Sinister: Lots of stuff...

Well I've not posted anything for ages. It's not been a very inspiring time, back at uni, final year, french studies, lots of work to do, i enjoy it but it takes so much time all this stuff. Anyway, I've just about been able to keep up with the list, but nothing much very interesting has been said recently and my delete button has had fun too. In fact the sessions posts and the dog on wheels thing has been the only bit of note in a month. I mean, i guess its important for some of you but who wants to meet up with such and such a person in toronto/san francisco/mars isn't of much interest to me is it now? I think Dog On Wheels is a brilliant song, and a very good ep overall, and i think the state i am in demo is better than the tigermilk version. I think that 3..6..9 is even better, and that LLPJ is the worst of the 3 but still rocks, and i have to disagree with what it seems is the vast majority, who say that you made me forget my dreams is lovely and one of their best! Never in 4 billion years. I like it as it's them and it isnt bad but definitely one of their lesser efforts. Nothing on Photo Jenny. Finally would anyone like to (senses everyone think "not after the load of boring senseless shite you've just written mate") record me some Pastels or V-Twin or Hefner and I'll trade something or send spare tapes? Pretty please? And a copy of Rhoda anyone if it exists? And to the person who recorded me Snow Patrol i need your address to send you stuff do i not? Yes, thank you :) It's not that I'm not interested in anyone's lives you know. In fact some of the little tales have been very entertaining and we have some fab writers on this list and it really rules in general, just the stories have been a bit crap of late. Sorry my posts are all practical and music (especially b+s) related without really having much life to them, may get round to that sometime. Well be good and be safe chickens. Sinister: yet another review

Stephanie quotes Greta Garbo: "Even when I was a tiny girl, I preferred being alone...I could give my imagination free rein and live in a world of lovely dreams"--Greta Garbo. I could have sworn the quote went: " ...give my imagination free rein and live in a world of lovely cheese" Also: What Is Moog? Not the moogs, just moog, or is that a band as well, as in what is that, and how can Buffalo Daughter and belle and sebby both have a sparse amount of moog, as reviews have described them both as lacking, the two bands having little to do with the other. I have decided it's some sort of Post-beckian term, to be thrown about by reviewers to look cool and to sound "in-the-know". Is it some strange pedal? A reference to sampling? something they just made up for kicks to laugh at us poor suburbians with our bad haircuts and poor supply of decent Indian food? Although it's really not so bad, if anyone were to step into Urban Outfitters in Berkeley, you'll see they've made their entire store look like the cover art for Spiritualized's "ladies and Gentleman, we're floating in space". Absolutely horrific. Copying is such a bore, it's dissapointing. Nothing else here, no sweetnesses, really, I haven't had a cookie today, although i've wanted one since yesterday, the shortbread kind with strawberry jam filling. No, jsut a couple of laughs from Infinite Jest, by david foster wallace, which has a way of explaining the absurdities of American Life, including all current (embarassing) government affairs. That and a couple of mushies from the lovely list. I'm glad everyone's starting to get along. Sinister: Slight Return (The unbearable funkiness of being)

Hello Popkids, Eating properly? Not too much cheese? Good good. My local cheese-mobile does big lumps of a funny beige cheese, about the consistancy of cheddar,and about the size of a pub, but when you bite into it...Wow! It's made with milk and Marmite! Yay! Neatly combining two long running list threads in one tasty sandwich. Yum yum. I hope you've all been catching lots of buses and looking winsome in my absence- I, correspondingly, have been entertaining jumper-wearing girls at bus stops for the length of a regal cigarette, and then walking away in a cool, unobtainable way. It's been an amusing few days. erm...Julie Christie? Fantastic. I particularly like that film of Farenheit 451, where everyone goes about in monorails, it's so cool+futuristic daddio. Julie plays two people in that film as I recall, one character with long hair, the other with short hair. I have a picture on my wall torn from an acting manual, it's a photostat of Rodney (Bob Ferris) Bewes' Spotlight entry (The Spotlight's a photo directory of thesps.) There's a picture of Rodney wearing a dog and a Captain Birdseye beard, and an identical one of Rodney+doggy and no Captain Birdseye beard. 'Versatility- the actor's greatest tool' reads the caption.... This mail's not very good I'm afraid- I've been away, so I don't know what the cool set are talking about :-) Full marks to the person who quoted the absolutely irresistable fannies in their subject line- I didn't see who it was, sorry. And that line's from 'Radio', isn't it? Off the flop LP, 'Thirteen'...full cred points, I feel. 'Thirteen' is their best LP by far, IMHO. The NME said that they've been trying desperately to get other 'Glasgow' bands like the fannies and, er well known 'Glaswegians' Arab Strap to dish dirt on our beloved B&S. Now they say they're so desperate for info that they'll pay, or something like that...Mmm. I could do with some money....shame that there's no juicy gossip to sell. Maybe I should make some up, 'cause ''Belle and Sebastian seem like very nice people'' will not pay my rent, oh no. FEY BAND REALLY JUST A COVER FOR CHURCH HALL BASED INTERNATIONAL DRUGS AND SMUTTY BOOKS CARTEL SHOCKER!!!!!!! Now that would sell papers! Someone slip a copy of Razzle into Isobel's violin case, quick. I need to eat! That isn't what I meant to say at all, you know. I only popped in to say goodbye. It's been fun you know, and I thought it only fair and polite to say byebye properly, rather than rushing off in a big huff. I won't be picking up mail regularly after tomorrow, but feel free to write, I will get back to you eventually. And I may come back later, if I find a computer to borrow, and if I get homesick, so this isn't goodbye, it is merely bonjour, as Del Boy would probably say. Anyway, some friends are coming to keep you all company, they may be here already, I don't know. Some of you know Fred, and some of you know Mel, from pubs and picnics. Be nice to them. (Fred, by the way, is on Page 4 of this week's NME, in a little photo, where he's dancing with a maniac at the Xfm demo, looking very much like a happier Che Guevara.) I'd leave you with a Bus Polaroid, but I only paint buses these days, smudging the paint as I go, so the picture looks like it's going brrrrrrrrrrr!!!!, like buses do when they stop halfway up the hill, and you press your nose against the window and your whole face goes brrrrrrrrrr!!! and your teeth all rattle together. Instead, here's a Ink Pubaroid, for the steaming alkies who requested it. It's a real pub, in Berwick St Market and anyone who fancies taking their own snaps of it will probably find me in there, looking at the world through the viewfinder of a beer glass, most days of the week. ************************************************************* I took this one on a Wednesday lunchtime, though it looks like a Sunday afternoon. The dust is falling very very slowly through a beam of unexpected sunlight; settling slowly like Guinness. In the centre of the shot you can clearly see an old man, propped in the corner seat by the door, his taut, hairy brown arms crossed gently over his chest, his cap tipped over his sleeping eyes. The sunlight is writing WATNEYS in shadow across the table, and through the open door, you can see a crate of grapefruit on a trolley, ripening in the sun where he left them. ************************************************************** byebye kids, and thank you, especially *you* honey child. Sinister: cheese content

I think the obsession with thinness is really creepy, because being dangerously thin (as most models are) takes away all your secondary sex characteristics - hips, breasts, body fat - and it makes you look child-like again. maybe the way some men fetishize thin women has something to do with wanting a frail, child-like creature, easy to dominate and totally non-threatening. Sinister: yet *another* review

In the Flagpole today they had a review of TBWTAS. For those of you who don't know, the Flagpole is like a free local Athens "entertainment"-type newspaper thing. I haven't read the review yet, so I don't know if it's good or well-written or not, but here it is: BELLE AND SEBASTIAN The Boy With The Arab Strap Matador Belle and Sebastian are the auditory equivalent of a warm blanket. Last year's full-length _If You're Feeling Sinister_, as well as three subsequent EPs, have transcended hipster boundaries worldwide and attracted a devoted and ever-growing cult of listeners who have been labeled, by publications such as the _Village Voice_, as born-again Smiths fans. The music of Belle and Sebastian belies that narrow definition, though, as this Glasgow octet play very well-crafted, catchy pop songs invested with a real sense of intimacy and delicacy. The result is something that sounds like Nick Drake crossed with Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart. Lyrically, Belle and Sebastian are apt to be too clever by half and a tad precious, but when this band is firing on all cylinders--as they were the majority of time on _Sinister_--it's about as perfect as pop music gets. It was inevitable, then, that Belle and Sebastian's new release, _The Boy With The Arab Strap_, would have a difficult time living up to _Sinister_'s grandeur. While the songs on this new album generally aren't as strong as the band's previous work, they are a great deal more fleshed out than the spare arrangements found on _Sinister_, incorporating lush strings and organs--and on "Sleep The Clock Around", bagpipes from the motherland--into most of the tracks. Lead singer/songwriter Stuart Murdoch shares vocal duties with his bandmates this time around as well, helping move Belle and Sebastian closer to a fully-functioning, collaborative octet rather than just the group of friends Murdoch originally assembled to help augment his songs. This more collaborative, wizened affair leads to some interesting highlights, including the Stevie Jackson-sung "Seymour Stein", a lovely melancholy tune that sounds like it could be an outtake from VU's _Loaded_ (featuring a humorous riff on Johnny Marr's lackluster project Electronic--for all those born-again Smiths fans). Other great moments include the carousel-like cacophony that emerges from the background as Murdoch sings happily of "seven weeks of staying up all night" in "A Summer Wasted" [shouldn't that be Wasting-steph], the shuffle and twisted sexuality of the title track (go ask your parents what an "arab strap" is) grounded on a bassline spryly barreling forth from the '70s classic "Draggin' the Line", and the lonely piano that emerges halfway through "The Rollercoaster Ride", and continues to play long after the vocals have ceased. The real keeper here, though, is "Dirty Dream Number Two". As good a pop song as you'll hear this year, it's Dusty Springfield with whispered vocal. Spector without the Wagner, and closer to a Bacharach-David song in 1998 than anything Elvis Costello's own collaboration with Burt is going to muster up, all driven by a backbeat right out of 1965. In the last 55 seconds of the song, as the strings and horns ride the beat, soaring forward and higher, your heart soars with them, and it's almost as good as that first crush, that first slow dance, that first kiss.
