Rankine, of Stow College, and Electric Honey Records, which is where he came in. So hopefully that'll put an end to the word of loads of hoary old session musicians playing on it, just kids who were on the course. Makes the recording of that EP sounds less like an episode of Rock School doesn't it. OUCH from the kitchen for shooting down someone's sweet little dream of making their own B&S website. Sinister: Sticking up for Dog on Wheels

Sorry? Dog on Wheels is Mark Kolmar's least favourite release?? Madness! The title track is the most lovelorn and poignant song ever, regardless of who played on it (does that make it more worthless in anyone's eyes?), and it's also got String Bean Jean and Belle and Sebastian on it!! I agree that B&S isn't their most sophisticated moment, but I bet you that for most of the list it holds a special place in their hearts. And String Bean Jean - my god, that song rocks my proverbial; apart from Le Pastie, which rescues the relatively disappointing 3,6,9...EP, it's the song I most look forward to hearing in the world at the moment. The State I'm in demo is a bit unnecessary and poor, in my opinion, but it's a nice curio to have, I suppose. Anyone who hasn't voted for their fave tunes, by the way, should do so at the booth the B&S site on Jeepster. Especially if you like Chick Factor, which is languishing, embarrassedly, beneath Hurley's having dreams... So there you go. A totally B&S posting for a change. Kisses, Markx p.s. Good evening, Believe it or not, Belle and Sebastian have reached all corners of the world. If a man from Utah enjoys B&S, then they must have achieved some sort of recognition, right? I do think I am the only fan of this fine band within the state, however. B&S never receive any radio play on the local alternative stations. Many, if not all, haven't heard of B&S at all. Anyway, it's great to find solace amongst fellow listeners. The music finds a place in one's soul and doesn't leave. I thoroughly enjoy the intelligent lyrics, soothing instrumentation and witting feel of both CDs. They have become my favorites in a short time frame. Awesome! I look forward to all the conversations contained within this mailing list: Sinister. Please spread the love of life. Just my thoughts/reactions for the day: Stephanie reported that someone in The Flagpole wrote: "...your heart soars with them, and it's almost as good as that first crush, that first slow dance, that first kiss." Yes, yes, yes. Someone on Wheels said: "And String Bean Jean - my god, that song rocks my proverbial;..." One of these days I'm going to get into the voting booth, and this song (among many others, of course) is going to get very high marks from me. I adore it and I can't listen to it without singing along. Lady Penelope sighed: "...over on channel four john boy walton was out covering the explosion of the hindenberg and looking hotter by the minute (no pun intended)." Well, here I must disagree. I've personally always had a thing for Jason -- SO sweet-tempered and sensible, plus he's "the musical one" in the family. Even when I was about six years old and playing with Waltons paper-dolls, I liked him best. Sinister: record-o-thon

Has anyone ever sat down and tried to listen to all the cd's/7's/whatever by a favorite band of theirs all at once? (I'm sure there are more than a few people on the list who have tried this with B&S...) I guess with B&S it would be fairly easy, what with the total amount of music coming in at (I'm guessing) around 2-1/2 to 3 hours? Kind of gives you an interesting view of where they were back then, where they're at now, etc. However, one day I was doing a major cleanup project on my room and decided, "I've got a lot of time. Why don't I try it with a band that has a lot of stuff out?" So I made the mistake of picking OMD. Much as I love them, 9 albums and two cd's of b-sides is an astonishing amount of music to try to cram into your head at once. I think I made it through "The Pacific Age" or so before I started going completely batshit. At least I didn't try for the Cure... -mrjake It's late. I'm still at work.
